Parents often go above and beyond to give their children a good life, with many of their efforts going unrecognized until their kids grow up. In the case of a man in China, the incident that reminded him of his mum’s deep devotion was when she hand-sewed a brand logo onto his bag as a teenager.
Mr Liu, who is now 22 years old, recounted the story on Douyin, instantly touching netizens’ hearts. Mr Liu asked his mum for a branded backpack when he was 14, after seeing his classmates carrying branded bags in school. However, his mother turned down his request, as their family business was struggling at the time. Instead, she took his plain red bag and hand-embroidered a logo on it.
After the holidays, Mr Liu noticed the logo on his bag and felt overjoyed, thinking it was incredibly beautiful. Unfortunately, his classmates teased him about it being a knock-off, so he deliberately damaged it before hiding it in his closet. “Back then, I was young and thought this bag was embarrassing. Looking back, I think it’s the most priceless treasure in the world,” he expressed.
Following his viral post, the brand commended Mr Liu’s mum for her sewing and offered to send her a gift.
Many people online said they were moved by his mum’s love, with some sharing their own big brands’ logos which had been embroidered by their mums or girlfriends. “This is a one-of-a-kind luxury item,” one online observer said. “This is the most beautiful logo I have ever seen,” said another. As kids, we often don’t appreciate the love and effort our mums put in until we grow up and realize what a privilege (荣幸) it is to have a loving mum.
Now living over a thousand kilometers apart, and with his mum unable to return home for four years due to costly airfares, Mr Liu cried that she seemed to look different each time he saw her. “Mum, your son is starting to earn money now and can help ease the family burden,” Mr Liu expressed. “I hope you can come home soon.”
4.Why did Mr Liu’s mum refuse to buy him the backpack he wanted?
A.The family couldn’t afford it at that time.
B.She wanted to make him a bag herself.
C.She didn’t like the brand.
D.Branded bags were unnecessary for students.
5.How did Mr Liu react when he first saw the embroidered logo?
A.He complained that it was fake. B.He considered it delicate.
C.He felt embarrassed by the design. D.He ignored it and used the bag as usual.
6.What can we infer from people’s comments online?
A.They criticized Mr Liu for hiding the bag. B.They were surprised that the brand responded.
C.They thought mother’s love is priceless. D.They questioned whether the story was true.
7.What does Mr Liu’s message to his mum mainly express?

Kids have always pushed limits and asked for things that could be harmful to them. While kids explore parents’ “edges” of limits, parents are really struggling to do theirs, making the family system unbalanced and affecting mental health Actually, an important basic rule has been forgotten in their lives: boundaries (边界).
The cost of not being able to set boundaries with kids has never been higher. Decades ago, it might be a small thing like an extra cupcake or staying out late. Now, it’s about unlimited TikTok use or too many video games instead of real-world activities. Parents are facing a problem — not only a problem of phones and social media, but also a problem of Sturdy Leadership.
Sturdy Leadership is a way for parents to be in charge where they set rules and still keep a close relationship with their children. They do this by recognizing their child’s feelings while holding firm (坚定) on what is best for everyone.
Imagine a father just told his 12-year-old daughter “no” when she asked to have a party too late and she is understandably annoyed with him about not getting what she wants. In this moment, Sturdy Leadership could look something like this: “I get that you’re upset, and I really do. But one of my main jobs is to make decisions that I think are good for you, even when you’re upset with me. And staying out too late is a dangerous thing for a child of your age.”
This shift in approach that is calm, matter-of-fact, and not shaming has resulted in kids calming and adapting much more quickly. It has also significantly reduced their power struggles.
Boundary setting — early and often — is important. When the day comes that our kids ask for a phone, our approach will not be different from the common “media policy” we have as parents; our approach will simply be an extended (延伸的) way we’ve always talked to our kids about what they want and ask for. While our kids may not fully understand our decisions at the time, they will, years later, very much benefit from our words and acts of protection.
8.What basic rules have parents often forgotten according to paragraph 1?
A.Having a balanced daily lifestyle. B.Drawing clear family boundaries.
C.Allowing kids to push limits. D.Paying more attention to mental health.
9.What modern challenge do parents primarily face?
A.Few daily outdoor activities. B.Rising school education pressure.
C.Kids’ endless online addiction. D.Lack of technological knowledge.
10.Which of the following is key to Sturdy Leadership?
A.Combining rules with emotional support. B.Explaining the rules and reasons repeatedly.
C.Giving in to avoid long arguments. D.Ensuring enough personal space and freedom.
11.What does the text mainly talk about?
A.Ways to control kids’ online time. B.Methods to comfort upset kids.
C.Causes of parent-child conflicts. D.Proper family boundary setting.

