Glass or plastic bottles and cans are ordinary objects that we use and throw away daily. But for artists like Stéphanie Kilgast, these wastes are a great cloth for painting for new and colorful creations that show the strong life of the natural world and our impact on the environment. Based out of Vannes, France, Kilgast works primarily with different types of clay(陶土), which are shaped into various forms that look quite lifelike. “My goal is to offer a cheerfully reinvented world,” Kilgast explains. “What idea strikes me depends on the kinds of objects that I might pick up from the trash or from the second-hand shop, and the objects I pick often inform the general direction I will go.” One of Kilgast’s attractive works is a small family of elephants on top of a reused plastic can, surrounded by tall trees. This unusual combination of unexpected pairings carries Kilgast’s deep message—humans are a part of rather than the master of nature, which we often like to forget. When destroying the environment, we are destroying ourselves. Kilgast says that her artworks purposely remove any trace(痕迹) of human presence, except for those human-made items that have been carelessly thrown away. That’s because she wants to show another possibility of the future that’s in store for us if we don’t correct our self-destructive course: Humans are out of the “picture”, with only our objects left behind. While nature can finally grow back, we cannot. Ultimately, Kilgast says that the goal of her work is to question the impact of humans’ uncontrolled consumerism on the environment—as proved in the mountains of useless objects that we throw away without so much as a second thought. Meanwhile, she wants to create a sense of wonder in the beauty and power of nature. She says, “We need eco-systems to survive, and to keep Earth habitable, not just for us, but for all other beings on it as well.” 1. What kind of work is Kilgast doing? A. Making bottles from clay. B. Turning waste into eco-art. C. Developing a new cloth for painting. D. Documenting environmental changes. 2. What may Kilgast want to convey through her elephant artwork? A. Plastic waste threatens wildlife. B. Plants and animals pair well in art. C. Elephants are key species in nature. D. Humanity and nature are interdependent. 3. Why is the trace of human presence removed from Kilgast’s artworks? A. To sound the alarm about eco-destruction. B. To present the unique beauty of nature. C. To display nature’s regenerative power. D. To prove nature’s influence on art. 4. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. The Rise of Clay Art B. The Actualities of Plastic Usage C. A Guide to Reasonable Buying D. An Artistic Call to Protect Nature Nowadays, people are very familiar with the number of keys on a piano, 88, more specifically 52 white keys and 36 black keys. Yet, not all pianos are equipped with the same number of keys. In fact, the majority of older pianos have only 85 keys. Meanwhile, some manufacturers(制造商) think bigger and have produced pianos with a number of extra keys. For example, Bösendorfer makes a piano with nine additional keys, consisting of five white keys and four black keys. The keyboard then ranges over the whole eight octaves(八度音阶). The piano often has a lid(盖子) that can cover the extra keys if the pianist isn’t used to playing on a piano like that, or the extra keys can be of different colors. Another manufacturer, Stuart & Sons, makes a piano with 102 keys. Here, the extra keys are visually indistinguishable from the regular ones. The number of keys can head in the other direction though. Piano manufacturer Schoenhut specializes in producing tiny pianos with 44 or 49 keys. This version of the piano is very popular with pianists who enjoy all the perks of having this instrument in a not so spacious house. Another version of this instrument worth mentioning is the Emánuel Moór Pianoforte. The most distinctive part of this piano is the fact that its keyboard is divided into two levels, one above the other. Typically, the lower one has the regular 88 keys, and the upper one contains just 76 keys. Playing it is also a brand-new experience. When a key on the upper is pressed, the mechanism within the instrument would play the matching key on the lower keyboard, just an octave higher. This mechanism proves to be an advantage because it allows the pianist to reach two octaves with one hand, which couldn’t be achieved when playing the regular piano. It also makes playing complex pieces possible, since playing them on a single keyboard piano would require extremely difficult, cross-hand movements. However, the Emánuel Moór Pianoforte never went into mass production. Only a few piano manufacturers have made about 60 instruments ever. 5. What can be learned from Paragraph 1? A. Every Bösendorfer piano has 88 keys in total. B. Stuart & Sons’ extra keys look identical to the regular keys. C. Older pianos usually have 52 white keys and 36 black keys. D. The majority of manufacturers prefer extra piano keys. 6. What does the underlined word “perks” in Paragraph 2 probably mean? A. Causes. B. Methods. C. Benefits. D. Variations. 7. Why is the Emánuel Moór Pianoforte advantageous for playing complex pieces? A. It has a mechanism for higher octaves. B. It requires fewer hand movements. C. It allows two pianists to play together. D. It has 76 keys on each level. 