Passage1
Out of Mountains, Into a Wider World
I often read about children living in the mountains of China. They don't have enough learning resources, especially for English. I believe English is not just a language—it also gives people the chance to see the world differently. So I started thinking about what I could do for these children.
Then, I came up with an idea: to make special English learning materials! More than 10 classmates joined me, and we started a club called "Out of Mountains".
Our English materials have three parts: listening, reading and writing. We decided to publish them every month and send them to children by email. We also built a website so children could get information more easily. Each of us worked on one part, such as writing content, designing layouts, making illustrations and developing the website. To make the learning process more fun, we chose interesting topics for kids, like holidays.
The hardest part was finding the children. I contacted schools in Liangshan, Sichuan. I also reached out to children through some WeChat official accounts. I felt nervous talking to them and was afraid of being turned down, but I did my best to share our ideas.
In the end, we got the readers we had hoped for. Every time a parent emailed us saying, "My child really liked the story.", it gave us the strength to keep going. I hope our small acts can help give these kids a better future.
1. "I often read about children living in the mountains of China. They don't have enough learning resources, especially for English."

4. "Every time a parent emailed us saying, 'My child really liked the story.', it gave us the strength to keep going."

Finish What You Start
Derek Redmond
It was the Olympic Games in Barcelona in 1992, the semi-final of the 400 metres. The sun was shining and the crowd were ready for a great race. The British athlete Derek Redmond was a top runner: he had a very good chance of winning a medal. The race began. At first, Derek was running well. Then, after about 150 metres, he felt a pain in his leg. He fell down on one knee. He had a bad injury and couldn't carry on. The other runners went past him and finished the race. After about five seconds, Derek got up and started to run again, on one leg only. Some organizers tried to stop him but he kept going. The crowd stood up and started to clap. Then another man came onto the track—Derek's father, Jim. His father put his arm around him and said, "Derek, you don't have to do this." Derek replied, "Yes, I do. I have to finish." And so together they walked the last 50 metres and crossed the line. When he finally crossed the line, Derek was crying and 60,000 people were cheering him.
Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner
In the summer of 2010, mountaineer Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner was almost at the top of a mountain called K2 in Nepal. She was trying to climb the 8,611-metre mountain for the fifth time and this time she was climbing with her friend Fredrik Ericsson. It was about 7 o'clock in the morning and it was snowing a little. The two climbers were getting ready to go up the last 400 metres. Fredrik was trying to tie some rope but he slipped and fell past Gerlinde. He fell 1,000 metres and was killed.K2 was now a very sad place for her, and she thought perhaps she would never climb the mountain. But there was something very important that she wanted to do: K2 is one of 14 mountains in the world that are 8,000 metres or higher, and her dream was to climb them all.So in August 2011 she went back to Nepal and K2, and tried again. This time, she got to the top. Her dream was complete.

Passage1

In 2015, Paulsen found a small lump(肿块) on his neck and paid little attention to it at first. Doctors soon examined him and gave him a shocking result, a serious throat illness in a late stage. For a voice actor, this was a cruel hit, since his voice mattered a lot to his career.

Passage3
(25-26扬州期末)Nan Rendong, the chief scientist and engineer of China's Five-hundred-metre Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST), was a pioneer in the field of astronomical research(天文研究)in China. He spent more than 20 years on the project, which made it one of the world's most powerful radio telescopes that can watch the universe in detail.
Born in 1945, Nan studied Physics at university and later went abroad for further education. However, when he learned that China planned to build a large radio telescope, he gave up his comfortable overseas life and returned to his motherland. His goal was clear-to build a telescope that could help humans explore the mysteries of the universe, from distant galaxies to the birth of stars.
The construction of FAST was extremely challenging. The chosen site was a remote valley in Guizhou Province where there were no roads or modern facilities in the beginning. Nan led his team to climb mountains and cross rivers to carry out surveys, and they solved dozens of technical problems during the process. In 2016, FAST was finally completed. It is about 30 times more sensitive than the second-largest radio telescope in the world and can pick up radio signals from billions of light years away, which means it can "hear" sounds that no other telescope has ever detected.
Sadly, Nan passed away in 2017 due to illness and did not live long enough to see all the achievements of FAST. However, his contribution has been deeply remembered. The international astronomical community named an asteroid(小行星)after him in honour of his great work.
Today, FAST continues to run well. It helps scientists discover new pulsars(脉冲星) and study the origin of the universe. It stands as a shining symbol of Chinese wisdom and innovation, and a lasting honour to Nan's lifelong devotion to science.
1. Why did Nan Rendong decide to return to China according to the passage?
A. He found himself unable to get used to life abroad.
B. He was offered a high-paying position in his motherland.
C. He wanted to solve technical problems for an international programme.
D. He aimed to join in the construction of China's large radio telescope.
2. Which of the following is TRUE about the construction of FAST?
A. The project was finished in 2017.
B. The chosen site in Guizhou had no roads or modern facilities in the beginning.
C. The team failed to carry out any surveys during the process.
D. FAST is 30 times larger than the world's second-largest radio telescope.
3. What can we infer from the passage?
A. FAST is the only powerful radio telescope in the world.
B. The project was completed within 20 years.
C. Nan Rendong's hard work played a key role in FAST's success.
D. FAST helps scientists discover an asteroid named after Nan Rendong.
4. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To explain the scientific rules behind FAST's design.
B. To introduce the location and construction process of FAST.

