专题08 选词填空 (一) (25-26高二上·上海闵行中学·期中)Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need. A. cultivating   B. delayers   C. temptation   D. effectively   E. motivational   F. energized G. scheduling   H. favorable   I. identify   J. vision   K. monitored It is tempting, when your shiny New Year’s resolutions start to collapse, to tell yourself that self-control simply isn’t your strong point. “Oh well,” you might say, surrendering to the desire for a large glass of beer. “No willpower, that’s my problem.” But, according to a body of scientific research, willpower is not a talent that a lucky few are born with. It is a skill to be practised. “Willpower is a dynamic fluctuation resource.” explains Frank Ryan, consultant clinical psychologist and author of Willpower for dummies. “Our level of willpower fluctuates according to our motivation in any given situation. Everybody can learn to use their willpower more 1 .” Even if you are not trying to turn over a new leaf for the new year, 2 willpower is a good idea, as the psychologist Walter Mischel demonstrated in the 1960s and 70s. In his famous study, a group of four-year-olds were offered the choice of one sweet treat now, or two if they could wait 15 minutes. Their performance was then 3 into adulthood. The “high 4 ” went on to achieve greater academic success, better health and lower divorce rates. “To maximize our chances of sticking to resolutions,” Ryan says, “we should 5 our willpower profile. For example: some people are more impulsive than others. That does come down to personality.” Introverts tend to get 6 by thoughts and ideas. So, if that’s you, you should find it easier to get motivated by an inner 7 than extroverts who get fired up by people and social approval. For introverts, 8 time to reflect on your progress, such as keeping a diary can be helpful. For extroverts, signing up for a group such as Parkrun or Weight Watchers where everyone has common goal can help you to strengthen your resolve, as can sharing even small progress with others. “You need to learn the core skills to cope with triggers and cues that activate your reward-seeking response,” Ryan adds. “It’s about coping with 9 which often comes from the environment, the people, places or things that act as 10 magnets to challenge your willpower.” In other words, if you are trying to avoid cake, it is probably best to find a route home that serves the artisanal doughnuts. 【答案】1. Each word can be used only once. Note that there is one word more than you need. A. universal B. assess C. evenly D. glorifies E. genuine F. fuels G. perspective H. prioritize I. rarely J. approach K. arises Every fall, university students across the country prepare themselves for the same academic storm: midterms. Libraries fill up, coffee consumption skyrockets and the collective stress on campus mounts. But as another testing season passes, a question 1 : are midterms helping students learn, or are they just another outdated academic tradition that does more harm than good? In an informal study of about 30 University of Idaho students from various majors and years, a small portion of students defended midterms. But the overwhelming (压倒性的) majority voiced frustration. This mix of opinions highlights a larger truth: while midterms were designed to 2 understanding and encourage consistent study habits, the reality is that they often fail to achieve those goals. Instead, they’ve become a ritual that 3 stress and burnout rather than meaningful learning. Let’s start with the minority view, those who actually appreciate midterms. They said that midterms give them a checkpoint in their education. This 4 reflects the original purpose of midterms: to provide both students and professors with feedback halfway through the semester. Ideally, a midterm helps students identify their weak areas, while giving instructors insight into how well their teaching methods are working. However, this feeling is far from 5 . For most students, midterms feel less like a helpful progress check and more like a punishment. And that’s the heart of the issue. Midterms often just increase stress to unhealthy levels. When every class demands a major exam within the same week period, students are stretched thin and tend to 6 test performance over true understanding. Another common complaint is that midterms 7 reflect real learning. Memorizing formulas, flashcards or historical dates might yield a good grade, but it doesn’t guarantee long-term comprehension. The problem isn’t that exams are bad. Students should absolutely be evaluated on what they know. But the way we test that knowledge needs to change. Many professors have started to use quizzes that reduce pressure while still providing feedback throughout the semester. This 8 is more in line with how real-world learning works: increasing gradually, reflective and applied. Midterms don’t have to disappear completely, but they do need to be changed. If they are going to continue, they should be reimagined as tools for learning rather than reasons for stress. That means designing exams that test understanding instead of memorization, spreading assignments more 9 throughout the semester and providing flexible options for students who learn differently. Universities also need to address the culture surrounding midterms, one that 10 all-nighters, caffeine overloads and burnout as signs of dedication. Academic strictness does not have to mean academic suffering. 