A
Military works
Author
Introduction
The Art of War
Sun Tzu
(about 544-496 BC)
Sun Tzu, a well-known military strategist in ancient China, lived during the Spring and Autumn Period. It was in such a complex and war-torn environment that Sun Tzu, with his rich military experience and deep insights, penned it. It is the oldest military work in the world, covering 13 short chapters that explain how wars work, how to win battles, and how leaders should think. One famous idea is “to win without fighting”.
On War
Carl von Clausewitz
(1780-1831)
He was a German military thinker. His book says war is a way to force an enemy to do what you want. It also says war is closely linked to politics. It deeply explores the differences between tactics (战术) and strategy, and is of great significance to military professionals and political theorists.
The History of the Peloponnesian War
Thucydides
(about 460-400 BC)
It records the details of the war between the Peloponnesian League led by Sparta and the Athenian Empire. This book is of high historical value, objectively and comprehensively presenting the process and impact of the war, and is an important work for studying ancient Greek history.
The Art of War
Niccolò Machiavelli
(1469-1527)
He was an Italian writer from the Renaissance. His book talks about how to build and train an army, how to arrange soldiers in battle, and how governments should organize defenses. Many ideas were new for his time.
Naval Strategy
Alfred Thayer Mahan
(1840-1914)
He was an American naval (海军的) officer. His book was the first to study naval strategy. He argued that a strong navy is key to a country’s power, because controlling the seas helps protect trade and win wars.
1. Which book is significant for the research on ancient Greek history?
A. On War. B. Naval Strategy.
C. The Art of War by Sun Tzu. D. The History of the Peloponnesian War.
2. What do these two books with the same name have in common?
A. They both have 13 chapters. B. Both authors are experienced generals.
C. They were written around the same time period. D. Both books offer a unique understanding of war.
3. What is the key point of Mahan’s Naval Strategy?
A. War relies on complex politics. B. Navies should only protect coastlines.
C. A strong navy is necessary to a country. D. Trade is more important than military power.
根据第三部著作中“This book is of high historical value, objectively and comprehensively presenting the process and impact of the war, and is an important work for studying ancient Greek history.(这本书具有极高的历史价值,它客观且全面地展现了这场战争的过程及其影响,是研究古希腊历史的重要著作)”可知,The History of the Peloponnesian War对于研究古希腊的历史意义重大。
根据第一部分“It is the oldest military work in the world, covering 13 short chapters that explain how wars work, how to win battles, and how leaders should think. One famous idea is “to win without fighting”.(它是世界上现存最古老的军事著作,共分为13个简短章节,阐述了战争的运作方式、如何赢得战斗以及领导者应如何思考等问题。其中一个著名的观点是“不战而胜”)”以及第四部分“Many ideas were new for his time.(许多观点在当时都是前所未有的)”可知,两部书都对战争有独特的见解。故选D。
【3题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一本书的介绍中“He argued that a strong navy is key to a country’s power, because controlling the seas helps protect trade and win wars.(他指出,强大的海军是国家实力的关键所在,因为掌控海洋有助于保障贸易并赢得战争)”可知,Mahan在他的书中强调了海军对国家力量的重要性。故选C。
B
Anita Nowinska found her long-lost box of pastels (蜡笔) while digging through a worn suitcase, using only a candle for light as her power was cut off. “By candlelight I created my first flower painting,” she recalls. “As I painted, I found the deep sadness and pain I was feeling disappeared. That single act saved me, healed me and gave me a sense of purpose.”
It was not, as she puts it, the straightest of career paths. As an eight-year-old, Anita was invited to study alongside a master’s group. “It wouldn’t be allowed these days,” she says. Her mother, supportive, bought her oil paints; her father, less so, frequently destroyed her work. Later, Anita swapped (交换) paints for fast money. “It gave me a very nice lifestyle financially,” she says, “but it was soul-destroying.”
Anita set aside her art to run a recruitment (招聘) business in the growing Internet sector, but she didn’t remember being happy throughout those years. When the dot-com bubble (互联网泡沫) burst, many of her clients were hit hard. Despite covering expenses with her own savings, her business ultimately sank.
Today, she is known for her vast, immersive (沉浸式的) canvases of meadows (草地), wild grasses and flowers — paintings that ask you to stop, breathe and look. “I want the viewer to see what I see. That the smallest thing in nature has so much beauty and wonder.” She paints big because she wants you to feel enveloped, caught in the flicker of a slight wind.