You’d be excused from thinking that life in a tropical forest is easy. A lazy arm movement is all that’s needed to secure the next mouthful of food. But it’s not like that at all. Life in the rainforest demands extraordinary adaptations. That’s why I found myself collecting the remnants (残留物) of the most recent meal of the endangered red-nosed cuxiu monkey for my recent study.
Cuxius are cat-sized animals, with canines bigger than human teeth, even though their skull is the size of an orange. Canines of the cuxiu are the real deal: designed for cracking open hard, unripe fruits to get at the equally unripe and hard seeds. Humans would need a hammer to crack open this kind of fruit. But cuxius and their near relations bite them open. Powered by massive muscles, the jaws can deliver a bite which, if scaled for size, is equal to that of a jaguar. They eat hundreds of rock-hard fruits a week, tens of thousands over their ten-year life span. So, I wanted to know: How do they avoid cracking their teeth along with the nuts?
Pick up a walnut (核桃) and you’ll notice a thin line running around the hard shell. This is the suture (缝线), and it’s where the shell would naturally break open to free the seed when it ripens. Fruits with sutures dominate the diet of the red-nosed cuxiu, so I wondered if this could be the key to the cuxiu’s success.
Measurements of the force needed for a copy of a cuxiu canine showed this was the case. It took up to 70% less force to go in at the suture than elsewhere on the fruits the cuxiu ate.
There’s the fact that every animal in the rainforest needs to be its own doctor, physiotherapist and fitness coach. Survival in the rainforest depends on alertness and clever survival strategies. An animal’s survival depends not only on knowing what to eat but how to eat it. Seconds count when a bite too many can mean missing the one key glance skywards that stops you from becoming someone else’s breakfast.
12.What can we know about the cuxius?
A.They can live for around ten years. B.They are equal to a jaguar in size.
C.They prefer eating soft and ripe fruits. D.They are similar to a cat in appearance.
13.What does the underlined phrase “the cuxiu’s success” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Finding enough walnuts to feed on. B.Understanding the function of fruit suture.
C.Consuming hard fruits without cracking teeth. D.Taking over the rainforest.
14.What can we infer about the rainforest animals?
A.They can serve as doctors to care for each other.
B.They have to stay highly alarmed during a meal.
C.They must value every second for food hunting.
D.They should eat smart for their health.
15.What is the best title for the text?
A.The Cuxius: the Master of Eating Hard Fruits
B.A Study on the Endangered Cuxius
C.Living in the Rainforest: Easy or Hard?
D.How Animals in the Rainforest Avoid Tooth Damage
When my son was a child, he liked to run in our driveway until he fell. He would then turn to me to see if he was hurt. If my face showed worry or if I called out suddenly, he would cry. If I remained calm, he would brush himself off and get back to running. 16
We’re born to prevent our children from suffering. 17 This strong desire has given rise to the popular pushy parenting styles, including the “Helicopter Parent”, who flies to rescue a child in danger, and the “Snowplow Parent”, who flattens blocks in children’s way. As a result, these young kids usually believe that they are not capable of acting on their own, feeding both anxiety and dependence.
18 Like a lighthouse guiding sailors without controlling their course, “Lighthouse Parent” offers dependable support and clear rules, while letting kids manage their own challenges. They trust their kids to deal with difficult situations independently, knowing when to step back and how to let them find their own way.
One of the most important changes from being overprotective is to replace our desire to fix problems with the patience to listen. A fix-it mindset is focused on quick solutions. 19 It expresses confidence in your child’s ability to cope with challenges, however messy they might be.
Parents can clearly recall the feeling they had when they first held their child. But what we must keep in mind is that with children growing, we must move from the role of boss to that of adviser. 20
A.Why is he so dependent on me?
B.It is effective to reduce bad emotions.
C.It frees us up and empowers them to develop.
D.We tend to clear up troubles for them by nature.
E.Listening, by contrast, allows emotions to exist fully.
F.Such moments made me reflect on parents’ true role in raising kids.
G.Fortunately, a more measured approach to parenting appears in response.

When it came time to hunt, Dawn and Duffy took the lead, 39 (successful) bringing down prey and then calling out so their mother could join them 40 (enjoy) the feast. It’s a level of care that stands out in the wild, where injured or disabled animals are often left to fend (自谋生计) for themselves.

It was a chilly Saturday afternoon. Lily was walking through the woods behind her house, breathing in the fresh smell of pine. She loved wandering along the winding path whenever she felt tired of her schoolwork. Leaves crunched under her sneakers as she walked slowly, looking up now and then at busy squirrels jumping from branch to branch.
Suddenly, a faint squeak caught her ear. Puzzled, she stopped and scanned the bushes nearby. There, under a thick bush, lay a small squirrel. One of its back legs looked twisted. It trembled slightly, its bright black eyes wide with fear. It tried to run away but could barely move. Lily’s heart ached. She looked around, expecting its mother to appear, but no adult squirrel showed up.
Knowing she could not leave it there to face coldness or wild cats, Lily carefully cupped the little creature in her hands. It was light and soft. She hurried home. Her parents were surprised when she walked in with the tiny patient. After a short discussion, they agreed to help. Lily made a warm little box with soft cloth, found some nuts and fruit, and searched online for ways to care for an injured squirrel.
Day after day, Lily checked on it. She fed it gently, cleaned its box, and watched its wound get better little by little. At first the squirrel hid in the corner, afraid of her. Gradually, it grew less nervous. Sometimes it would sit quietly and stare at Lily while she read beside the box. Weeks passed. The squirrel could jump again. Lily realized the time might come when she had to set it free.

