Over millions of years, as climates change and mountains rise, new dry and wet areas appear. But within the last hundred years, deserts have grown very fast. This is partly because of natural changes, but most of the responsibility (责任) for creating deserts goes to humans. People are harming the Earth. For example, scientists tell people how important plants are for stopping land from becoming a desert, but many people don’t pay enough attention to plants. Humans can make deserts, but they can also stop them from getting bigger. Some places on Earth don’t get much rain, but they still don’t become deserts. This is because some green plants grow there. Small green plants and grass are very important to dry places. Plants help prevent the land from becoming drier. Plants don’t let the wind blow the soil away. When a bit of rain falls, the plants hold the water. Without plants, the land can become a desert more easily. Algeria, a country in North Africa, is planting a green belt of trees along the edge of the Sahara Desert to stop the sand. In China, too, windbreaks (防风林) are being built in the northwest to keep the desert from growing. But deserts still threaten (威胁) the world. The world’s desert area accounts for about 20% of the total land area, and it is still getting bigger by about 60,000 square kilometres each year. Can we stop the spread of the world’s deserts and save the land that is so essential to humans? Yes, we can, and we must. 1.What causes deserts to grow in the last hundred years? 2.Why do some places on Earth not become deserts although they don’t get much rain? 3.What does the underlined word “essential” mean in Paragraph 3? 4.What does the writer think is the best way to stop deserts from becoming bigger? 5.Do you think it is important to plant more trees? Why? Born in 1945, Nan Rendong was Jilin Province's top scorer of science in gaokao, and he finally entered Tsinghua University in 1963. In the early 1990s, an idea got into Nan's mind: he wanted to build a radio telescope (望远镜) 500 metres across. The biggest one in China then was less than 30 metres across. To realize the dream, Nan gave up a well-paid job at one of the world's top scientific research centres and returned to China in 1994. The first challenge for Nan and his team was finding a proper place — a problem that took the scientist 12 years to solve. Finally, when Nan discovered a large crater (坑) in Guizhou Province, he knew he had found it. The cable-net construction (索网结构建设) of the telescope was another challenge. Nan and his team had nothing to learn from and nobody to ask for help. “During every failure, Nan was there, trying around the clock to find out a solution,” said Jiang Peng, Nan's helper. “Most of the scientists working on the FAST project focus on different fields, but Nan knew everything.” After more than twenty years, the project was successfully completed when FAST, the largest radio telescope in the world, opened in 2016. FAST can receive signals (信号) from 10 billion light years away, and with it, Nan hoped to discover more secrets of the universe and life. “The reason humans turned from lower forms of life to what we are now is that we've kept exploring,” Nan said. Sadly, FAST, also called the China Sky Eye, had just started to “watch” the universe, while Nan closed his eyes forever. 1.Why did Nan Rendong return to China in 1994? 2.What were the problems or challenges Nan faced? 3.How was Nan Rendong in Jiang Peng's eyes? 4.What great value does FAST have? 5.What can we learn from Nan Rendong? Chen-Ning Yang, a famous physicist, passed away in Beijing on October 18, 2025, at the age of 103. His life was full of achievements in physics and love for the motherland. Yang was born in Hefei, Anhui Province in 1922. At a young age, he showed great interest in science. During the war years, he moved with his family to many places and finally entered Southwest Associated University. There was a shortage of books and experimental equipment. This experience taught him to work hard even when conditions were poor. In 1942, he graduated from the Department of Physics at Southwest Associated University. After that, he went to the United States for further study and got his doctor’s degree. In 1956, Yang, together with Tsung-Dao Lee, put forward a very important idea—Parity Non-conservation It changed the way people thought about physics. It was a big surprise. Scientists were shocked at first and some even didn’t believe it. For this, Yang and Lee won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1957. Another important thing Yang did was developing the Yang-Mills gauge theory (杨 - 米尔斯规范场理论) with R. L. Mills in 1954. It became the base for the development of particle physics (粒子物理学) later on. Even though Yang lived abroad for a long time, he always cared about his homeland, China. After the improvement of China-US relations in 1971, he was among the first overseas scholars (学者) to visit China. He gave talks in many American universities to introduce China to the world. His actions encouraged more scholars to come back and work for their country. Since 1999, he has worked as a professor at Tsinghua University. Even in his eighties, he still taught students and tried his best to train new physics talents. Chen-Ning Yang’s life was like a circle. It started in China, then he went to the world stage, and finally, he returned to his homeland. His spirit of always seeking knowledge and his love for his country will inspire us all. 1.Why was Yang’s experience in Southwest Associated University meaningful? 2.How old was Yang when he won the Nobel Prize in Physics? 3.What role did the Yang-Mills gauge theory play in physics? 4.How did Yang encourage more overseas scholars to return to China? 5.What can you learn from Chen-Ning Yang? They are all cakes shaped like ancient treasures. However, none of them are real—they're all cakes. 2.答案:Her work won the world's attention at an international competition. That year, she made a cake in the shape of the Marquis Yi Chime Bells, and took it to an international cake competition.
