(25-26八上·北京大兴·期中)The Story of a Bicycle
Last summer, my brother Leo gave me his old bicycle before he left for college. It was covered in rust (锈), and the paint was old and losing its colour. I never thought I could make it look new again, but Dad said, “Let’s try, my son.”
We spent two afternoons cleaning and repairing (修理) it. I cleaned every part carefully, while Dad fixed the brakes (车闸). I felt very tired by the time we finished. At first, the bicycle still looked very old. However, Dad smiled and said, “Wait until we paint it.” I waited with great excitement, checking every day.
A week later, Dad brought home a can of bright blue paint. That was my favourite colour. Then we began to paint the bicycle together. When the work was finished, it shone under the sun and looked completely new! I felt so proud and happy. But it seemed that I was overjoyed too early.
“Tomorrow,” Dad said, “we’ll give it to Mike next door. His family does not have enough money to buy a bicycle, and he needs one to go to school.”
“What?!” I cried. “But this is my bicycle now! We worked so hard on it.”
“Things are more meaningful when they’re shared,” Dad said gently. “Seeing others happy can fill your heart, too.”
The next morning, we brought the bicycle to Mike’s house. We also left a note with the words “A free gift for you!” on the bicycle. I rang the bell, and then quickly hid behind a tree with Dad. When Mike saw the bicycle and the note, he was surprised. Then, he jumped onto the seat and rode around happily, shouting, “Thank you, thank you!”
I didn’t know who he was thanking, but I felt warm and happy. The bicycle was gone, but I realized something important—sharing is better than keeping something for yourself.

A. Tired. B. Sad. C. Worried. D. Excited.

A. Because he got praise for his hard work.

(25-26八上·北京清华附中朝阳分校·期中)Alice Lee is a high school student studying at a private school. She is doing some voluntary work at an after-school program to help students from poor families.
On the first day of her work, she noticed that many kids were lining up (排队) for free sandwiches and fruits. She was surprised. One of the organizers says that many of these students don’t get enough to eat at home. So a school lunch or an after-school meal might be the most food they would get all day. She has also been told that some hungry kids can receive free lunches, but others are only allowed reduced-price (降价的) meals, and those students’ families have to pay for the part of their food.
Lee was shocked. She decided to offer help to those who are suffering from (遭受) hunger. “I want other kids to understand that if you see a problem, you don’t have to wait to be an adult to fix it.” says Lee. (25-26八上·北京延庆·期中)Impossible→I’m possible
“Nothing is impossible, the word itself says ‘I’m possible’.” Audrey Hepburn, the British actress and star of the silver screen, said this. However, doubts (怀疑) and fears often hold us back. How can we face them and succeed?
The runner Su Bingtian gives an excellent answer to this question. The young man began his sporting life in 2006. At that time, no one from Asia had ever run the 100m race in less than 10 seconds. Su trained hard and quickly became one of the fastest runners in Asia. In 2011, he ran the race in 10.16 seconds.
However, Su wasn’t satisfied. To run in under 10 seconds, in 2014, he changed his starting leg. This was a very risky decision. He had to start from zero. At first, he was slower than before. Also, he was 25 years old. At such an age, many runners choose to stop running. People doubted his decision. However, Su fought his fears and became a sporting hero.
In 2015, he clocked 9.99 seconds and made history. In 2021, he finished in 9.83 seconds at the Tokyo Olympics. He also became the first Chinese athlete to run in the Olympic 100m final.
Su Bingtian has told youngsters, “Never let your age hold you back. Have a try and try harder. I believe you can write your own story.” Nothing is impossible as long as you try and stick to it. Everyone can be a Superman.

C. Su won a gold medal in the 100m race at the Tokyo Olympics.
D. Su was the first Asian runner to take part in the Olympic 100m final.

