B A 74-year-old man is pounding the pavement (四处奔走) in the hope of finding a kidney (肾) for his sick wife. Wayne Winters began walking along the streets near his home in Farr West, Utah, early this month, with a sandwich board containing an unusual request. “Need Kidney for Wife,” the sign reads. Winters’ phone number and his wife Deanne’s blood type are also included. Deanne has severe kidney failure and is in need of a transplant (移植). Desperate to do something to help his sick wife, Winters walks along the streets, wearing a new suit and new shoes, and carrying his sign with a plea for a kidney. Though he doesn’t walk fast, Winters’ unusual method of tracking down a kidney for Deanne has attracted a lot of attention. In addition to the motorists and passers-by who have seen Winters out walking miles a day, his request for a kidney has now hit the Internet and attracted the attention of millions more people. Winters said he was inspired to pound the pavement on behalf of his wife after seeing a story online about another man who did the same thing and got national attention. Rush hour is his favorite time to walk up and down the streets because drivers are forced to slow down. Though he hasn’t had any success yet, Winters remains confident he will find a kidney for Deanne and says he won’t rest until he makes it. Winters has stated even after a match for Deanne is found, he will continue to raise awareness about kidney donation because it is now his “life mission”. In fact, the back of his current sign includes a message aimed at helping others in need. It reads, “1,000 kidneys are needed in Utah and Idaho.” The National Kidney Foundation reports the average wait for an individual’s first kidney transplant is over three and a half years, and can vary depending on health, compatibility and availability of organs. The organization also notes over 3,000 new patients are added to the kidney waiting list each month, and 13 people die each day while waiting for a lifesaving kidney transplant. 4. Why is Winters walking along the streets? A. To help his sick wife. B. To do some exercise. C. To look for something he has lost. D. To appreciate the sights of the city. 5. What encouraged Winters to walk along the streets? A. Others’ advice. B. A moving movie. C. A story online. D. His wife’s request. 6. Which of the following can best describe Winters? A. Positive and kind. B. Impatient and unlucky. C. Passive and anxious. D. Active and successful. 7. What is the main idea of the last paragraph? A. A kidney transplant is a life-saving operation. B. Getting a suitable kidney for a patient isn’t easy. C. New patients are added to the kidney waiting list. D. Many factors influence the success of a kidney transplant. C “Then would you invest (投资) short-term or long-term?” asks Jennifer Varga, a teacher at Memorial Middle School in New Jersey. Personal-finance courses targeted at students are being popularized across America, promoted by rules requiring such instruction. Since 2020, 17 states have adopted (正式通过) laws that make taking a financial course necessary for completing high school, bringing the total up to 25. That figure will probably grow. Students in these classes learn not only how to save their earnings in order to have something to invest in the first place, but also how to solve simple economic problems. Courses cover comparison shopping and the basics of how to properly bank, budget, handle credit and pay for college. Young people badly need these courses. Few teenagers score highly on financial knowledge assessments (评估). Are personal-finance courses the answer? For a long time, the studies said no. Many analyses, including one cited over 2,500 times, claimed that financial courses were futile. The analyses made intuitive sense, as many teenagers have yet to work or manage a household. But more recent findings have shown an opposite picture. Research has gotten better and the courses themselves have also improved. Studies that use the gold standard of investigation have found the courses are working well and useful in improving financial knowledge and behavior. The newest survey conducted in 33 countries found people who take these courses master the content better. And students who take personal-finance courses borrow less money. If they do borrow for college, they choose low-cost options. Some worry about adding one more graduation requirement to the long list, but schools are willing to remove courses with less direct bearing on life skills. “When I was 20, it would have been nice to have this class,” Ms. Varga says. She got into some financial trouble as a young adult. “I want them to be better than my generation.” 8. What do we know about personal-finance courses in US high schools? A. They are limited to high-income areas. B. They are being gradually removed in many states. C. They are becoming more widely required. D. They are being replaced by advanced math courses. 9. What do students learn in personal-finance courses? A. How to start a financial career. B. The history of banking and economics. C. How to become professional investors. D. Basic financial skills for everyday life. 10. What does the underlined word “futile” in Paragraph 4 probably mean? A. Nonexistent. B. Imperfect. C. Ineffective. D. Irregular. 11. What do the survey results indicate? A. The graduation standards are high. B. More attention is needed to finance. C. More students borrow for college. D. The courses have lasting value. D A new outdoor fabric (织物) stores energy by day and then lights up at night. Being tested in a city park, this totally “cool” fabric has attracted interest for its many urban uses. This is the invention of Anai Green, an industrial and product designer based in Tel Aviv, Israel. She designed a fabric that includes organic and solar photovoltaic cells The cells capture sunlight and store the energy in strips with LEDs. This allows the fabric to shade public space by day. When night falls, these strips light up. Green said, “We use LumiWeave to light public space without carbon emissions, making the lighting all-natural. And we spread light in the area we want to light only.” The system was designed to adapt to all weather conditions and can continue to provide lighting even after three days without sunlight. In addition, you simply put LumiWeave up and the sun will do the work. This in itself saves 50 percent of the cost of building standard lighting, and it saves 100 percent on the electricity bills. This is great news for cities. Tel Aviv, Green’s hometown, is trying out LumiWeave in AtidimPark. The mayor of Tel Aviv, Ron Huldai, is making efforts to address climate change. “LumiWeave will turn out to be a groundbreaking project,” Huldai said. The mayor added that LumiWeave is especially important as it solves the issue of shading urban areas and uses clean energy. The new fabric can be fixed atop bike paths, in children’s parks and in walking areas. Many big cities in Israel are planning on adopting LumiWeave. As there is also use for the fabric in outdoor sitting areas of restaurants and hotels, Green has developed a LumiWeave parasol “We are now developing the possibility of controlling it from the phone — we’re creating an application,” Green said. LumiWeave provides an ideal solution for urban parks and gardens. We hope that it will soon be lighting up night skies around the world. 