例题1. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My wife and I wanted to share our new home with family and friends by hosting a small gathering in the early summer. She had prepared lots of snacks, while my job was to have the backyard in order.
There was plenty of space for the kids to run and play. There was just one thing I hadn’t counted on: My brother chose to bring his dog Toby, a 50-pound ball of fire. Though friendly, he could easily knock over my niece’s small boys and my six-month-old granddaughter. So, when my brother showed up, I asked him to watch Toby and keep him outside.
My plan was working out just fine. Toby was using up his energy by running back and forth in the backyard and giving the kids plenty of room. Unexpectedly, after supper, the weather changed. It started to rain and everyone went indoors.
It was an awkward moment. I didn’t want Toby to be running around in the house, and my brother wasn’t happy with driving home with a wet dog. Eventually, my brother decided to leave rather than force the issue.
A few days passed, and I hadn’t heard anything from my brother. I texted him and expressed wishes for him to come out again. His reply came as a surprise — a shock, actually: “Not a chance.” Clearly, he was unhappy over the way we had parted. After all, I had left him little choice. Well, he’ll get over it, I reasoned.
Two months passed. My wife suggested I get in touch with my brother, but I resisted, thinking he should call first. However, my conscience(良心) kept bothering me. I tried to put myself in my brother’s shoes. He was facing health issues and his wife of thirty-five years had passed away a few months earlier. Toby was his constant companion, the one who kept him going.

Passage 1
(2025-2026学年高一下·湖南长沙·期末)Two months ago, I was riding home to our farm near Beltrami, Minnesota, in our Ford with my mom, dad, brother and two sisters. We had just been to a movie at the Fox Theatre and were dressed in mild winter clothes for the family outing in the cold winter.
On the way home my dad stopped to help a stranger whose car had got stuck on the snow-covered railroad tracks. My father and the man couldn’t move the car, so my father told us to get out and help. We pushed the stranger’s car back into the road so he could get his automobile running again.
As we approached a farm, a roaring(咆哮的) wall of snow from the northwest caused my dad to slow the car down. The intensity of the snow increased every moment until Dad could no longer drive the car and pulled the blue Ford over to the side of the road.
About an hour had passed when the Ford’s engine died from exhaust pipe (排气管) blockage and the temperature dropped inside the car to -20℃. The wind was blowing hard, so my parents told us to stay in the car. We all were scared to death. My parents looked at each other and we could sense the seriousness of the situation. My feet stung(刺痛) as the cold air bit through my ankles, so I sat on my feet to keep them warm. The total darkness outside made me sad. As the night progressed my mother said prayers, told stories, and worked very hard to keep us all awake. My dad was strong but his courage was tested; there was a point when he started singing. I had never heard my dad sing but the seriousness in his voice only made me wonder if I would be found frozen or alive. Somehow we all made it through our fears and doubts until the morning’s light. As the sun rose my dad knew he had to go for help.

Passage 2
(2025-2026学年高一下·海南海口·期末)“Grandpa, can you teach me how to ride a bike?” asked seven-year-old Tom, looking up at his grandfather with hopeful eyes. It was a warm Saturday afternoon, and they were in the park near Tom’s house.
Grandpa smiled and looked at the small red bike with training wheels. “Of course, Tom. Learning to ride a bike is one of the most important things in life.” He walked with Tom to a flat, quiet path under some big trees. “First, I will hold the bike for you. Just sit on the seat, put your feet on the pedals, and look straight ahead. Don’t look down.”
Tom got on the bike, his small hands tightly holding the handlebars. His heart was beating fast. Grandpa held the back of the seat and started to push. “Pedal! Pedal!” Grandpa shouted. Tom pedaled as fast as he could, but after a few seconds, the bike started to wobble. Tom lost his balance and fell onto the grass.
Tom sat on the ground, holding his knee. There was a small cut, and a single tear ran down his cheek. He looked at the bike as if it were an enemy. “I want to give up,” he whispered.

