(本题10分)In the early days of motherhood, I felt lonely. I had left a good job to take care of my six-month-old son. Although I loved being with him, I missed talking to other adults and wanted to hear news from outside. I knew I needed to make friends with other mothers — but I didn’t know how.
I often took my son, Ethan, to the grocery store, which wasn’t a good place to make friends. He enjoyed smiling at people and looking at colorful displays, but I needed more. “We have to find something better to do,” I thought.
Then one day, my husband suggested going to the library. I loved reading but hadn’t had much time since Ethan was born. Maybe a good book could cheer me up.
While at the library, I discovered the children’s area. There was a schedule of activities for children, including a playgroup for babies and toddlers I wasn’t sure if I would know anyone, but I decided to give it a try.
The next week, Ethan and I went to the playgroup. I was nervous at first. Luckily, a friendly woman named Misty welcomed us. She introduced me to other moms, and we started talking about our children — their development, favorite foods, and sleep habits. I left feeling happy and hopeful about making new friends.
After that, Ethan and I seldom missed a playgroup. As he grew older, we joined more activities like “Tot Time” and “Story Time.” Later, when his younger sister and brother were born, our schedule became even busier. Together, we learned about gardening, met animals from the local zoo, and played educational games. Most importantly, we all made new friends.
I’m thankful for the moms I met at the library. We have similar backgrounds and children around the same age, so we can support and advise each other. When the children were younger, we met at different parks during summer. Now, we sometimes go out without the kids for dinner or shopping. We still join library activities together.
I’m still amazed how one small brave step changed my life so much. My advice is: don’t be afraid to talk to other moms. You can meet them at the park, church, school, or the library. You might just make lifelong friends.

(本题10分)Popularization has in some cases changed the original meaning of emotional intelligence. Many people now misunderstand emotional intelligence as almost everything desirable in a person’s makeup that cannot be measured by an IQ test, such as character, motivation, confidence, mental stability, optimism and “people skills.” Research has shown that emotional skills may contribute to some of these qualities, but most of them move far beyond skill-based emotional intelligence.
We prefer to describe emotional intelligence as a specific set of skills that can be used for either good or bad purposes. The ability to accurately understand how others are feeling may be used by a doctor to find how best to help her patients, while a cheater might use it to control potential victims. Being emotionally intelligent does not necessarily make one a moral person.
Although popular beliefs regarding emotional intelligence run far ahead of what research can reasonably support, the overall effects of the publicity have been more beneficial than harmful. The most positive aspect of this popularization is a new and much needed emphasis on emotion by employers, educators and others interested in promoting social well-being. The popularization of emotional intelligence has helped both the public and researchers re-evaluate the functionality of emotions and how they serve people expediently in everyday life.
Although the continuing popular appeal of emotional intelligence is desirable, we hope that such attention will excite a greater interest in the scientific and scholarly study of emotion. It is our hope that in coming decades, advances in science will offer new perspectives from which to study how people manage their lives. Emotional intelligence, with its focus on both head and heart, may serve to point us in the right direction.
What is a common misunderstanding of emotional intelligence?
A.It can be measured by an IQ test. B.It helps to exercise a person’s mind.
C.It includes a set of emotional skills. D.It refers to a person’s positive qualities.
Why does the author mention “doctor” and “cheater” in paragraph 2?
A.To explain a rule. B.To clarify a concept. C.To present a fact. D.To make a prediction.
What does the underlined word “expediently” mean in paragraph 3?
A.Adaptively. B.Sincerely. C.Doubtfully. D.Terribly.
What does the last paragraph mainly talk about concerning emotional intelligence?
A.Its appeal to the public. B.Expectations for future studies.
C.Its practical application. D.Scientists with new perspectives.
(本题10分)In his 1936 work How to Win Friends and Influence People, Dale Carnegie wrote: “I have come to the conclusion that there is only one way to get the best of an argument — and that is to avoid it.” This distaste for arguments is common, but it depends on a mistaken view of arguments that causes problems for our personal and social lives — and in many ways misses the point of arguing in the first place.
Carnegie would be right if arguments were fights, which is how we often think of them. Like physical fights, verbal (言语的) fights can leave both sides bloodied. Even when you win, you end up no better off. You would be feeling almost as bad if arguments were even just competitions — like, say, tennis tournaments. Pairs of opponents hit the ball back and forth until one winner comes out from all who entered. Everybody else loses. This kind of thinking explains why so many people try to avoid arguments.
However, there are ways to win an argument every time. When you state your position, formulate (阐述) an argument for what you claim and honestly ask yourself whether your argument is any good. When you talk with someone who takes a stand, ask them to give you a reason for their view and spell out their argument fully. Assess its strength and weakness. Raise objections (异议) and listen carefully to their replies. This method will require effort, but practice will make you better at it.
These tools can help you win every argument — not in the unhelpful sense of beating your opponents but in the better sense of learning about what divides people, learning why they disagree with us and learning to talk and work together with them. If we readjust our view of arguments — from a verbal fight or tennis game to a reasoned exchange through which we all gain respect and understanding from each other — then we change the very nature of what it means to “win” an argument.
What is the author’s attitude toward Carnegie’s understanding of argument?
A.Critical. B.Supportive. C.Tolerant. D.Uncertain.
Why do many people try to avoid arguments?
A.They lack debating skills. B.They may feel bad even if they win.
C.They fear being ignored. D.They are not confident in themselves.
What does the underlined phrase “spell out” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Defend. B.Explain. C.Conclude. D.Repeat.
What is the key to “winning” an argument according to the author?
A.Sense of logic. B.Solid supporting evidence.
C.Proper manners. D.Understanding from both sides.
Nervous about your future college roommate? You’re not alone. Kick off your college journey with these tips for getting along with well, just about anyone.
Before you make the big move into the dorms, reach out to your roommate or roommates and exchange contact information. 36(2.5分) Getting the introductions out of the way can make the transition (过渡) a lot smoother.
Once you’ve moved in, sit down with your roommate or roommates and establish some ground rules. 37(2.5分) You can also talk about having friends over, sharing things and much more. You don’t have to be bossy, but express yourself and let your roommate know how you feel.
After setting the basics, you can start building a real connection. The easiest way for you and your new college roommate or roommates to avoid conflict is to get to know each other. Talk about your likes and dislikes. It will be helpful when living in such tight quarters.
But even if you get along well, you won’t agree on everything. When problems come up, don’t rush to tell everyone on your dorm floor. 39(2.5分) You can always get help from your residence hall advisor if you feel uncomfortable addressing the issue alone, but don’t let problems pile up and get worse.
40(2.5分) There is nothing wrong with creating a lifelong bond with your college roommates, but there is also nothing wrong with just sharing a room. Respecting each other and each other’s space will help you get along — and that’s a pretty good deal.
A.Move-in day can be very stressful.
B.Talk things over with your roommate first.
C.You might also find some common interests.
D.You can discuss dorm-room cleaning responsibilities.
E.Checking their social media platform might be necessary.
F.It’s certain that your roommates will be your lifelong friends.

