Wang Xizhi was born in Linyi of Shandong Province. He served as a civil official in the Eastern Jin Dynasty and was a famous calligrapher. Wang is still known as the Sage of Calligraphy (书圣).
Wang’s uncles and cousins were all famous calligraphers of their time. At the age of seven, Wang began a systematic (系统性的) study of calligraphy under a female calligrapher, Wei Shuo. He kept copying the Wei-style calligraphy for years and learned much from the works of other calligraphers.
To practise calligraphy, wherever Wang went, he would try to find out the styles of previous (先前的) calligraphers and copy them, collecting many calligraphic materials. There were writing brushes, ink sticks and ink stones in his study, yard and even outside the toilet. Whenever he thought of a well-structured character, he would write it down right away.
Wang wrote with smoothness and grandeur (宏伟). Some people have described his calligraphy as “the dragon jumping over the heavenly gate; the tiger lying in the phoenix palace (龙跃天门,虎卧凤阙)”. Wang was good at many types of calligraphy but the xingshu-style Preface to the Orchid Pavilion Collection (《兰亭集序》) is the most famous of his works.
There is a story behind this work. In 353, Wang invited 41 famous people to the Orchid Pavilion. They enjoyed wine and wrote poems by the winding stream. The poems were collected, and Wang wrote Preface to the Orchid Pavilion Collection, describing how happy these men were. Wang’s talent in calligraphy was fully displayed in this work.
The Song Dynasty scholar Mi Fu called Preface to the Orchid Pavilion Collection the world’s best work in xingshu style. It’s said that Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty treasured the work and had it buried in his tomb (陵墓).

Born in Shanghai in 1926, Gu Fangzhou faced a difficult time when his father died suddenly in 1931. At school, he was often made fun of for being poor. Yet he got over these difficulties with his mother’s support and entered Peking University Medical School in 1944.
In 1955, a serious polio (小儿麻痹症) outbreak happened in Nantong and spread rapidly (迅速地) across China, leaving countless children paralyzed (瘫痪的) or dead. Two years later, Gu answered the call, leading a team and beginning to research the polio vaccine (疫苗) in Kunming. However, this process was full of challenges.
When the vaccine entered human tests, Gu tried a bottle of the vaccine solution to see its effects in person. Later, he took another brave step: he vaccinated his newborn son to further prove the vaccine was safe for children. “If we don’t believe in what we make, how can others believe in it?” he said. Soon, his team members also volunteered their own children. Luckily, all children vaccinated remained healthy.
However, ending polio needed getting over another problem. The liquid (液体) vaccine needed to be kept at 2℃ ~8℃, which was nearly impossible in the 1960s in China. Gu’s team solved this by successfully creating a sugar-coated pill, which was easy to transport, had a longer shelf life (保质期), and was gladly accepted by children. Gradually, the “sugar pill” reached faraway parts of China, and the polio patients became fewer and fewer.
The most exciting moment came in 2000. Gu, then 74, signed the official paper proving polio was gone in China. Though this was a great achievement, he often said, “I only did one thing in my life, and that was to make a small sugar pill.”
Gu passed away in 2019 at the age of 92, but his efforts continue to be honored. In early 2026, UNESCO agreed to include the 100th anniversary (周年纪念) of his birth on its 2026-2027 celebration list, memorizing a life given to protecting children and letting his spirit be carried on through the ages.

Have you ever had someone who believed in you when you didn’t believe in yourself? If your answer is yes, you must have seen the power of inspiration. In turn, when you inspire others, you don’t just offer help — you also benefit.
Inspiring others is very meaningful. For example, when you encourage a classmate who feels down, you’re learning to be a patient and kind person. Also, watching people you’ve encouraged realize their dreams is a wonderful feeling. When you give your time and energy out of kindness, you feel proud of yourself because you realize you’re making a positive difference in the world.
In addition, inspiration makes people who are inspired feel like they’re part of something greater than just living from day to day. Then they feel hopeful. Besides, when people feel inspired, they become more confident and energetic to do meaningful work. A student who feels inspired may put more effort into learning. In a team or business, inspiration can lead to better results or sales.
Lastly, inspiration helps leaders (领导者). When good leaders inspire their team members, they create trust among them. Team members start believing in each other’s abilities, which helps build lasting relationships. At the same time, leaders usually inspire others by sharing their values and future plans. This action helps them discover their own strengths and weaknesses. They also learn how well they communicate. If people don’t respond (反应) well, they can improve their way of leading.
You don’t need to be famous to inspire others. Start by being a good example. Listen more than you talk. Give people clear goals and directions. And remember — what really matters is others, not yourself. Your true care for them can change everything.

