As we all know, having friends is really important in our lives. But of course, there are also great friendships in books—and some of them are very famous.
In the Harry Potter books, Harry’s two great friends are Hermione and Ron. Harry depends on them a lot, and they often help him in difficult situations. And though they don’t always agree on everything, they’re friends for life.
Back in the nineteenth century, an American writer called Mark Twain created two characters called Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. They lived in the southern USA near the Mississippi River. Together, they had problems with their families and with slavery (奴隶制). Through their adventures, they formed a close friendship that helped them overcome challenges.
Also in the nineteenth century, in Britain, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle created one of the most famous detectives ever—Sherlock Holmes. His friend, Dr Watson, became very famous too—and Watson always tried to help Holmes, supporting him through all of his hard cases.
In both real life and books, we can see how important friendship is. Friends help each other when times are uneasy and share happy moments. Whether in stories or in real life, good friends are something we should always value.
18. Tom Sawyer’s friend is _________.
A. Huckleberry Finn B. Ron C. Dr Watson D. Hermione
19. Sherlock Holmes’ friend is _________.

B. How friends help each other in hard times.
C. The differences between friendship in life and in books.
D. The importance of having good friends in life and in books.

①The water hyacinth (水葫芦) grows in tropical (热带的) countries. It has beautiful purple-blue flowers, but everybody hates it.
②Millions and millions of these plants grow in rivers and lakes. Sometimes the plants become so thick that people can walk on them. People cannot travel in boats on the water, and they cannot fish in it. The plants stop the water from moving. Then the water carries diseases. Farmers cannot use the water on their land.
③Now scientists think that water hyacinths can be useful. The plants are really a free crop. No one has to take care of them. They just grow and grow and grow. What can farmers use them for?
④Some fish like to eat them. Farmers can grow these fish in the lakes and rivers. Workers can collect and cut the plants with machines. Then they can also make fertilizer to make their crops grow better. They can also make feed (饲料) for their farm animals.
⑤Maybe it will be possible to make methane gas (沼气) for energy. Methane gas can be made from plants. We burn gas from petroleum (石油) for energy. Then poor tropical countries will not have to buy so much expensive petroleum. Maybe in the future people will love the water hyacinth instead of hating it.
22. Where may the water hyacinth grow?
A. Germany. B. Russia. C. Thailand. D. Canada.
23. The underlined word “fertilizer” in paragraph 4 means “________” in Chinese.

China’s flower culture has lasted thousands of years. The word “hua” in Chinese meant “flower” at first. With rich kinds of flowers, China is called “Mother of the World’s Gardens” by British plant expert Wilson. Flowers are not only beautiful, but also useful.
Chinese people have cooked with flowers for a long time. Records show Shang Dynasty cooks used flowers in meals. Poet Qu Yuan ate chrysanthemums (菊花) during the Warring States Period. In the Song Dynasty, people enjoyed plum flowers (梅花) with rice porridge. Today, many places keep this tradition. The Dai people cook banana flowers, while Shaanxi locals love fried locust flowers (刺槐花). Eating flowers isn’t just about taste-it connects people with nature’s seasons.
Flowers also carried deep feelings. Ancient Chinese grew flowers in gardens and pots to lift their moods. During the Tang Dynasty, the flower markets were lively. Poets wrote about flowers to express emotions. Tao Yuanming dreamed of a “Peach Blossom Spring”, and Zhou Dunyi praised the lotus. Flowers even got poetic names-peony meant “Jiang Li” (soon to part), lotus meant “pure friend”.
People also used flowers wisely in the past. They marked months by flower seasons, made medicines from flowers, and used them in beautiful products. From food to art, flowers colour every part of Chinese culture beautifully.

Last weekend, I went to a small park near my home with my family. We walked on the grass path, and I saw many colorful flowers. I also heard birds singing in the trees. My little brother and I even chased a butterfly for a while.
At noon, we sat under a big tree to eat our lunch. The wind blew gently, and it felt very cool. I picked up some fallen leaves and made a small picture with them.
From this trip, I learned that nature is full of beauty. We should protect trees and flowers around us. Only by doing this can we always enjoy the green and happy life.
