A
Thursday
Well, Dad is really serious about me taking on more responsibility (责任). And the first thing he wants me to do is start waking myself up in the morning.
That’s actually a real problem, because I depend on HIM to wake me up.
That’s the way we’ve been doing it for YEARS, and I really don’t see any reason to change things now.
Dad said that if I don’t learn to wake myself up with an alarm clock, then I’m not going to know how to do it when I go off to college.
But I always found that would be the way me and Dad would stay in touch.
Yesterday was the first day I tried to wake myself up, and it didn’t work out so well. My alarm went off, but the sound just worked its way into my dream.
And today didn’t go any better. I set my alarm to “radio” and tuned it to a classical music station because I didn’t want to hear that annoying beep (烦人的哔哔声) first thing in the morning. But the music didn’t wake me up, either.
The problem is, without a real person waking me up, my brain is always going to find some excuse to keep sleeping. But I think I have worked out a way to solve this alarm clock situation. I found one of those old-style clocks in the storage room today, and those clocks make a huge sound when they go off.
I tested it out to see if it still worked and, just as expected, it did.
I don’t think ANYONE could sleep through a noise like THAT. The only problem is that the clock doesn’t have a “snooze” bar (贪睡按钮), so I’m worried I’ll shut it off and fall back asleep.
So tonight I hid the clock under my bed. This way, when the alarm goes off, I’ll have to get up to find the clock, and then I’ll be up for the day.
16.What’s the purpose of using “HIM” instead of “him”?
A.To tell readers the writer is shouting the word “him”.

C.To show the writer really needs his father to wake him up.
D.To prove the writer dislikes getting in touch with his father.
17.What does the underlined word “way” in Paragraph 8 mean to the writer?
A.Going to bed earlier than usual.
B.Using his phone as an alarm clock.
C.Asking his father to wake him up as before.
D.Depending on an old-style clock to get up on time.
18.What is the picture here used for?

C.To add some numbers and facts. D.To make some details easy to imagine.

Nowadays, more teenagers take an interest in reading literary classics. However, many of us hardly think about what makes a book suitable for young readers. A widely-read classic does not always mean it fits teenage students.
Before we start a new book, we are supposed to learn about its theme and background. Although a book is famous and widely read, it may include ideas that teenagers are not ready for. We should choose works that carry positive spirits of hope, courage and kindness. Good literature can teach us how to deal with troubles in our real life.
Reading classics is a wonderful hobby, but we must manage our spare time well. It is not wise to run out of your study time just for reading novels. We can write short book reviews after finishing a book. By thinking and writing down your thoughts, you will get much more from your reading.
Books are a valuable form of art. Popularity is just one way to praise good writing. As teenagers, we should develop our own reading taste instead of simply following reading recommendation lists.
19.What is the writer’s opinion about widely-read classics?
A.All popular classics are suitable for teenagers.
B.Being widely read means the book is perfect.
C.Popular classics may not suit teenage readers.
D.Teenagers must only read world-famous classics.
20.What kind of literary works should teenagers choose?
A.Books with only surprising and exciting plots
B.Works that carry positive spirits
C.Books which have the thickest pages
D.Books that are recommended by all popular lists
21.What can we do to get more from reading literary classics?
A.Spend all your free study time reading novels
B.Give up homework to enjoy reading
C.Write short book reviews after reading
D.Only read books on popular recommendation lists
22.What is the main idea of this passage?
A.Teenagers should form proper attitudes towards reading literary classics.
B.How teenagers can become famous short-story writers.
C.The history of Russian world-famous novels.
D.Different ways for teenagers to create their own plays.