Passage 3
(2025-2026学年高一下·湖北荆州·期末)We lived in the quiet countryside when I was four and a half years old. Back then, life was simple, without the modern equipment we see today. Our house sat on a high bank overlooking a road — not a busy one, as public buses didn’t go that way. To reach the main road, you had to walk for nearly thirty minutes.
Those were dark terrible times for our family. We lived a very poor life and could only make ends meet. My father worked far away and, like many men of that time, could only come home on weekends. In this hopeless situation, my older brother — just two years my senior — started school. The housework fell on my mother, who was also caring for my three-month-old baby sister. I remember watching my mother sometimes cry sad tears alone, the weight of the world falling heavily on her shoulders.
One morning, Mom faced a terrible dilemma: she had to walk my brother to school, but she couldn’t take all three of us. With no other choice, she fed my baby sister, laid her into bed surrounded by pillows just in case she would fall, and asked me to stay still and quiet. “I’ll be back as fast as I can,” she promised.
But in a poor area where nothing was certain, being late was unavoidable. As the minutes stretched (延长) into an hour, I stood by the window, my small eyes fixed on the empty road. Suddenly, a thud (砰的一声) came from the bedroom, followed by a loud scream of my baby sister.

Passage 4
(2025-2026学年高一下·河南新乡·期末)The moment I got into Mom’s car, she told me the news. “You have to stay with Grandpa while I go to work today,” she said. A wave of disappointment swept over me. “What?! Can’t I stay with Dad?” I protested. “He’s out of town,” Mom replied. I knew the conversation was over. We drove to Grandpa’s apartment in uncomfortable quietness. His place was gloomy(昏暗的), and he seemed distant, barely looking up from the TV when we arrived. Mom left me there with a promise to be back in an hour and a half.
After my homework was done in just 20 minutes, dead silence filled the room. Grandpa turned off the TV, and we sat there, with him patting his legs, and me moving my body from side to side on the old couch. Suddenly, I felt something hard under the couch with my feet. So I reached down and pulled out a wooden box. “Oh, my chess set,” Grandpa said, some interest in his eyes. “Chess?” I asked, surprised. He offered to teach me, and I agreed. Then he patiently explained the moves of each piece to me.
Finally, we were ready to play. In the first game, Grandpa guided me through every move, but I was quickly defeated. “Now you know how to play, more or less,” he said. “This time, I’m not going to go easy on you.” True to his word, he beat me in just nine moves in the second game, and again in the third. I was awkward but I didn’t want to give up. I started watching him more carefully, trying hard to figure out his strategies and traps. I slowed down, thinking through every possible result of my moves. In the sixth or seventh game, I began to understand the deeper connections on the board. I even managed to concentrate so hard that for a moment, it seemed Grandpa had to really focus. Even though I lost again, I felt a strange sense of pride.

Two moves into another game, Mom came back.

Passage 5
(2025-2026学年高一下·河北邢台·期末)I grew up with my grandpa. He raised me with great love and patience. Every morning, he would gently wake me up with a soft call, not letting me be late for school. He always made my favorite noodles and eggs for breakfast, which was warm and delicious. After school, he would sit beside me, helping me with my math problems and listening to me read English. With his love and care, I studied hard and got good grades in every exam. I was also healthy and strong, because he often took me for a walk after dinner and told me interesting stories on the way.
When I was in Grade One of senior high school, something terrible happened. My grandpa got sick. The doctor said he needed to rest at home for a long time. He looked very weak and sad. He did not want to talk much. He even stopped eating his favorite food. I felt very worried. I said to myself, “What can I do for him? He has done so much for me. It is my turn to help him.”
So every day after school, I went straight home to stay with my grandpa, without stopping to play with my friends. I told him all the interesting things that happened at school, like how my classmates made funny mistakes in class and how our teacher told us attractive stories about animals. Grandpa was always amused by these stories.
Sometimes, I played chess with him. He had taught me chess when I was five. But now, because of his old age, his judgment was much worse than before. He often took a long time to make a move. I saw all that clearly. I knew he was not as sharp as he used to be. So I chose to lose on purpose. I made a careless move or left my pieces open. When he won, a big smile came to his face. That smile was worth more than any victory of my own. Seeing him happy made me feel warm.

