(23-24高三上·北京房山良乡中学·期中)I used to hate being called upon in class mainly because I didn’t like attention drawn to myself. And unless otherwise assigned a seat by the teacher, I always chose to sit at the back of the classroom.
All this 1 after I joined a sports team. It began when a teacher suggested I try out for the basketball team. At first I thought it was a crazy 2 because I didn’t have a good sense of balance, nor did I have the ability to keep pace with the others on the team and they would tease me. But for the teacher who kept insisting on my “ 3 for it”, I wouldn’t have decided to give a try.
Getting up the courage to go to the tryouts was only the half of it! When I first started 4 the practice sessions, I didn’t even know the rules of the game, much worse what I was doing. Sometimes I’d get 5 and take a shot at the wrong direction, which made me feel really stupid. 6 I wasn’t the only one “new” at the game, so I decided to focus on learning the game, do my best at each practice session, and not be too hard on myself for the things I didn’t 7 “just yet”.
I practiced and practiced. Soon I knew the rules and the “moves”. Being part of a team was fun and motivating. Very soon the competitive 8 in me was winning over my lack of confidence. With time, I learned how to play and made friends in the process-friends who respected my efforts to work hard and be a team player. I never had so much fun!
With my improved self-confidence comes more praise from teachers and classmates. I have gone from “ 9 ” in the back of the classroom and not wanting to call attention to myself, to raising my hand——even when I sometimes wasn’t and not 100 percent 10 I had the right answer. Now I have more self-confidence in myself.

Two years ago, I took part in a speech competition and it was a hard time for me when the judge 1 the winners. At last, the moment of truth came. I got the worst.
However, I really wanted to try again. I realized that finding the right topic was the most important part of the whole process. It needs to be motivational and inspirational to the 2 . So I reworked my speech for the following year, 3 a different topic and spending many hours making it flow better.
The next year I participated in the competition again. While I didn’t win 9 in the competition, I did gain a new viewpoint. I discovered that I could fail successfully. (24-25高三上·北京中国人民大学附属中学·期中)I’ve never been an athlete. Aside from excelling at all academic disciplines at school, my main goal was to 1 PE at all costs. In my twenties, I went for an occasional yoga or Zumba class, but that was really the summary of all my athletic accomplishments.
That was until the end of 2016, when I was unexpectedly 2 . The odds of getting a new job soon were not in my favor and 3 thoughts of not being good enough started to kick in. I was feeling quite depressed but pushed myself to go and cheer for the TCS NYC Marathon runners as the course was going through our neighborhood.
However, while being there, I got phenomenal 4 from all the runners, smiling, applauding and high-fiving constantly. Not a runner myself, I thought maybe I could give running a shot, just to try, to use my neglected gym membership and see where it 5 me. And so I tried. I went to my local gym the next morning and got on a treadmill. I was out of breath by minute five, but I slowed down, walked for a bit and then restarted. I came back the next day, hoping to 6 a few minutes longer. By the end of two weeks, I could run for 30 minutes, which was a huge success.
While I saw my body starting to look more toned, I also noticed my negative thoughts didn’t occur that 7 . And it sparked a thought — what if I could set a running goal and sign up for my first-ever race? I did and races sort of became a new hobby.
In the meantime, I was able to 8 a few freelance projects. They offered me a good income, and, most importantly, the time to work out for the big race. Also, when I was going for interviews, I started to feel very confident in my abilities, experience and skills.
I got my full-time job offer at my dream company just a couple of weeks before the half-marathon. Although I got an injury from over-training right before the race, I still went for it and still finished within my 9 time.
I still have a long running journey ahead of me — I’d love to work on my speed, my technique and I dream of running a marathon outside of the US. Running gives me 10 that I can do anything I set my mind to.

Forklifts whiz around the loading dock, pulling pallets of donated strawberries off one truck or pushing boxes of potatoes onto another headed to 1 people later in the day. Everything moves fast at Food Forward — a nonprofit devoted to giving away agricultural products that would 2 be wasted.
Food Forward started 15 years ago. Six people responded, but only one 4 at the first event. He persisted, and slowly, an initial core group formed. (24-25高三上·北京朝阳·期中)My 10-year-old son Egbert was a picky eater - he only ate chicken nuggets and yogurt - and unwilling to try new things. According to him, it’s because he has phobias, including heights and the dark. I was hoping to find a way to 1 him without using old sayings like “If you don’t try it, you’ll never know if you like it.” So before our skiing trip to Los Angeles, I 2 a rule: we would say yes to everything, including new foods and experiences.
We said yes from the beginning of our trip. At the airport café, Egbert began by trying new foods like vegetable meatballs. 3 , he rated it as “not bad”. The next day in the snowboarding school, despite the fear of heights, Egbert challenged himself to learn how to ride a chairlift. After skiing, we were both cold and wet, and Egbert suggested the outdoor hot tub (浴缸). Though it would be a completely new experience for us, I 4 it together with him and the experience proved to be a delight. I felt 5 of myself for trying something new.
On our summer holidays, we continued the 6 of saying yes. At the competition in Cody, Wyoming, neither of my son and I 7 when we were invited onto the field to join in the horse racing. Though we came back without prizes, we were both laughing, sweaty and 8 . I know it’s a moment we’ll never forget.