The image of the staircase in the Smiley Building has haunted my memories for twenty years since high school graduation. Every school day, I climbed those concrete steps to reach math class or my locker. A naughty and misbehaved guy called Tom and some of his followers would sit on the staircase, rating others on a scale of 1 to 10 by appearance as they passed by and laughed very loud, impolite, arrogant (自大的) and rude.
Every time I walked up or down those stairs, their laughter echoed in my ears. “Just ignore them,” my mother advised. And I did. On the surface. But inside the painful message that I was “ugly” stuck deep in my soul. Quite often, the staircase would appear in my nightmares.
Eventually, I graduated, got admitted to the college, earned a degree in Communications, launched a rewarding career as a writer and teacher, got married, and raised two amazing boys. But when I looked in the mirror, the doubts returned, bearing a deep hatred against Tom, his followers and even the school.
When I received an invitation to my twentieth high school reunion, my mother was puzzled as I didn’t like high school. But I wanted to go back to confront those boys. I wanted to tell them how hurtful and unkind they were and that I had all the things they’d made me feel I wasn’t worthy of. I practiced my speech in my mind as I ran errands (出门办事), cooked dinner, and exercised outdoors.
Soon, the big day arrived. I put on my favorite blouse, touched up my make-up, and steeled myself for the coming Friday night, ready for the “fight”.
注意:
(1) 续写词数应为150个左右;

People started using the website, and soon magazines, radio shows, and news reporters were talking about it. Libraries and schools told their students to check it out. If you go to the website now, you’ll find information on astronomy, biology, history, math, and spelling. The math programs take twelve to seventeen weeks to complete. A student could learn simple math in a year by studying just an hour a day. But there aren’t just online classes there. You’ll also find games, videos, music, and activities to help you learn. Of course, the teacher hasn’t done this alone. Volunteers who help include teachers and students from across the country, parents who use the website, and even volunteers from NASA.