【答案】1. K 2. B 3. F 4. G 5. A 6. H 7. I 8. J 9. C 10. This principle tries to make public goods similar to 1 goods. It seems reasonable that a person who often goes to the movies pays more in 2 for movie tickets than a person who rarely goes. And 3 a person who gets great benefit from a public good should pay more for it than a person who gets little benefit. The gasoline tax, for instance, is sometimes 4 under the benefits principle. In some states, revenues (收益) from the gasoline tax are used to build and 5 roads. Because those who buy gasoline are the same people who use the roads, the gasoline tax might be viewed as a 6 way to pay this government service. The benefits principle can also be used to 7 that wealthy citizens should pay higher taxes than poorer ones, simply because the wealthy benefit more from public services. Consider, for example, the benefits of police protection from theft. Citizens with much to protect get greater benefit from the police than those with less to protect. It directs to the light when darkness is upon us; it supplies incentives to action and turns ideas into realities. It fires the imagination, and this is essential, for one must envision the future and behave as if it were a fact before it can 1 . It is faith that lights us into sustaining realities beyond those perceived by the 2 senses. Faith never despairs. Confronted with defeat, faith still lays up unseen treasures. Let the circumstances be ever so horrible, to choose faith is to create. Defeat is nothing to be 3 of; it is routine in digging the gold of one’s personality. I have known people of faith who were defeated times without number and with whom I never associated failure. To succeed and remain mediocre is despicable. Defeat is simply a signal to 4 onward and a gateway to mental adventure that makes dull days exciting and causes the blood to sing. That is the meaning of the saying that victory is great, but defeat, if necessary, is greater. Faith is mental 5 of what is good, together with a steady endeavor to live it despite all obstacles. I say obstacles because everything that is easy was once difficult. Ease is like rest, and like rest it can become stagnation. Without resistance, the bodily powers shrivel. Would the infant ever learn to walk or talk if it did not struggle? Serious harm, I am afraid, has been done to our generation by fostering the idea that they would live secure in a 6 order of things. It has tended to weaken their imagination and unfit them for independent steering of their destinies. Before it is too late, they must learn and teach others that only by brave acceptance of change and all-time 7 can they rise to the height of superlative responsibility. That is what the heroes of the nineteenth century did. They were not content to meet immediate danger in a self-denying manner. They went on from there and tore loose from a 8 , a stale custom, and an out-of-date maxim. So can we. Security is mostly a superstition. It does not 9 in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the longer run than outright exposure. The fearful are caught as often as the bold. Faith alone defends. Life is either a 10 adventure or nothing. To keep our faces toward change and behave like free spirits in the presence of fate is strength undefeatable. 【答案】1. F 2. C 3. G 4. Each word can only be used once. Note that for each passage there is ONE WORD MORE than you need. A. thin   B. assumes   C. intensifies   D. evenly   E. universal   F. highlights   G. tangible H. halfway   I. consistent   J. lingers   K. overwhelming Study, stress, repeat Every fall, university students across the country brace themselves for the same academic storm: midterms. Libraries fill up, coffee consumption skyrockets and the collective stress on campus becomes almost 1 . But as another testing season passes, a question 2 : are midterms helping students learn, or are they just another outdated academic tradition that does more harm than good? In an informal poll of about 30 University of Idaho students from various majors and years, a small portion of students defended midterms, saying they help gauge what they’ve learned and where they need to improve. But the 3 majority voiced frustration, describing midterms as “pointless,” “stressful” and “unnecessary pressure” that often hurts more than it helps. This mix of opinions 4 a larger truth: while midterms were designed to assess understanding and encourage 5 study habits, the reality is that they often fail to achieve those goals. Instead, they’ve become a high-stakes ritual that fuels stress and burnout rather than meaningful learning. Let’s start with the minority view, those who actually appreciate midterms. A few students admitted that, as much as they dread the exams, they see the value in them. They said that midterms give them a checkpoint in their education. This perspective reflects the original purpose of midterms: to provide both students and professors with feedback 6 through the semester. Ideally, a midterm helps students identify their weak areas, allowing them to adjust their study habits before the end of the term. It also gives instructors insight into how well their teaching methods are working. There’s also the argument that midterms build academic discipline. By forcing students to review material mid-semester, they can prevent last-minute cramming at the end. Some students even find that the stress, while