According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), hundreds of marine (海洋的) species across the world come under endangered and critically endangered categories. Some of the endangered and recognizable marine species are named here.
Kemp’s Ridley Sea Turtle
The Kemp’s Ridley Sea Turtle, also known as the Atlantic Ridley Sea Turtle, is endangered as the rarest and smallest sea turtle.
Distributed throughout the Gulf of Mexico and U.S. Atlantic seaboard, they gather off the coast in northeastern Mexico and come ashore in large groups to lay eggs every year. As marine reptiles (爬行动物), they are threatened by oil spills, lack of food and marine pollution.
Vaquita
As a rare marine mammal, Vaquita is on the edge of extinction only a half-century after its first sighting.
Extensive fishing in the Gulf of California has endangered this marine species, resulting in a gradual drop in population since the 1940s. According to reports, there are only a dozen of these marine mammals left in the world since the percentage of decline in their population was as much as 90% since 2011.
Whale
Fin Whale is the second-largest mammal on the planet after Blue Whale and it is also a victim of hunting. According to estimates, the global population of Fin Whale ranges from below 100,000 to around 119,000.
Humpback Whale, another whale species, has also been listed as an endangered marine species. Before the introduction of the whaling moratorium (暂停) in 1966, the species was hunted for its fur, while the population dropped by 90%. Currently, around 2,500 Humpback Whales survive in the world.
Hawaiian Monk Seal
A native of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, Hawaiian Monk Seal is one of the earless seals who live on warm beaches, unlike other seals.
According to recent research, only 1,400 Hawaiian Monk Seals remain on the Islands. These seals are mainly threatened by predators like tiger sharks. Besides, other reasons like habitat loss and food limitation also contribute to their critical situation.
21. Why do Kemp’s Ridley Sea Turtles land on the beach in large groups?
A. To nest. B. To reproduce. C. To avoid attack. D. To hunt foods.
22. What is the major threat to Hawaiian Monk Seal?
A. Global warming. B. Lack of food. C. Natural enemies. D. Habitat pollution.
23. Which of the following is the most critically endangered species?

A Fish and Wildlife Service proposal would protect the whitebark pine as an endangered species. Whitebark pines can live for up to 1,000 years and grow at elevations (海拔) as high as 12,000 feet. Environmentalists had requested the government in 1991 and again in 2008 to protect the trees. A nonnative fungus (真菌) has been killing whitebark pines for a century. More recently, the trees have proved vulnerable (易受伤的) to tiny insects that have killed large areas of forest.
The whitebark pines have almost disappeared in some areas, including the eastern edge of Yellowstone National Park, where they are a source of food for threatened grizzly bears (灰熊). This makes the government’s declaration of the Yellowstone area’s grizzly bears as a restored species a lie.
After being blamed for not taking steps to protect the trees, wildlife officials in 2011 admitted that whitebark pines needed protection, but they didn’t act rapidly, saying other species faced more immediate threats.
A lawyer for the Natural Resources Defense Council, which made the formal request for protection in 2008, expressed his disappointment that it took so long but said the proposal was still worth celebrating.
The government’s proposal described the threats to the trees as immediate and said the whitebark pines were one of many plants expected to be harmed as climate change moves faster than they can adapt. “Whitebark pines survive at high elevations already, so there is little remaining habitat in many areas for the species to move to higher elevations in response to warmer temperatures,” Fish and Wildlife Service officials wrote.
Government officials are working with researchers and private groups on plans to gather seed from trees, grow them in greenhouses and then plant them back on the landscape, according to Fish and Wildlife Service biologist Amy Nicholas. A proposal of that nationwide restoration is expected by the end of this year. “We do have options to restore this species,” Nicholas said.
28. What do we know about whitebark pines?
A. They are long-lived, high-elevation trees.
B. They have a strong resistance to nonnative fungi.
C. The government used to care about protecting them.
D. They and small insects depend on each other for survival.
29. What makes the government’s announcement about grizzly bears a lie?
A. Grizzly bears are no longer threatened.
B. The whitebark pines have almost disappeared.
C. The population of grizzly bears has increased greatly.
D. The government is actually doing nothing to protect bears.
30. Which of the following would the lawyer agree with?
A. Better late than never. B. All roads lead to Rome.
C. Never do things by halves. D. The first step is the hardest.
31. What is Amy Nicholas’ attitude toward saving whitebark pines?
A. Irresponsible. B. Doubtful. C. Optimistic. D. Uncertain.
D
New research by scientists at the University of Bristol explains how a “stop-start” pattern of evolution, governed by environmental change, could explain why crocodiles (鳄鱼) have changed so little since the age of the dinosaurs.
Crocodiles today look very similar to ones from 200 million years ago. There are also very few species alive today—just 25. Other animals such as lizards and birds have achieved a diversity of many thousands of species in the same amount of time. Prehistory also saw types of crocodile we don’t see today, including giants as big as dinosaurs,plant-eaters,fast runners and snakelike forms that lived in the sea.
The rate of their evolution is generally slow, but occasionally they evolve more apace because the environment has changed. In particular, this new research suggests that their evolution speeds up when the climate is warmer, and that their body size increases.
Lead author Dr. Max Stockdale said,“Our analysis used a machine learning algorithm (算法) to estimate rates of evolution. Evolutionary rate is the amount of change that has taken place over a given amount of time, which we can work out by comparing measurements from fossils and taking into account how old they are. For our study we measured body size, which is important because it interacts with how fast animals grow, how much food they need, how big their populations are and how likely they are to die out.”
The findings show that the limited diversity of crocodiles and their apparent lack of evolution result from a slow evolutionary rate. It seems the crocodiles arrived with an already efficient and versatile (多功能的) body plan that doesn’t require changes. This versatility could be one explanation why crocodiles survived the meteor (流星) impact at the end of the Cretaceous period,in which the dinosaurs died out. Crocodiles generally develop better in warm conditions because they cannot control their body temperature and require warmth from the environment.
32. What do we know about prehistoric crocodiles?
A. They fed mainly on plants and lived in the ocean.
B. They evolved much faster than contemporary birds.
C. They were more diverse in species than present crocodiles.
D. They differed greatly in appearance from present crocodiles.
33. What does the underlined word “apace” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Naturally. B. Steadily.
C. Separately. D. Quickly.
34. The body size of a crocodile has an effect on its ________.
A. growth rate B. food choice
C. length of life D. speed of evolution
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. What determines crocodiles’ body size
B. Why crocodiles have changed so little
C. How crocodiles have evolved since their existence
D. What effects climate has on the evolution of crocodiles

