Derek Redmond’s Olympic Moment
The 1992 Barcelona Olympics will always be remembered for many great moments, but few are as touching as the story of Derek Redmond, a British 400-metre runner.
On 3 August 1992, Derek stood at the starting line of the men’s 400m semi-final. He had trained for six years for this moment. As the race began, he felt confident. But halfway through, disaster struck — a sharp pain shot through his right hamstring. He collapsed to the track, crying out in agony.
The medical team rushed to his side. “My career is over,” Derek whispered, tears streaming down his face. The doctors advised him to withdraw, but Derek had other ideas. He stood up, his leg trembling with pain, and began to limp towards the finish line.
The crowd fell silent, then erupted into applause. Derek’s father, Jim Redmond, ran from the stands onto the track to support his son. Together, they walked the final 100 metres, with Derek leaning on his father’s shoulder. When they finally crossed the finish line, the entire stadium rose to their feet in a standing ovation.

On May 6, 2025, a 28-year-old Chinese snooker player named Zhao Xintong made sports history. He beat Welsh star Mark Williams 18-12 in the World Snooker Championship final. This was China’s first world champion in snooker ever! Before this, British players had won for 98 years, but now that long record was broken.
Zhao’s path to success was full of stories. In 2023, he had to stop playing for 20 months because people said he did something wrong in a match. But in September 2024, he came back. He started from the early qualifying games (资格赛) and played nine matches. He won 111 frames (parts of a snooker game)! In one game, he even beat seven-time champion Ronnie O’Sullivan 17-7. Zhao played bravely, and his skills got much better. He could make long shots right 80% of the time and scored 18 century breaks which is the same as Ding Junhui’s record in 2016!
The final against 50-year-old Williams was very exciting. Williams was the oldest player to reach the final. Zhao was ahead 17-8, but Williams tried hard and won four frames one after another. Then, in the 30th frame, Zhao stayed calm and made an 87-point break to win the game. “It’s like a dream,” Zhao said. When he got the trophy (奖杯), he held the Chinese flag high.
Ding Junhui, China’s snooker leader who once got second place in 2016, said, “He did what Chinese players have hoped for many years.” This win is like when Yao Ming made basketball popular in China.
Zhao’s story is about getting back up after falling. Even O’Sullivan said, “He’s like Federer in snooker — and we haven’t seen all he can do yet!” This win changes snooker history. It shows that if you never give up, you can turn problems into great success.

Have successful people ever felt sad? Do they have any “secrets” to success? The answers to these questions can be found in US President Barack Obama’s “Back to School” speech. Here is an excerpt (摘录) from his speech.
I know that sometimes, you get the sense that you can be rich and successful without any hard work—that your ticket to success is through rapping (饶舌音乐) or basketball or being a TV star, when chances are, you’re not going to be any of those things.
But the truth is, being successful is hard. You won’t love every subject you study. Not all the homework will seem completely important to your life right this minute. And you may not succeed at everything the first time you try.
That’s OK. Some of the most successful people in the world are the ones who’ve had the most failures. JK Rowling’s first Harry Potter book was turned down 12 times before it finally came out. Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team, and he lost hundreds of games and missed thousands of shots during his career. But he once said, “I have failed over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”
These people succeeded because they comprehend that you can’t let your failures beat you—you have to let them teach you. You have to let them show you what to do differently next time.
No one’s born being good at things. You become good at things through hard work. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. I do that every day. Asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness. It’s a sign of strength. It shows you have the courage to admit (承认) when you don’t know something, and to learn something new.
And even when you are struggling (奋斗), even when you are discouraged, and you feel like other people have given up on you—you don’t ever give up on yourself. Because when you give up on yourself, you give up on your country.
1.Who gave the “Back to School” speech?
A.Alexander Graham Bell. B.Barack Obama. C.Michael Jordan. D.JK Rowling.

B.To explain that writing and sports are difficult skills.
C.To describe that the two persons were treated unfairly.
D.To compare these two famous persons.
3.Which of the following does the writer probably disagree with?
A.No one can be successful without working hard.
B.Failure can be good if you treat it in the right way.
C.One should try his best to make his dream come true.
D.Those who believe in themselves shouldn’t ask others for help.
4.Which word is close to the underlined word “comprehend”?
A.Understand. B.Repeat. C.Suggest. D.Expect.
5.What is the best title for the text?

C.JK Rowling Achieved Great Success D.Never Giving up Is the Secret to Success
Recently, Michaela Benthaus, a 33-year-old German engineer, made history as the first wheelchair user to travel to space. Her dream-come-true journey took her beyond (在……之上) the clouds along with five other passengers, showing the world that anything is possible.
Seven years ago, a mountain bike accident changed Michaela’s life. She lost the ability to walk, but she never lost her dream of seeing the stars. Thanks to a company called Blue Origin, her dream finally came true.
As the rocket soared (升空) 105 km high, Michaela left her wheelchair on the ground. For the first time, she felt weightless.

He started from the early qualifying games (资格赛) and played nine matches. He won 111 frames (parts of a snooker game)! In one game, he even beat seven-time champion Ronnie O’Sullivan 17-7.
2.Why does Barack Obama mention JK Rowling and Michael Jordan?
A.To show that failure is the mother of success.

Inside the capsule (太空舱), she laughed with joy and even tried to turn upside down while looking at the Earth from above. “It was the coolest experience,” she said happily after landing.
The 10-minute flight took place in a special capsule called New Shepard. The company designed it to be accessible (可使用的) for everyone. To help Michaela, the company added a special board so she could move from the door to her seat. At the launch pad (发射台), a lift carried her to the top of the rocket.
