Unit 5 The Value of Money
Waiter: Good evening, sir. A table for one?
Henry: Yes, please. I’m really hungry. What’s today’s special?
Waiter: Roast beef, sir. And we have fine soup, if you like.
Henry: Roast beef and soup, then. (He sits down and looks around nervously.)
问题:
1. What did Henry order?
2. What was the waiter's attitude toward Henry?
3. Where does this conversation take place?
Good evening、A table for one?、What’s today’s special?
听中定位——Roast beef and soup;Good evening;A table for one?;restaurant。
Henry enters the restaurant, dirty and hungry. He sits down.
Waiter: Good evening, sir. A table for one?
Henry: Yes, please. I’m starving. What do you have to eat?
Waiter: Today’s special is roast beef, sir, with potatoes. Shall I bring you some?
Henry: Please. And some soup first, if it’s not too much trouble.
Waiter: Very good, sir. (He goes, but glances back at Henry’s dirty clothes with a frown.)
(Henry eats the soup and the beef very fast, as if he hasn’t eaten for days.)
Waiter: Would you like dessert, sir? We have a fine apple pie.
Henry: No... no, thank you. I’m finished. (He searches his pockets, his face turning pale.) Oh no...
Waiter: Is something wrong, sir?
Henry: I’m afraid I don’t have any change on me. Do you accept... this? (He holds out a huge bank note.)
Waiter: (his eyes go wide) Good heavens! Is this... a million-pound note?
Owner: (hurrying over) What’s all this noise?
Waiter: This gentleman is holding a million-pound note, sir! The genuine one!
Owner: (bowing low) A millionaire in my little restaurant! What an honour! Please, sir, take our best table. Steak, champagne, the finest wine — whatever you wish, on the house!
Henry: But I only ordered soup and beef...
Owner: Think nothing of it, sir! My waiters were rude to you — forgive us! (turning to the waiters) Show this gentleman the greatest respect! He is our most valued guest!
听中定位——dirty and hungry;searches his pockets;million-pound note;What an honour。
(Who+Where+Want)
(Conflict/Turn)
(Result/Attitude)
Good evening / May I help you(锁场景)、转折 But / However / when he hands him the note(锁剧情突变)、评价性 What an honour / How dare you(锁态度)。
Henry leaves the restaurant, still not quite believing what has happened. The owner and the waiters follow him to the door, bowing and smiling. Outside, a newspaper seller recognizes him from the restaurant and shouts, “It’s the millionaire!” In a few minutes, a crowd gathers around Henry. Some want his autograph, others just want to look at him. Henry is confused — an hour ago he was a hungry, homeless stranger, and now the whole street treats him like a king.
解析: 信号词——开头 bowing and smiling 定人物与场合;反复出现的 millionaire、crowd、restaurant 定话题;结尾 treats him like a king 定态度。
The next evening, Henry returns to the same restaurant. The owner rushes to the door to greet him. “Welcome back, sir! Tonight, everything is on the house — the best steak, the finest champagne!” Henry, who has only two pounds in his pocket, says nothing but a simple “thank you”. When the bill finally comes, the owner writes “FREE” across it with a bow. Henry feels a strange mixture of shame and relief — the same man who almost threw him out yesterday now treats him like a royal guest.
问题:
1. How much money does Henry have in his pocket?
2. How much did this meal cost?
3. How has the boss's attitude changed compared to yesterday?
听中定位——only two pounds in his pocket → 锁定 two pounds。
听中定位——almost threw him out yesterday(冷)与 treats him like a royal guest(热)构成转折。
从 sir 到 our most valued guest,用词升级即态度反转。
In the club, the two brothers laugh as they watch Henry through the window. “He has kept the note for thirty days and never once tried to change it,” says Oliver. “He passed the test. He deserves the job.” Roderick smiles and shakes his head. “I knew he would. A man’s character is not measured by the money he holds, but by how he holds it.” Henry, unaware of their words, walks in, holding the envelope. “Gentlemen,” he says, “I believe this is yours.”
问题:
1.What was the attitude of the two brothers toward Henry?
2. “A man’s character is not measured by the money he holds, but by how he holds it.”
1. 取证——passed the test / deserves the job / I knew he would 三处均为肯定、满意语气,无一字后悔或怀疑 → 答案: 赞赏、满意。
2. 句式拆解——not A but B 结构中,A(拥有多少钱)被否定,B(如何对待钱)才是落点。
plan to return 被当成 has returned
圈 done / not done
1. M: I heard Henry had a million-pound note. W: But he still asked for a job washing dishes. Q: What did Henry ask for?
A. A job.
B. A note.
C. A table.
D. A suit.
答案:A。 听中定位——asked for a job washing dishes。
2. W: Why do you refuse the free champagne? M: Because I didn’t earn it. Q: Why does the man refuse the champagne?
A. He dislikes it.
B. He is not thirsty.
C. He didn’t earn it.
D. It is too expensive.
听中定位——Because I didn’t earn it。
3. M: The tailor treated me coldly until I showed him the note. W: Money changes how people see you, not who you are. Q: What does the woman mean?
A. Money changes a person’s character.
B. Money changes others’ opinion of you.
C. The tailor is honest.
D. The note is worthless.
听中定位——changes how people see you, not who you are。 排除干扰——A 与 not who you are 相反。
4. W: Did Henry spend any of the million pounds? M: Not a penny. He returned it to the brothers. Q: What did Henry do with the note?
A. Spent it.
B. Returned it.
C. Lost it.
D. Sold it.
听中定位——returned it to the brothers。 排除干扰——Not a penny 排除 A。
5. M: I would rather be poor and honest than rich and feared. W: That’s the value of money. Q: What does the man value most?
A. Wealth.
B. Honesty.
C. Fame.
D. Power.
听中定位——poor and honest。
Waiter: May I help you, sir? Looking for a table?
Henry: No, thank you. I was wondering — does this restaurant have any job openings? I could wash dishes, or wait tables.
Waiter: (surprised) You? Begging for work? But, sir, everyone in London knows who you are — the famous millionaire! Why would a rich man ask for a job?
Henry: (with a sigh) That’s just it. I’m not rich. I hold a note I can’t spend, and I’m ashamed to be treated like a king for money I don’t really have. I’d rather earn an honest living.
Waiter: (shaking his head in disbelief) I’ve never heard anything like it. A man who turns down free champagne to wash dishes... Well, sir, if you truly mean it, the kitchen always needs a strong pair of hands.
Henry: Thank you. That’s the kindest thing anyone has said to me all week.
Waiter: (smiling) Then you start tomorrow. And between us, sir — that million-pound note of yours? You’ve got more character than any millionaire I’ve ever met.
job openings / wash dishes / wait tables → 锁定 job
2
