(本题10分)It had been a week since we moved to New York. On the way to a picnic at Yaddo Gardens, I complained, “New school, no friends, nothing to do. I hate it!” Mom and Dad exchanged glances, sighing, as the silent car wound into the shady path.
“We’re here!” my dad said, attempting enthusiasm. We laid out the blanket, looking at the gardens that were just starting to bloom. A number of people in green shirts and garden gloves bent over, hard at work. With a smile, a chatty woman named Vera told us about their voluntary work here. “Hey,” my dad elbowed me, “maybe you should work here!”
I rolled my eyes, but with nothing else to do, I decided to give it a try. I was there bright and early on a Tuesday morning. Entering my assigned garden, my hands struggled with a bucket and gloves. Vera introduced me to John, the head gardener, whose energy truly impressed me. At eighty-one, he still hiked mountains and bounded around with ease, cutting and clearing plants with a skill I could never have.
Over the next several months, I came to the gardens regularly. John would always be there, smiling and ready to teach me a new lesson about roses and life. During snack breaks, my new friend and I would chat and discuss everything from mountains to middle school, laughing and learning the joys of a friendship across generations.
One day I opened up about my fears for the fall. “I’m just not ready for school,” I said, biting my lip. “What if I have no friends?”
John said nothing, but took me instead to a spot overlooking the four-quadrant (象限) garden. “See these two quadrants? Now look at the other two. What’s different?” I looked back and forth. “The left ones are shorter!” “Exactly. From a certain spot, all the beds look the same size. It’s called perspectivism. You can see your new school as scary, or as an opportunity. The choice is yours.”
Three months later, after I had started high school, it was time for the Yaddo Gardens volunteer celebration. I saw John — my first friend in New York — and gave him a hug. “You were right,” I said. “I just needed a little perspective.”

A.A silent listener to her school fears. B.A reminder of her love for gardening.

A.Where there is life, there is hope. B.Friendship needs time to grow old.

(本题10分)Are you an open book, your face broadcasting every passing emotion, or more of a “poker face”, not showing what you are feeling? Scientists at Nottingham Trent University (NTU) say that wearing your heart on your face could actually give you a significant social advantage.
The study, led by Eithne Kavanagh, a research fellow at NTU’s School of Social Sciences, involving over 1,300 participants, noticed striking variations in how much people moved their faces during conversations. Importantly, this expressiveness emerged as a stable individual quality. People displayed similar levels of facial expressiveness across different contexts, with different social partners, and even over time periods up to four months.
The researchers say that facial expressiveness is linked to personality, with more agreeable individuals displaying more lively faces. Facial expressiveness can also translate into concrete social benefits. In a negotiation (谈判) task, more expressive individuals are more likely to secure a larger slice of a reward. The researchers suggest that agreeable, dynamic facial expressions may serve as a tool for building good relationships and smoothing over conflicts. Across the board, the results point to facial expressiveness serving an “affiliative (有亲和力的) function”, or a social glue that develops liking and smoother interactions.
Expressiveness is also linked to being seen as more “readable”, suggesting that a lively face makes one’s intentions and mental states easier for others to interpret. Beyond frequency of facial movements, people who employ facial expressions more strategically to suit social goals, such as looking friendly in a greeting, are also more well-liked.
The findings challenge the “poker face” common belief that a still and unemotional appearance is always most advantageous. Instead, they suggest that for most people, allowing one’s face to mirror inner states and intentions can invite warmer reactions. As the researchers conclude, “Being facially expressive is socially advantageous.” So, next time you catch yourself making lines on your forehead, or flashing a smile, know that your face just might be working on your behalf.

31.(2.5分)What may the author advise based on the findings of the study?

