Times change! The day I heard that the Bright Bookstore was closing, I was sad. The bookstore had been in the neighborhood for 50 years, and it was a great place where people could know each other through their love of books.
When I met Old Tim, the store’s owner, he said it was difficult to run a traditional bookstore. Most young people read e-books and more people bought books online.
Childhood memories came back to me so clearly. A group of us kids used to go to the store, spending hours reading there or just talking with Tim. Tim encouraged us to share our ideas by writing them on a large board.
A few months later, I was back and was surprised to see that the Bright Bookstore was still open for business. It was still old, but inside it was like a different world. In an area, a book reading was going on. Nearby, some readers were sharing their ideas on a screen instead of the large board. Some were reading on computers. It even had a coffee shop selling nice food. Clearly, the Bright Bookstore was in good, creative hands.
Tim told me that there were more community events in the coffee shop such as book readings and even concerts and movie nights.
“Well, as you can see, technology and creativity have brought my old bookstore into the 21st century! I’m so glad to see that everything I wanted to offer to the community is still here,” said Tim.
No matter how times change, there are always people who love reading. With the development of technology, traditional bookstores should also change in a creative way.

A. The bookstore has a history of 40 years.
B. Tim keeps the core (核心的) value of the bookstore.
C. Readers can only enjoy concerts in the coffee shop.
D. Tim refused to use any new technology at first.
( ) 51. The writer mainly wants to remind us that __________.
A. e-books will take the place of paper books
B. a creative mind can make a big difference
C. technology brings trouble to traditional businesses
D. old bookstores are no longer needed by people

Over the past ten years, China has developed quickly, and its high-speed rail system stands out as clear proof (证明). On December 26 of last year, three new high-speed rail lines started service. With a network of these new lines, China’s total high-speed rail operating mileage (运营里程) has reached over 50,000 kilometers. It is more than the total length of all high-speed rail lines in the rest of the world.
Nowadays, high-speed rail serves 97% of Chinese cities with over 500,000 people. 57. Traveling between cities within 500 kilometers takes only one to two hours, and a 1,000-kilometer journey takes about four hours. An average of 16 million passengers take the high-speed rail every day. Back then, buying train tickets during busy seasons was a headache, and the average train speed was only 60 kilometers per hour.
High-speed rail now connects big cities with medium-sized and small towns, and drives travel and local industries (产业). For example, after the Nanchang-Huangshan high-speed rail opened in 2017, Jiangxi Province saw a big rise in tourist visits over ten years. What’s more, China has shared its technology and experience through working with over 40 countries.
From a late-comer to a world-leading project, China’s high-speed rail stands as a proud symbol of the country’s progress. China’s railway industry is also exploring faster maglev (磁悬浮) trains to drive further development in transportation in the future.

Tina is my sister. She used to be fat and others often laughed at her, so she became very shy. She was scared to say hello to strangers. She was afraid to ask simple questions and speak loud in front of others. It seemed that she felt afraid of everything in her life. She used to believe that she would be like this all her life.
But one day, her teacher encouraged Tina to change herself. He said, “If you can give it a try, you will have a chance to make a change. But if you never try, your life is only going to get worse.” Tina was deeply touched. She thought, “Why not have a try? After all, I had nothing to lose.”
The first thing Tina did was to lose weight. She had a strict diet and did exercise every day. After 6 months, she lost 90 pounds. This taught her that she could change herself.
A few months later, Tina took part in a singing competition at her school. For the first time, she was able to sing aloud in front of many people. In the end, she got a big prize!
After the competition, Tina made a to-do list and started changing. She tried her best to finish the things on the list one by one. When working on them, she became more and more confident.
One day, Tina told me her dream. “You promise not to laugh. I want to be a singer when I grow up,” she said. I didn’t laugh. Instead, I said, “I once dreamed of being a reporter. We’d better find out if you’ve got any talent then, and check with our mum and dad first to make sure they don’t mind their daughter taking singing classes.”

Food shortage (匮乏) is a big problem in the world. Right now, there are more than 1 billion hungry people in the world. Can you imagine many children go to sleep with an empty stomach, and many even die of hunger each year.
What caused food shortage? First, there have been more disasters (灾难) recently. This is bad for farmers and hurts their ability to grow food. Also, a growing population makes feeding everyone more difficult. Another big reason is food waste. Most people don’t realize how much food they throw away every day. Sometimes we cook too much, or we don’t use it before it goes bad. The average person throws away 50kg of food every year. More than one third of all food produced worldwide goes to waste each year, according to the UN. That is 1. 3 billion tons of good food being wasted.
If the wasted food was saved, it could feed lots of people. The food wasted in Europe could feed 200 million people, and the food wasted in Latin America could feed 300 million people.
So think twice next time you want to throw away extra food on your plate. By cutting down food waste, we could also help put food on the empty plate of some hungry children. It’s necessary for people to remember not to waste food. That’s why Oct. 16 is set up by the UN as World Food Day.
How to reduce food waste? Do not order too much at a restaurant. Only order as much as you can eat. If you cannot eat all the food you ordered, take the rest of it home. Don’t be too picky (挑剔) about food. Some food may not taste great, but your body needs it. Keep an eye on what food you have at home. Don’t buy food that is more than you can eat, especially vegetables and fruit.
Food shortage is a serious problem. Many children go to sleep hungry and even 74 every year. 75 are disasters, a growing population, and above all, food waste. World Food Day is set up by the UN 76 . What can we do? We should 77 at a restaurant, take leftovers home, not be too picky, and avoid buying too much food.