【答案】28.D 29.B 30.A 31.B
根据第一段中“Many people now misunderstand emotional intelligence as almost everything desirable in a person’s makeup that cannot be measured by an IQ test, such as character, motivation, confidence, mental stability, optimism and “people skills.” (如今许多人将情商误解为一个人所有无法通过智商测试衡量的理想特质,如性格、动机、自信、心理稳定性、乐观和“社交技能”)”可知,情商常常被误解为一个人的积极品质。故选D项。
29.推理判断题。根据第二段中“The ability to accurately understand how others are feeling may be used by a doctor to find how best to help her patients, while a cheater might use it to control potential victims. Being emotionally intelligent does not necessarily make one a moral person. (能够准确理解他人感受的能力,既可以成为医生帮助患者的利器,也可能沦为骗子操控受害者的工具。拥有高情商,并不等同于拥有高尚品德)”可知,此处先提到医生和骗子可以用情商做截然不同的事,再提到高情商不等于道德高尚。因此,作者是通过对比案例,阐释“情商技能本身无道德属性”的概念。故选B项。
30.词句猜测题。根据画线词的上文“The most positive aspect of this popularization is a new and much needed emphasis on emotion by employers, educators and others interested in promoting social well-being. The popularization of emotional intelligence has helped both the public and researchers re-evaluate the functionality of emotions and how they serve people expediently in everyday life.(这种宣传最积极的成效是:雇主、教育工作者以及其他关注社会福祉的人士开始重新重视情绪的作用,这种关注恰恰是我们最需要的。情商的普及有助于公众和研究人员重新评估情绪的功能以及它们在日常生活中如何expediently为人们服务)”可知,这里肯定了情绪的作用,是正面的内容,因此重新评估的另一点也有关情绪的益处,应该是灵活地为人们服务,画线词意为“权宜地”,与Adaptively“适应性地”意思相近。故选A项。
根据最后一段中“Although the continuing popular appeal of emotional intelligence is desirable, we hope that such attention will excite a greater interest in the scientific and scholarly study of emotion. It is our hope that in coming decades, advances in science will offer new perspectives from which to study how people manage their lives. Emotional intelligence, with its focus on both head and heart, may serve to point us in the right direction. (尽管情商的持续流行备受期待,但我们更希望这种关注能激发学界对情绪科学研究的更大兴趣。我们期待未来数十年间,科学进步能为研究人类如何管理生活提供全新视角。情商既关注头脑也关注心灵,它可以为我们指明正确的方向)”可知,该段关注的是对未来情商研究的期望。故选B项。
【答案】32.A 33.B 34.B 35.D

根据第一段中“This distaste for arguments is common, but it depends on a mistaken view of arguments that causes problems for our personal and social lives — and in many ways misses the point of arguing in the first place.(这种对争论的厌恶是很普遍的,但它取决于对争论的错误看法,这种观点会给我们的个人和社会生活带来问题——而且在很多方面,它首先忽略了争论的意义)”可知,作者对于Carnegie对争论的看法持批判态度,故选A。
根据第二段中“Like physical fights, verbal (言语的) fights can leave both sides bloodied. Even when you win, you end up no better off. You would be feeling almost as bad if arguments were even just competitions — like, say, tennis tournaments.(和身体上的打斗一样,言语上的打斗也会让双方流血。即使你赢了,你最终也不会变得更好。如果争论只是一场比赛,比如网球比赛,你也会感觉很糟糕)”可知, 很多人尽量避免争论,是因为即使赢了他们也感觉很糟糕,故选B。
34.词句猜测题。根据划线短语所在句“ask them to give you a reason for their view”可知,让他们为自己的观点提供依据,即让他们充分阐明他们的观点,spell out意为“解释明白,讲清楚”,故选B。
根据最后一段中“If we readjust our view of arguments — from a verbal fight or tennis game to a reasoned exchange through which we all gain respect and understanding from each other — then we change the very nature of what it means to “win” an argument.(如果我们重新调整我们对争论的看法——从一场口水战或网球比赛转变为一种理性的交流,通过这种交流,我们都能获得彼此的尊重和理解——那么我们就改变了‘赢得’争论的本质)”可知,作者认为“赢得”争论的关键是通过交流获得彼此的尊重和理解,故选D。

故填to。

故填which。
on the other hand为固定短语,意为“另一方面”。故填the。

Friends in My Heart
Good morning, everyone! Today, I would like to talk about friends in my heart.
Friends are extremely important in our lives. They stand by us when we are in trouble and share our joys when we succeed. A life without friends is like a journey without sunshine, making us feel lonely and helpless. In my opinion, a good friend should have two key qualities. First, honesty — true friends always tell each other the truth. Second, kindness — they care about others and are willing to offer help whenever needed.
Let’s cherish our true friends. They make our world warmer and brighter.

注意:
(1) 续写词数应为150个左右;

However, at the reunion, what I experienced made me feel I really needed to forgive. People present greeted me with warm smiles and kind words. They complimented my achievements and how well I was doing. I looked around, trying to find Tom and his group. But most faces were unfamiliar, and the ones who ever laughed at me together with Tom didn’t seem to have the same arrogance as before. They asked about each other’s updates, including mine. I started chatting with some of them. They also shared stories about their struggles and growth over the years. I realized that everyone had changed, and holding onto the past grudges was only weighing me down. My planned speech wilted (枯萎) on my lips. “But how about Tom?” I was wondering.
At this moment, the organizer read a letter from Tom, who was absent from the gathering. In the letter, Tom wrote, “I’m deeply sorry for my past behavior. I said things that were hurtful and acted like a jerk. I was immature and thoughtless. If you remember me that way, please forgive me.” Reading those words, I felt a wave of relief wash over me. I let go of all the pain and anger that had been with me for so long. I knew that forgiving was not for them, but for myself. From that moment on, I felt free, ready to embrace life with a lighter heart and a more open mind. I felt happier, more self-confident and attractive and the staircase appearing in my nightmares was nowhere to be seen.