Art, for Anita, is a celebration of nature. “Walking through the greenery is my meditation (冥想),” she says. “These days we call it mindfulness, but for me it’s just immersing myself in wonder.” Viewers seem to agree. One woman in a wheelchair once sat with Anita’s work for three hours, later admitting it was the first time in 20 years she had felt no pain. That, for Anita, is the point. “I can’t teach you how to paint,” she says. “I can only teach you how to look.” And her latest series, See Me I Bloom, carries that lesson into womanhood itself: “It’s about women truly valuing themselves — their strength, their wisdom, their determination. We create and nurture life — what could be more important?”
4. What can be known about Anita’s early relationship with art in Paragraph 2?
A. She received formal art education from a young age.
B. Her parents fully supported her artistic pursuits.
C. She prioritized financial success over art from the beginning.
D. Her artistic talent was recognized early but she faced obstacles.
5. How did Anita feel about her years in the recruitment business?
A. Rewarding yet stressful. B. Empty and meaningless.
C. Challenging yet enjoyable. D. Successful and content.
6. Why does Anita paint large canvases?
A. To follow the trend of contemporary art forms.
B. To showcase her unique pastel techniques.
C. To create a sense of complete immersion in nature.
D. To distract viewers from technical imperfections.
7. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. The Road to Business: Anita’s Career Change
B. Anita’s Art Story: How Painting Heals
C. The Commercial Value of Nature Paintings
D. From Financial Success to Artistic Failure
D 5. B 6. C 7. B
根据文章第二段“It was not, as she puts it, the straightest of career paths. As an eight-year-old, Anita was invited to study alongside a master’s group. “It wouldn’t be allowed these days,” she says. Her mother, supportive, bought her oil paints; her father, less so, frequently destroyed her work.(正如她所说,这条职业道路并非一帆风顺。八岁时,Anita被邀请与一群大师一起学习。“如今是不允许这样的了。”她说。她的母亲支持她,给她买了油画颜料;而她的父亲则不太支持,经常毁坏她的作品。)”可知,第二段提到Anita 8岁就被邀请与大师组一同学习,艺术天赋早被认可;但父亲常毁掉她的作品,这说明她追求艺术的路上存在阻碍。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段“Anita set aside her art to run a recruitment (招聘) business in the growing Internet sector, but she didn’t remember being happy throughout those years. ( Anita将艺术搁置一边,投身于互联网领域迅速发展的招聘业务中,但那些年她并没有一直感到快乐。)”可知,Anita对于自己在招聘行业工作的那些年一直未感到快乐,即感觉空虚、没有意义。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第四段中“She paints big because she wants you to feel enveloped, caught in the flicker of a slight wind.(她画得很大,是因为她希望观者能感受到被完全包围、沉浸在微风的摇曳之中。)”
根据文章第一段““By candlelight I created my first flower painting,” she recalls. “As I painted, I found the deep sadness and pain I was feeling disappeared. That single act saved me, healed me and gave me a sense of purpose.”(“借着烛光,我创作了第一幅花卉画作,”她回忆道,“当我作画时,我发现自己内心深处的悲伤与痛苦消失了。这个简单的举动拯救了我,治愈了我,并让我找到了人生的意义。”)”并通读全文可知,全文讲述Anita在人生低谷时通过绘画治愈自己,之后又用画作治愈他人、传递自然之美与女性力量的故事,故B项“Anita的艺术故事:绘画如何治愈”符合文章的标题。
C
The idea that smiling can make you feel happier has a long history. In 1872, Darwin mused (沉思) about whether an emotion that was expressed would be felt more intensely than one that was repressed. Early psychologists were musing about it in the 1880s. More than a hundred studies have been published on the topic. And it’s a trope(比喻)of pop wisdom: “Smile, though your heart is aching,” sang Nat King Cole in 1954. “You’ll find that life is still worthwhile, if you’ll just smile.”
In 2018, social psychologist Fritz Strack published a study that seemed to confirm that facial feedback was real. The researchers asked participants to hold a pen in their mouths in a position that forced them either to bare their teeth in a copy of a smile or to purse their lips around the pen. To make sure that no one was clued in to the researchers’ interest in smiles, the experimenters told participants that they were exploring how people with physical disabilities might write or perform other ordinary tasks.
When both groups were shown a set of newspaper comics — specifically, illustrations from Gary Larson’s The Far Side — the teeth-barers rated the images as funnier than the lip-pursers did. This was a big deal for the facial feedback hypothesis (假设): Even though participants weren’t thinking about smiling or their mood, just moving their face into a smile-like shape seemed to affect their emotions. And so the finding made its way into psychology textbooks and countless news headlines. Decades of confirmation followed, as researchers published other experiments that also showed support for the facial feedback hypothesis. But in 2025, all at once, 17 labs failed to repeat the pen study.
8. What does the underlined word “repressed” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. Tolerated. B. Controlled. C. Appreciated. D. Recognized.