8. Which is the most suitable title for the text? A. Piano Designs: Breaking the Tradition B. Piano Structures: Functions and Influences C. Piano Manufacturers: Following the Trend D. Piano Keys: Varieties and Features Ⅱ. The process of making a movie begins long before the cameras start rolling. Anyone who works in film can tell you that a lot of work goes on behind the scenes. However, movie fans rarely get to see behind the curtain. This leaves many wondering: How are movies made? __1__ Many writers, producers, actors, and directors carry around notebooks to write down ideas that come to them during the day. The best ideas grow in their minds until they’re big enough to become a film. Once an idea has had some time to grow, the next step is to write a script(剧本). The script breaks up the story into scenes. __2__ The script is written long before filming starts, but it will change throughout the movie-making process. In most cases, the next step is to make a storyboard. This is a visual guide for what scenes of the movie will look like. __3__ Others photograph their storyboards instead. This step helps writers, producers, and directors decide what the movie will look like. Is it time to film yet? Not quite! Before filming, moviemakers need to find the right cast and crew members. They need actors, set builders, costume designers, makeup artists, etc. After the cast and crew are in place, it’s time to get the cameras rolling. Everyone involved travels to the chosen location. __4__ In many cases, moviemakers will shoot different versions of every scene. That way, they’ll have many options to choose from in the final cut. After filming, the job continues. Film editing software is used to join the footage(片段) together. Editors add music, visual effects, and anything else needed to complete the film. __5__ A. All movies start as just an idea. B. Many people draw storyboards by hand. C. There, they shoot each scene until they get it just right. D. The storyboard serves as a blueprint for the entire film. E. It lays out the action and dialogue for the characters in the story. F. When they’re done, the movie is finally ready for the big screen. G. Before a movie starts shooting, makers will gather to brainstorm ideas. When destroying the environment, we are destroying ourselves.” 根据第四段中的“That’s because ... another possibility of the future ... don’t correct our self-destructive course: Humans are out of the ‘picture’, with only our objects left behind ...” 根据第一段中的“Stuart & Sons, makes a piano with 102 keys. Here, the extra keys are visually indistinguishable from the regular ones”可知,Stuart & Sons制作的有102个琴键的钢琴上的额外键在视觉上与常规键一样。 6. 根据第二段中的“Schoenhut specializes in producing tiny pianos with 44 or 49 keys. This version of the piano is very popular ... in a not so spacious house”可知,Schoenhut 专门生产44或49个键的微型钢琴。 根据最后一段中的“It also makes playing complex pieces possible, since playing them on a single keyboard piano would require extremely difficult, cross-hand movements”可知,它还能演奏复杂的乐曲,因为在单键盘钢琴上演奏这些乐曲需要极其困难的双手交叉动作。 1. 答案 A 解析 第一段末尾的“How are movies made?” 根据本段中的“Many writers ... write down ideas”“The best ideas grow”和第三段首句中的“Once an idea has had some time to grow”可知,制作电影的第一步是要有一个想法,A项符合语境。 G项也提及ideas,但是根据“Many writers ... write down ideas”可知,G项中的gather不符合语境。 2. 4. 答案 C 解析 设空处上文中的“it’s time to get the cameras rolling”表明电影已开拍。 C项中的There与location、shoot与get the cameras rolling分别构成词汇同现。 5. 1. 答案 B 解析 根据前文“I couldn’t wait for what I thought would be another exciting hip-hop class”及后文“a strict ballet instructor”可知,作者期待嘻哈课却迎来严格的芭蕾舞老师,心情低落,“heart sank”为固定短语,意为“心情低落”。A. beat“跳动”;B. sank“下沉”;C. pumped“输送”;D. hardened“变硬”。 2. 答案 D 解析 根据后文“While all the other girls wore perfect ballet outfits, I showed up in ...” A. came out“出版”;B. came by“经过”;C. stood by“支持”;D. stood out“突出,显眼”。 3. A. worn“破旧的”;B. tidy“整洁的”;C. baggy“宽松的”;D. tight“紧身的”。 4. 答案 D 解析 根据前文“Ms Barton made me demonstrate a grand plié, then told the class, ‘This is exactly how not to do it.’” A. complained“抱怨”;B. failed“失败”;C. hesitated“犹豫”;D. quit“放弃”。 5. 答案 A 解析 根据后文“refused to give up and I kept trying”可知,作者坚持不放弃,体现出固执的特质。 A. stubborn“固执的”;B. humble“谦逊的”;C. passionate“热情的”;D. sensitive“敏感的”。 6. 答案 B 解析 根据后文“she asked me to join a ballet dance for our year-end show”可知,老师邀请作者参加演出,说明之前已有认可的迹象。 A. dismissal“解雇”;B. approval“认可”;C. proposal“提议”;D. withdrawal“退出”。 7. A. performances“表演”;B. trials“试验”;C. exercise“锻炼”;D. practice“练习”。 8. A. covered“覆盖”;B. hit“击中,照射”;C. passed“经过”;D. blinded“使失明”。 9. 答案 C 解析 根据后文“The audience’s cheers washed over me like warm sunshine”可知,作者因观众欢呼不再紧张,紧张感消失。 A. came up“出现”;B. rose up“升起”;C. melted away“逐渐消失”;D. died away“渐渐减弱”。 10. 答案 A 解析 根据后文“When Ms Barton called my name for the ‘Ballerina’ award”可知,作者意外获得奖项,这是另一个惊喜,与前文“Then came the shock”呼应。 A. shock“惊喜,震惊”;B. task“任务”;C. comfort“安慰”;D. lesson“教训”。 11. 答案 B 解析 根据前文的“When Ms Barton called my name for the ‘Ballerina’ award”可知,作者因意外获奖而震惊,几乎失手掉书,符合当时的情绪反应。A. opened“打开”;B. dropped“掉落”;C. threw“扔”;D. collected“收集”。 12. 答案 A 解析 根据后文的“I smiled back at Ms Barton and said, ‘Thank you for challenging me.’” A. teary-eyed“眼含泪水的”;B. cold-hearted“冷酷的”;C. long-faced“闷闷不乐的”;D. weak-kneed“软弱的”。 13. 答案 C 解析 根据前文“As I received the award”可知,作者获得“Ballerina”奖,此处指握着这个奖项。A. hand“手”;B. breath“呼吸”;C. prize“奖项”;D. book“书”。 14. 答案 C 解析 根据前文“My face burned when Ms Barton made me demonstrate a grand plié, then told the class, ‘This is exactly how not to do it.’” A. achievement“成就”;B. acknowledgement“认可”;C. embarrassment“尴尬”;D. disappointment“失望”。 15. A. trip“绊倒”;B. jump“跳跃”;C. run“跑步”;D. turn“转弯”。
