I have struggled with speaking English since learning it as a second language at 27. Early in my teaching career, students complained about my accent, and my department chair once summed up my performance: Dr. Sun was a good teacher, but he had an accent. Even my children urged me to try harder. “Anything can be done,” they insisted. The unspoken accusation was clear: If I still sounded foreign, I wasn’t trying hard enough.
What neither of them knew was that biology had already cast the die.
There is a term for the firm influence of one’s mother tongue: imprinting, an early, mostly unchangeable form of learning. The idea first entered science through the brilliance of Konrad Lorenz, who famously persuaded newly hatched goslings to follow him as if he were their mother. At the time, imprinting was mostly treated as an animal curiosity. Its deeper relevance to humans took longer to sink in.
Decades of research since then have reinforced the point. Human brains pass through a critical period for language acquisition. During childhood, neural (神经的) circuits are finely tuned to absorb sounds and accents. Later, those circuits become less flexible, not because adults are lazy, but because gene expression changes with age. This is why children can pick up a new language without an accent, while adults, no matter how dedicated, cannot.
I stopped fighting this biological limit and focused on areas imprinting does not control: word choice, sentence structure and rhythm. Something unexpected happened – my English writing improved greatly, and I even began writing books in English.
Biology does not write our future, but it does draw boundaries. That is why we abandon many childhood dreams: basketball for being too short, soccer for starting too late. Ignoring them, we trip up. Understanding them, we can work around them. The best kind of confidence is not the belief that you can do anything. It is the wisdom to know what you cannot do, and the discipline to stop wasting precious time trying to prove otherwise.
4. What did the author’s children accuse him of?
A. Showing off his pronunciation. B. Not trying hard to drop his accent.
C. Speaking with an accent in class. D. Refusing to learn standard English.
5. What does the underlined phrase “cast the die” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Delayed the process. B. Unlocked the potential.
C. Improved the situation. D. Determined the outcome.
6. What makes it hard for adults to learn a foreign language without an accent?
A. Mental laziness. B. Learning habits. C. Biological changes. D. Genetic patterns.
7. What does the author intend to tell us?
A. Play to your strengths. B. It’s never too late to learn.
C. Practice makes perfect. D. Early bird catches the worm.
C
While we race into a future where we outsource (外包) most of our problem-solving to artificial intelligence, the greatest threat is not super intelligent machinery. It’s mindlessly putting too much trust in Big Tech and not enough trust in the power of our own minds.
A philosophy of artful thinking is a good way to avoid this. To think artfully means to solve problems using not just our brains, but also our hands, eyes, and ears, along with our emotions. This approach employs the cognitive (认知的) resources that are spread throughout our bodies but-often go unused.
Changing how we think is hard work. And it starts with a mindfulness practice. Accessing artful intelligence requires being mindful of how we think with our body, how we use our limbs (四肢), organs, and emotions to make sense of the world. Be mindful of all the different messages your body is sending you as well as the different roles and functions your bodily actions can play. For example, gesturing in conversations is not just communicative. These movements often help the speaker to sort out their thought process and assist in getting the words out.
Today, Big Tech is pushing a message of artificial-intelligence craziness and fear. What makes you stuck in it? It’s seeing the same things wherever you look. Big Tech gives you screens, hoping that your attention will always be attracted by their devices. If you want to find more freedom in this AI-filled world, improve your ability to mindfully shift your attention between different objects or levels of focus. Remember everything is born of a choice.
Artful thinking demands effortful mindfulness to ensure that what we do, what we hope to achieveby using these technological tools, will not weaken our humanity. As Thich Nhat Hanh said, “Mindful living is an art, and each of us has to train to be an artist.”
8. What can we learn about artful thinking?
A. It simplifies problem-solving. B. It focuses on developing our brains.
C. It prevents us from over-relying on AI. D. It helps promote high-tech machinery.
9. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Benefits of artful intelligence. B. The approach to artful thinking.
C. Significance of being mindful. D. The challenges of mindfulness practice.
10. What does the author suggest we do in the AI-filled world?
A. Enhance the flexibility of attention. B. Adapt to the rise of AI.
C. Avoid the interruptions from Big Tech. D. Improve the levels of focus.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Artful thinking advances big tech.
B. Too much trust in AI harms our minds.
C. Physical actions better cognitive functions.
D. Mindfulness keeps us human in the age of AI.

