Thanks to technology, the way we communicate with others has greatly changed. How do you feel about it? Would you prefer to live in a world with or without mobile phones?
I ordered some snacks on my phone the other afternoon. Once I got home from work that evening, I saw they were already at my door. So prompt! Have you ever thought about how people in the past communicated and did things without mobile phones? Take the post for example (拿邮递举个例子). Before phones, if you wanted to keep in touch with someone far away, you needed to send them a letter in the mail. When my mum was in primary school, she used to do this with her “pen pal”. A pen pal is a name for a person you keep in touch with mainly through postal mail. My mum would write to her pen pal every few months, and then, after a little while, her pen pal would write back. Later, once email became a common thing, sending letters by post felt so slow to people. It became known as “snail mail”!
What if you were at an airport in the time before mobile phones? My dad said that in the 1970s, there used to be message boards at some airports. If you needed to exit (离开) the airport and wanted to leave a message for a friend who would be arriving later, you could write them a message and stick it on the message board. Then, your friend could check the board later and see what you wrote to them!

My name is Li Liang. I grew up in a small village far from the town. Our village was surrounded by mountains, and a wide river ran between our village and my school. Thirty years ago, my friends and I had to cross this river to get to school. There was no bridge at that time, so we used a simple and narrow ropeway to go across the river. We held on to the rope tightly and pulled ourselves over the rushing water below. It was tiring and scary, but we had no other choice.
Thanks to the local government, the villagers’ dream has come true. There is a wide bridge over the river now. Moreover, the villagers now live in new buildings and work in factories in the town.
As for me, with the love and encouragement from kind people, I have had no fear on the way to my dream. Last year, I graduated from university. To answer the call of rural revitalization (乡村振兴), I chose to work as an engineer to help build my hometown along with some of my friends. In fact, thanks to the Chinese Dream, great changes have taken place all over China in the past few years. China has also made a lot of achievements such as 5G, high-speed railways, and the Beidou Navigation System.
Now our government is carrying out a lot of projects, such as urban-rural integration (城乡融合发展) and ecological tourism, to increase people’s income and improve their quality of life. More and more people are willing to return to their hometowns to do some meaningful things.
Where there are dreams, efforts and unity, there is a way. I believe that Chinese people will continue to pull together and work hard to achieve more in the future.

Under the hot sun, a young girl jumped onto a tractor and started it. As it moved across the farmland, the dry ground was turned soft and ready for planting. She is Shen Yanfen, a post-90s new farmer.
Born in Guangzhou, Shen studied modern business management at university and once worked in Shenzhen. In 2020, she returned to her hometown because of her father. “My father was getting older. He hoped I could make his cooperative (合作社) stronger to help with farming,” she said.
At first, Shen’s new job was difficult. Local cooperative farmers didn’t think a girl from the city could farm. To make them believe in her, Shen learnt to operate the farm machines and took many farming courses. After a year, she became one of the first women to drive farm machines in her hometown.
While working, Shen noticed traditional farm work was slow. She wanted to make it modern, so she brought in new machines. She also trained a group of young people to use them. Later, her cooperative used machines for all farm work.
To make the farm work much more efficient, she brought five local cooperatives together and set up Guangzhou’s first agricultural machinery cooperative union. After about two years, it grew to eight members. With the union, farm teams worked together and were able to do bigger tasks in a shorter time. Under the leadership of Shen, the union made about 3,000 mu of wasteland good for farming.
But Shen didn’t stop there. In 2023, Shen built a rice brand with her team to sell their rice. They shared it on TV and online platforms. Hawking is considered by many to be the greatest scientist in history since Albert Einstein. He came up with the theory that the universe began with the Big Bang and will end in black holes.
His theory became the important base for a lot of later research. He also wrote books to help common people understand the universe. His most famous book is A Brief History of Time (《时间简史》), which has sold more than 10 million copies around the world, according to CNN.
Besides his scientific achievements, Hawking was also someone who had a strong will and positive attitude.