A recent Gallup study found that a majority of working people said they were more angry, stressed and worried in 2018. The fact is that we don’t relax enough and enjoy our leisure time enough.
So what’s the fix? Maybe it’s making the best use of the potential leisure time we do have, particularly our weekends. It feels like a lot of us just use Saturday and Sunday to make up for work and sleep. ____36____. Below are some relaxation tips and a few hints on how to have a good weekend.
Take some time away from your phone!
It is called “screen/life balance.” _____37_____. Maybe checking your phone for texts or emails only once an hour, instead of all the time. If you want to be really bold, try leaving your phone at home during certain weekend activities.
Stay in the moment!
Find ways to make your mind focus on where you are in the moment, what you’re doing right then and there, and what it all feels like. “Five senses meditation” is a great way to achieve the stage of focus. To do this, get still and focus on what you’re sensing. Notice five things you can see. Then four that you can feel. Three that you can hear. Two you can taste. One you can smell. _____38_____. And sometimes you don’t have to follow that playbook exactly, just do whatever you want to do with the five senses.
____39____.
A lot of us fall into the trap of saving weekend work we have to complete for Sunday evening, which means Sunday can be pretty stressful and feel like Monday. To avoid those “Sunday scaries,” maybe get those few hours of work done at some other point during the weekend, so that the last thing you do during your weekend can be something actually fun.
Focus on making new memories, rather than just repeating the workweek.
To make the most of quality time with friends and loved ones, make it a point to talk about work as little as possible. We should redefine our hangouts: make new memories and learn new things about the people you care about._____40_____. Maybe ask your friends to tell you a memory of their first date or the story of their favorite song. ANYTHING but work.
A. Ask questions that go beyond “how was your week?”.
B. Beat the “Sunday scaries” by planning something fun, for the end of your weekend!
C. Being lost in phones will cause neck pain and prevent people from getting out for fun.
D. Thinking about those senses and what you’re experiencing can help you keep focused.
E. One recent study found that just over a quarter of working people plan to use all their vacation days. The rest of us — most of us — never do.
F. However, there are ways to maximize the weekend time to head back to work on Monday feeling more energized and happier.
G. Setting up some rules for phone use over the weekend can be helpful.

Now the door on the right of the entrance hall leads into the gift shop and ticket center once we pick up our entrance tickets, i'd ask everyone to put their bags and coats in the storage area. Now once you come back into the entrance hall, the door on the opposite side to the gift shop leads into the art gallery. There is a special exhibition there at the moment. If you continue on up the entrance hallway that leads into the main exhibition center on the back left hand side, there are some toilets. Beside the toilets, you'll find the three d theatre. I strongly recommend that to make time for the thirty minute presentation in the theatre running along the right hand side of the main exhibition center is the modern art studio. Here, not only can you view some of the most famous works of the twenty eighth century, but you can also attend a workshop run by a local artist. Okay, that's the art museum. 第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), hundreds of marine (海洋的) species across the world come under endangered and critically endangered categories.