9. What can we learn from the second paragraph?
A. Researchers didn’t share their true purpose.
B. Participants were physically disabled.
C. Participants were confused about the experiment.
D. Researchers didn’t show their facial feedback.
10. What’s the author’s attitude towards the result of the experiment?
A. Objective. B. Supportive. C. Doubtful. D. Critical.
11. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. How to make yourself feel happier easily.
B. Darwin’s thoughts about expressed emotions.
C. The research process of facial feedback hypothesis.
D. Comics’ influence on people’s mood.
B 9. A 10. A 11. C
根据第一段中的“In 1872, Darwin mused (沉思) about whether an emotion that was expressed would be felt more intensely than one that was repressed.(1872年,达尔文思索,一种被表露出来的情绪是否会比一种repressed情绪感受得更强烈。)” Controlled(控制的)符合语境。
根据第二段中的“To make sure that no one was clued in to the researchers’ interest in smiles, the experimenters told participants that they were exploring how people with physical disabilities might write or perform other ordinary tasks.(为确保没人察觉研究者研究微笑的真实目的,实验人员谎称是研究残障人士书写和日常活动的方式。)”
根据第二段“In 2018, social psychologist Fritz Strack published a study that seemed to confirm that facial feedback was real.(2018 年,社会心理学家弗里茨・施特拉克发表了一项研究,该研究似乎证实面部反馈效应真实存在)”和第三段“This was a big deal for the facial feedback hypothesis(假设)(这对于面部反馈假说而言意义重大)”以及最后一段“Decades of confirmation followed(此后数十年间,不断有研究佐证这一理论)”以及“But in 2025, all at once, 17 labs failed to repeat the pen study.(但在 2025 年,17 家实验室同步开展重复实验,全都未能复刻这项握笔实验。)”
D
For years, sugar has been labeled a primary cause behind the global rise in diabetes (糖尿病), especially type 2 diabetes (T2D). However, groundbreaking research from Brigham Young University challenges this broad assumption. A large-scale study reveals a crucial detail: the source and form of sugar matter significantly when it comes to diabetes risk.
The findings paint a contrasting picture. On one hand, sugars consumed in liquid form — specifically through sugar-sweetened drinks like soda and even 100% fruit juice — were consistently linked to a sharply increased risk of developing T2D. On the other hand, sugars naturally present in or added to solid, nutrient-dense whole foods (such as whole fruits, dairy products, or whole grains) appeared to be far less harmful or potentially even protective.
Why is there such a big difference? Researchers point to metabolism Liquid sugars from drinks act like isolated sugar floods entering the system. They cause rapid and large jumps in blood sugar, overwhelming the liver. This metabolic disruption leads to increased liver fat and insulin resistance — key factors in T2D development. By contrast, sugars added to solid foods are released much more slowly into the bloodstream. The fiber, fat, protein, and other beneficial nutrients naturally accompanying the sugar in these whole foods act as buffers, reducing the glycemic (血糖的) impact and preventing the liver from being overloaded.
The study delivers a clear warning about fruit juice. Despite containing some vitamins, its high concentration of liquid sugar makes it a poor substitute for whole fruit. The vital fiber present in whole fruit, crucial for moderating blood sugar response, is largely missing in juice.
“This study emphasizes the need for even stricter recommendations for liquid sugars such as those in sugar-sweetened drinks and fruit juice, as they appear to harmfully associate with metabolic health,” said Della Corte, one of the lead researchers. “Rather than criticizing all added sugars, future dietary guidelines might consider the different effects of sugar based on its source and form.”
