Music is much more than simple entertainment. Scientific studies show that music influences our bodies, minds and social culture in many surprising ways.
First, music influences our feelings. Soft pieces that have slow beats can calm nervous people down, while lively music that carries strong rhythms can cheer us up when we feel upset. Hospitals around the world use gentle music to reduce patients’ stress before small operations.
Besides feelings, music is good for brain development. Students who learn to play instruments often do better in memory-related tasks. When people listen to or create music, many different parts of the brain become active. It is not only for talented people but for every common person.
What’s more, music is an important carrier of culture. Every nation has special music that shows its own history and local life. Folk music that is passed down from old times keeps old stories alive. Playing a musical instrument is not only fun, but it might also be helpful to our brains (脑)! Scientists are doing a study with people aged 40 and older to see how playing music affects brain health. They have looked at results from over 1,000 adults and found that playing an instrument or singing can improve their memory and cognitive speed (认知速度).
Anne Corbett, a researcher from the University of Exeter, says that being musical could help keep our brains strong as we get older. She believes musical education is important and we should let older adults return to music in later life.
Stuart Douglas, a 78-year-old who plays the accordion, shared his story. He learned to play the accordion as a boy and has been playing it all his life. He now performs with a band. He sees how music helps people with memory problems and believes that continuing with music into older age plays an important role in keeping brains healthy.
The idea for this study came from Gaia Vetere, a medical student who loves playing the piano. “I am very interested in researching the relationship between music and cognition. Doing the study is challenging, but I have learned a lot and it’s truly a meaningful experience,” she said.

Music can make us feel many different things. Some songs make us feel happy, while others make us feel sad or calm. Music can also remind us of special times in our lives. For example, we might remember songs that played on our birthdays. The songs become special because they’re connected to our feelings and memories.
But music doesn’t just help us remember. Scientists think it might also change how we remember things. In a study, researchers asked people to read some short stories. These stories were not happy or sad—they were just normal. The next day, the people listened to happy music, sad music, or no music while thinking about the stories again. While this happened, a machine called an MRI was used to see how their brains worked.
On the third day, the people were asked to remember the same stories again, but without any music. The scientists wanted to know if the music had changed what people remembered. And it did. When people listened to happy music, they remembered the stories in a happier way. When they listened to sad music, they remembered the stories as sadder ones. Even without music, their memories stayed changed.
Music made certain parts of the brain more active. These parts help us feel emotions (情绪) and remember things. This means music doesn’t just help us remember—it changes the memory itself.
10.What’s shown about music and memories according to the text?
A.Music only helps people forget bad things.
B.Music always brings back old memories.
C.Music makes stories harder to understand.
D.Music can change how we feel about the past events.

C.To teach how to use brain machines.
D.To express people should read more stories.

Have you ever wondered why a sad song can make you cry, or why a fast beat makes you want to move? The answer lies in how music affects your brain. Scientists have discovered that music is one of the few things that can activate almost every part of the human brain at the same time.
When you listen to a song you like, your brain releases dopamine—the same chemical that makes you feel happy when you eat your favourite food or get a good grade. This is why music can change your mood so quickly. If you’re feeling down, an upbeat song can lift your spirits in just a few minutes. If you’re anxious before an exam, a slow and calm piece can slow your heartbeat and help you relax.
Music also has a strong connection to memory. Have you ever heard a song on the radio and suddenly remembered something that happened years ago? That’s because the part of the brain that processes music is close to the part that stores memories. This is why people with memory loss, like Alzheimer’s patients, can sometimes remember songs from their childhood even when they can’t remember the names of their family members.
For teenagers, music is especially powerful. The teenage brain is still developing, and it’s more sensitive to emotions than an adult brain. This means the music you listen to now might have a bigger effect on you than it will when you’re older. Choosing music that makes you feel good, rather than music with angry or sad messages, can help you build a more positive mindset.
So the next time someone tells you to turn down your music, you can tell them you’re not just having fun—you’re taking care of your brain!
13.What chemical does the brain release when you listen to a song you like?
A.Adrenaline. B.Dopamine. C.Melatonin. D.Serotonin.
14.According to the text, why can music help Alzheimer’s patients?
A.Because it makes them dance. B.Because it helps them remember things.
C.Because it cures their illness. D.Because it makes them sleep better.
15.How does the writer explain the connection between music and memory?
A.By telling a personal story. B.By asking the reader questions.
C.By giving a scientific explanation. D.By listing numbers.
16.What advice does the writer give to teenagers?
A.Listen to music as much as possible. B.Choose music that makes them feel good.
C.Avoid all sad songs. D.Only listen to classical music.
17.What is the main theme of the text?
A.Culture. B.Science. C.Sports. D.History.