With its silicone (硅酮) skin and blue color, Emo the robot looks more like a mechanical recreation of the Blue Man Group than a regular human. Until it smiles back at you.
Right now, in most humanoid robots, there’s a noticeable delay before they can smile back at a person, often because the robots are copying a person’s face in real time. “I think a lot of people interacting with a social robot for the first time are disappointed,” says Chaona Chen, a human-robot interaction researcher. “Improving robots’ expression in real time is important.”
To train Emo, the researchers first put it in front of a camera for a few hours. Like looking in a mirror would do for humans and their muscles, looking at itself in the camera while researchers ran random motor commands helped Emo learn the relationships between activating motors in its face and the expressions it created. Next, the researchers played videos of humans making facial expressions. By analyzing nearly 800 videos, Emo could learn what muscle movement indicated which expressions were about to occur. In thousands of further tests, the robot could correctly predict what facial expression a human would make and re-create it in step with the human more than 70 percent of the time.
The robot’s timely smiles could relieve some of the awkward feelings that delayed reactions in robots can cause. Emo’s blue skin, too, was designed to avoid the strange valley effect. If people think a robot is supposed to look like a human, “then they will always find some difference or become skeptical,” says Yuhang Hu, co-creator of Emo. Instead, with Emo’s rubbery blue face, people can “think about it as a new species. It doesn’t have to be a real person.”
The robot has no voice right now, but integrating generative AI chatbot features, like those of ChatGPT, into Emo could enable it to predict facial reactions from words in addition to human muscle movement. Once the robot could respond with words, it could be a better companion. “Maybe when I’m working at midnight, we can complain to each other about why there’s so much work or tell a few jokes,” says Hu.
12. What is the limitation of most current humanoid robots?
A. They can’t read facial expressions. B. They can’t interact with humans.
C. They can’t give back a timely expression. D. They don’t look like real human beings.
13. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. How Emo got its smile. B. Where Emo can work.
C. Why smiling matters for robots. D. What challenges the team faced.
14. Why does Emo have blue skin?
A. To reduce its delayed reactions. B. To set it apart from other robots.
C. To provide a sense of relaxation. D. To ease discomfort for people.
15. What can be expected of Emo in the future?
A. To assess work-related stress. B. To engage in friendly chats.
C. To conduct lab experiments. D. To speed up workplace automation.

I never imagined a summer volunteer program would reshape my understanding of “aid”. As a second-year medical student inspired by China’s aid stories, I eagerly signed up to assist a Chinese medical team in Kenya. But as the plane landed, excitement gave way to anxiety. With only basic knowledge and no clinical experience, how could I help?
The team was stationed in a small town with a modest hospital and limited supplies. My simple duties were organizing medicines and helping in the children’s ward (病房). The Chinese doctors, fluent in the local language, moved among patients with ease. I admired them yet felt an outsider.
That was where I met Makena, a six-year-old with huge, fearful eyes. She sat on a corner bed, her right arm and shoulder wrapped in clean bandages. She had severe burns and skin graft surgery (植皮手术) by a Chinese surgeon. Though healing, her scars would take long to fade. Makena never smiled and shrank back whenever I approached. A soft “Jambo” (hello) only made her turn to the wall. The rejection hurt, but it lit a quiet determination. Day after day, I greeted her gently. One afternoon, I left a tiny paper crane (纸鹤) on her bedside table. Her eyes followed it; one finger hesitantly touched its wing before pulling back.
One evening, Dr. Zhang said, “We’re visiting a remote village tomorrow. Makena’s grandmother lives there and is ill. Makena is recovering well. A short home visit might lift her spirits. Would you come and keep her company?” I nodded excitedly, picturing the paper cranes I’d folded.
The next morning, our vehicle bumped along the rough dirt road. Makena sat quietly by the window, holding her bandaged arm. I grasped the box of paper cranes on my knees, wondering if today I could finally reach her.