B. Doubtful. C. Optimistic. D. Uncertain.
【答案】28. A 29. B 30. A 31. C

【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第四段“A lawyer for the Natural Resources Defense Council, which made the formal request for protection in 2008, expressed his disappointment that it took so long but said the proposal was still worth celebrating.(自然资源保护委员会(Natural Resources Defense Council)于2008年正式提出保护申请,该委员会的一名律师对耗时如此之久表示失望,但表示该提案仍值得庆祝。)”可知,这名律师可能会同意迟做总比不做好。故选A。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段““We do have options to restore this species,” Nicholas said.(“我们确实有办法恢复这个物种,”尼古拉斯说。)”可知,她对拯救白皮松的态度是乐观的。故选C。

【答案】32. C 33. D 34. A 35. B

Prehistory also saw types of crocodile we don’t see today(现在存活的种类也很少,只有25种。
根据第四段的“For our study we measured body size, which is important because it interacts with how fast animals grow(在我们的研究中,我们测量了身体大小,这很重要,因为它与动物的生长速度相互作用)”可知,鳄鱼的体型会影响它的生长速度。故选A。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文尤其是根据文章第一段“New research by scientists at the University of Bristol explains how a “stop-start” pattern of evolution, governed by environmental change, could explain why crocodiles (鳄鱼) have changed so little since the age of the dinosaurs.(布里斯托尔大学的科学家们进行的一项新研究解释了由环境变化控制的“启停”进化模式如何解释了为什么自恐龙时代以来鳄鱼的变化如此之小。)”可知,本文主要介绍了鳄鱼在两亿年间变化如此之小的原因。故选B。

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

One you can smell.(想办法让你的注意力集中在你此刻所处的位置,你此时此地正在做什么,以及一切的感觉。“五感冥想”是达到专注阶段的好方法。要做到这一点,保持静止,专注于你所感知的。注意你能看到的五件事。然后是四个你能感觉到的。三个你能听到的。两个你可以尝一尝。一个你可以闻到的)”以及后文“And sometimes you don’t have to follow that playbook exactly, just do whatever you want to do with the five senses.(有时候你不需要完全按照剧本去做,你可以用五种感官做任何你想做的事)”可知,上文提到了“五感冥想”法,故本句承接上文说明其作用:帮助你集中注意力。故D选项“思考这些感觉和你正在经历的事情可以帮助你集中注意力”符合语境,故选D。

【40题详解】
根据上文“To make the most of quality time with friends and loved ones, make it a point to talk about work as little as possible. We should redefine our hangouts: make new memories and learn new things about the people you care about.(为了充分利用与朋友和爱人在一起的宝贵时间,尽量少谈论工作。我们应该重新定义我们常去的地方:创造新的记忆,了解你在乎的人的新情况)”以及后文“Maybe ask your friends to tell you a memory of their first date or the story of their favorite song. ANYTHING but work.(也许让你的朋友告诉你他们第一次约会的记忆,或者他们最喜欢的歌曲的故事。除了工作)”可知,本句是在说明不建议询问新情况的问题,故A选项“除了问‘你这周过得怎么样?’”符合语境,故选A。

Lily’s parents turned to the school teacher Mr. Thompson for help. They poured out all the bad present situations to him. Mr. Thompson was a professional teacher with a deep understanding of the importance of a balanced lifestyle. He recognized that it was Lily’s too much worry about grades that was having a bad effect on her and the parent-child relationships.
Mr. Thompson advised Lily’s parents to calm down first. And after school, he approached Lily and gently suggested they go for a run together. “Believe me, Lily,” Mr. Thompson said, and finally Lily agreed to give it a try. For the next six months, Mr. Thompson and Lily would go for a run every day after school. They started with short distances, gradually increasing the length and intensity of their runs. In the beginning, Lily struggled to keep up, but as time went by, she found herself becoming more and more engaged in this practice with Mr. Thompson. As Lily continued her daily runs, something remarkable started to happen. Lily’s once imitable personality slowly began to disappear, and she apologized to her parents for her former rudeness. Her grades remained consistently high with a changed lifestyle.
Seeing Lily’s change, Mr. Thompson recommended her to give a speech to her classmates. In her speech, Lily expressed her gratitude to Mr. Thompson who helped her get rid of stress and build a good relationship with her parents. She explained that academic success was just one aspect of the identity and that physical and mental well-being were equally crucial. She said engaging in sports and exercise not only improved her overall health but also enhanced her ability to handle pressure. Through her own change, she encouraged her classmates to join her for runs, advocating the integration of sports into their lives.
