Silk Painting Discovered at Mawangdui Tombs
In August 2026, researchers from Hunan Museum made a remarkable discovery at the Mawangdui Tombs in Changsha, Hunan. They found a well-preserved silk painting that dates back more than 2,000 years.
The painting, which measures 60 centimetres by 40 centimetres, was found in a lacquerware box that had been sealed for centuries. It shows scenes of daily life in the Han Dynasty, including farming, fishing, and celebrations.
“This is a very important discovery,” said Dr. Liu, one of the lead researchers. “The painting is so well preserved that we can see the details clearly. It gives us a true picture of life in the Han Dynasty.”
The researchers have been using special technology to study the painting without damaging it. They found that the painting was made with natural pigments—colours made from plants and minerals.
“Studying this painting is like reading a history book,” Dr. Liu said. “It tells us about the clothes people wore, the tools they used, and the festivals they celebrated. It shows that life in the Han Dynasty was not so different from today in some ways.”
The painting is now being prepared for exhibition at the Hunan Museum. It is expected to attract many visitors when it opens to the public next year.
“This discovery tells us that we still have much to learn about our past,” Dr. Liu added. “Every object we find has a story to tell.”

38.According to Dr. Liu, what does the painting tell us about the Han Dynasty?
A.People in the Han Dynasty lived very differently from us.
B.People in the Han Dynasty did not have festivals.
C.People in the Han Dynasty had some similarities to people today.
D.People in the Han Dynasty did not wear clothes.

B.People in the Han Dynasty did not have festivals.
C.People in the Han Dynasty had some similarities to people today.