The Man Who Built a “Big Eye” in the Mountains
In a quiet valley in Guizhou, there is a huge “eye” looking up at the sky. It is FAST, the world’s largest radio telescope. The man behind it was Nan Rendong.
Nan Rendong was born in 1945. As a young scientist, he worked in Beijing. In 1994, he had an idea: China should build its own large radio telescope. Many people thought it was impossible—it would cost a lot of money and take many years.
Nan did not give up. To find the best place for the telescope, he travelled across the mountains of Guizhou for twelve years. He walked through deep valleys and climbed over high hills, often sleeping in small village houses. ▲ He read maps, visited villages and talked with local people until he finally found a bowl-shaped valley in Pingtang.
Building FAST was even harder. Nan worked day and night with his team. He was already over sixty, but he still climbed the mountain to check every part of the project. In 2016, FAST was finished. Sadly, Nan Rendong died of illness in 2017, only one year after his dream came true.

The Postman of Long Valley
Uncle Zhou has been a postman in Long Valley for thirty years. Every morning at six, he puts on his green bag and sets off on his old motorbike. The road winds through two mountains and a river, and it takes him nearly four hours to finish one round.
I grew up in Long Valley. When I was nine, I loved stories, but there was no bookshop in our village, and the school had only a few old books. One rainy afternoon, Uncle Zhou knocked on our door. “A parcel for you,” he said, and handed me a package. Inside were two storybooks. Later, my mother told me that Uncle Zhou had bought them with his own money after he heard me say I had nothing to read.
From then on, a new parcel came almost every month—books about animals, about the sea, and about people who made a difference. Uncle Zhou never said much. Once I asked him why he did this. He just smiled. “A letter brings news,” he said, “but a book brings a road.”
Last year, I left Long Valley to study in the city. On the day I left, Uncle Zhou was at the bus stop as usual, his green bag on his shoulder. He handed me a book and said, “Read it when you miss home.”

Unit 3学习方法和策略
01
Tom was a slow reader. Words seemed to jump on the page, and he often lost his place. His reading teacher, Mrs Green, suggested a method called “chunking” — reading groups of words together instead of one word at a time.
At first Tom thought it wouldn’t work. But Mrs Green gave him short passages and asked him to mark natural word groups with a pencil. “Read them as phrases, not letters,” she said. Tom practised for ten minutes every day after school.
After two months, his reading speed doubled. More importantly, he understood more because his brain wasn’t busy decoding (解码) single letters. “I actually enjoy reading now,” Tom told his mum.
Mrs Green explained, “Many students read slowly simply because they try to say every sound. Chunking trains your eyes to take in more at a glance.” She added that this skill also helps with memory and focus.
1.What problem did Tom have at first?
A.He couldn’t remember new words.
B.He disliked all kinds of books.
C.He read slowly and lost his place easily.
D.He had trouble writing compositions.

D.Memorizing whole passages by heart.
3.How long did Tom practise every day?
A.Ten minutes. B.Five minutes. C.Half an hour. D.One hour.
4.Why did chunking help Tom understand more?

C.Because he read aloud all the time.
D.Because he used a dictionary for every word.
5.What’s the best title for the passage?
A.A Great Teacher’s Life
B.How Chunking Changed a Slow Reader
C.The Importance of Writing Diaries

What makes a good learner? Good learners are not always those who get the highest scores. Instead, they have useful learning habits and active learning skills.
Good learners often think actively. They do not just wait for teachers to give answers. When they read textbooks, they note down important points and raise questions. For example, if they cannot understand a grammar rule, they will mark it and try to find answers in books or ask classmates for help. They also know how to make good use of time. They make small daily learning plans instead of cramming all work before tests.
Besides, good learners are not afraid of mistakes. Mistakes are valuable for study. When they make mistakes in exercises, they will analyze why they go wrong and correct them in time. They will review these wrong points regularly. Some students hate making mistakes and avoid difficult tasks. In fact, this will slow down their progress.
Good learners also know to reflect on their learning. Every week, they will think about what they have learned and what they still need to improve. Active learning does not mean studying day and night, but learning in smart ways.
1.What is the main idea of Paragraph 2?
A.How to get high scores in exams.
B.Good learners think actively and manage time well.
C.Ways to ask teachers for help.
D.How to take notes in class.
2.The underlined word “cramming” in paragraph 2 probably means ________.
A.临时突击 B.反复复习 C.认真预习 D.整理笔记