Short Videos Help Old Opera Shine Again
Li Jia is a Grade-9 student in Changsha. At first, she thought Huagu Opera, Hunan’s popular folk opera, was old-fashioned. She preferred short-video clips (短片) about pop music and paid little attention to this local art. Everything changed last Spring Festival, when her grandma took her to a community theatre nearby to enjoy a free public show.
To her surprise, the show was far more interesting than she had imagined. Actors wore bright and colourful costumes, danced happily and told funny daily stories in lively Hunan dialect (方言). The most famous play Liu Hai Cuts Firewood made the whole audience (观众) laugh loudly. Some old fans even sang along with the actors. Yet Li Jia noticed something worrying: most fans in the hall were old people. Few teenagers knew or loved Huagu Opera, and most of her classmates had never watched it.
Later, Li Jia came up with an idea. She interviewed some young opera performers and shot videos of their wonderful shows. She added simple comments so more teenagers could understand the stories behind the plays. What surprised her greatly was that her videos got thousands of views online. Many young people left messages, saying they wanted to learn more about Huagu Opera.
Today, more young performers try this new way. Short videos do not change the heart of Huagu Opera. They just build a bridge between old folk art and modern teenagers. Traditional culture can win young hearts when it meets new media.
23.Where did Li Jia watch a public Huagu Opera show?
A.In a big city cinema. B.In a community theatre. C.On the school stage.
24.What worried Li Jia according to the passage?
A.Few teenagers loved Huagu Opera.
B.Old fans sang too loudly in the hall.
C.The show was not interesting enough.
25.How did Li Jia introduce Huagu Opera to teenagers?
A.By writing a long story about it.
B.By learning to act in Huagu Opera plays.
C.By making short videos with simple comments.
26.In which part of a magazine can people read the passage?
A.Culture. B.Sports. C.Science.
D
There are many differences in ways of thinking between East and West. Many of them are reflected in daily behaviour. In particular, Chinese people sometimes attach more importance to their appearance and social status than to their inner qualities, while Westerners think the opposite. However, Socrates (Ancient Greek philosopher) and Confucius share significant similarities that are universal.
Both philosophers share several teachings in common; for example, their understanding of the nature of knowledge and their opinions on education. Socrates believed “There is only one good, knowledge;and only one evil, ignorance.” Similarly, Confucius said, “Isn’t it a pleasure to study and practice what you have learned?” But both also acknowledge the limits of knowledge. Socrates said: “All I know is that I know nothing.” Similarly, Confucius said, “When you know a thing, to hold you know it; when you don’t know a thing, to admit that you don’t know it—this is knowledge.”
However, there are important differences in their understanding of morality. Confucius believed each person should follow certain regulations according to virtue (德行). Everyone should play their role in a society where people are interdependent in order to achieve harmony in the whole society. For instance, when asked how to govern a country, Confucius stated “An emperor should act like an emperor, a subject should act like a subject.” Socrates, however, places self-knowledge over social knowledge.
Another difference between them is their attitude towards political domination (支配). Confucius believed the best way to govern a country isn’t through legal system, but through virtue. Socrates, by contrast, declared that “nothing is more important than justice”.
Why have East and West developed such different cultural values? A widely accepted theory holds that Eastern civilization was an agricultural civilization. Hence the need for a collective society and friendly relations with neighbors was strong. Western civilization, however, was nomadic (游牧的). Their mobility makes them less dependent on society after migration.
In spite of their differences, the two cultures have more in common than differences. The shared concern for moral values in the teachings of Socrates and Confucius also shows us more fundamental similarities between Eastern and Western cultures in their pursuit of virtuous lives.
27.What do the two philosophers share about knowledge?
A.The learning of knowledge is easy. B.The learning of knowledge is endless.
C.A man without knowledge is foolish. D.A man shall not pretend to understand.
28.Which of the following reflects the thoughts of Confucius in terms of morality?
A.Nothing is more important than a legal system.
B.I am not a Chinese, but a citizen of the world.
C.Not everyone should play his own role in society.
D.A man does what is proper to the position he is in.
29.What is the root cause of the differences between Eastern and Western cultural values?
A.The difference in political atmosphere. B.The difference in the length of history.
C.The difference in economic development. D.The difference in levels of social dependency.
30.What is the passage mainly about?
A.Reasons for similarities of Eastern and Western cultures.
B.The introduction of great figures of two different cultures.
C.Comparisons of the thoughts of the two great philosophers.
D.The contributions of two great philosophers to civilization.

Whether you’re cleaning your room, sweeping the floor, or washing your clothes, you might feel the same way you do after exercising. This got me thinking—why don’t chores (家务活) count as exercise?
When I asked them if doing chores counts as exercise, they told me that all movement is good for health. For example, cleaning your room can raise your heart rate (心率) to the same level as light jogging. With this in mind, trainers say you can totally make the most of your chores as exercise. If you do it right, they can even take the place of your exercise for the day. Here’s what to do.
Instead of just walking down the street to throw the rubbish, try to walk faster or run. When going back, you could climb the stairs instead of taking the lift. If you feel tired, remind yourself that you’re making the most of these movements while completing chores. This will encourage you to walk and move faster like you are exercising.
Ellen Thompson, a personal trainer, says you’ll still need a plan to keep your body moving for a certain amount of time to truly improve your health. So if there aren’t enough chores for you to do to reach your goal, do some more exercise.
A.This way, you turn a simple chore into a quick exercise.
B.And every little bit of movement helps, including chores.
C.To find out more, I asked some trainers a few questions.
D.Taking exercise while doing chores is a good way for you to save time.
E.However, trainers also agree that chores shouldn’t be your only form (形式) of exercise.