(25-26八上·北京中国人民大学附属中学·期中)When I was ten years old, I found my sister was different. She had autism (自闭症). She could not look people in the eye. She would often say to herself and say her words again very quietly. She had few friends. Although we went to the same primary school, I never, or hardly ever said in front of others that she was my sister. I was always afraid that others would laugh at me.
Just two years ago, my sister and her classmates had to prepare for a show. She had to act by herself because no one wanted to act with her. “I’ll sing,” she told my parents and me when we were having dinner. I couldn’t believe my ears! How could she sing in front of the school? She even couldn’t look people in the eye. What was worse, she couldn’t speak fluently.
The big day finally arrived. It took her about a minute to tell her name and class to people. I could see someone laughing at her. And some people became bored and said something in a low voice.
“Why is she taking so long?” Some people around me asked. How I wished I had been somewhere else! Finally, my sister started to sing. She opened her mouth, and I was really moved—she sang so beautifully. The hall became quiet. There was only her great singing.
I listened carefully to the song. I was ashamed (惭愧的) of myself. Although I hardly took her seriously as her brother, she didn’t say anything. She never took anything that I did to heart. It was then that I decided to make a change.

(25-26八上·北京汇文中学·期中)Luck has always been my closest friend these past five years. As you already know, there are a lot of forest fires during the summer season. Many forests are badly burnt by fire each year.
This hot summer, not far from our house, a forest caught fire. It was in July and a heat wave had been going on for three days. Luck rushed towards the forest because of the burning heat. There was no longer any hope at that moment to wait for Luck to come back. Suddenly, a fireman ran into my house and told me that my dog Luck succeeded in saving four cats that were caught in the fire. According to the fireman, Luck caught the cats, moving them one by one into a safe place.
I ran out of the house and went with the firemen to the forest to pick up the saved cats. When we arrived, Luck was not there. Then we heard the sound of a dog coming from the forest barking (犬吠). I knew it was the sound of my dog Luck. The firemen followed the tracks (踪迹) of the dog until they found him barking loudly by the side of a injured fireman who was hopelessly lying on the ground and waiting for someone to save him.
Thanks to Luck, four cats and a fireman were saved. That day, I was very proud of Luck for his two heroic actions.

Passage 1
(25-26八上·北京房山·期中)Last month, our teacher said there would be a talent show in our school. I quickly signed up to play the guitar. I had been practicing “Clair de Lune” for weeks. It was my favourite song, and I decided to play it perfectly. I felt so happy just thinking about it.
The night before the show, something terrible happened. I was playing the song one last time when suddenly the high E string (弦) broke. I felt very sad. I didn’t have a spare (备用的) string, and all the music stores were already closed. I sat on my bed, looking at the broken string. Tears filled my eyes. “I should just stop trying,” I said quietly.
My mum walked past my room and saw me. She came in and sat down next to me. “Remember when you learned to ride a bike?” she said. “You fell many times, but you kept getting back on. This is just another small problem.” Her warm words made me think. If I gave up, I would waste all my hard work.
The next morning, I borrowed an old guitar from my music teacher. It wasn’t in tune (曲调), and the strings felt rough (粗糙的). But it was better than nothing. I practised like crazy backstage (后台). My fingers hurt while I was getting familiar with the new instrument. When my name was called, I took a deep breath and walked out.
At first, my hands shook. But as I played, I forgot about the broken string and the old guitar. I focused on the music—the soft notes drifting (飘荡) through the hall. When I finished, the crowd clapped (鼓掌) loudly. I didn’t win first place, but that didn’t matter (要紧). What mattered was that I hadn’t given up.
On that day, I realised something important. Difficulties are just chances to show how strong you are. Never give up! Now, whenever I face something hard, I remember the broken guitar string—and I keep going.