(本题10分)Nowadays, digital communication tools such as texts, video calls and emails have become the main ways for people to keep in touch. Yet people hold different opinions about whether text-based communication can build close emotional bonds the same way voice communication (phone, video chat and voice chat) does.
To figure out how different communication forms influence interpersonal ties, researchers conducted a series of experiments. In a field experiment, participants were asked to reconnect with an old friend either over the phone or e-mail. Other laboratory participants were invited to chat with a stranger over video, voice or text-based media. Results suggested that voice communication created stronger social ties and no increase in embarrassment, compared with text-based interactions. These findings break young people’s common misunderstanding that they can stay away from the social awkwardness by preferring a more indirect environment.
A further study also proved the limitations of text-based communication. In the experiment, teenagers were divided into two groups after finishing a stressful task: One group texted their mothers for comfort, while the other made phone calls. The research found that only voice calls could bring about an obvious drop in teenagers’ stress hormones. Although text messages are not cold or meaningless, they fail to produce the same biological effect as sincere spoken words.
From a biological view, hearing a familiar warm voice through voice communication can directly calm people’s nervous system and ease stress. Text-based communication only delivers written information, lacking the real-time emotional feedback. Even carefully written comforting words cannot bring the same positive physical reaction when people face pressure and anxiety.
Overall, although digital text-based communication brings certain convenience, it can never replace spoken interaction in building real social connections. Instead of hiding behind typed words, we should make phone calls or voice chats with family and friends regularly to develop real and lasting emotional ties.
32.(2.5分)Why do young people favor text-based communication?
A.To adapt to modern communication rules. B.To avoid social discomfort.
C.To improve the effectiveness of exchanges. D.To strengthen social connections.
33.(2.5分)What can be learned from the parent-child communication study?
A.Spoken words relieve pressure better.
B.Speaking pace affects communication.
C.Text messages lack emotional expressions.
D.Stress reduces willingness to communicate.
34.(2.5分)What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A.Possible direction for further study.
B.Scientific explanations of the findings.
C.Comparisons of different stress levels.
D.Introduction to a new research method.
35.(2.5分)What does the author suggest in the last paragraph?
A.Value digital benefits. B.Type words to express feelings.
C.Prioritize voice communication. D.Focus on the art of conversation.
(本题12.5分)Introverts are quieter, more thoughtful, careful, and really like being alone. Extroverts are more talkative, outgoing, energetic, and really like socializing. Friendships can suffer when those differences conflict. 36(2.5分) Here are some tips on how introverts and extroverts can be good friends.
Don’t label your friends. Personality exists on a continuous range, not a rigid fixed divide. 37(2.5分) In fact, most people show a mix of both characteristics, and their tendencies can shift depending on age and situation. You should view these as a way to understand others, not as fixed labels.
38(2.5分) If your friend is exhibiting a behaviour that’s bugging you, consider whether it might be due to personality differences instead of bad intentions. And then show a little grace accepting and respecting these personality differences, which will help friendships last long.
Say what you need. It is unavoidable for both sides to complain about each other. Your friends aren’t mind readers, so hiding your feelings will only lead to misunderstandings. 39(2.5分) For instance, introverts can tell extrovert friends to pause more while talking, and extroverts can also share their need for more active responses politely.
Appreciate your friend’s unique qualities. Extroverts bring vitality and passion to daily life, while introverts offer calmness and thoughtful insight, making their bond more diverse and meaningful. 40(2.5分)
To put it simply, introverts and extroverts are not destined to be contradictory. With mutual understanding, frank communication and respect for differences, they can break personality barriers and build sincere, long-lasting friendships.
A.Don’t take behaviors personally.
B.Try to change your own personality.
C.It means no one is completely one type or the other.
D.People can be categorized into two opposite extremes.
E.Actually, the two types can form deep, lasting friendships.
F.It is necessary to express your inner needs directly and bravely.
G.Such a positive contrast enriches friendship and makes it more precious.