I also made a card for him.

Passage 6
(2025-2026学年高一下·河南南阳·期末)My dad finally took us camping by the sea. I had been looking forward to it, but maybe for the wrong reason. I thought I could go online and text my friends all day. After all, what was the point of a beautiful beach if you couldn’t share it? I imagined posting photos and watching the likes pile up. That sounded like the perfect day.
We got there around noon. The sun was bright, the water was a deep sparkling blue, and the sand felt warm beneath my feet. My little brother Jack ran straight into the shallow water, screaming with joy. My sister Lily, only six, started picking up shells one by one, holding each to her ear as if listening to a secret. “Come and play!” they shouted, their voices full of excitement. I just found a smooth rock to sit on, pulled out my phone, and started scrolling.
My dad stood at the water’s edge, looking out at the sea. “Isn’t it beautiful?” he said softly. I nodded without looking up. Jack and Lily came running to me again and again. “Look at this shell!” “Let’s build something!” I kept saying. “In a minute,” I added, without moving my eyes from the screen. But that minute never came. The sun climbed higher, and I stayed right where I was.
Then I saw my dad walking toward me. His face was serious, not angry but disappointed. “Have you seen the sea?” he asked. I said nothing. “Have you heard your brother laugh?” Still nothing. He reached down, took my phone gently but firmly from my hands, and put it into his bag. “No phone for the rest of the day,” he said. I was so angry that I could feel my face burn. I crossed my arms tightly and sat there on the rock, refusing to move, refusing to speak, and refusing to even look at anyone. The faint sound of playful voices and laughter murmured in my ears.

I realized it was me who was at fault. I had been so focused on keeping the party under control that I failed to consider how important Toby was to my brother during this difficult time. My pride had kept me from reaching out, and now months had passed without a proper conversation. One evening, I picked up the phone and left him a voice message, apologizing for my behavior and asking if we could meet. To my relief, he called back the next day, and we agreed to get together soon.
With the biscuits my wife had made, I arrived at my brother’s door. He opened it with a surprised smile, and for a moment, neither of us spoke. Then we hugged — something we hadn’t done since before his wife passed away. We sat on the porch with Toby resting beside us, and I handed him the box of biscuits. “Thank you,” he said quietly. We talked for hours, laughing, remembering old times, and slowly rebuilding what had been lost. As I watched Toby gently rest his head on my brother’s leg, I knew we were finally on the path to healing.

Ways to talk with parents
Many students may meet problems in everyday life. And they may ask their parents for help. What are the good ways to talk with parents?
First, we should choose a good time to talk. When our parents are free, we can sit down and have a talk with them face to face. Second, we’d better talk about the problems directly so that our parents may think about them at once. Third, we should ask them for help politely. Don’t speak loudly or quickly. When our parents tell us their ideas or plans, we must listen to them carefully. Finally, we should thank them for their help.

Dad struggled through the deep snow before reaching a farmhouse. He knocked on the door, and the owner opened it right away. After hearing what Dad said, the man quickly gave Dad a warm blanket and some food. Dad offered to pay, but the man firmly declined the money. Back in the car, we shared the food and wrapped ourselves in the blanket. The warmth offered momentary relief, but we still felt concerned. Seeing our worried faces, Mom suggested we sing together, her voice soft but stable against the violent wind.
Hours later, we saw a snow-clearing truck come by to clear the road. My father rushed out to greet the crew and get their assistance in pulling the blue Ford out of the huge white snow bank. We pulled the car into the farmyard, where it could defrost. Eventually, the engine coughed into life, and we made the journey home — though all of us nursed minor frostbite. Looking back, we’ll always credit those strangers with saving our lives; without their kindness, the storm might have had the last word. I also came to understand the true meaning of the proverb: “One good turn deserves another.”