12. Which form of sugar consumption brings a higher T2D risk?
A. Sugar naturally found in whole fruits.
B. Sugar from whole grains and dairy products.
C. Sugar present in various liquid drinks.
D. Sugar added to nutrient-dense solid foods.
13. What does Paragraph 3 focus on?
A. The benefits of sugar metabolism. B. The reasons for sugar metabolism.
C. The significance of sugar metabolism. D. The differences in sugar metabolism.
14. To lower the risk of T2D, which practice is most likely supported by the study?
A. Replacing soda drinks with whole fruits.
B. Avoiding dairy products containing sugar.
C. Consuming as much fiber and fat as possible.
D. Increasing consumption of 100% fruit juice.
15. What can be inferred from Della Corte’s statement about future dietary guidelines?
A. They should remove fruit juice from recommendations.
B. They should reconsider the impact of sugar on metabolism.
C. They should criticize sugars regardless of different effects.
D. They should not adopt a one-size-fits-all approach to sugar.
C 13. D 14. A 15. D
根据文章第二段中的“On one hand, sugars consumed in liquid form — specifically through sugar-sweetened drinks like soda and even 100% fruit juice — were consistently linked to a sharply increased risk of developing T2D. (一方面,以液体形式摄入的糖——特别是通过苏打水甚至100%纯果汁等含糖饮料——与患2型糖尿病的风险急剧增加有关)”可知,各种液体饮料中的糖会带来更高的2型糖尿病风险。故选C。
【13题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第三段中的“Why is there such a big difference? Researchers point to metabolism (新陈代谢). Liquid sugars from drinks act like isolated sugar floods entering the system. They cause rapid and large jumps in blood sugar, overwhelming the liver. This metabolic disruption leads to increased liver fat and insulin resistance — key factors in T2D development. By contrast, sugars added to solid foods are released much more slowly into the bloodstream. The fiber, fat, protein, and other beneficial nutrients naturally accompanying the sugar in these whole foods act as buffers, reducing the glycemic (血糖的) impact and preventing the liver from being overloaded.(为何二者会存在如此巨大的差异?
根据文章第二段中的“The findings paint a contrasting picture. On one hand, sugars consumed in liquid form — specifically through sugar-sweetened drinks like soda and even 100% fruit juice — were consistently linked to a sharply increased risk of developing T2D. On the other hand, sugars naturally present in or added to solid, nutrient-dense whole foods (such as whole fruits, dairy products, or whole grains) appeared to be far less harmful or potentially even protective.(研究得出了两种截然不同的结果。
根据文章最后一段中的“Rather than criticizing all added sugars, future dietary guidelines might consider the different effects of sugar based on its source and form. (未来的饮食指南不应批评所有添加糖,而应考虑基于糖的来源和形式的不同影响)”可知,未来的饮食指南应考虑基于糖的来源和形式的不同影响,可以推断出,未来的饮食指南不应该对所有糖采取一刀切的方法,而应区别对待。

Armed with magnifying glasses and reference books, we were divided into small groups to find and record as many organisms as possible within the limited time. Our group spotted many species, including various plants, ants, and spiders. The activity ended with a quick presentation of our findings.
This experience not only deepened our understanding of biodiversity but also made us realize that nature is full of wonders waiting to be found.

Thanksgiving Day was just around the corner, and as a first-grade teacher, I was excited to give my class a heartfelt homework: draw a picture of something they were grateful for. I expected to see drawings of turkeys and pumpkin pictures, symbols of the holiday they might enjoy.
Most of the children did draw exactly that — scenes of feasts and family gatherings. Bright colours filled their pages, showing smiling families around dinner tables laden with food. But among this festive atmosphere, there was Lucas, a quiet and sad boy who often stayed by my side while others played at recess (大课间).
Lucas was different from the other children. His eyes, always filled with a sadness I could only guess at, seemed to carry the weight of the world. I often found him standing close to me during recess, his small hand sometimes slipping into mine as we watched the other children play. “Take my hand, Lucas, we’ll go outside,” I’d say gently, and he’d follow, his trust obvious in his grip (紧握).
When it was Lucas’s turn to share his drawing, he held up his paper, showing a big hand. Just a hand, with nothing else around it. The simplicity of it stirred the imagination of his classmates. Whose hand could it be?
One child guessed it was the hand of a farmer, explaining that farmers raise turkeys and provide food. Another suggested it was the hand of a police officer, symbolizing protection and care. The discussion went on and on, each child offering a different interpretation (解读).
As the children moved on to other assignments, the image of the hand remained in my mind. I couldn’t help but feel there was something more to Lucas’s drawing, something deeper and more personal. I approached his desk, my heart heavy with curiosity and concern. “Whose hand is it, Lucas?” I asked softly.

At the next recess, I held out my hand to Lucas the moment the bell rang.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】“It’s yours, Miss White,” he whispered, looking away shyly. My heart skipped a beat as I stared at the simple drawing of the hand. I thought back to all the times I’d held his hand during recess, guiding him outside or just standing with him as he watched the other kids play. Lucas slowly turned his head up, his eyes glistening with tears. “You’re the only one who holds my hand and talks to me,” he said quietly. I knelt down, gently taking his small hand in mine, and told him how much he meant to me. His shy smile lit up his face, a rare sight that warmed my heart instantly.
At the next recess, I held out my hand to Lucas the moment the bell rang. He hesitated for a second before placing his hand in mine, his grip firm and trusting. I led him to the playground, where some kids were playing games. I encouraged him to join in, and with my hand still in his, he walked toward the group. When a girl invited him to play tag, he looked at me for encouragement. I nodded, and he let go of my hand, running off with a laugh. Watching him play happily, I knew that small act of holding hands had become a bridge of warmth and belonging for him.

A
Military works

2. What do these two books with the same name have in common?