Hello everyone. My name is Susan Brown. I’m in Grade Nine now. Two months ago, I changed my school. I was a little sad at first, because I had no friends. After knowing that, my mother advised me to be friendlier at school. One day, my classmate Linda fell down and hurt her arm in PE class. I sent her to hospital. Last week, Peter had difficulty doing his English homework. I’m good at English and it’s easy for me, so I helped him with his homework. Now I have lots of friends at school. We’ll go to the park this weekend and I’m looking forward to it.

A
B.To explain the writer is angry about his father’s new rule.
A.To tell most of the story. B.To help readers learn new words.
C.To add some numbers and facts. D.To make some details easy to imagine.
【答案】16.C 17.D 18.D

Nowadays, more teenagers take an interest in reading literary classics. However, many of us hardly think about what makes a book suitable for young readers. A widely-read classic does not always mean it fits teenage students.
Before we start a new book, we are supposed to learn about its theme and background. Although a book is famous and widely read, it may include ideas that teenagers are not ready for.
A.Culture. B.Sports. C.Science.
【答案】23.B 24.A 25.C 26.A

24.第2段提到“Yet Li Jia noticed something worrying: most fans in the hall were old people. Few teenagers knew or loved Huagu Opera, and most of her classmates had never watched it.”,让李佳担忧的是几乎没有青少年了解、喜爱花鼓戏。
25.第3段提到“She interviewed some young opera performers and shot videos of their wonderful shows. She added simple comments so more teenagers could understand the stories behind the plays.”,李佳通过制作带有简单解说的短视频向青少年介绍花鼓戏。
26.第4段提到“They just build a bridge between old folk art and modern teenagers. Traditional culture can win young hearts when it meets new media.”,全文围绕传统民间艺术花鼓戏的传播展开,属于文化相关内容,因此人们可以在杂志的文化板块读到这篇文章。
第二段指出苏格拉底认为“There is only one good, knowledge; and only one evil, ignorance.”,孔子也说“Isn’t it a pleasure to study and practice what you have learned?” 但两人也都承认知识的局限:苏格拉底说“All I know is that I know nothing.”,孔子说“When you know a thing, to hold you know it; when you don’t know a thing, to admit that you don’t know it—this is knowledge.”
28.第三段提到孔子认为“each person should follow certain regulations according to virtue”,并且“Everyone should play their role in a society where people are interdependent in order to achieve harmony in the whole society”,还举例说“An emperor should act like an emperor, a subject should act like a subject.”
29.第五段提出东西方文化价值观差异的根源:“A widely accepted theory holds that Eastern civilization was an agricultural civilization. Hence the need for a collective society and friendly relations with neighbors was strong. Western civilization, however, was nomadic. Their mobility makes them less dependent on society after migration.”
31.
32.
33.
34.
35.Do you want to do chores as exercise? Why?
31.C 32.B 33.A 34.E 35.Yes, I do. Because it can save time and keep me healthy.
根据后句“When I asked them if doing chores counts as exercise, they told me that all movement is good for health.”,后文写作者询问教练相关问题。C选项“To find out more, I asked some trainers a few questions.”
32.根据前句“they told me that all movement is good for health.”,所有活动都对健康有益。B选项“And every little bit of movement helps, including chores.”
33.根据前文“try to walk faster or run. When going back, you could climb the stairs instead of taking the lift.”,介绍做家务时增加运动量的做法。A选项“This way, you turn a simple chore into a quick exercise.”
34.根据后句“Ellen Thompson, a personal trainer, says you’ll still need a plan to keep your body moving for a certain amount of time to truly improve your health.”,后文表示只靠家务不足以达成健身目标。E选项“However, trainers also agree that chores shouldn’t be your only form of exercise.”

Carolyn smiled. “Start tomorrow,” she said, “ 49 yet, start today.” Her words hung in the air like a quiet challenge.

根据“too far to ...” rush out“冲出去”、get away“离开”、move on“继续”均不符合逻辑。
“so moved that ...”
根据“had a dream and worked at it”可知,是强调实现梦想,应用achieved。