unpleasant, motivates them to stay engaged. However, this sentiment is far from 7 . For most students, midterms feel less like a helpful progress check and more like a punishment. Many students describe midterms as one of the most stressful parts of college life. They talked about how, with all the other projects and assignments that professors assign during midterms week, an exam on top of all of that is too much. And that’s the heart of the issue. For all the talk about midterms fostering discipline, they often just amplify stress to unhealthy levels. A lot of stress can significantly impact mental health, leading to sleep deprivation, anxiety and even depression. When every class demands a major exam within the same week period, students are stretched 8 and tend to prioritize test performance over genuine understanding. Another common complaint is that midterms rarely reflect real learning. Memorizing formulas, flashcards or historical dates might yield a good grade, but it doesn’t guarantee long-term comprehension. A lot of students still procrastinate and wait until the last minute to study, spending all night trying to understand the material. This cycle of cramming and forgetting isn’t real education. Instead of promoting critical thinking or mastery, midterms can turn learning into a competition of who can endure the most pressure. The problem isn’t that exams are bad. Students should absolutely be evaluated on what they know. But the way we test that knowledge needs to change. Midterms belong to the traditional system that 9 exams are the best measure of knowledge, an idea that feels outdated in an age when education is increasingly about application, collaboration and creativity. Midterms don’t have to disappear completely, but they do need to be changed. If they are going to continue, they should be reimagined as tools for learning rather than reasons for stress. That means designing exams that test understanding instead of memorization, spreading assignments more 10 throughout the semester and providing flexible options for students who learn differently. 【答案】1. At 9. 30am on October 19th the pair used a truck-mounted ladder to break in to the Louvre; they left the same way, before escaping on scooters with two accomplices. In their 2 they dropped one looted piece. The heist 3 at the heart of the French state — and of the art world. With nearly 9m visitors in 2024, the Louvre is the most popular museum anywhere. A former royal palace in the historic centre of Paris, it is made up of over 400 galleries, displaying 35,000 works of art. Spanning civilisations from Mesopotamia (美索不达米亚) to Europe, the collection also links France’s royal and imperial past with its republic an present. President Emmanuel Macron called the heist an attack on“our history”. All of the eight items seized, described as“priceless” by French officials, were part of the national collection of crown jewels. Kept in the museum’s most luxurious gilded gallery, they include the emerald-studded necklace and earrings given by Napoleon to Marie-Louise for their wedding in 1810, and a tiara made up of 212 pearls, 1,998 diamonds and 992 rose-cut diamonds belonging to the Empress Eugenie, Napoleon III’s wife. The thieves also 4 a necklace, an earring and a tiara from the sapphire collection. The Louvre has been targeted before — most famously in 1911, when the“Mona Lisa” was stolen — but not on this 5 . Arthur Brand, a Dutch specialist in art theft, compares the heist to the snatching of 13 works of art, including Vermeer’s“The Concert” and Rembrandt’s“Christ in the Storm on the Sea of Galilee”, from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston in 1990. Until now Europe’s biggest post-war museum theft was in Amsterdam in 1991, when criminals made off with 20 paintings including Van Gogh’s “The Potato Eaters”. But “the Louvre is the ultimate heist,” says Mr Brand. “Nobody thought anybody would dare to steal from the Louvre.” The brazenness is worthy of a Hollywood 6 . Indeed in“Lupin”, a hit French crime series, the protagonist 7 a diamond necklace once owned by Marie Antoinette from the museum. In a clever twist, he later reveals that the stolen necklace is actually a replica. In reality, museum theft is surprisingly common. France has witnessed a number of recent heists from smaller museums. An analysis of 40 museum thefts between 1990 and 2022 by Sandra Clopes and Marc Balcells, published in April, classifies five main types of raid. The most common, accounting for 15 of the heists, is a stealth raid: thieves make off with artworks without alerting security agents. “Smash-and-grab” raids, like the one at the Louvre, are the second-most common, accounting for 11 of those analysed. Over half the items taken are paintings; only 4% are jewellery. Less than half are 8 . The Louvre thieves, says an art valuer in Paris, will dismantle the pieces, sell the gold and recut the precious stones. There is no market, he says, for the items themselves. In Paris, minds are now focusing on what went wrong and how to stop it happening again. Gerald Darmanin, the justice minister, said the raid had given“France a dreadful image”. That a truck could be parked outside the Louvre on a busy street on a Sunday morning without raising suspicion is worrying enough; that the thieves could make off with crown jewels despite setting off alarms poses serious questions about the museum’s security. The “trick is to slow thieves down”, says Mr Brand. In most cases, note Ms Clopes and Mr Balcells,“thieves were faster stealing the pieces than the sensors alerting security forces.” In a leaked report France’s national auditor points to“persistent” 9 in deploying modern security equipment in the Louvre. Laurence des Cars, the museum’s director, raised the problem when she took over in 2021. But, as in all public museums, budgets are tight. Rachida Dati, France’s culture minister, talked this week of “40 years of neglect”. Nobody wants to accept responsibility, but the political pressure is 10 for a head to roll. 