C.We should avoid making any mistakes.
D.Mistakes can bring higher scores directly.
4.Which of the following is TRUE about good learners?
A.They only wait for teachers’ answers.
B.They never make mistakes in study.
C.They will reflect on their learning from time to time.
D.They keep studying without any rest all day.
5.What is the best title for this passage?
A.How to avoid study mistakes. B.How to finish homework quickly.
C.The importance of high marks. D.What makes a good learner.
03
Active learning plays an important role in our school life. Many students believe learning is just listening to teachers and memorizing knowledge. However, active learning requires more than that. It pushes students to take part in learning activities, discuss problems with partners and think over knowledge by themselves.
Group discussion is one common active‑learning way. When students work in groups, they share different ideas. One student may have trouble understanding a passage, while group partners can offer new explanations. Through talking with each other, students can see problems from more sides. But group work does not mean chatting freely. Everyone should focus on the learning task.
Taking notes is also a helpful skill for active learners. It is not copying every word teachers say. Smart learners select key information, write down their own thoughts and mark confusing parts. These notes become helpful materials for later review.
Another useful strategy is self‑questioning. After reading a text, you may ask yourself: What is the main idea? What do I still not understand? These questions guide you to check your learning results.
No one becomes a good learner overnight. If you keep practicing these active‑learning skills little by little, you will gradually improve your study.
1.What does active learning require?
A.Only listen and memorize what teachers say
B.Finish homework as fast as possible
C.Take part in activities and think on our own
D.Get high scores in every test
2.What benefit can group discussion bring us?
A.We can chat with classmates for fun.
B.We can see problems from different sides.
C.We don’t need to think by ourselves.
D.We can finish homework without effort.
3.What is smart note‑taking according to the text?
A.Copy all the words from teachers
B.Copy answers from classmates
C.Write down nothing in class
D.Write down key points and your own ideas
4.What does “self‑questioning” mean in the passage?
A.Ask others lots of difficult questions
B.Question everything your teacher tells you
C.Check your own learning by asking yourself questions
D.Give up when you meet hard questions
5.What can we learn from the text?
A.Good learners form good learning habits step by step
B.Group work always helps everyone get good grades
C.Memorizing is the only way for learning
D.We should never ask ourselves questions
04
Do you ever feel like your study habits just don’t work? Do you wonder what you could do to do better in class or in exams? Then maybe you need to study smarter, not harder. Here are some useful tips for you.
Reading is not studying. Simply reading texts or notes can’t help us understand knowledge deeply. Real studying is making meaning from the text. This includes making connections to lessons, giving examples and planning your own learning. All of the work will help you to really study for your lessons.
It’s good to be intensive (集中的). You will achieve more if you study intensively.Intensive study times are short and allow you to get work done fast. Shorter, intensive study times are more useful than drawn-out studying. In fact, one of the best study methods is to break up your study time into different parts. Intensive study times can last 30 or 45 minutes. And then take a break. This way, you will better remember the information.
Silence isn’t always golden. Know where you study the best. The library may not be the best place for you. It’s important to consider what environment works the best for you. You might find that you focus better with some sound. Some people find that listening to classical music while studying helps them study, while others find this is bad for them. The point is that the silence of the library may be just as bad as (or worse than) the noise of a sports centre.
1.Why does the writer ask two questions in Paragraph 1?
A.To compare different study habits.
B.To introduce the topic of the passage.
C.To help find out your learning problems.
D.To make the readers interested in the topic.
2.What’s real studying from the passage?
A.Planning study time. B.Reading notes again.
C.Reading texts simply. D.Making meaning from texts.
3.What does the underlined word “drawn-out” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Long. B.Easy. C.Fast. D.Active.
4.What is the writer’s opinion on studying in silence?