Failing is when you stop trying.” Tom thought for a moment, then nodded slowly. “Okay, Grandpa. I’ll try again,” he said.
Two hours later, Tom was riding his bike all by himself. His small legs pumped the pedals fast, and the wind blew through his hair. Grandpa stood at the end of the path, clapping his hands and shouting, “You did it! You did it!” Tom could not stop smiling. He rode back to his grandfather, jumped off the bike, and gave him a big hug. “Thank you, Grandpa. I’ll never give up again.” That afternoon, Tom learned one of life’s most important lessons: courage is not about not falling, but about getting up every time you fall.

I ran like an arrow to the room. My little sister had rolled off the bed and was crying on the cold wooden floor, her tiny face red with tears. Panic flooded my young heart, but I quickly picked her up, patting her gently, trying to calm her down. However, the more I tried to comfort her, the louder she cried. I held her in my arms and walked back and forth, but my four-year-old arms soon got tired. Just when I felt I could no longer hold on, a fierce love for my sister gave me unexpected strength. I held her even tighter and let out a cry for help. (103 words)
Then I saw Mom running towards us with a pale face full of anxiety. The moment I caught sight of her, I felt a wave of relief. She had heard our cries and rushed towards us quickly. Breathless as she was, she knelt down and hugged us both tightly, tears welling up in her eyes. As she held us, the world felt safe again. Decades have passed, but when I look back, I can still feel that pressure in my chest — the heavy weight of my sister and the even heavier weight of the responsibility I took on that day. It taught me that even the smallest heart can carry a massive burden when it’s carried with love. (107 words)

She sat at the table and watched us play, seeming delighted to see we got along so well. Grandpa and I looked up at her once in a while. When I lost again, Mom told me it was time to go back home. Though I was unwilling to stop the game, I knew I had no choice but to agree to leave. Sensing my disappointment, Grandpa patted my shoulder gently and encouraged me to keep practicing my chess skills. We therefore made a sincere promise to meet and continue our chess games the next weekend.
On the way home, I kept thinking about the promise between Grandpa and me. I recalled the whole afternoon we spent playing chess, talking and laughing happily. Gone was the former awkward silence that once filled Grandpa’s gloomy little apartment. I used to feel distant and unfamiliar with Grandpa, having few topics to talk about and always feeling nervous to stay alone with him. However, a simple chess game successfully bridged the gap between us. I still felt amazed at how our awkward afternoon turned into such a precious time. And it was this small and warm connection that shortened our distance and let true family affection bloom quietly.

I took a piece of yellow paper and folded it into two parts. On the front, I drew a big sun and some green trees. Inside, I wrote with my best handwriting: “Dear Grandpa, you are the best person in my life. Please get well soon. I love you forever.” I gave it to him one evening. He held the card in his hands for a long time. Tears came to his eyes, but he was smiling. He said it was the best gift he had ever received.
Day by day, my grandpa’s mood got better and better. He started to talk more and eat more. When he looked at the card I made, his eyes were full of warmth. Later, the doctor said he was getting better too. I was so happy to see these changes. I sat by his bed and held his hand, telling him that I would always stay with him. I realized that my company was the best gift for him. It didn’t cost any money, but it could bring him happiness and strength. This made me feel proud of myself, because I could take care of the person who had taken care of me for so many years.

After a while, I looked up at the busy Jack and Lily. “Does the sea really have the magic of filling their hearts with joy?” I wondered in my mind. Though confused, I decided to have a shot. The instant my feet touched the seawater, a wave of freshness and comfort washed over me. When I held a shell to my ear, I seemed to hear the wild cry of the ocean. Driven by an urge deep within me, I stepped closer and joined in their games. When the setting sun cast soft rays upon us and the boundless sea, we knew it was time to head back.
When we got back to the tent, Dad handed me my phone. “Here you are!” he said. I was still bathed in the joy of the sea, almost questioning whether I needed to carry my phone around at all. Sensing my hesitation, Dad placed the phone gently into my palm and added, “It’s great to embrace technological advances, but what really counts is how we make the most of them.” His words struck me. Eventually, I came to realize that technology exists to serve us, not to chain us to screens. The splendid world is calling us to explore, and the moments spent with family and nature will always be the true melody of life.