Passage5
Many young people today don't want to be noticed by others. Why do they feel this way? Three students share their opinions in the posts.
He Yan,15,China
I think there are two main reasons. First, students face heavy stress from schoolwork and future expectations. Being noticed often brings more pressure. Second, young people want to protect their privacy. The internet makes it easy for personal information to spread quickly, so staying low-key helps avoid unnecessary trouble.
I sometimes feel the same way. When I perform poorly in exams, I prefer to stay unnoticed, which helps me relax and feel more comfortable.
Ivana Sens,16,Germany
I am quite different, though. I enjoy being noticed, especially when I'm doing something I love. But this is not common in my country. Being quiet is not a weakness in Germany. Students who listen carefully and don't try to stand out are often seen as serious and reliable. That's why many young people here avoid attention.
Once, my history teacher asked me to present my project. Feeling uncomfortable, I spoke quickly and avoided eye contact. When I finished, I felt much better. It wasn't fear-it was just the pressure of being watched. This comes from our culture and habit. In Germany, we value order, teamwork and modesty. For me, confidence means being calm and thoughtful, even without attention.
1. According to He Yan, why do young people avoid attention?
A. They don't like to communicate with others.
B. They are afraid of making mistakes in public.
C. They prefer to spend more time on the internet.
D. They want to prevent trouble and reduce stress.
2. How is Ivana different from her classmates?
A. She enjoys being the centre of attention sometimes.
B. She feels more stress from schoolwork than others.
C. She has a real gift for languages and stage designs.
D. She thinks social media makes people more confident.
3. How did Ivana feel when presenting her project in class?
A. She felt excited to speak up.
B. She was afraid of her teacher.
C. She felt uneasy and nervous.
D. She was excited and confident.
4. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Why young people feel stressed at school.
B. Why some young people avoid being noticed.
C. How social media influences young people's lives.
D. How different cultures shape young people's habits.
Passage6
(25-26无锡江阴期末)Have you ever really loved a TV show? I mean the kind you think about all day and can't wait to discuss with your friends. Especially when an episode(集) ends with an unsolved situation that makes you really want to know what happens next—but when will the next episode be?
This wanting often leads to binge-watching(追剧). Thanks to developments in internet speed and technology, streaming(流媒体) services now allow us to watch the whole seasons of our favourite shows whenever we want. This has made binge-watching very common among young people.
However, recent research from a British media watchdog has found that of the more than half of British adults who watch more than one episode of a show back-to-back, almost a third have admitted missing sleep or becoming tired as a result; and one quarter have put off their homework. Next we'll be missing work! Teachers are now worried that students might fail to complete homework for the same reason.
▲ All of these are often connected to a shortage of self-control and may develop into bad habits. Many people find binge-watching difficult to stop once they start. Some students report that it has made them unable to focus on studying. This raises an important question: could binge-watching become a new form of addiction?
Plenty of information and entertainment that television and online media can bring us is, many would say, a good thing. However, like any activity, when we go too far, it can be dangerous. It becomes especially worrying when it begins to influence our sleep, schoolwork, or personal relationships.
So what's the solution? Moderation! Learning to manage our screen time wisely requires us to set clear rules-for example, by deciding on a viewing timetable beforehand-while also exploring other relaxing activities, such as reading, doing sports, or socializing with friends. Remember the old saying, "A little of what you enjoy does you good."
1. What can we learn about binge-watching?
A. It encourages students to finish their homework on time.
B. It is becoming less common because of new technology.
C. It may lead to sleep loss and less time for important tasks.
D. It helps build closer friendship through shared TV interests.
2. Why did the writer mention a research from a British media watchdog in Paragraph 3?
A. To prove that binge-watching can be harmful.
B. To show how popular binge-watching is among adults.
C. To introduce the main contents of TV shows in Britain.
D. To explain why streaming services have become so popular.
3. Which sentence can be put in the ▲ in Paragraph 4?
A. Why should people stop binge-watching?
B. What are the main reasons for binge-watching?
C. Binge-watching stops us better understanding the world.
D. Binge-watching is similar to harmful habits like binge-eating.
4. What's the passage mainly about?
A. Binge-watching is popular but should be controlled wisely.
B. Streaming services bring enjoyment as well as self-control problems.
C. Binge-watching has become an addiction that influences our daily lives.
D. People should manage their screen time and find other relaxing activities instead.

Passage1
(25-26扬州期末)Many teenagers in the US know the voices of Yakko from Animaniacs and Pinky from Pinky and the Brain, two famous cartoon characters. Yet few know the man behind these beloved characters-Rob Paulsen, a voice actor.
In 2015, Paulsen found a small lump(肿块) on his neck and paid little attention to it at first. Doctors soon examined him and gave him a shocking result, a serious throat illness in a late stage. For a voice actor, this was a cruel hit, since his voice mattered a lot to his career.
Paulsen went through months of hard medical treatment. He felt tired out all the time, his mouth stayed dry, and food had no taste at all. Worst of all, his voice was hurt, and he worried that he could never work as a voice actor again. However, he went through the pain and gradually became better.
His life changed greatly. He could no longer enjoy spicy food, lost weight, and his hair turned white. But he also gained something more valuable-empathy(同理心). He now truly understands the struggles of people fighting illness, and can sincerely say "I get it" to sick children and other patients.

D 2. A 3. C 4. B

C 2. A 3. D 4. A
第三段提到“almost a third have admitted missing sleep... and one quarter have put off their homework”,即导致睡眠不足和耽误重要任务。故选 C。
故选 A。
第四段空后提到“All of these are often connected to a shortage of self-control and may develop into bad habits”,前文应引入“类似不良习惯”的类比,D 项“Binge-watching is similar to harmful habits like binge-eating”最恰当。故选 D。
故选 A。