Putting things off is something a lot of students are troubled with. Between schoolwork, after-school activities and everyday worries, there are too many things you have to deal with every day. But if you keep putting them off, they can snowball. You might start falling behind and your grades might get lower. In fact, almost every student faces this problem at some point.
One smart way to fight back is to break big tasks into little pieces. Huge projects can feel like a mountain. But if you cut them into smaller steps, it will make it less scary. For example, you’ve got to write a five-page paper. Just tell yourself, “Today, I’ll choose my topic and write a little. I’ll take care of more tomorrow.” Step by step, it gets done.
The “work and rest” way is also a smart choice for being efficient. Set a clock for 25 minutes—go all in, full attention. Then take a five-minute break. Have some cookies. Walk around. Once you get going, it’s easier to keep it up.
▲ Put away your phones and any kind of toys. Find a quiet place to avoid getting interrupted (打扰). The less noise, the better your mind can pay attention.
And don’t forget to treat yourself. For example, listen to your favourite song, or watch an interesting TV program. These little things keep you going. Change doesn’t happen in a short time, so stick to it every day. Finally, with effort, you are sure to see improvements.
1.What may happen if students keep putting off their tasks?
A.They will have more free time. B.They will fall behind and get lower grades.

The “Memory Palace” Trick
People in ancient Greece used a smart trick to remember long speeches: the memory palace.
Here is how it works. Imagine a house you know well—your home. Then put each thing you want to remember in a different place: the key on the sofa, the word list on the fridge, the date on the wall clock. When you need to recall them, just “walk” through your house in your mind.
Amazing fact: Your brain is better at remembering places than plain words. That is why this method still helps students today.
Challenge:
① Choose 10 English words.
② Place each word in a room of your “palace”.
③ Close your eyes and walk through it.
④ Write down how many you remember.
Try it further: The next time you prepare for an exam, build a new memory palace—maybe your school, your grandparents’ yard, or even a zoo in your head.
1.How does the writer introduce the memory palace?
A.By telling a personal story.
B.By explaining the steps clearly.
C.By arguing against old methods.
D.By interviewing famous scientists.
2.Why is the memory palace useful according to the text?
A.Because the brain remembers places better than plain words.
B.Because it needs no practice at all.
C.Because it only works for maths.
D.Because it replaces sleep.
3.What is the purpose of “Challenge” in the text?
A.To test readers’ writing speed.
B.To let readers practise the method at once.
C.To teach readers how to build a house.
D.To show that memory cannot be trained.
02
Do you often forget what you have studied, or walk into a room and forget why you went there? You are not alone. Our brains are not designed to remember everything, but the good news is that memory can be trained. In fact, many people have improved their memory with simple methods.
Take Li Wei, a 16-year-old student from Shanghai, for example. He used to be very forgetful. He often forgot to bring his homework, and he could not remember English words for more than two days. He felt upset and believed he had a “bad memory”. His grades were dropping because of his poor memory. One day, he read about a memory winner. The winner said that anyone could improve their memory with the right training.
Li Wei decided to give it a try. First, he learned to associate new information with something he already knew. For example, to remember the word “memorize”, he connected it with “memory”. This technique is called word association. This method was so useful that he could remember 30 new English words a week. He also started using spaced repetition (重复). Instead of repeating a word 20 times in one sitting, he reviewed it after one day, then three days, then one week.
After two months, his memory improved greatly. He never forgot his homework again. He also encouraged his classmates to join him. Now, Li Wei wants to share his method with others. He is starting a “Memory Training Group” at his school. The group meets twice a week. Members take short memory tests and share their own tips.
1.What problem did Li Wei have before he trained his memory?
A.He often missed school. B.He had no friends.
C.He hated studying. D.He could not remember English words.
2.What does the underlined word “associate” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Forget. B.Connect.
C.Repeat. D.Write.
3.Why did Li Wei use spaced repetition?
A.To learn more words in one night. B.To remember words without studying.
C.To remember words longer. D.To make words more difficult.

