I love winter birds and I love photographing them in snow. That being said, I admit that I’m a fair-weather birder. Worse, I’m a lazy, fair-weather birder. I don’t like weather extremes, so when it’s very hot or really cold, it is hard to get me to leave the comfort of home. In summer, I only photograph hummingbirds in my yard, and in winter, I try to only go out on relatively mild days. Most of my bird photography is done within an hour’s drive of my hometown of Elmira, Ont. So it’s all about finding a balance that works.
The winter of 2014 was a great year for snowy owls here in Woolwich Township. One day in early March, I was on my way home from work when I noticed a beautiful snowy owl sitting in a tree right at the crossing. I pulled over to admire him, and then kept heading home unwillingly.
Two hundred metres or so down the road, there were two more snowy owls in a field by a fence, and in the next field over, another on top of a fence post. I couldn’t find words to express my feeling at that moment. Thus I rushed home, grabbed my camera and went right back out to get some pictures. It was one of the most magical local birding moments I’ve ever experienced.
When I’m looking for excellent opportunities to photograph snowy owls and other birds without spending dozens of hours searching for them — and if I’m lucky, finding one that’s semi-cooperative — I head to the Canadian Raptor Conservancy (CRC) or the Mountsberg Raptor Centre. I’ve attended so many photo sessions (集会) at each of these fantastic facilities that I’ve lost count.
24. What factor has the most effect on whether the author goes out to photograph birds or not?
A. Road conditions. B. Personal emotion.
C. Weather conditions. D. Time arrangement.
25. How did the author feel when he saw the snowy owls on the way home?
A. Sad. B. Excited. C. Untouched. D. Proud.
26. What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Opportunities. B. Moments. C. Pictures. D. Birds.
27. What can we infer about the author?
A. The author only photographs snowy owls.
B. The author can take excellent photos easily.
C. The author makes a living by photographing birds.
D. The author values each chance to photograph birds.

Farmers often lose crops because they cannot spot diseases fast enough. When a virus (病毒) spreads, it can destroy many plants and hurt nearby farms too. In Tanzania, several viruses attack crops every year. Farmers used to wait six months or more for lab results, but now a small, handheld tool is changing everything.
The tool is made by a British company. It looks like a little box and is easy to carry to any field. First, a farmer cuts a tiny piece from a sick leaf. The tool then pulls out the plant’s DNA and reads it. Within two hours, it tells the farmer which virus is hurting the crop. This speed is very important, because the quicker the answer, the sooner the farmer can act.
After testing, farmer Asha Mohamed learned exactly which viruses were on her land. She was given two kinds of new seeds that can resist (阻挡) those viruses. She planted them right away. Nine months later, scientists came back and saw tall, healthy plants and a big harvest. The same tool was also used in Kenya on Naomi Mumo’s pawpaw trees. The quick test showed the exact disease, and Naomi could choose the right treatment.
Because the tool is small and runs on batteries, farmers can use it anywhere. They do not need a big lab or long waiting time. By finding viruses early and choosing resistant seeds, farmers protect their crops, their neighbors’ crops, and their income.
28. Why do researchers invent the tool?
A. To improve the soil of the farm. B. To recognize viruses of crops.
C. To increase the quality of plants. D. To reduce the farming process.
29. What makes the tool special?
A. Checking sick plants. B. Listing all kinds of harm in the soil.
C. Reading plant DNA quickly. D. Finding strong plants.
30. What do the researchers expect of the tool?
A. Saving the farmer’s time. B. Making the crops more suitable to the soil.
C. Making the plants resistant to disease. D. Making advanced technology amazing.
31. Where is the text most likely from?
A. A dairy. B. A guidebook.
C. A fairy novel. D. A science magazine.

32°N adaptive glasses, created by Deep Optics using pixelated liquid crystal (PLC) lenses (像素化液晶镜片), work as both protective eyewear and adaptive reading glasses.
PLC lenses appeared as early as 2017, but only recently did the company create an interesting pair of eyeglasses that could, in theory, become the only pair of glasses a person would need. That`s because the adaptive concept of the glasses allows wearers to adjust their purpose with a single slide of the frame (框架). For stylish sunglasses, simply slide backward on the right frame, and to put them into vision correction mode, you just slide back to the original place. Additionally, the lens power can be changed from 0 to 2.5 diopters (屈光度), and the built-in battery offers up to 48 hours of power.
“Our special technology actively corrects vision using PLC lenses,” Deep Optics explains. “The lenses perform like human eyes, allowing the wearer to see what they want when they want. Our technology adds no extra weight or size.” The lenses are set in frames containing a distance meter on the bridge, which measures the distance from the wearer`s face to objects. The meter then sends a signal to adjust the diopters of the lenses. This adjustment can happen quickly, letting the user focus from one object to another clearly and accurately in 14 milliseconds.
At $849 per pair, 32°N glasses are not cheap, but they do relieve you of the need to carry two pairs of eyeglasses with you. No more changing between reading and distance glasses, as after adjusting the liquid crystal lenses to your needs, all you have to do is a slide on the right frame to change their focus between close and far distances.
These adaptive sunglasses are a giant step forward, ridding the need for single-use lenses. And 32°N glasses are not just primary designs that may or may not make it to the market. They are already available, despite their high price. Still, if liquid lenses become more mainstream, the price is certain to come down in the future.
32. What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us?
A. How the lenses are fixed. B. How the lenses work.
C. How the lenses bear more weight. D. How the lenses are created.
33. Which words best describe 32°N glasses?
A. Heavy but effective. B. Costly but multi-functional.
C. Creative but easily-broken. D. Energy-saving but inflexible.
34. What can we know about 32°N glasses from the last paragraph?
A. They haven't reached consumers. B. Theyllcurewearers eye illnesses.
C. They have replaced the old sunglasses. D. They're a breakthrough in the glasses industry.
35. In which section of a website may the text appear?
A. Education. B. Sports.
C. Science. D. Entertainment.