Scientists, famous artists, or great thinkers are often shown as perfect people on TV or social media. Because of this, many people grow up believing that only those without any faults are admirable. However, in my opinion, admirable people do not need to be perfect to get respect.
First, admirable people may not have pleasant personalities. Great leaders may behave strangely or impolitely sometimes, but these flaws (缺陷) do not mean they aren’t worth admiring. In Chinese history, the famous general (将军) Zuo Zongtang was known for getting angry easily and being too proud of himself, often arguing with other officials, yet he helped China get Xinjiang back and protect the nation.
Second, admirable people do not need to be good at everything. Many people expect admirable people to be all-round talents, but that doesn’t always happen. For example, the great doctor Li Shizhen failed the keju three times, but his lifelong work on medicine produced the great book Bencao Gangmu. It has helped save so many people’s lives.
Finally, respect comes from taking action to make up for past mistakes. We often run away when making mistakes, while admirable people choose to make things right. The Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel created dynamite (炸药) to help with house building and engineering work. But when he knew it was used in wars, he realized his mistake. So he left a will (遗嘱) to give away all his money to create the Nobel Prizes. Today, these prizes continue to encourage great scientific discoveries and honour those working on bringing countries together.
All in all, great people may not be perfect. Yet learning from their imperfect lives encourages us to face our own weaknesses and improve ourselves. Just as Confucius said, “When you see a person of worth, learn from them; when you see someone unworthy, examine yourself inside.”
Admirable People don’t Need to Be Perfect
They may have unpleasant personalities.
· Zuo Zongtang’s bad temper and pride led to poor 1 .
· He helped get Xinjiang back and protect the country.
They may not be good at everything.
· Li Shizhen 2 the keju.
· He was expert in medicine and produced the great book Bencao Gangmu.
They make mistakes but are brave to make up for them.
· Alfred Nobel felt sorry when knowing his 3 was used in wars.
· He left a will to give away all his money to set up the Nobel Prizes for 4 .
☆ We should accept that admirable people aren’t perfect and be a 5 learner.

难度理由:典型利弊辩论类阅读,区分正反两方观点极易混淆;需要区分支持者、反对者不同立场;多处抽象同义改写:hardly anything to do with→little connection;see the bad side→see the world negatively;同时考察主旨标题归纳,很容易出现立场判断失误,是 B 卷易错题型。
Reading Lu Xun’s works has become a shared experience for Chinese students. From a young age, we have studied his works, such as My Old Home and The True Story of Ah Q. We have also come to know Runtu and Kong Yiji through his writing. Lu Xun sharply (尖锐地) showed social problems, driving people to think and reflect. However, some students today argue that we should reduce the number of his works in textbooks.
They say they have been studying his works every term since Grade Six. Though he is a great writer, students often miss the deeper meaning of his words, and his ideas are always too critical (批判的). These readers worry that Lu Xun’s critical way of writing might influence how young people see the world, making them always see the bad side of things. They suggest that the textbook should include articles from the past to the present, while ensuring the content keeps up with the times. Zheng Yun, a student from Xiamen, said, “I really think the ideas and social background (背景) in Lu Xun’s article My Old Home have hardly anything to do with the lives of today’s teenagers.”
On the other hand, many students strongly support the idea that Lu Xun’s works are worth studying. They believe that a Chinese textbook should not only help students study Chinese but also provide them with challenging literature to read. Lu Xun’s works are just what the Chinese textbooks need, no matter how long ago they came out. More importantly, Lu Xun shows deep care for the future of China and its people in his writings. His works have shaped the thinking of young people for generations (一代代). As Ye Zibing, a student from Wuhan, said, “I am always spellbound (着迷的) when I read My Old Home. Some sentences in it, such as, ‘Actually, the earth had no roads to begin with, but when many people walk on it, a road appears,’ are so powerful that they remind us to be brave and move forward, creating our own way.”
Should We Include 1 Lu Xun’s Works in Textbooks?
YES!
* Students find his works too deep and critical.
* His critical writing style could lead young readers to see the world too 2 .
* Textbooks should include articles from across time periods while ensuring the content keeps up with the times.
◎Zheng Yun believes that the ideas and social background in My Old Home have 3 to the lives of today’s teenagers.
NO!
* His works achieve the 4 of a Chinese textbook.
◎Help students learn Chinese.
◎Provide challenging literature.
* His writing shows great care for the future of China and its people.
* His works have shaped the thinking of young people for generations.
◎As Ye Zibing said, a sentence from My Old Home reminds young people to have the 5 to move forward and create their own path.