Passage 2
(25-26八上·北京陈经纶中学·期中)The power (电) failed on the night before the science fair. Lucy sat on the cold stairs, staring at her half-finished solar-system model. The nine foam (泡沫) planets were painted, but the tiny bulb that should be the sun would not light. Without electricity, she could not solder (焊接) the loose wires (松散的电线), and tomorrow her project would sit unseen on the back table.
Lucy’s dad was at work and her mom was far away caring for Grandpa. There was no money for a new tool box. She had built everything from old balls, toothpicks, and the last of her birthday paints.
Outside, rain began to tick against the windows like tiny nails (钉子). Lucy sighed (叹气). Suddenly a bright beam (光线) cut through the glass. There stood Alex, her quiet classmate from three doors down. A yellow raincoat covered his head; under his arm was a small tool box.
“Need a hand?” he asked. “I brought my dad’s soldering iron and a power bank.”
Lucy opened the door wide. They worked for an hour, talking about comets (彗星) and basketball and whether Pluto (冥王星) should still count. When the town lights finally returned, the model spun (旋转) gently, lighting their smiling faces.
The next afternoon the judges stopped longest at Lucy’s table. She won second prize: a book on space and a shiny silver sticker. She ran to Alex and pressed the book into his hands.
“We did it,” she said.
Alex shook his head. “You made the planets. I just held the light.”
Lucy smiled. “That’s what friends are for—holding the light when it’s dark.”

Passage 3
(25-26八上·北京顺义仁和中学·期中)It was half past seven on Monday morning: time to get ready for school. Jay Stone rolled out of bed. He did a couple of quick wake-up exercises and then he went over to his mirror and looked at himself.
“Not bad, Stone, not bad.” he said to himself and smiled. Maybe he wasn’t ready for Hollywood, but with his dark brown eyes and his thick brown hair, he had the looks that turned girls’ heads. He moved closer to the mirror and smiled, checking his teeth.
“Perfect.” he thought. “Good enough for a toothpaste ad.”
As his eyes moved down to his strong arms, he smiled again. The hours he spent in the gym and doing sit-ups had paid off.
But suddenly, the smile froze. His eyes moved from the upper part of his body down to his legs. His legs were short. Not just short, but far too short for his body. He had the upper body of a six-footer, but because of his legs he was much less than six feet! Six inches less! Sitting, he was as tall as almost anyone. Standing, he had to look up at most of the boys and even many of the girls.
Why didn’t his legs grow with the rest of his body? He was one of the shortest boys in his class. He was the shortest in his own family. He was even shorter than his “little” sister—by three inches! Where did his legs come from?
He certainly didn’t get them from his parents. They were both quite tall. Looking through old family photos, he found the answer. It was his grandfather on his mother’s side. His short legs were a gift from Grandpa Tuttle.
Thanks a lot, Grandpa!
Of course, the kids at school all noticed Jay’s short legs and they had a nickname (外号) for him: Stubs! Almost no one called him by his real name; they all called him Stubs. Stubs Stone, Jay didn’t like his nickname, but he had to accept it. He had no choice.
But Jay couldn’t see in the mirror what his legs could do. They were quick and strong. He was the youngest player on the Brewer High football team. He could run faster than anyone else in the team and, like a rabbit, he kept going and going. Even at basketball, where the other players were much taller than him, they were still afraid of him because of his speed.
Jay shook his head. “Stubs, Stubs Stone, the kid with stubby legs. Yeah, that’s me.” He said to himself with a little smile. Suddenly, he heard his mother’s voice.
“Jay, it’s breakfast time.”

My Dad, a Superhero
When I was only seven, my family took a road trip to San Francisco. My father was driving our family car along the highway. The rain was pouring down so heavily that each drop of rain felt as if it were going to break the windshield (挡风玻璃).
I wasn’t scared. The downpour fascinated me. However, my brother, who is only one year younger than me, was annoying me with his unfriendly hits. I tried hard to stop him but failed. I could only complain to Mom and our sister about the fighting in the backseat, but it was useless.
My father, who was driving, knew the way to stop us from fighting. So he said, “Boys, do you know that I have learned magic?”
My brother and I stopped immediately. “What?”
My father replied, “Do you want me to show you some magic?”
I felt so excited that I jumped out of my seat. Even my brother was curious about what Dad was saying. It was every child’s dream to have a superhero father.
“I have the ability to stop the rain from falling. It’s only for short periods of time, so you have to pay close attention,” he said.
I was speechless. This seemed to be an impossible trick, even for a superhero. I could only stare at him through the rearview mirror (后视镜), wondering if the magic could really stop the rain.
“Are you ready?” he asked. “Yes!” we both answered.
“Okay. Let me collect my powers.” There was a short pause. “Okay. First, I have to say the magic words ‘Abra Cadabra’. Here we go ... Abra Cadabra!”
And just like that, for one second, the rain stopped! It was a miracle! I was shocked. My dad really was a superhero. How could I not have known? For years, he must have hidden his magical weapons in the garage. I bet his old car was just a cover so that the bad guys wouldn’t know who he really was.
“Wow!” I said to my brother, who seemed to be just as amazed as I was. “Wow...” was all he could say, too.
Then our car drove under another overpass.