Have you ever felt sick or had a headache while riding in a car? That’s carsickness, a common problem. It happens because your brain is in such a situation: you’re sitting still, but your inner ear sends movement (移动) signals (信号) to the brain.
When carsickness hits, what do you usually do? Some people take medicine, while others try sitting at the front of the car to look ahead or keep the window open for fresh air. Those methods can work, but Chinese scientists have found a new, easier solution — listening to music! They studied how to help people feel better from carsickness and discovered that different kinds of music have different effects on reducing it.
The study results were quite interesting. Joyful music worked the best, reducing carsickness by 57.3%. Soft music was almost as good, cutting down carsickness by 56.7%. Passionate music helped a little, with a 48.3% reduction. However, sad music didn’t help at all. In fact, it was even worse than doing nothing. The control group just had a rest to reduce carsickness. They reported a reduction in carsickness of 43.3% after their rest, while those who listened to sad music reported a reduction of just 40%.
Researchers think that soft music helps you relax, while joyful music keeps your mind busy and helps you feel good. But sad music could have the opposite effect. It might make you feel worse by bringing up negative (悲观的) feelings.
So, next time you start to feel carsick during a car ride, listen to some joyful or soft music! It could make your trip more enjoyable and help you feel better.

22.What is the main idea of the passage?

The term “folk song” has been accepted by most people for over a hundred years, but there is still plenty of disagreement about what it actually means. The explanation of the meaning provided by the International Folk Music Council says that folk music is the music of ordinary people, which is passed on from person to person by being listened to rather than learnt from the printed page.
When songs have gone through this process, their origins (起源) are usually impossible to find. For example, if a farmer makes up a song and sings it to a couple of friends who like it and memorize it, possibly when the friends come to sing it themselves, one of them might forget some of the words and make up new ones to fill the gaps, while the other, perhaps more artistic, might add a few details to the tune (曲调) and improve a couple of lines of text. If this happens a few times, there will be many different versions (版本), and then the song’s original writer will be forgotten, and finally the song will become common property. This constant (不断的) reshaping and recreation is the essence of folk music.
Therefore, modern popular songs and other published music, even though widely sung by people who are not skilled musicians, are not considered folk music. The music and words have been written in books or recorded on CDs, so they cannot be changed freely as folk songs can.
The best environment for the creation of folk music is a remote rural (乡村的) community. In such a setting, folk songs and dances have a special purpose at every period in a person’s life, from childhood to death. Epic tales of heroic deeds, seasonal songs about calendar events and occupational songs are also likely to be sung. In these communities, folk music serves as a way to pass down history, traditions and values. It brings people together for celebrations, rituals and storytelling, keeping their culture alive and passing it down to future generations.
23.Which is the correct order of how folk music is formed?
a. The friends learn and remember the song.
b. The original writer of the song is forgotten.
c. Many different versions of the song appear.
d. A farmer creates a new song and sings it to friends.
e. The words and tune of the song are changed a few times.
f. The song becomes folk music and belongs to everyone.

Nowadays, more middle‑school students take music lessons. A recent survey talks about students’ real thoughts on music learning. Over 68 percent of the students in the survey take music classes out of their own interest. Only 32 percent take lessons because their parents wish them to.
Learning music brings students two big kinds of gains. First, it brings inner feelings. Playing or singing lets students show feelings that they cannot easily talk about in daily conversations. Second, it brings social gains. Students can join music groups and communicate with partners. They learn to work together when they prepare for group performances.
Many students mention one common difficulty. They have little spare time for practice because of heavy schoolwork. Some students give up halfway for this reason. To solve the problem, some music teachers suggest short but daily practice. Practicing for 15—20 minutes every day works better than practising for several hours once a week.
Music learning is not only about winning prizes. It is more about enjoying the beauty hidden inside musical pieces. That is the real purpose for teenagers to learn music.

A.By telling a personal story. B.By asking the reader questions.
