The Girl Who Refused to Sit at the Back
Malala Yousafzai was born in Pakistan in 1997. Her father ran a small school, and he always told her that girls had the same right to learn as boys. Malala loved school. She liked maths, English and sitting by the window to read.
But when she was eleven, life became dangerous. A group took control of her town and said girls must not go to school. Most people were afraid to speak. Malala was not. She wrote a blog under a false name, telling the world what was happening to girls in her valley. Later, she spoke on radio and television, saying, “Books and pens are the strongest weapons.”
In 2012, a gunman hurt her on her way home from school. She was badly wounded, but she did not die. After a long fight to recover, she went back to school in Britain. Many people thought she would stay quiet after such a terrible experience. Instead, she spoke at the United Nations on her sixteenth birthday.
In 2014, Malala became the youngest person ever to win the Nobel Peace Prize. She did not use the money only for herself. She built schools for girls in different countries and kept saying the same thing: education is not a gift from the powerful; it is a right for every child.
Today, she studies, writes and speaks around the world. Her story is not only about one brave girl. It is about millions of children who still dream of a classroom, a teacher and a book.
24. What did Malala’s father teach her when she was young?
A. Girls should stay at home and cook.
B. Girls have the same right to learn as boys.
C. Radios are more useful than books.
D. School is only for rich children.
25. Why did Malala write a blog under a false name?
A. Because she wanted to become famous quickly.
B. Because she did not know how to spell her own name.
C. Because it was dangerous to speak out, but she still wanted the world to know the truth.
D. Because her teacher asked her to write about animals.
26. What can we learn from Malala’s life?
A. It is safer to say nothing when people are unfair.
B. Only boys can change the world.
C. One brave voice can help many children get an education.
D. Nobel prizes are more important than going to school.

The Man Who Planted Hope
Zhang Lijun was not a movie star. He was a farmer from a dry village in Gansu. When he was a child, there were almost no trees around his home. The wind blew sand into the fields, and crops often died before autumn.
In 1980, after a terrible drought killed most of the village’s wheat, Zhang made a strange promise to himself: “If nobody else will plant trees, I will.” His neighbours laughed. “The ground is too poor,” they said. “Even grass gives up here.”
But Zhang did not listen to the laughter. Every spring, he walked miles to fetch young trees from the county town. He carried water in old buckets and poured a little into each dry hole. Many trees died in the first year. More died in the second. Still, he kept going.
He planted before breakfast and after dinner. He planted on hills nobody wanted. He saved money not to buy a better TV, but to buy seeds and tools. His wife complained at first, then joined him. His children grew up watching him dig, water and wait.
Forty years passed. The bare hills behind the village are now green. Birds nest in the poplars. Springs that had dried up began to flow again. The village school uses one of Zhang’s old photos in its hallway: an old man with sunburned arms, holding a shovel(铁铲)like a pen.
A reporter once asked him, “Are you tired of being ordinary?” Zhang smiled and said, “I never wanted to be famous. I just wanted the next child to hear leaves in the wind, not sand.”
27. What was Zhang Lijun’s village like when he was a child?
A. Green, wet and full of birds.
B. Rich, modern and close to the sea.
C. Dry, sandy and short of trees.
D. Cold, snowy and good for growing rice.
28. What did Zhang’s neighbours think of his plan to plant trees?
A. They believed it would make the village rich overnight.
B. They thought the ground was too poor for trees to grow.
C. They wanted to give him all their money.
D. They planned to move to the city with him.
29. What happened after Zhang planted trees for forty years?
A. The hills stayed bare and nothing changed.
B. The village became a big factory town.
C. The dry hills became green and springs flowed again.
D. All the villagers left because of the birds.