Passage 2
(25-26八上·北京丰台第十二中学·期中)The Winning Team
Peter kept his eyes on the ground. He felt like there was a heavy weight on his shoulders as he walked home alone. It was the worst day of his life. His mind would not stop thinking about what happened only just an hour ago on the school soccer field. How could he have missed scoring that goal? He had let his whole team down. His stupid mistake made him angry. His team had lost the game because of him. He was really worried that his coach might kick him off the team.
As soon as he walked through the door, his father asked, “What’s wrong, son?” Peter’s feelings were written all over his face. “I lost the game,” Peter replied. Then he went into his room without another word. Ten minutes later, Peter heard his father knocking on his bedroom door. He opened the door to let him in.
“Look, Peter. I don’t know what happened. But whatever it was, don’t be too hard on yourself.”
“I lost the game, Dad. I failed my team. They’ll probably never let me play again.”
Soccer is about team effort. You’re not the only reason your team lost. If you have a good team, you should support each other. Besides, winning or losing is only half the game. The other half is learning how to communicate with your teammates and learning from your mistakes.“
Peter didn’t say anything, but what his father said made him think carefully.
The next day, Peter went to soccer practice with courage rather than fear in his heart.
“Hey, guys,” he said to his teammates. “ I’m really sorry about yesterday. We were so close to winning that game. But I think if we continue to pull together, we’re going to win the next one.”
To his surprise, his teammates all nodded in agreement.
“Yeah,” they said, “don’t worry about it. It’s never just one person’s fault. We should think about how we can do better next time.”
Peter smiled. It made him feel lucky to know that he was on a winning team.

Passage 3
(25-26八上·北京第八十中学·期中)Since I started training in artistic swimming, I have had the best time of my life. My dance experience has helped me pick up the skills and grace (优雅) necessary for the sport. I am also lucky to be in a wonderful club, Crystal Aquatics, and I am forever thankful to my coach, Crystal, for believing in me and sending me to my first competition.
The competition served as a great learning experience for me, and the memory remains clear today. I had practiced hard for the competition, and I was excited and nervous on that day. My family and my friend Emily were with me to give me encouragement. My coach helped me with my warm-up and gave me support as well. I was really touched by their love. When it was my turn, I was in high spirits and took my position.
I waited for the music. However, the music did not come. I was counting in my head, dived into the water and began my performance, until I was stopped by my coach. I then realized that I had started too early. It was a false start. I felt very embarrassed (尴尬的). However, at that point, I also felt a rush to prove that I could still do it.
For a second time, I dived into the water and gave 200 percent effort. When I was done, my coach, family, and friend said “Good job.” Although they were encouraging and tried to comfort me, I still felt that I had let everyone down.
Later that day, my coach messaged me that she was proud of me and that, even with the false start, I had done well and completed my routine (动作) beautifully, She also shared a photo of me during my performance. It showed my excitement and happiness while I was dancing in the water.
This experience reminded me that life isn’t about victory all the time. What truly matters is finding joy in doing what you love and having the courage to get back up after failing. If we don’t give up, every failure can make us stronger to keep going.