12. How does the new outdoor fabric work? A. By turning household waste into clean energy. B. By using photovoltaic cells to promote plant growth. C. By providing shade and energy in an eco-friendly way. D. By changing its temperatures according to the weather. 13. Which of the following can be the feature of LumiWeave? A. It’s functional and cost-effective. B. It takes up a lot of public space. C. It’s equipped with self-repair materials. D. It can broadcast weather conditions more quickly. 14. What’s Ron Huldai’s attitude towards LumiWeave? A. Worried. B. Doubtful. C. Unclear. D. Supportive. 15. What can we infer about LumiWeave from Paragraph 5? A. It may cause safety concerns. B. It will be further developed for wider use. C. It will be replaced by more intelligent devices. D. It can reduce the waiting time in some places. Moving to a new country is exciting but challenging. Ella’s teacher, Mrs. Smith, along with her best friend, Lily, immediately thought of Ella as the perfect lead dancer for the performance. Although they both encouraged Ella to join, she hesitated. The idea of performing on stage terrified (使恐惧) her. “What if I forget the steps or make a mistake in front of everyone?” she thought to herself, and couldn’t shake the feeling that she might mess up. Ella’s teacher told her, “You have great talent, Ella. You should share it with others. Don’t let fear stop you.” Despite the encouragement, Ella remained fearful. She loved dancing but hated the idea of dancing in front of a large audience. The thought of the bright lights and the eyes of the crowd staring at her made her feel overwhelmed At home, Ella shared her worries with her parents. They listened carefully and comforted her. “Ella, you’re stronger than you think,” her mother said. “You’ve learned to dance for several years. Just do your best. We believe you can make it.” Her father added, “Don’t worry about mistakes. They’re part of learning. All you should do is focus on it.” Their words gave Ella some confidence, and she finally decided to join the performance. Then, Ella began practicing every day, spending hours perfecting her dance moves. She practiced in front of the mirror, repeating the dance until she felt more comfortable. Even though she was still nervous, Ella overcame (克服) her fear, determined to do her best. The night of the performance arrived, and Ella felt a mix of excitement and anxiety. 4. C 9. D 10. C 11. 根据第二段“Since 2020, 17 states have adopted (正式通过) laws that make taking a financial course necessary for completing high school, bringing the total up to 25. That figure will probably grow.(自2020年以来,已有17个州通过法律,要求完成高中学业必须修读金融课程,使总数达到25个。这一数字预计还会继续增加)”可知,个人理财课程正在被更广泛地要求。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“Courses cover comparison shopping and the basics of how to properly bank, budget, handle credit and pay for college.(课程涵盖比价购物,以及如何正确储蓄、制定预算、管理信用和支付大学学费的基础知识)”可知,学生在个人理财课程中学习日常生活中的基本财务技能。 根据画线词前文“Few teenagers score highly on financial knowledge assessments (评估). Are personal-finance courses the answer? For a long time, the studies said no.(很少有青少年在财务知识评估中取得高分。个人理财课程是解决之道吗?长期以来,研究结果一直是否定的)”和“as many teenagers have yet to work or manage a household”可知,研究表明因为很多青少年还没有工作或管理过家庭,个人理财课程并不能解决问题,即没有效果、没有帮助。由此推测,画线词意为“无效果的”,与ineffective同义。 【11题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“The newest survey conducted in 33 countries found people who take these courses master the content better. And students who take personal-finance courses borrow less money. If they do borrow for college, they choose low-cost options.(一项针对33个国家进行的最新调查显示,参加这些课程的人对学习内容掌握得更好。此外,修读个人理财课程的学生借款金额更少,即使需要为大学贷款,他们也倾向于选择低成本的选项)”可知,这些课程在增加学生的财务知识和提升相关行为上有持久的效果。 D A new outdoor fabric (织物) stores energy by day and then lights up at night. 12. C 13. A 14. D 15. As she stood backstage, her heart raced. The bright lights and large audience definitely made her nervous, but she kept reminding herself of her mother’s words, “Just do your best.” It was time for Ella and her classmates to perform. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ When the music ended, the audience erupted in cheers. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】范文 It was time for Ella and her classmates to perform. Stepping onto the stage, Ella felt her heart pounding violently. But recalling her parents’ encouragement, Ella tried to steady her breathing, reassuring herself that she would do her best. Closing her eyes, she let the rhythm of the music guide her dance moves. Gradually, the tension in her body gave way to relaxation and calmness, which made her focus on the joy of performing rather than the fear of making mistakes. Following her lead, Ella’s classmates danced gracefully as well, captivating the audience. When the music ended, the audience erupted in cheers. Hearing the thunderous applause, Ella felt a wave of relief and pride wash over her. Meanwhile, her classmates gathered around her, congratulating one another. Her flawless performance was a testament to her triumph over the fear that once held her back. No longer burdened by self-doubt, Ella clearly realized that she had faced her fear bravely and become more confident. Whatever setbacks she might encounter in the future, Ella held a firm belief that with determination and practice, she could overcome any challenge that stood in her way to success. 词汇激活: 行为类 ①尝试:try/attempt ②想起:recall/remember 情绪类 ①勇敢地:bravely/valorously ②自信的:confident/assured 【点睛】[高分句型1] Stepping onto the stage, Ella felt her heart pounding violently.(运用了现在分词作状语) [高分句型2] No longer burdened by self-doubt, Ella clearly realized that she had faced her fear bravely and become more confident.(运用了过去分词作状语、that引导宾语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