Heroes Next to Us
Ms Zhou, a Beijing English teacher, gave her Year 9 students a task: “Write about an inspiring person. It does not have to be someone in a book.”
The first note came from Peng Fei. “My hero is my mum,” he wrote. “She cleans offices at night. After work, her back hurts, but she still checks my homework before sleep. She says, ‘I sweep floors so you can open doors.’ I never knew a mop(拖把)could be a kind of superhero tool.”
The second note was from He Jing. “My hero is the old man at the corner newsstand(报刊亭),” she wrote. “He cannot see well, but he remembers every reader’s favourite magazine. When it rains, he puts plastic bags over the books so they stay dry. He never complains. He just smiles and says, ‘Words should not get wet.’”
Then Wang Tao wrote, “My hero is our building guard, Uncle Ma. Last winter, the pipes froze. He climbed to the roof at midnight with a hair dryer and hot towels. His hands turned red, but by morning every family had water. He said, ‘A building is like a big pot — if one person is cold, we all feel it.’”
Ms Zhou read all the notes twice. At the start of the lesson, she thought the class would choose astronauts, kings and famous scientists. By the end, she understood something simpler and stronger: inspiration does not always wear a cape(披风). Sometimes it wears rubber gloves, carries plastic bags, or holds a wrench(扳手)on a cold roof.
30. What does Peng Fei’s mother do at night?
A. She sells magazines at a newsstand.
B. She cleans offices.
C. She repairs frozen pipes.
D. She teaches English.
31. Why does He Jing admire the old man at the newsstand?
A. Because he is young and famous.
B. Because he remembers readers’ favourite magazines and keeps books dry in rain.
C. Because he gives her money every day.
D. Because he can see better than anyone else.
32. What did Uncle Ma do last winter?
A. He climbed to the roof at midnight to fix the frozen pipes.
B. He bought every family a new fridge.
C. He painted the whole building by himself.
D. He closed the newsstand for a week.
33. What did Ms Zhou understand at the end of the lesson?
A. Only famous people can be inspiring.
B. Inspiring people are always rich and powerful.
C. Heroes can be ordinary people doing kind, helpful things around us.
D. Students should not write about their families.

The Boy Who Learned to Read at Twelve
When A Bing was twelve, he still could not read a full sentence. Other boys in the village called him “the slow one”. Teachers were kind, but they were busy. His father worked on a fishing boat and came home only once a month. His mother sold vegetables at the market before the sun rose.
One winter, a retired teacher named Mrs. Qian moved into the house next door. She saw A Bing sitting by the wall, copying road signs with a stick in the dirt. “You are not slow,” she said. “You just have not met the right word yet.”
Mrs. Qian did not give him baby books and tell him to hurry. She took him to the river and read poems about water. She let him draw fish first, then write the word “fish”. She played word games while they peeled garlic. Slowly, A Bing began to like the shape of letters. By spring, he could read a short story without help. By summer, he was reading newspaper headings aloud at the market, and customers laughed with surprise, not unkindly.
Years later, A Bing did not become a professor. He became a boat repairman. But every Friday night, he teaches three children from the lane to read. He uses the same trick Mrs. Qian used: start with what the child loves, and let the words grow from there.
“She could have rested,” A Bing says. “Instead, she gave a dirty-kneed boy the key to a whole new room.” He keeps an old stick on his workbench. It is not a pen. But to him, it is the thing that started everything.

Second, small daily help from a neighbour, teacher or parent can change the way we see ourselves. / No 也可,但需给出两条合理理由,如:Some changes come from oneself; famous examples may inspire more people at one time. 但本文倾向“普通人也能改变他人”,建议写 Yes。
五、书面表达
题目① 参考范文:
The inspiring person around me is my neighbour Grandma Wu. She is kind, patient and always ready to help others. Every weekend, she teaches left-behind children in our building to read and paint. She never gets angry when they make mistakes. When I failed my maths test, she encouraged me and said, “Slow steps still move forward.”
I look up to her because she shows that love does not need to be loud. From her, I have learned to be more patient and to help people around me. Her small kind acts make our neighbourhood warmer. I want to be someone like her one day.
题目② 参考范文:
Dear Lily,
The Chinese historical person I admire most is Li Qingzhao. She lived in the Song Dynasty and was one of the greatest woman poets in Chinese history. Although life was hard and she lost her husband and her home in wars, she kept writing poems about love, nature and her country.
I admire her because she was brave and talented in a time when women’s voices were seldom heard. She spent her life recording feelings with beautiful words. From her, we can learn to keep our hearts alive even in sad times, and to express our true feelings through writing.
I hope you will like her stories too.
Yours,
Li Hua