根据第一段“Actually, an important basic rule has been forgotten in their lives: boundaries (边界). (事实上,他们在生活中遗忘了一条重要的基本准则:边界。)”可知,家长常常忘记的基本准则是设立清晰的家庭边界。
9.细节理解题。根据第二段“Now, it’s about unlimited TikTok use or too many video games instead of real-world activities. (现在,问题在于无节制地刷TikTok或者玩太多电子游戏,缺少参与现实世界的活动)”可知,家长如今面临的主要现代挑战是孩子无休止的网络沉迷。
10.细节理解题。根据第三段“Sturdy Leadership is a way for parents to be in charge where they set rules and still keep a close relationship with their children. They do this by recognizing their child’s feelings while holding firm (坚定) on what is best for everyone.
D
【答案】12.A 13.C 14.B 15.A
根据原文第二段“They eat hundreds of rock-hard fruits a week, tens of thousands over their ten-year life span. (它们一周要吃掉数百个像石头一样坚硬的果实,在十年的寿命中要吃掉上万个。)”可知,它们大约能活十年。
13.词句猜测题。根据原文第二段“So, I wanted to know: How do they avoid cracking their teeth along with the nuts? (所以,我想知道:它们是怎样在咬开坚果的同时,避免咬坏自己牙齿的?)”及第三段“Fruits with sutures dominate the diet of the red-nosed cuxiu, so I wondered if this could be the key to the cuxiu’s success. (带有果缝的果实是红鼻丛尾猴的主要食物,于是我猜想,这或许就是它们得以成功的关键。)”可知,“the cuxiu’s success”指的是它们食用坚硬果实却不咬坏牙齿这件事。
14.推理判断题。根据原文最后一段“Seconds count when a bite too many can mean missing the one key glance skywards that stops you from becoming someone else’s breakfast. (分秒必争,多咬一口就意味着错过抬头观察天敌的关键一眼,而这一眼能让自己不成为别的动物的早餐。)”可知,雨林动物进食时必须时刻保持高度警惕。
15.主旨大意题。根据原文第二段“So, I wanted to know: How do they avoid cracking their teeth along with the nuts?(所以,我想知道:它们是怎样在咬开坚果的同时,避免咬坏自己牙齿的?)”
【答案】16.F 17.D 18.G 19.E 20.C

19.由上文“A fix-it mindset is focused on quick solutions.(解决问题的心态专注于快速解决方案。)”以及下文“It expresses confidence in your child’s ability to cope with challenges, however messy they might be.(它表达了对孩子应对挑战能力的信心,无论这些挑战有多么混乱。)”
20.由上文“But what we must keep in mind is that with children growing, we must move from the role of boss to that of adviser.(但我们必须记住,随着孩子的成长,我们必须从老板的角色转变为顾问的角色。)”

In the Eastern Cape of South Africa, a lioness named Josie overcame hardship in a way few animals ever do. After 36 (lose) her sight more than five years ago, Josie continued to live in the wild well into old age — not alone, but 37 (support) every step of the way by her two daughters, Dawn and Duffy.
Her daughters always stayed close to her side, making sure there was no chance of her 38 (leave) behind.
Visitors and rangers (护林员) who saw Josie over the years described her as 41 symbol of resilience (坚韧) and courage. Despite her 42 (blind), she continued moving across the grassland, relying 43 the strong and firm bond she shared with her daughters.
In late 2025, Josie’s journey came to an end, but her story continues to inspire. In a place 44 survival can be harsh and unforgiving, this small family showed something 45 (remark) — that even in the wild, compassion and connection can make all the difference.

Paragraph 1:
One morning, Lily noticed the squirrel was restless in its box. It kept climbing the sides and scratching the cover, eager to get out. Clearly, it longed for the wide woods instead of the small box. Though unwilling to say goodbye, Lily knew home for a squirrel was nature. She carried the box back to the spot where she had found it. She opened the lid slowly. For a moment, the squirrel hesitated. Then it hopped out, paused on a stone, and looked back at Lily as if to thank her.
Paragraph 2:
Watching the squirrel disappear among the trees, Lily felt mixed emotions. A little sadness welled up inside her because she would miss the lovely friend. Yet joy took over when she thought it could run freely again. She had not only saved a life but also learned that love sometimes means letting go. From then on, whenever she walked in the woods, she hoped she might catch sight of her little squirrel somewhere in the branches.