【答案】4. B 5. D 6. C 7. A
【解析】
【导语】作者讲述自己成年后学英语难改口音的经历,介绍母语印记的科学原理,告诉我们要认清自身局限、扬长避短。
【4题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中的“The unspoken accusation was clear: If I still sounded foreign, I wasn’t trying hard enough.(这种无声的指责很明显:如果我说话仍然有外国口音,就是我不够努力)”可知,作者的孩子们指责他没有努力改掉口音。
【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段“There is a term for the firm influence of one’s mother tongue: imprinting, an early, mostly unchangeable form of learning. (母语带来的这种根深蒂固的影响有一个专业术语:印记效应,这是一种早期形成、基本无法改变的学习形式)”可知,母语对人的语言习惯有早期且几乎不可改变的固定影响,因此划线词所在句子表示“生理条件早已决定了结果”。cast the die表示“决定结果”。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中的“Later, those circuits become less flexible, not because adults are lazy, but because gene expression changes with age.(后来,这些神经回路变得不那么灵活,不是因为成年人懒惰,而是因为基因表达会随着年龄发生变化)”可知,生理方面的变化导致成年人学外语很难没有口音。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Understanding them, we can work around them. The best kind of confidence is not the belief that you can do anything. It is the wisdom to know what you cannot do.(看清局限,我们就能扬长避短。最好的自信不是无所不能,而是认清自己做不到的事)”可知,作者想告诉我们要发挥自身优势,避开短板。
【答案】8. C 9. B 10. A 11. D

To think artfully means to solve problems using not just our brains, but also our hands, eyes, and ears, along with our emotions.(“巧妙思考”的哲学是避免这一陷阱的好方法。所谓巧妙思考,就是不仅用大脑,还用双手、双眼、双脚以及情感来解决问题。)”可知,巧妙思考能帮助人们避免过度依赖人工智能。
【9题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段“Accessing artful intelligence requires being mindful of how we think with our body, how we use our limbs (四肢), organs, and emotions to make sense of the world. Be mindful of all the different messages your body is sending you as well as the different roles and functions your bodily actions can play.(要获得艺术化的智能,需要留意我们如何用身体思考——我们如何运用四肢、器官和情绪来理解世界。请留心你的身体向你传递的所有不同信号,以及你的身体动作所能扮演的不同角色和发挥的不同功能。)”可知,第三段主要讲的是艺术性思维的方法。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第四段“If you want to find more freedom in this AI-filled world, improve your ability to mindfully shift your attention between different objects or levels of focus.(倘若你想在人工智能无处不在的世界里拥有更多自由,就要有意识地锻炼自己,在不同事物、不同专注层次之间灵活切换注意力。)”可知,作者建议在充满人工智能的世界里,我们应提升有意识地在不同事物或不同专注层级之间切换注意力的能力,即增强注意力的灵活性。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章最后一段“Artful thinking demands effortful mindfulness to ensure that what we do, what we hope to achieveby using these technological tools, will not weaken our humanity.(巧妙思考需要付出努力的正念,以确保我们使用这些技术工具所做的事、所希望达成的目标,不会削弱我们的人性。)”以及全文内容可知,文章开篇指出过度信任科技、忽视自身思维是AI时代的最大威胁,随后提出解决方案——巧妙思考(需结合专注练习),结尾进一步强调巧妙思考需要主动专注,以确保不削弱人性。选项D“Mindfulness keeps us human in the age of AI.(在AI时代,专注让我们保持人性。)”概括了全文内容,可作为最恰当的标题。

52. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Paragraph 2: When Makena held the paper crane and smiled at me for the first time, I realized the true meaning of China’s aid.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1: When we arrived at their small mud-brick house, Dr. Zhang got down to work immediately. He carefully checked Makena’s grandmother’s condition, gave targeted treatment and patiently instructed her on daily care. Left alone with Makena, I slowly took out the paper cranes I had prepared. I showed her different-shaped cranes and softly told her they stood for hope and healing. To my great joy, she no longer avoided me. She watched the lovely cranes attentively and reached out her trembling hand to touch them gently. The tense look on her face gradually faded away, replaced by quiet curiosity.
Paragraph 2: When Makena held the paper crane and smiled at me for the first time, I realized the true meaning of China’s aid. I used to believe aid was merely professional medical treatment to cure physical diseases. But this touching moment taught me that true aid is far more than that. It consists of endless patience, warm companionship and sincere love that heals spiritual wounds. Those selfless Chinese medical workers bring not only medical help but also warmth and hope to local people. This unforgettable experience completely changed my understanding of aid, inspiring me to stick to my medical journey and pass on this precious warmth in the future.