Brian was a funny student. He loved watching comedies best and hoped to become a comedy actor one day.
When he heard about the talent show to be held at his school, Brian decided to take part. He had never acted on stage before, and he was very excited. But some students laughed at him. “You are not funny but silly,” Ken, one of his classmates, said to his face. “No one will like what you do,” another boy also said to him loudly.
Brian couldn’t understand why they were so unkind to him. For a moment, he thought about giving up the show. But he remembered how much his friends liked his jokes, and that his teachers said his jokes were very funny. So he decided to prepare for the show.
Brian did a great job at the talent show. Everyone loved his performance, and he won the first prize. His teachers and friends were proud of him. Even so, Ken told Brian that he was not funny and that he would never be successful. Brian didn’t understand why Ken said so, but he realized that it had nothing to do with him. He confidently continued to work towards his goal.
As the years went on, Brian met more people like Ken. “You’ll do a terrible job,” they said to him. Luckily, most people encouraged him and some helped him to become even funnier. He got a lot of chances to perform in movies. He was even invited to appear on television. His fans thanked him because his comedies made them feel good when they were unhappy.

(25-26八上·北京海淀·期中)Anna Mary Robertson was a famous American painter. It is often said that Anna first took up painting when she was nearly 80 years old. In fact, when she was a little girl, she drew whenever she had a chance.
Long before she became known, Anna lived a life full of challenges. She always kept busy with farm chores, housework, and children, but she never really stopped pursuing (追求) art.
In Anna’s late age, she pictured some scenes in her mind before painting. She would close her eyes and recall a happy time from her early life. She would remember helping her father on the farm. She would see the people, the farm buildings, and the animals. She would imagine the blue mountains and the softly falling snow.
Anna’s friends and family members loved the paintings. She gave them away as gifts. A friend hung several of the paintings in a local store. One day, a stranger came into the store and bought every one of her paintings. He took her paintings to New York City and showed them to some art collectors. One of these collectors, Dr. Kallir, liked the paintings. He hung some of them in his gallery (画廊). The newspaper did a story about the art show. The reporter called Anna “Grandma Moses”. From then on, almost everyone called her that way. Grandma Moses kept on painting. Her paintings got better, and they got more popular.
In her lifetime, Moses created about 1,500 works of art. They were cheerful, warm and full of life, just like Grandma herself. Her paintings still remain popular today.
“As I look back on my life, it’s like a good day’s work. It was done and I feel satisfied with it. I knew nothing better than painting and made full use of what life offered. Life is what we make it, has always been, and will always be,” she said.

Lily was a shy girl who often felt like she wasn’t “enough”. She compared herself with her classmates. Some were amazing at sports or dancing. Some had lots of friends. Lily often thought, “Why can’t I be like them?” This question felt like a puzzle she had never solved.
One day, Lily found a puzzle game online—The Perfect You.
Curiously, Lily clicked it and there was a puzzle piece with a green light on the screen. Suddenly, the puzzle piece spoke, “What makes you happy?” Lily gasped (倒吸气) and quickly closed the website, too scared to answer. She tried to forget about it, but that night, the shining puzzle piece appeared in her mind. Lily couldn’t sleep.
The next morning, Lily thought for a long time and opened the game again. Then, she answered the question she saw on the screen yesterday, “I feel happy when I play with Meria.” To her surprise, the puzzle piece flew to its correct place.
Then, a second puzzle piece appeared, shining even brighter, and asked, “What are you proud of?” Lily thought for a long time before answering. “I’m proud of myself when I help other kids.” The puzzle piece flew to its correct place just like the first one.
Day by day, more puzzle pieces appeared, each asking a question. Sometimes it was easy to answer. Sometimes it wasn’t. Finally, the last puzzle piece appeared. It asked, “Do you feel left out sometimes?” Lily froze. “I don’t know.” But then she remembered when her friends worked together and didn’t include her. Then, Lily remembered her mom telling her: “It’s OK to feel alone sometimes. Everyone gets to choose their friends, but don’t give up on yourself.”
Taking a deep breath, Lily said, “Yes, I feel left out sometimes, but I know it’s OK.” The whole puzzle shined and turned into a shiny mirror. Instead of showing someone “perfect”, the mirror reflected Lily’s own smiling face with the words: Be yourself. Lily felt warmth spread through her. She realized she didn’t need to be like Sarah, Jake, or Meria. She just needed to be herself.
1.How did Lily feel when she heard the puzzle piece speak at first?