① Li Wei shared his method and started a memory training group.
② Li Wei was very forgetful and couldn’t remember English words.
③ Li Wei learned word association and spaced repetition to improve his memory.
④ Li Wei read something about a memory winner.
A.④→②→③→① B.②→④→③→①
C.②→①→④→③ D.③→④→①→②
5.What is the best title for the passage?
A.A Forgetful Student. B.How to Train Your Memory.
C.The Importance of Sleep. D.Li Wei’s School Life.
03
Most people hope to have a good memory which helps them succeed in study, work and life. Can memory be improved? Luckily, hundreds of studies in the past 50 years have already given us a definite (确定的) answer.
★. First of all, it is necessary to have a healthy eating habit. Eating more food rich in Vitamin B and Vitamin E helps you have a better memory. Doing exercise can keep your brain alive, too. Proper exercise provides much needed oxygen (氧气) for the brain. Running, riding a bike, swimming and even walking two or three times a week are helpful. Moreover, getting enough sleep is important. Only when your brain gets a good rest, can it work well. The healthier your lifestyle is, the better your memory will become.
Memory skills help you remember things better. Chunking is a way of remembering a piece of information by cutting it into smaller ones. For example, to memorize a ten-digit (数字) telephone number 2127983630, you can divide the digits into three groups: first 212, then 798, and last 3630. This method is far more effective than remembering a string (字符串) of 10 digits. However, memory skills will hardly work if you don’t understand the information. What’s more, only a regular review can make the memory last long. That is why students are always advised to go over what they have learned after one day and then after three days, and then use it as often as possible.
Human brains are like muscles that need nutrition (营养) and exercise to become stronger. If you make a few lifestyle changes and try some memory skills, you can certainly improve your memory.
1.How many ways of keeping a healthy lifestyle are mentioned in the passage?
A.Two. B.Three. C.Four. D.Five.
2.Which of the following can be put in ★?
A.Getting enough sleep is important.
B.Human brains don’t need nutrition or exercise.
C.A healthy lifestyle keeps your brain memory active.
D.Memory skills are helpful for you to remember things.
3.Which of the following patterns best shows the “chunking” way to memorize the telephone number 3147983689?
A.3147983689. B.314 | 798 | 3689. C.3147 | 9836 | 89. D.314798 | 3689.
4.Why should we review what we’ve learned regularly?
A.To make the memory last long.
B.To show that we are hard-working.
C.To follow our teachers’ advice.
D.To do homework right and finish it early.
5.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Not everyone has a good memory.
B.Memory can be improved in some ways.
C.Memory skills are not difficult to learn.
D.It’s important to have a healthy lifestyle.

On Monday, I stopped my car in front of my daughter Juliet’s middle school. She jumped in the front seat, feeling down. She asked me to help her study for her science test.
“Dad, I need to memorize a unit about the Reproductive Cycle of Plants. And I can hardly make it.”
“You know, memorizing seems like the best way to study, but in fact you can do better in tests if you work on trying to understand the material.”
Juliet was open to my advice. It was Monday afternoon and we had two nights to study before the test on Wednesday. I suggested a plan. “Tomorrow night, you are going to teach the material to me. Tonight, read the unit. Prepare to teach.”
Asking her to teach me was an unusual idea but I decided to do it. Studies show teaching somebody else is a very useful way to learn. Even if you don’t do the teaching, the act of preparing to teach leads to more learning than just trying your best to memorize the material.
On Tuesday afternoon, Juliet sat down with her science book facing me and said, “Okay, Dad, let’s study.” I wanted her to teach me. But false starts happened. I couldn’t be too hard on her. So instead, we started with me asking her some simple questions. She knew some but not others. When she didn’t know the answers, I encouraged her to check the book.
She started checking things that didn’t make sense. And she was actively trying to test her understanding. I was happy to see it. She wasn’t memorizing. She was trying to make sense of things, which was exactly what I had hoped she would do.
1.Why did Juliet feel down?
A.Because she failed her science test.
B.Because she knew nothing about plants.
C.Because she couldn’t follow her teacher.
D.Because she had trouble memorizing a unit.
2.In the writer’s opinion, which is the key to the best learning for Juliet?
A.Memorizing. B.Testing. C.Questioning. D.Understanding.
3.What does the underlined phrase “make sense” probably mean in the last paragraph?
A.Be interesting. B.Be clear. C.Be stupid. D.Be typical.
4.What can we know from the passage?
A.The father was too hard on his daughter.
B.The daughter understood the unit at last.
C.The father gave up letting his daughter teach him.
D.The daughter finally learned the unit by memorizing.
5.What’s the best title for the passage?
A.A Creative Father B.An Unexpected Test
C.Learning from Teaching D.Preparing for Teaching