【答案】1. J 2. E 3. I 4. It’s in newspapers, on TV, in fashion, in stadiums, and in pubs. It’s rather 1 , really. But it’s how we have evolved as a social species. In-groups and out-groups were necessary as we emerged from the primitive era, when resources were 2 . And we think they’re necessary now: economic inequality, mass migration, climate change-these things are pushing people together in a possibly uncomfortable way. When it comes to higher-order solutions, I’ll leave the politics to the politicians and instead attempt to dispassionately hide behind my specialist subject, psychology. The way that people like me have historically 3 to reduce the conflict between in-groups and out-groups is to force them to sit together in a room and have a chat. The 4 of this approach is “intergroup contact theory” from the late Gordon Allport. He argued that this breaks down stereotypes (固定的想法) and prejudices, and reduces discrimination. The research that flowed from this all pointed to the same thing: mixing people up mostly makes them feel better about the other group. And moving forward, those positive memories facilitate future interactions between the two groups. However, simply bringing people together is not always enough. The conditions under which these interactions occur are crucial for the success of reducing in-group and out-group conflicts. Allport identified several key factors that enhance the 5 of intergroup contact: equal status among group members, common goals, intergroup cooperation, and support from authorities, law, or customs. When these conditions are 6 , the interactions are more likely to lead to positive outcomes. Without these supportive conditions, 7 contact might even strengthen negative stereotypes. Moreover, modern approaches to reducing intergroup conflict use digital platforms and social media to promote intergroup contact. Virtual environments can provide safe places for people from different backgrounds to talk and work together, even if they are not 8 together. As our society becomes increasingly 9 , making good use of both face-to-face and digital interactions will be essential in creating a more 10 and harmonious world. 【答案】1. D 2. J 3. K 4. C 5. A 6. First 1 in Germany in 1899 by Johan Vaaler (1866 — 1910), a Norwegian inventor, the humble paperclip remains necessary. The 2 of the paperclip lies in its simplicity. This little bit of folded metal does its job well enough and, besides, can be used as a(n) 3 miniature (微型的) tool, for shaping desk-top animals, cleaning fingernails, making miniature buildings, or simply as something to play with in times of stress. According to a survey conducted by Lloyds Bank some while ago, of every 100,000 paperclips made in the United States, 19,143 are used as poker chips, 17,200 hold clothing together, 15,556 are 4 and lost, 14,163 are absent-mindedly destroyed during telephone calls, 8,504 clean pipes and nails, while 5,434 serve as stand-in toothpicks. There are several different types of paperclips but the one many readers will have in mind — and in drawers of desks at home and at work — is the 5 double U-shaped Gem’s clip, made originally by Gem Manufacturing Ltd. This British company had probably been making paperclips for several years before Johan Vaaler created his 6 , but it hadn’t thought of taking out of a patent as the Norwegian did — not that Vaaler made any money out of his invention. Even so, in recent years a giant paperclip has been erected outside Oslo in Vaaler’s 7 . There is, though, a perfectly 8 reason for this seemingly made moment in the world of public art. During the Second World War, when Norwegians were 9 to display national symbols, they began to wear paperclips on their clothes. Not only was it, in their minds, a Norwegian invention but it symbolized the idea of holding on together. From a simple tool to a national symbol of 10 the paperclip is a small triumph of everyday design. An example of the Gem clip is even held in the collections of New York’s Museum of Modern Art. 【答案】1. G 2. E 3. A 4. B 5. C 6. K 7. F 8. J 9. D 10. They have also 1 neighboring farmers to restore 80 ponds within a three-mile radius near Braintree. Ponds that were dried up or 2 have been opened to sunlight and dug out. (三) (25-26高二上·上海民办文绮中学·期中)Directions: Fill in each blank with a proper word chosen from the box. Analysts said the 1 of China’s leading blind box toy retailer had “far exceeded market expectations”. Pop Mart has millions of young fans who may not earn a lot but seem generous spenders on small toys that offer them emotional and social value. Products like blind box toys, odd accessories and decorative items have become highly 2 , especially among young people. Such items, often not necessarily 3 , serve as sources of comfort, entertainment or self-expression. The blind box economy is based on