From: Hiro Katana <hirokboss@email.com>
To: Rachel Baines <Rachel. baines@email.com>
Re: Shhh...
Date: December 10, 2025
Hi Rachel,
We have to start planning for Jan’s surprise party. It’s about a month away and we have barely got anything organized! I started a list and just gave people jobs. I only included people I’ve talked to, and I don’t know if you’ve talked to anyone else.
Please feel free to add to the to-do list!!
- Venue: Wendy said she has some connections.
- Date: We said January 20th? Is that decided? Does Marty know this so he can make sure Jan is free that day?
- Food: Hilary &Matt — decide on appetizers, or a sit-down meal? Dessert table? Or just a cake?
- Entertainment: Jess — figure out whether to hire a band or a DJ? Or should we just play our own music?
- Ticket prices: Rachel & Hiro decide on admission price to cover costs.
- Invitations: Rachel & Hiro — figure out who to invite!!! Send out a “Save-the-Date” by December 15.
Am I missing anything else? I feel like I’m forgetting something. Is it too luxury? Maybe we should make an alternate plan in case people don’t want to pay to go to a birthday party.
Let me know!
Hiro

(本题10分)One day, my young grandson Milo asked me a special favor: he needed to “borrow” a grandmother for his best friend Charlie. Charlie was my grandson’s first best friend, who had become close friends in kindergarten.
“Our class is making cards for Mother’s Day,” he explained, “but when I asked the teacher when Grandma’s Day was, she said that there really wasn’t one. So, Charlie and I are going to make a day”, he assured me, “but we need a grandma for Charlie. I have two, but he doesn’t even have one.” Our house was no more than a quick twenty-minute drive away. I could hardly refuse his sweet request.
Three days later, I found an envelope with two large red hearts, where a stamp would usually be attached, under my pillow: Grandmother’s Day, 2:00 p.m., Saturday, May 13.
At the appointed time, I knocked on the screen door. Welcoming yellow and blue balloons were tied to the handle, so I did not want to risk pulling it open. The boys were clean and excited, waiting for me eagerly. The table was beautifully prepared with lemonade, forks and themed napkins (餐巾). Every piece was covered with different stickers, such as stars, animals, trucks and cars. Mine had a warm little grandma pattern, with the words “Happy Grandmother’s Day” on it.
Charlie could not hide his pride and said happily that his mother had made a chocolate cake for the event, “But,” he told everyone, “you have to eat a sandwich first. And,” he continued without a pause, “MY GRANDMOTHER came to my house yesterday, and we decorated the cake with cream together.”
“No!” Milo immediately corrected. “That’s MY grandmother.” He frowned (皱眉) firmly, unwilling to share me with anyone else. Noticing their argument, I was about to kneel down and comfort them. But Milo suddenly calmed himself down, looked at Charlie sincerely and said, “Next Grandmother’s Day, we’ll prepare everything together from start to finish. And we’ll save the biggest piece for Grandma-no arguing. We’ll celebrate happily and have a wonderful Grandmother’s Day again.”
Why did Milo turn to the author for help?
A.To act as Charlie’s grandma.
B.To prepare a family gathering.
C.To accompany his lonely friend.
D.To draw a card for Mother’s Day.
How did the author react to Milo’s request?
A.She felt surprised at the boy’s plan.
B.She thought the boy’s idea was creative.
C.She was touched by Milo’s sincere idea.
D.She wondered if the plan would work well.
Which of the following best describes Milo?
A.Caring and easy-going.
B.Childish but thoughtful.
C.Independent and devoting.
D.Self-centered but determined.
What is the main theme of the passage?
A.The warmth of family and friendship.
B.The value of friendship between kids.
C.The courage of solving disagreements.
D.The love from the elderly to the young.
(本题10分)Founded by singer, author and broadcaster Cerys Matthews, the Good Life Experience is all about connecting guests with things that really matter, through music, food, literature, ideas, workshops and the great outdoors.
It’s a festival that feels both timely and necessary. In an age of deliberately designed online lives, it offers something genuine: the chance to light a campfire, learn a craft from an expert, share stories face-to-face, or simply enjoy a moment of collective silence under the stars.
The event, held on a beautiful country estate in Wales, is built on the belief that happiness is found in participation and creation, not just consumption. Its programme, accordingly, is a thoughtfully curated (筹办) mix of the hands-on and the inspirational. You might find yourself learning to forge a knife one hour, and listening to a celebrated author read by the river the next. There are workshops in leatherworking and woodcraft, opportunities to try wild swimming, and countless campfires around which strangers become friends through conversation. The food stalls prioritize local and seasonal produce, and the music stages feature everything from folk to soul, often inviting audience participation.
