The Wheel: An Invention That Changed the World
What do you think is the most important invention of all time? For many people, the answer is the wheel. It is believed to be one of the oldest inventions in human history.
Historians believe that the wheel was first used around 3500 BC in ancient Mesopotamia(美索不达米亚). At first, it was not used for transportation(交通). Instead, it was used by potters(陶工)to make clay pots. The potter's wheel allowed them to create round and balanced pots much more easily than before.
It took about 300 years for people to realize that the wheel could also be used for moving things. The first wheeled vehicles(车辆)were probably simple carts pulled by animals. This changed the world completely. Goods(货物)could be transported over long distances. Trade developed between different places, and civilizations(文明)could share their cultures.
Today, the wheel is everywhere — in cars, bikes, trains, and machines. It has become such a common part of our lives that we hardly think about it. But without the wheel, the modern world as we know it would be impossible.
24. What was the wheel first used for?
A. Transportation. B. Making clay pots.
C. Building houses. D. Pulling carts with animals
25. How did the wheel change the world?
A. It helped people make clothes more easily.
B. It made it possible to transport goods over long distances.
C. It was used to create the first television.
D. It helped people learn to read and write.
26. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. The wheel is no longer useful today.
B. The wheel is everywhere but we often don't notice it.
C. The wheel is only used in cars and bikes.
D. People are trying to invent something to replace the wheel.
C

Turning Ideas into Reality with 3D Printers
Have you ever imagined turning your ideas into real objects with the press of a button? With 3D printers, this is now possible.
A 3D printer is a machine that can create three-dimensional(三维的)objects from a digital file(数字文件). The object is first designed on a computer. Then the file is sent to the printer, which builds the object layer by layer(逐层地)using materials(材料)like plastic(塑料).
What can 3D printers make? Almost anything! Toys, chairs, tables, and even parts of houses can all be made by 3D printers. In medicine, 3D printers are used to make artificial(人造的)body parts. In the food industry, they can even print chocolate and other foods! Scientists believe that in the future, 3D printers will be used to build houses on other planets(星球).
Perhaps the most exciting thing about 3D printers is that they allow anyone to become an inventor. You don't need a big factory — just an idea and a 3D printer. As one expert(专家)said, "3D printing is not just about making things. It is about turning creative ideas into reality."
27. How does a 3D printer create an object?
A. It cuts materials with a sharp knife.
B. It builds the object layer by layer from a digital file.
C. It mixes different liquids together.
D. It shapes materials by hand.
28. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as something 3D printers can make?
A. Toys. B. Chairs. C. Airplanes. D. Artificial body parts.
29. What makes 3D printers special according to the passage?
A. They are very cheap to buy.
B. They can only be used in big factories.
C. They allow anyone to become an inventor.
D. They were invented thousands of years ago.
D
阅读下列短文,根据短文内容,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选择最佳选项。
Smart Inventions That Protect Animals
When we think about great inventions, we often think of things like phones, computers, or high-speed trains. But some of the most creative inventions are designed not for people, but for animals.
One great example is the animal bridge. In many countries, highways cut through forests and mountains where wild animals live. Every year, thousands of animals are killed when they try to cross these roads. To solve this problem, animal bridges were built. These bridges are covered with grass and trees to make them look like a natural part of the forest. Animals can cross the road safely without ever seeing a car.
Another smart invention is the fish ladder(鱼梯). When dams(水坝)are built across rivers, fish can no longer swim upstream to lay their eggs(产卵). A fish ladder is like a set of steps that allows fish to swim around the dam. Water flows down each step, and fish can jump from one step to the next until they reach the other side.
These inventions show that creative ideas can solve all kinds of problems — even problems that are not our own. They remind us that being creative is not just about making human life better. It is also about protecting the world we share with other living things(生物).
So next time you learn about a great invention, ask yourself: who is it really helping?
30. Why were animal bridges built?
A. To help wild animals cross roads safely.
B. To make highways look more beautiful.
C. To give drivers a place to rest.
D. To connect different cities.
31. How does a fish ladder help fish?
A. It carries fish in a special vehicle.
B. It allows fish to swim around dams step by step.
C. It moves the dam to a different place.
D. It teaches fish a new way to lay eggs.
32. What does the word "they" in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. The wild animals. B. The dams.
C. The fish ladders. D. The animal bridges and fish ladders.
33. What is the main message of the passage?
A. Inventions should only be made for people.
B. Creative ideas can help both humans and animals.
C. Animal bridges are more important than phones.
D. Fish ladders are the most useful invention.
第二部分 非选择题(共20分)
四、阅读与表达。(本大题共4小题;第34-36题每题2分,第37题4分,共10分)
The First Radio Message Across the Atlantic
On 12 December 1901, something amazing happened. A radio message was sent across the Atlantic Ocean for the first time in history. The man behind this great achievement(成就)was an Italian inventor named Guglielmo Marconi.
At that time, many scientists believed that radio waves(无线电波)could only travel in straight lines. Because the Earth is round, they thought it was impossible to send a message across the ocean. But Marconi believed it could be done. He spent years developing his idea and trying out(测试)different equipment(设备).
On that historic day, Marconi was on a hill in Newfoundland, Canada. He flew a kite with an antenna(天线)attached to it — the antenna was needed to receive the signal. Suddenly, through his earphones(耳机), he heard three short sounds: dot-dot-dot(滴滴滴). It was the letter "S" in Morse code(莫尔斯电码), sent from a station in England, over 3,000 kilometres away!
Marconi's success changed the world. It proved that wireless communication(无线通信)across long distances was possible. People could now share information across oceans without wires or cables(线缆). This invention later led to the development of radio, television, and even the mobile phones we use today.
Marconi's story teaches us an important lesson: when you believe in your idea, don't let other people's doubts(怀疑)stop you. Keep trying, and your ideas may one day change the world — just as Marconi's did.
34. Who sent the first radio message across the Atlantic Ocean?

【答案】24.B 25.B 26.B

29.主旨总结。末段"they allow anyone to become an inventor"和"You don't need a big factory"说明其特别之处。A、B、D三项与原文矛盾。故选C。
【答案】30.A 31.B 32.D 33.B
第二段"thousands of animals are killed...To solve this problem, animal bridges were built"说明建桥原因。B/C/D非真正原因。故选A。
31.原理理解。第三段"allows fish to swim around the dam...jump from one step to the next"描述鱼梯工作原理。A/C/D与原文不符。故选B。
32.指代判断。第四段"These inventions show..."指代前两段介绍的animal bridges和fish ladders两种发明。A/C项片面,B项错误。故选D。
33.主旨总结。全文强调创新的力量不仅在于让人类生活更好,也在于保护动物——"Creative ideas can solve all kinds of problems"。A、C、D三项均片面或过于绝对。故选B。
第二部分 非选择题(共20分)

例文(题目②):
Dear Mark,
I'm happy to hear about your project on great inventions. I'd like to introduce papermaking to you.
Papermaking was improved by Cai Lun in ancient China around 105 AD. Before paper was invented, people wrote on bamboo or silk. Bamboo was heavy and silk was expensive. Cai Lun used tree bark, old cloth, and fishing nets to make paper. This made writing much cheaper and easier.
Later on, the art of papermaking spread to Korea, Japan, and then to the Arab world and Europe. It greatly speeded up cultural communication(文化交流)across the world. I think paper is one of the greatest Chinese inventions because it helped knowledge reach every corner of the world.
I hope this helps with your project! Let me know if you want to learn more.
Yours,
Li Hua