the sale of products in packaging that hides the item’s appearance or specific design, creating a sense of mystery that is only 4 on opening. There is also a 5 element of possibly acquiring a rare item with a higher potential resale value. A small Pop Mart blind box is normally 6 between 69 and 79 yuan (US11) and larger ones can sell for several thousand yuan. Cao Zuo, a university student in Shanghai who is a fan of Pop Mart’s toys, said that people who continue to buy blind boxes are “paying for love” as they contain “ 7 ” products that “provide a kind of mental satisfaction”. In this sense, China’s Gen Z are seeking solace through “emotional consumption”. “Young people also tend to be impulse buyers with 8 spending habits and dare to take unknown risks,” she said. Mo Daiqing, a senior analyst at the China E-Commerce Research Centre, said despite their relatively high prices, such items are still affordable to most people because they are not frequently consumed daily 9 . “People are also focusing more on the shopping experience, which some of the brands, such as Jellycat, do quite well, making consumers feel happy and relaxed,” she added. In fact, such toys sold in blind boxes are not only targeted at children, but adults as well. This allows family visitors to operate things the “ 3 ” way: dialing a desired temperature on the thermostat (恒温器), flicking the lights on, and pressing the “on” button to watch news. Commercials promise a future of effortless control and entertainment at our fingertips or voice command. The term “influencer” may seem like a fairly new addition to our word bank, but first uses date back to the 1660s. Still, its 1 to social media — relatively new in its own right — is a more recent phenomenon. While the “very first” commercial influencer may be lost somewhere in the records of history, product packaging and magazine adverts of the past provide a breadcrumb trail (蛛丝马迹) that 2 the early evolution of influencer marketing. From the Marlboro Man, to Santa Claus, imaginary characters have offered tried and true ways to establish a personalized connection between products and consumers. Eventually, these influential spokespersons led to the modern social media influencer — someone who has built a sizable 3 across one or more social media channels. Along with differences in size and reach, the channels, content formats, and categories will also shape the influencer definition to 4 degrees. Throughout the evolution of social media, its variety of platforms have continually changed in 5 to user behavior and expectations. Whether it’s YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, or Twitch, these social media channels offer influencers different ways to create, publish, and consume content, as well as 6 an audience. Thus, the influencer definition is 7 to change with the ever-changing social media scene, and all variables must be taken into consideration when defining social media influencers. Today, asking for the definition of an influencer — or even influencer marketing — could result in a large number of different answers. However, at their core, influencers are social media personalities with loyal audiences that they 8 by sharing content that inspires, entertains, informs, and connects them with their followers. This direct line of communication 9 influencers to generate social conversations, drive engagement, and ultimately, set trends among a receptive and socially wise audience. Social media influencers are generally categorized by two main tiers — micro- and macro- influencers. While micro-influencers have followings between 10,000 to 50,000, macro-influencers 10 audiences between 500,000 to 1 million. But these categories can be broken down even further to include the wide range of social media influencers. They deserve more out of life than to be victims in our failed efforts to coexist. Just as we appreciate individuality in people, so too much we value it in other animals. On Oct. 1, 2025, Jane Goodall passed away. Much of her amazing life is 2 in the legacy she leaves behind. In Colorado, Governor Jared Polis immediately proclaimed Oct. 1, 2025, as Jane Goodall Day. Her 3 will surely be everlasting. To share personal reflections on her life and legacy, we turn to two of her long-time collaborators: Marc, a wildlife filmmaker and producer who worked with Jane for over 30 years, and Marlon, a science writer and editor who helped shape Jane’s later writings and global messaging. Marc: Jane’s pioneering research 4 our understanding of chimpanzees. In November 1960, she observed David Greybeard making and using a tool by 5 leaves from a straw stick to extract termites (白蚁). This groundbreaking observation was initially met with doubts until she provided video evidence. Now we must redefine tool, redefine Man, or accept chimpanzees as humans. Jane also named the chimpanzees she observed, for which she was strongly criticized. “I was told that naming animals is too 6 ,” she recalled, “Individual differences in personalities 7 amounted to ‘noise in the system.’” Large amounts of subsequent research have shown how wrong our critics were. Marlon: As a strong believer in the power of stories, I had long looked up to Goodall as a(n) 8 encyclopedia for the natural world. At 9. 30am on October 19th the pair used a truck-mounted ladder to break in to the Louvre; they left the same way, before escaping on scooters with two accomplices.
