Grow Up, Shine Out: My School life
I am Zhang Hua from Grade 8. Today, I would like to share my school life with you.
My favorite subject is English as it helps me understand diverse cultures. Last month, I joined the school English speech contest and practiced hard with teachers’ help, which was a memorable experience.
To get along with friends, being helpful matters. Once my friend had trouble with math, I spent hours explaining problems to him, and our friendship grew stronger.
For learning, I suggest previewing lessons before class. It helps me follow teachers better and ask targeted questions, improving my study efficiency.
My school life is full of joy and growth. I hope every student can find their shine here.

“Please help me get through this!” I watched the big LED screen. There were five minutes left. I felt great pain in my back, which had been kneed by a player from the other team. I rolled from side to side, tears streaming down. It was a blow to my pride for I was always the man of the match, the best player on the field, popularly known as the “Untouchable”.
Soon doctors came. “Jared, can you hear…” Those were the last words I heard before I lost consciousness (知觉).
I opened my eyes slowly as silence filled the air. I tried my best to sit up but the weight of my body was like gravity and it pulled me down. I became aware that I had lost sense in my legs. I moved my fingers to feel them. They were still there! Could I be…? I shook my head.
“I’m your doctor, Wilson Ty. You are a strong man, Jared. How are you feeling?”
Feeling? I could not feel anything.
“My legs…” I said, then paused. Dr Wilson Ty began to talk about my condition. But only two words jumped out at me—paralysed (瘫痪的) forever. As I was trying to make sense of what he meant, my coach and a few of my teammates came in.
“Coach…help me!” The words came out of my mouth.
“It’s OK, Jared. Don’t lose heart.” My coach was trying to avoid saying more as he turned away, hiding the tears.
“Coach, I want to play soccer again, no matter what happens. I need you to help me,” I said as I held his arm tightly.
I struggled bravely in the next few months to be on my feet again. The hard knock had left me with a spinal cord injury (脊椎损伤). The “Untouchable” had become the “Vulnerable (脆弱的)”.
After almost a year in hospital, I finally felt my feet firmly on the ground as I made my way to the field. This would be my first game after fate (命运) almost turned my life upside down. Without doubt, it was the game that I won, I thought.
As I walked towards the field, the whole stadium was filled with “Hero! Hero!” together with “Welcome back, Untouchable Jared!” on the LED screen. They were shouting louder than they had ever done. My teammates handed the ball to me. The indescribable feeling came to me and this time, there were tears of joy.
( )4. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to (指代)?
A. The air. B. Silence.
C. The body weight. D. Gravity.
( )5. When Jared thought Without doubt, it was the game that I won, he probably felt ________.
A. free B. proud
C. curious D. nervous

For a long time, the apartment building where I lived was quiet. Although we shared the same lift every day, none of us knew each other’s names. We only looked at the floor numbers. We were neighbors behind locked doors, but almost strangers. Last winter, a wooden box in the lobby (大厅) changed that.
An old teacher, Mrs. Smith, put the box there with a sign: “Take what you need, leave what you can.” On the first day, there were three bottles of honey inside. I thought it was only a small act of kindness and would not last long.
But the “Gift Box” soon became a bridge that connected everyone in the building. The honey disappeared and was replaced by children’s books and a bag of apples. I once left an old umbrella there, and two days later, I found a note from Apartment 4B, “Thank you. My son and I used it on the way home from school. We got home dry.” For the first time, 4B was not just a number, but a real person.
One Sunday night, a water pipe (水管) in my room broke. Feeling helpless, I ran down and left a message in the box. Minutes later, Mr. Lee from the fifth floor came with his tools. While fixing the pipe, he told me he had lived alone since his children moved away. “I used to think no one here needed me,” he said. “We thought we were just exchanging things, but we are actually sharing the stories of our lives,” he added.
The box is larger now, and it has taught us that a community is not just made of bricks and stones, but of the love that we share when we help each other. Now, when we meet in the lift, we look at each other and smile.
( )7. Why were the neighbors almost strangers at first?
A. Because they only shared the same lift.
B. Because they often stayed behind doors.
C. Because they hardly ever communicated.
D. Because they seldom met in the apartment.
( )8. What does the writer mean by saying the box became a bridge?
A. It held children’s books.
B. It kept the building quiet.
C. It brought neighbors closer.
D. It offered people convenience.
( )9. Why does the writer mention the broken water pipe?
A. To describe the writer’s trouble.
B. To show help among the neighbors.
C. To explain the message in the box.
D. To introduce Mr. Lee’s fixing skills.
( )10. What did the box finally bring to the neighbors?
A. A habit of sharing stories.
B. A lesson to build friendship.
C. Honesty in the community.
D. Love among the neighbors.