Do you think you have a good memory? It is difficult to say exactly what memory is. Even scientists who have been studying memory for many years say that they are still trying to find out what it is. We do know that memory is not just one thing stored (存储) somewhere in the brain. Memory is made up of small pieces of information stored all over the brain.
The human brain is very small and light. But it needs about 20% of the oxygen that our body takes in. We can’t think well if our brain isn’t getting enough oxygen, so always make sure there is enough oxygen in the air when you need to learn or remember something!
Why do you forget things sometimes? The main reason for forgetting something is that you did not learn it well enough in the beginning. For example, if you meet some new people and right away forget their names, it is because you didn’t record the names when you heard them.
No one can remember everything, but everyone can learn how to improve their memory. Here are some ways:
·When you want to remember something, tell a friend about it. This way the new information becomes more memorable. Later on, think about the conversation with your friend. It will help you remember the information.
·Don’t over-train your brain. When you’ve remembered a list of new vocabulary, stop studying. It’s better to study a lot of material for a short time than a small part of material for a lot of time! But remember: you do have to practise your new vocabulary as soon as possible!
·If you want to remember big things, break them down into smaller parts. It’s easier to remember 764598304126 if you break it into four smaller bits: 764-598-304-126.
·If you want to remember a piece of information, but you can’t, don’t get angry. Relax when you study! Try to enjoy yourself. You are learning new things every minute. You will remember better if you are happy and relaxed.
In short, none of the ways can make your memory 100% perfect, but all of them are helpful.
1.Where is memory stored in your brain?
A.In the left brain. B.All over the brain.
C.In the right brain. D.Some parts of the brain.
2.What can you do to improve your memory according to the passage?
①Be relaxed when you study.
②Over-train your brain.
③Break the things down into smaller parts.
④Talk with your friends about the things you want to remember.

3.According to the passage, the writer probably agrees with ________.
A.learning at least 100 new words at a time
B.remembering long numbers by writing
C.getting angry when you can’t remember some information
D.getting enough oxygen when you remember things

1.What does the underlined word “prompt” mean in Paragraph 2?
A.Wise. B.Polite. C.Quick. D.Helpful.
2.How did the writer’s mum keep in touch with her pen pal?
A.By talking on phones. B.By mailing letters.
C. By visiting every few months. D.By writing diaries.
3.Where could people leave messages at some airports in the 1970s?
A.On the message boards. B.At the information desk.
C.On the door of the exit. D.On the boarding gate of the plane.
4.What is the story mainly about?
A.How fast it is to buy things nowadays.
B.How people kept in touch before.
C.The importance of communication.
D.Ways of making friends in the past.

On March 14 in 2018, one of science’s brightest stars went dark. Stephen Hawking, the world-famous British scientist, died at 76 in Cambridge, UK.
When Hawking was 21, he was told that he had a serious illness that stopped him from walking and talking. Later in life, he had to sit in a wheelchair and “speak” using a computerized voice. But this didn’t stop him from living a meaningful and colorful life. “If one is physically disabled, one cannot afford to be psychologically disabled as well.” he once said.
Hawking travelled around the world to attend science meetings, visiting every continent, including Antarctica. He was also a fan of popular culture and appeared on TV shows such as Star Trek and The Big Bang Theory.
He celebrated his 60th birthday by going up in a hot-air balloon. When he was 65, he took part in a zero-gravity flight to experience weightlessness. He hoped to travel into space one day.