“We wanted to create a space where people could switch off from the digital noise and reconnect with their own hands, minds, and with each other,” says Matthews. “It’s about the joy of making something, the satisfaction of learning a skill your ancestors might have known, and the deep connections that form when you share that experience. ”
The festival challenges the modern idea of entertainment as a passive activity. It’s a cure for the speed and isolation of contemporary life, promoting slowness, skill-sharing, and community. It’s an example of a richer, more connected way of living.
Why did the author describe the festival as timely and necessary?
A.Because it promotes Welsh tourism. B.Because it was founded by a famous singer.
C.Because it promotes hands-on activities. D.Because it resists artificial online lives.
What is the core value of the Good Life Experience?
A.Passive enjoyment of wonderful scenery. B.Consumption of expensive local produce.
C.Active participation and mutual connection. D.Promotion of digital entertainment culture.
What can we learn about the programs of the festival?
A.They focus only on practical craft skills. B.They encourage audience involvement.
C.They are mainly commercial performances. D.They are designed for professional artists.
What can we infer from Cerys Matthews’ words?
A.She hopes people can escape digital distractions. B.She thinks ancestors’ skills are outdated.
C.She prefers online interaction to face-to-face talks. D.She aims to make the festival a commercial success.
Cinco de Mayo is probably the holiday most often celebrated that no one understands.
Literally (根据字面意思) “Fifth of May”, Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican holiday celebrating the Battle of Puebla, which took place on May 5, 1862. In 1861, France sent a big army to invade Mexico, as they wanted to collect some war debts. The French army was much larger, better trained and equipped than the Mexicans struggling to defend (保卫) the road to Mexico City. The French army reached Puebla, where the Mexicans won a huge victory. The victory was shortlived, as the French army regrouped and continued, and eventually took Mexico City, but the joy of an unlikely victory against France is remembered every May fifth.
Mexico celebrates its independence on September 16, because it was on that day in 1810 that Miguel Hidalgo invited his people to take up arms and join him in fighting against Spanish rulers. Independence Day is a much more important holiday in Mexico. For some reason, Cinco de Mayo is celebrated more in the United States of America, by Mexicans and Americans alike, than it is in Mexico. One theory for why it is more popular in the USA is that at one time, it was celebrated in all of Mexico and by Mexicans living in former Mexican areas such as Texas and California. It was ignored in Mexico after a while but still celebrated in the north of the border, which never got out of the habit of remembering the famous battle.
In Puebla and in many American cities with large Mexican populations, there are parades, dancing and festivals. Traditional Mexican food is often served or sold. Mariachi (街头音乐) bands fill town squares, and a lot of beers are served. It’s a fun holiday, really more about celebrating the Mexican way of life than about remembering the battle which happened 157 years ago. In the USA, schoolchildren decorate their classrooms and try their hand at cooking some basic Mexican food. All over the world, Mexican restaurants bring in mariachi bands and offer specials for what’s almost certain to be a packed house.
Why do more Americans celebrate Cinco de Mayo?
A.Some American areas once belonged to Mexico.
B.Americans are influenced by Mexican culture.
C.Mexicans don’t form the habit of having a holiday.
D.Many Mexicans value Independence Day.
How can schoolchildren celebrate Cinco de Mayo?
A.By performing music at restaurants.
B.By trying making some Mexican food.
C.By turning the classroom into a battlefield.
D.By offering special gifts to their teachers.
By celebrating Cinco de Mayo, people mainly show ________.
A.where the history is honored most
B.what special customs they have
C.how Mexicans gained independence
D.who should be remembered forever
According to the passage, people celebrate Cinco de Mayo because Mexicans ________.
A.paid off their war debts
B.succeeded in defending Mexico City
C.gained independence from Spanish
D.defeated the French army in Puebla