You might imagine that poetry (诗歌) isn’t for people like you. You might even have a picture in your mind of what a real poet looks like. 1 The sooner you free yourself on the page, the more exciting the process (过程) becomes. How can you turn your story into a poem? 2
Let go of the “shoulds”. You likely have an idea of what poetry is supposed to look like. But long words, difficult sentences and strict verses (诗节) are not a must if that’s not your style.
3 Most people think that all poetry must be deep, but poetry can be about anything important in your daily life. Your friend gives you a hug when you feel down. Your classmate gives you a high five when you score a goal. If it’s real to you, it can become a part of your poem.
Try these poetry exercises. If you want to try writing a poem, start exactly where you are right now. Your first poem might be terrible. 4 But your third? Your 10th? Nobody knows what you might discover about yourself in the process. You might try writing list poems and short poems, or you might try writing a poem to tell a story.
The true purpose of poetry is self-expression. So, maybe it’s time to stop waiting for the right moment or the right level of skill. 5
A. Your second might be worse.
B. Maybe it’s time to just begin.
C. Write about the everyday moments.
D. Find a chance to listen to your daily stories.
E. Let us share some advice on how to get started.
F. But in fact, everyone can be a poet.

Doing well in school is about more than just spending long hours with your books — it’s about studying the right way. Many students work hard but don’t always get the r 1 they want because they depend on ineffective methods like last-minute cramming (死记硬背) or passive (被动的) reading. The good news is that by using smarter and easier study skills, you can i 2 your understanding, remember information longer, and reduce stress. Here are some ways to make your study time more productive.
One of the most important h 3 is active learning, which means engaging (参与) with the material instead of just reading it. When you study, try explaining concepts (概念) in your own words, asking yourself questions, or e 4 teaching the topic to a friend. This forces your brain to process (处理) information deeply, making it easier to recall later. Another helpful way is taking organized n 5 . Instead of writing down everything your teacher says, focus on key ideas and use methods like the Cornell note-taking system, which divides the page into main points, supporting details, and a summary part. This makes reviewing much easier.
Properly m 6 your time is another important skill. Rather than waiting u____7 the night before a test, spread out your study sessions (阶段) over days or weeks. Short, regular review sessions are far more effective than one long cramming session. A useful skill is the Pomodoro method: study for 25-30 minutes, then take a 5-minute break to recharge. This keeps your mind f 8 and helps you stay focused.
Practice is also necessary—especially for subjects like math and science. Instead of just memorizing formulas (公式), work through different problems to apply (应用) what you’ve learned. Self-testing with flashcards or past exam questions is another great way to c 9 your understanding and strengthen your memory.
Finally, don’t forget that your physical and mental health influences your learning. Getting enough sleep, eating well, and staying active all help your brain work at its b 10 . If you’re tired or distracted, even the best study methods won’t work.

In many Chinese cities, primary and middle schools have made class breaks longer from 10 to 15 minutes since the fall semester (学期) started. The governments (政府) want students and teachers to do more outdoor activities.
Before, Chinese schools usually had 10-minute breaks. But it was not enough time for students, especially those in tall buildings, to go outside and play. Sometimes, schools didn’t let students leave the classroom during breaks because they were worried about safety.
Now, local education departments (部门) are trying to make school schedules better. They want students to have at least 30 minutes of exercise every day.
In Beijing, primary schools’ morning and afternoon times haven’t changed. Middle schools end five minutes later.
In Wuxi, Jiangsu, schools have 15-minute breaks and one PE class every day. Students must do at least 100 minutes of exercise at school. The education officer said this helps students play outside and talk to each other. They want to give break time back to students.
A Qingdao primary school has many outdoor games like jump rope and hula hoop, and indoor puzzles during 15-minute breaks. In May, a fitness test showed that 47 percent of Qingdao students got “excellent” or “good” fitness grades, 10 percent more than before.