2.What does “chunking” mean in the passage?
A.Reading word by word carefully.
B.Reading groups of words together.
C.Listening to audio books.
D.Memorizing whole passages by heart.
3.How long did Tom practise every day?
A.Ten minutes. B.Five minutes. C.Half an hour. D.One hour.
4.Why did chunking help Tom understand more?
A.Because his brain focused on meaning, not single letters.
B.Because his teacher gave him easier books.
C.Because he read aloud all the time.
D.Because he used a dictionary for every word.
5.What’s the best title for the passage?
A.A Great Teacher’s Life
B.How Chunking Changed a Slow Reader
C.The Importance of Writing Diaries
D.Why Reading Is Boring
【答案】1.C 2.B 3.A 4.A 5.B

A.Copy all the words from teachers
B.Copy answers from classmates
C.Write down nothing in class
D.Write down key points and your own ideas

A.Ask others lots of difficult questions
B.Question everything your teacher tells you
C.Check your own learning by asking yourself questions
D.Give up when you meet hard questions
5.What can we learn from the text?
A.Good learners form good learning habits step by step

【答案】1.B 2.A 3.B

4.What is the correct order of the passage?
① Li Wei shared his method and started a memory training group.
② Li Wei was very forgetful and couldn’t remember English words.
③ Li Wei learned word association and spaced repetition to improve his memory.
④ Li Wei read something about a memory winner.
A.④→②→③→① B.②→④→③→①
C.②→①→④→③ D.③→④→①→②
5.What is the best title for the passage?
A.A Forgetful Student. B.How to Train Your Memory.
C.The Importance of Sleep. D.Li Wei’s School Life.

1.根据第一段第二句“She jumped in the front seat, feeling down.”以及第二段中Juliet所说的话“‘Dad, I need to memorize a unit about the Reproductive Cycle of Plants. And I can hardly make it.’”可知,Juliet感到沮丧的原因是她需要背诵关于植物繁殖周期的单元,但自己几乎背不下来,即在识记该单元知识时遇到了困难。
2.第三段中父亲对Juliet建议道:“‘You know, memorizing seems like the best way to study, but in fact you can do better in tests if you work on trying to understand the material.’”,说明在作者看来,死记硬背并非良策,深入去理解学习材料才是取得优异成绩的关键。
3.根据第六段末句“When she didn’t know the answers, I encouraged her to check the book.”以及第七段后文“And she was actively trying to test her understanding…She wasn’t memorizing. She was trying to make sense of things…”可知,在父亲的鼓励下,Juliet开始翻书查阅那些她先前不会、尚未明白的内容,从而检验自己的理解程度。由此结合上下文语境推断,画线短语“make sense”在此处指知识点“清楚明白/通俗易懂”。
4.根据第七段中“And she was actively trying to test her understanding…She wasn’t memorizing. She was trying to make sense of things, which was exactly what I had hoped she would do.”

A.①②③ B.②③④ C.①③④ D.①②④
3.According to the passage, the writer probably agrees with ________.
A.learning at least 100 new words at a time
B.remembering long numbers by writing
C.getting angry when you can’t remember some information
D.getting enough oxygen when you remember things
4.What does the writer mainly talk about in the passage?
A.What the human brain is and where the memory is stored.
B.When we think well and how we remember everything.
C.Why we forget something and how we improve our memory.
D.What memory is made up of and who can have a good memory.
【答案】1.B 2.C 3.D 4.C
【导语】本文介绍了记忆的存储位置、大脑需氧量、遗忘原因及提高记忆力的方法。
【详解】
1.第一段指出“Memory is made up of small pieces of information stored all over the brain.”,说明记忆储存在大脑各处。
2.第四段指出“No one can remember everything, but everyone can learn how to improve their memory. Here are some ways:”,随后列举了具体方法,包括“tell a friend about it”(④)、“Don’t over-train your brain”(②)、“break them down into smaller parts”(③)以及“Relax when you study”(①)。其中②与文中“Don’t over-train your brain.”矛盾,因此①③④正确。
3.第二段指出“always make sure there is enough oxygen in the air when you need to learn or remember something!”,说明作者同意记忆时确保足够的氧气。
4.第四段指出“No one can remember everything, but everyone can learn how to improve their memory.”,结合全文对遗忘原因和提高记忆方法的介绍,说明文章主要探讨遗忘原因及提高记忆力的方法。