Two things changed my life; my mother and a white, pretty bike basket. My mother is a strict parent and I had to earn my pocket money by doing housework around the house.
One day, my mother drove me to the bike shop to get a tire fixed, and there it was in the window; white, shiny, and decorated with beautiful flowers. It was so special and I knew I had to have the basket. “It’s beautiful,” my mother said when I pointed it out to her.
“Mom, please, can I get it? I'll do more housework for as long as you say, but I need that basket. I really love it...”
“You know,” she said gently, “If you save up, you could buy this yourself.” “By the time I make enough, it'll be gone!”
“I’ll buy the basket for you, but you have to work for it,” she said.
My mother bought the beautiful basket and put it safely in some secret place I couldn’t find. Each week I eagerly counted my growing income. And then, weeks later, I jumped for joy. Oh, happy day! I made it! I finally had the exact amount we’d agreed upon.
Days later, the unthinkable thing happened. A neighbor girl appeared with the exact same basket on her shiny, new bike. The eight-year-old me cried and ran fast back home to tell my mother about this terrible news.
And then came the lesson I’ve taken with me through my life; "Honey, it doesn't matter that the baskets look the same. Your basket is extra-special," Mom said, gently drying my hot tears. "Your basket is special because you got the basket through your hard work.”

1.How did the writer feel when he waited for his father to paint the bicycle?
A. Tired. B. Sad. C. Worried. D. Excited.
2.What did the writer and his dad do with the bicycle in the end?
A. They sold it to others at a high price.
B. They passed it on to a neighbor.
C. They kept it for themselves.
D. They gave it back to Leo.
3.Why did the writer feel warm and happy?
A. Because he got praise for his hard work.
B. Because the bicycle looked like a new one.
C. Because he learned the meaning of sharing.
D. Because Mike became one of his best friends.
【答案】1. D 2. B 3. C

On the first day of her work, she noticed that many kids were lining up (排队) for free sandwiches and fruits. She was surprised. One of the organizers says that many of these students don’t get enough to eat at home. So a school lunch or an after-school meal might be the most food they would get all day.

Emma was very excited. Today was the championship (锦标赛) baseball game! Emma really wanted to help her team win a trophy (奖杯).
She put on her clothes, picked up her baseball glove and talked to herself, “I hope I get a hit today.”
Emma was a great hitter in practice, but she had never hit a ball during an always struck out (三振出局).
On the way to the field, Emma kept her head down and was silent (默不作声). “Are you feeling okay, Emma?” her mom asked.
“I really don’t want to strike out,” Emma said.
“Don’t worry! Just keep your eye on the ball. You can do it,” Emma’s mom said.
When the game started, Emma cheered loudly for her teammates. She caught a fly ball in the outfield to make an out, and everyone cheered for her. Emma struck out when it was her turn to bat (击球), but her team was doing well.
The game was tied (平局), and it was her team’s last chance (机会) to score. Frankie was up first. He hit the ball hard and ran to third base quickly. That meant he could score and win the game if the next batter got a good hit. Next up was Henry, and then Kara, but they both struck out. Emma was next up.
Emma could feel all the eyes on her as she went up to the plate. She closed her eyes and swung hard, but missed.
“Keep your eye on the ball, Emma!” her mom called from the stands (看台).
Emma nodded and went back into the batter’s box. This time she kept her eyes wide open and took a deep breath before she swung the bat.

(25-26八上·北京文汇中学·期中)From Nobody to Somebody

(25-26八上·北京第八中学·期中)The Perfect You
Lily was a shy girl who often felt like she wasn’t “enough”.

(25-26八上·北京第一六六中学·期中)The Basket