The Dragon Boat Festival was approaching, and the ancient town in southern China was bathed in warm early summer sunshine. The streets were dotted with fresh green bamboo leaves, and the air was filled with the faint fragrance of mugwort (艾蒿), announcing the arrival of the traditional festival.
Seventeen-year-old Ethan, who had lived in the United States with his parents since childhood, was sent back to his hometown to spend the festival with his grandfather. Having grown up immersed in Western culture, Ethan held a strong sense of indifference towards traditional Chinese festivals. He regarded the Dragon Boat Festival as nothing but an old, outdated custom, far less attractive than Western carnivals and parties. All he wanted to do was stay in his room, scrolling through social media or playing online games, showing no interest in the festive atmosphere around him.
Grandfather was a well-known local inheritor of traditional zongzi-making skills, and he had been eagerly looking forward to Ethan’s return, hoping to pass on the family craft and help his grandson connect with his cultural roots. He specially picked fresh bamboo leaves, prepared high-quality glutinous rice, sweet red beans and salty egg yolks, and invited Ethan to make zongzi with him.
However, Ethan frowned and refused rudely without a second thought. He complained that making zongzi was tedious (冗长的) and time-consuming, and couldn’t understand why people still stuck to such old customs. Hearing his words, Grandfather’s smile faded away, and a deep sense of disappointment crossed his wrinkled face. He silently carried the ingredients to the courtyard, sitting alone on the stone bench, slowly folding the bamboo leaves.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1:
Watching Grandfather’s bent back in the courtyard, Ethan was seized with a complicated mixture of guilt and hesitation.

Paragraph 2:
As the steaming zongzi were taken out, the rich fragrance filled the whole courtyard, touching Ethan’s heart deeply.

M: I don’t think I appreciate traditional festivals like Christmas and Easter as much as my family.
W: What do you mean?
M: I'm just not that into them. Christmas and Easter have many extra parts involved. I like to celebrate with the people I love in a comfortable environment. My favorite holiday is the Summer Festival.
W: Is it because of our tradition to swim in my pool every year before the parade?
M: No, though that is fun. It's because after the parade, we go to my parents’ giant barbecue with all their friends. Everyone brings a dish of food or drinks, and then we talk and tell stories until the stars come out.
W: People do that on Christmas and Easter too, you know? I think it just depends on your family's traditions.
M: For some reason I just feel that most people feel the need to buy expensive things that are unnecessary during Christmas and Easter. There is no expectation of getting or giving gifts. It feels like you are forced into being nice because of a date.
W: Yes, but you don’t have to do any of that to celebrate. My family makes gifts for one another, or we make promises, saying we will help each other with projects or housework.

Oktoberfest is probably Germany’s best known national festival. It is so popular that it is now celebrated in countries all over the world. Everywhere from Canada to the middle east. However, it pains me to realize how poorly Oktoberfest is understood. As I grew up in northern Bavaria, the state in the south of Germany. Where the festival began. This important cultural event is often seen as nothing more than a celebration of drinking and a wild party. Although local beer is certainly a large part of the celebrations, I would argue that Oktoberfest is so much more than that. The first October fest celebrated the marriage of the future king Ludwig I and queen Therese in 1810. Now, more than two centuries later, Oktoberfest is a celebration of Bavarian culture as a whole. It’s a time to wear traditional clothes, dance and sing to traditional music and eat special foods. Most importantly, Oktoberfest is a celebration of Joy. At the festival’s heart is the idea of communicating a general feeling of friendship and togetherness. That is the real meaning of Oktoberfest.