I hold a note I can’t spend →
more character than any millionaire → 评价性用词
5
would rather earn an honest living → 诚实劳动重于白拿钱
1. What is Henry asking for at the restaurant?
A. A table for dinner.
B. A job in the kitchen.
C. Some free food.
D. A chance to see the owner.
2. Why is the waiter surprised to hear Henry’s request?
A. Henry looks too weak to work.
B. Henry is a famous millionaire.
C. Henry has never washed dishes.
D. The restaurant has too many workers.
听中定位——everyone in London knows who you are — the famous millionaire。
3. What does Henry say about himself?
A. He is rich and famous.
B. He is the owner of the note.
C. He has a note he cannot spend.
D. He plans to leave London soon.
听中定位——I hold a note I can’t spend。
4. What does the waiter think of Henry in the end?
A. He is strange.
B. He has great character.
C. He is foolish.
D. He needs more money.
答案:B。 读题预判——问 think of Henry in the end。听中定位——You’ve got more character。 排除干扰——A、C 是 disbelief(难以置信)而非评价。
5. What can we infer about Henry from the dialogue?
A. He will keep living on the free meals.
B. He values honest work over free money.
C. He will throw the note away soon.
D. He is angry with the two brothers.
听中定位——would rather earn an honest living。
The tailor looks Henry up and down with a cold eye. “We are very busy today, sir,” he says. “Perhaps you could come back next week.” But when Henry hands him the million-pound note, the tailor’s face changes completely. “Forgive me, sir! I didn’t recognize you. Please, take a seat. We have the finest suits in London — and a full suit, with the very best cloth, costs only... well, we can talk about the price later.”
填空:
1. The tailor says, “We are very ______ today. Perhaps you could ______ ______ ______.”
2. When Henry hands him the note, the tailor’s face ______ ______. “Please, ______ ______ ______.”
1. busy; come back next week。 定位——We are very busy today / Perhaps you could come back next week,属字面细节。
2. changes completely; take a seat。 定位——转折信号词 but 一响,态度必转:but when Henry hands him the note, the tailor’s face changes completely。
Oliver: Do you really think one bank note can change a man’s life, brother?
Roderick: Not the note itself. It’s the way people treat him once they believe he’s rich. Money doesn’t change a man; it changes how others see him.
Oliver: Then why not give him a job instead of a note?
Roderick: Because if I hand him a job, he’ll thank me for my kindness. But if he earns the job himself, he’ll keep his dignity. That’s the bet I’m making.
判断:
1. Oliver
2. Roderick
3. Roderick
4. Oliver
1. F。 原文词句——Oliver 用的是反问句 Do you really think...(你真以为……
2. F。 原文词句——Not the note itself;Money doesn’t change a man。
3. T。 原文词句——It’s the way people treat him once they believe he’s rich。
4. T。 原文词句——why not give him a job instead of a note。
5. T。 原文词句——if he earns the job himself, he’ll keep his dignity. That’s the bet。
Henry: I insist. Please take this. I owe you for the meals, and I want to pay like an honest man.
Owner: Sir, that was nothing. It was an honour to serve you.
Henry: No. The honour is mine. Yesterday I was a beggar in your doorway; today I can stand on my own two feet. That’s worth more than any bank note.
引导:先定位反复出现的两个短语——pay like an honest man 与 stand on my own two feet,再回答下面问题。
问题:
2. Why does Henry say “The honour is mine”?
To Henry, the value of money is not its power to buy respect or luxury, but the dignity it can buy when he has earned it honestly. He values the ability to stand on his own two feet more than the note itself.
评分要点: 须同时出现两点:① 金钱的价值不在于购买力(not its power to buy);② 在于“通过诚实劳动换来的尊严”(dignity earned honestly)。
Because he has paid honestly and can now stand on his own two feet. The dignity of honest work is worth more than the false respect brought by the note.
Dear sister, you won’t believe what has happened since I reached London. A month ago, I arrived with nothing but two pounds in my pocket and a great fear of the future. Today, I walk into any shop in London and the owners bow to me. Why? Because two strange gentlemen gave me a bank note worth a million pounds — and I have not spent a single penny of it. I could buy anything I want, but I don’t. I have learned something stranger than the note itself: people do not look at me, they look at my money. I plan to return the note to the gentlemen tomorrow and keep only the job I have earned. I would rather be poor and honest than rich and feared.
1. Why do shop owners bow to Henry when he enters their shops?
A. Because he is a famous writer.
B. Because they believe he is a millionaire.
C. Because he always pays in gold.
D. Because he has worked for them.
听中定位——because two strange gentlemen gave me a bank note worth a million pounds。
2. Which of the following is NOT true about Henry and the note?
A. He has not spent a single penny of it.
B. He has kept it for about a month.
C. He has already returned it to the gentlemen.
D. He has shown it to shop owners.
听中定位——I plan to return the note to the gentlemen tomorrow。 I have not spent a single penny 一致,是事实;B 与 a month ago 一致,是事实;D 与 shop owners bow to me 的情节一致,是事实。
3. What do people look at when they meet Henry?
A. His face.
B. His clothes.
C. His money.
D. His letter.
听中定位——people do not look at me, they look at my money。 排除干扰——原文用 do not... they...
4. What does Henry plan to do the next day?
A. Spend the note on a new suit.
B. Return the note and keep his job.
C. Buy a shop in London.
D. Write another letter to his sister.
听中定位——I plan to return the note... and keep only the job I have earned。
5. Which word best describes Henry’s attitude towards money at the end?
A. Greedy.
B. Confused.
C. Honest.
D. Fearful.
听中定位——I would rather be poor and honest than rich and feared。
1. 第 2 题:读到 return 就条件反射选 C,没看清题干问 NOT true,且原文是 plan to(计划要做),不是 has returned(已完成)。
2. 第 3 题:只抓住 look at me,漏掉后面的 they look at my money。
1. W: Why did you give the note back? M: Because I want to earn my own living. Q: Why did the man return the note?
A. To buy a house.
B. To earn his own living.
C. To help the brothers.
D. To leave London.
听中定位——Because I want to earn my own living。
2. M: The owner bowed to me but I felt ashamed. W: He bowed to the note, not to you. Q: What does the woman suggest?
A. The owner respected Henry.
B. The owner respected the note.
C. Henry was proud.
D. Henry was rich.
听中定位——He bowed to the note, not to you。 排除干扰——A 与 not to you 相反;C、D 不是女士观点。
3. W: What did you learn in London? M: People look at my money, not at me. Q: What did the man learn?
A. Money is everything.
B. People judge him by money.
C. London is beautiful.