On a bright afternoon, the warm sun shone gently over the school football court, covering the green grass with a soft golden glow. The school football team held an important training match to choose starters for the coming important school league (联赛). All players were divided into two teams to compete hard, each eager to show their best skills and win a place in the starting lineup (首发阵容).
The match soon heated up with quick passes and steps. Teammates called to each other now and then, but the atmosphere turned cold immediately. Early on, Tom’s teammate Frank accidentally passed the ball to the opposite (对方的) team. “Watch it! Can’t you pass right?” Tom shouted sharply, his face turning red with anger. Frank froze in place, head hung low, without saying a word.
Coach Peter, who had been watching closely from the sidelines, immediately blew his whistle and called a timeout. He pulled Tom aside, patted his shoulder gently and said firmly: “Football is not just about winning, but trust and teamwork. Keep calm or you’ll not get a chance.” Tom nodded unhappily and ran back onto the court. The match went on in tense silence: Tom remained clearly annoyed, while Frank tried hard to focus on every move to make up for his mistake.
Finally, Coach Peter blew his whistle and called “Game over!” The score was a 2-2 tie. Tom scored his team’s goals with wonderful shots, and stood proudly with his head held high, a big smile on his face, sure that he would make the team. He didn’t notice his teammates quietly keeping their distance. They gathered in small groups to chat softly among themselves, leaving him standing alone.

W: This is a photo of me with my three best friends. On the right is Jo. We were both born in the same hospital on the same day and Jo’s mom and mine became good friends. We have been playing together since we were little kids. She liked singing but I liked dancing. After school I went to university in Newcastle and she went to study law in London. There was no need to text and call daily, but we knew we were always there for each other. Dukey is a new friend. We joined the same company on the same day. He’s great fun. His parents are from Barbados but he was born in Oxford. He talks about holidays there. We’re all saving like mad, so we can go there too. Ah, and then there is Raff. We went to the same primary school but then his family moved to Dubai. And since then, we had lost touch. Years later, I saw his name online. Anyway, he’s now back in Oxford, working near me. It’s different from when we were teenagers, but we still love reading the same books. Isn’t that amazing?

A.Possible direction for further study.
B.Scientific explanations of the findings.

A.Value digital benefits. B.Type words to express feelings.

35.推理判断题。根据最后一段“Instead of hiding behind typed words, we should make phone calls or voice chats with family and friends regularly to develop real and lasting emotional ties.(与其躲在打出的文字背后,我们应定期与家人朋友通话或语音聊天,以建立真实持久的情感纽带)”可知,和打字发短信相比,作者建议人们应该优先选择语音交流。

Extroverts bring vitality and passion to daily life, while introverts offer calmness and thoughtful insight, making their bond more diverse and meaningful. 【答案】
56.thinking 57.qualities 58.supportive 59.balancing 60.to take 61.with 62.more efficient 63.but 64.who/that 65.our
leave sb. doing sth.表示“让某人一直做某事”,此处用think的现在分词作宾语补足语。

58.考查形容词。句意:一个好朋友应当给予支持。作表语,用形容词supportive。

【答案】Dear teacher and fellow classmates,
I’m greatly honored to be here and share my ideas about making friends.
I firmly believe that having several true friends is enough for us. Firstly, true friends will always stay by our side and give us a hand when we are trapped in hard times. They share our joys and sorrows wholeheartedly, which most casual acquaintances can never really do. Secondly, we don’t have enough time and energy to maintain close bonds with too many people. A few deep friendships are far more precious than hundreds of meaningless superficial relationships.
That’s my opinion. Thank you!

六、书面表达
67.(本题25分)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
When Peter announced the starting lineup, Tom found he wasn’t on the list.

Having realized his problems, Tom was determined to make a change.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version
When Peter announced the starting lineup, Tom found he wasn’t on the list. He burst out angrily, “I’m the best. Why am I not chosen?” He felt extremely mistaken and could hardly accept this disappointing result. Coach Peter looked at him seriously, reminding him of the importance of teamwork he had stressed before. Seeing all the teammates keep a distance from him, Tom suddenly recalled his impolite shouts toward Frank. He gradually calmed down and began to reflect on his own behavior. It dawned on him that his bad temper had destroyed team harmony, leaving him filled with deep regret and self-blame.
Having realized his problems, Tom was determined to make a change. Mustering up courage, he approached Frank and apologized sincerely for his rude outburst and impatient attitude. Emotions well controlled, he never lost his temper easily from then on. In the following training, he kept calm all the time and was always ready to cheer up the teammates who made errors. He devoted himself to teamwork and attached great importance to team spirit rather than personal achievement. His gentle attitude and considerate behavior gradually won everyone’s support and trust. Eventually, he truly understood the real meaning of teamwork and sportsmanship.