A.They focus only on practical craft skills. B.They encourage audience involvement.

【答案】32.A 33.B 34.B 35.D
根据第三段中“One theory for why it is more popular in the USA is that at one time, it was celebrated in all of Mexico and by Mexicans living in former Mexican areas such as Texas and California. (为什么它在美国更受欢迎的一个理论是,有一段时间,整个墨西哥以及生活在德克萨斯州和加利福尼亚州等前墨西哥地区的墨西哥人都会庆祝这个节日。)”可知,更多的美国人庆祝Cinco de Mayo是因为美国的德克萨斯州和加利福尼亚州等地区之前属于墨西哥,那里的墨西哥人会庆祝这个节日,即因为一些美国地区曾经属于墨西哥。故选A项。
根据最后一段中“In the USA, schoolchildren decorate their classrooms and try their hand at cooking some basic Mexican food. (在美国,学生们装饰他们的教室,并尝试自己做一些基本的墨西哥食物。)”可知,学生们可以通过尝试做一些墨西哥食物来庆祝这个节日。故选B项。
34.细节理解题。根据最后一段中“It’s a fun holiday, really more about celebrating the Mexican way of life than about remembering the battle which happened 157 years ago. (这是一个有趣的节日,更多的是庆祝墨西哥人的生活方式,而不是纪念157年前发生的那场战争。)”可知,人们在这个节日更多的是庆祝墨西哥人的生活方式,也就是展示他们特殊的风俗习惯。故选B项。
35.细节理解题。根据第二段中“Literally (根据字面意思) “Fifth of May”, Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican holiday celebrating the Battle of Puebla, which took place on May 5, 1862. (字面意思是“五月五日”,Cinco de Mayo是墨西哥的节日,庆祝1862年5月5日发生的普埃布拉战役。)”和“The French army reached Puebla, where the Mexicans won a huge victory. The victory was shortlived, as the French army regrouped and continued, and eventually took Mexico City, but the joy of an unlikely victory against France is remembered every May fifth. (法国军队到达了普埃布拉,墨西哥人在那里取得了巨大的胜利。这场胜利是短暂的,因为法国军队重新集结并继续前进,最终占领了墨西哥城,但每年的5月5日,人们都会记住这场对法国不太可能的胜利带来的喜悦。)”可知,人们庆祝这个节日是因为墨西哥人曾在历史上的这一天在普埃布拉击败了法国军队。故选D项。

【答案】
56.Celebrated 57.competition 58.who/that 59.various/varied 60.in 61.measures 62.are greeted 63.sharing 64.formally 65.an
故填in。

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1
Watching Grandfather’s bent back in the courtyard, Ethan was seized with a complicated mixture of guilt and hesitation. He stepped out of the room slowly, his eyes falling on Grandfather’s rough but deft hands folding bamboo leaves neatly. Sensing his approach, Grandfather looked up with a gentle smile, patiently demonstrating every step without urging. Ethan sat down quietly, imitating his movements clumsily. Despite Ethan's failing several times, Grandfather guided him with endless patience, telling him the stories of Qu Yuan behind the festival while they worked. Gradually, Ethan’s restlessness faded away, and he became fully absorbed in the delicate process.
Paragraph 2
As the steaming zongzi were taken out, the rich fragrance filled the whole courtyard, touching Ethan’s heart deeply. He took a bite of the warm zongzi, tasting not only the sweet filling but also the love of family and the weight of tradition. For the first time, he truly understood that the Dragon Boat Festival was far more than a simple festival — it carried the long history of China and the precious cultural roots of his family. A strong sense of cultural pride surged through him, and he completely let go of his previous prejudice. That summer, Ethan truly found his cultural identity and learned to cherish the precious traditions of his motherland.