Unit 5 The Value of Money
Waiter: Good evening, sir. A table for one?
Henry: Yes, please. I’m really hungry. What’s today’s special?
Waiter: Roast beef, sir. And we have fine soup, if you like.
Henry: Roast beef and soup, then. (He sits down and looks around nervously.)
1) What did Henry order?
2) What was the waiter’s attitude toward Henry?
3) Where does this conversation take place?

Who / Where / What
Conflict / Turn
Result / Attitude
Who / Where / Want:
Conflict / Turn:
Result / Attitude:

从 sir 到 our most valued guest,用词升级即态度反转。
听 but / not... 强调句

1. The tailor says, “We are very ______ today. Perhaps you could ______ ______ ______.”
2. When Henry hands him the note, the tailor’s face ______ ______. “Please, ______ ______ ______.”
____________________
____________________
Oliver: Do you really think one bank note can change a man’s life, brother?
Roderick: Not the note itself. It’s the way people treat him once they believe he’s rich. Money doesn’t change a man; it changes how others see him.
Oliver: Then why not give him a job instead of a note?
Roderick: Because if I hand him a job, he’ll thank me for my kindness. But if he earns the job himself, he’ll keep his dignity. That’s the bet I’m making.
1. Oliver
2. Roderick
3. Roderick
4. Oliver

引导:先定位反复出现的两个短语——pay like an honest man 与 stand on my own two feet,再回答。
2. Why does Henry say “The honour is mine”?

Dear sister, you won’t believe what has happened since I reached London. A month ago, I arrived with nothing but two pounds in my pocket and a great fear of the future. Today, I walk into any shop in London and the owners bow to me. Why? Because two strange gentlemen gave me a bank note worth a million pounds — and I have not spent a single penny of it. I could buy anything I want, but I don’t. I have learned something stranger than the note itself: people do not look at me, they look at my money.
