根据第二段中的“But a team doctor recorded results from their regular exercise: improved mobility, lowered blood pressure and better digestion”可知,球队的医生记录了队员们经过规律锻炼后的身体状况:身体更加灵活、血压下降、消化更好。 根据第三段中的“In 2010, the international stoplight landed the team an invitation to travel and play in a tournament in Massachusetts”和“In July 2010, 15 Grannies streamed through the Boston airport”可知,2010年,受国际媒体的关注,Beka的球队被邀请参加在马萨诸塞州举办的一场足球比赛。 根据第四段中的“The goalie presented the trophy to Beka and the host Grannies team, without whom this event would never have taken place”可推知,守门员将奖杯赠送给Beka是为了表达对她的敬意和感激,因为Beka是这次国际祖母足球锦标赛的组织者和发起人。 Those who received information felt their partner knew them better, relative to those who didn’t receive information”可知,45名参与者收到了关于“搭档”的类似身份信息(回复是预先编程和随机生成的),其余40名参与者则没有。 3. 答案 F 解析 根据本段小标题Prepare children in advance和设空处后的“If they break or dirty something ...” F项中的your little ones指代小标题中的children。 4. 2. 答案 D 解析 根据“someone had closed my registration”和“This meant I would have to wait another semester”可知,作者原本期待着秋天开始上大学,但有人在她不知情的情况下取消了她的注册。 3. 4. 答案 A 解析 根据“everything went terribly wrong”和“someone had closed my registration”可知,那天是个灾难性的日子。 5. 答案 C 解析 根据“a moving truck stopped outside and two men took everything”可知,作者回到小公寓,发现里面的东西全被清空了。 6. 答案 A 解析 根据“I returned to my small apartment”可知,当时作者在外面,而邻居并不知道她不在家。 7. 8. 答案 B 解析 根据“bookstore”和“a moment of peace and quiet”可知,作者漫步到附近的一家书店,寻求片刻的宁静。 9. 答案 D 解析 根据“knelt down on the floor”“uncontrollably”和“Don’t be sad”可知,作者跪在书架区的地板上,眼泪簌簌而下。 10. 答案 A 解析 根据“with her mother watching at a distance”和“She stopped, touched my hair”可知,作者从眼角的余光中看到一个三岁的女孩在不远处母亲的注视下向作者走了过来。 11. 答案 D 解析 根据“for what seemed like a minute”“Don’t be sad”和“It will be all right”可知,小女孩拥抱了作者好像有一分钟之久。 12. 13. 答案 B 解析 根据“I thanked her and said to her mother”可知,作者对小女孩的母亲说:“你养育了一个出色的女孩。” 15. 答案 D 解析 根据“I still think of her”和“remember her saying, ‘It will be all right.’” In rural South Africa, 16 teams of women, all of us over 50 years old, participated in this inaugural(开幕的) event—the Grannies International Football Tournament. It was 13 years in the making, built on dreams and a friendship that crosses continents. The organizer, Beka Ntsanwisi—a well-known community activist and cancer survivor—founded the original team of soccer-playing grandmothers aged 40 to 80, some 15 years ago, to improve their health. At first the locals laughed at them and told them they belonged at home caring for their grandchildren. But a team doctor recorded results from their regular exercise: improved mobility, lowered blood pressure and better digestion. In 2010, the international spotlight landed the team an invitation to travel and play in a tournament in Massachusetts—from yours truly. Like the Grannies, I found soccer later in life and my Lexington, Massachusetts teammates are among my best friends. Beka replied to my invitation without hesitation: “We will come, my sister.”In July 2010, 15 Grannies streamed through the Boston airport. They wowed us with their dancing on the sidelines of the field and their enthusiasm for life. And during that visit, Beka announced, “Before I die, I want to host a Grannies World Cup.” In March, 2023, Beka’s 13-year wish to host a Grannies international tournament was finally and joyfully met. The tournament, held in the town of Nkowankowa, was intense as France, Zambia, three South African teams, and all three US teams entered the quarterfinals on the fourth and final day. My team would settle for second place, but the US Breakers, also from Massachusetts, held the 3-foot-tall trophy(奖杯) in the air. The goalie(守门员) presented the trophy to Beka and the host Grannies team, without whom this event would never have taken place. We know Beka is the true champion. For me, the Grannies tournament was an extraordinary gift, an experience I will never forget. For all of us, we hold on to our memories of bonding with our soccer sisters. 1. What can we learn about the original team founded by Beka? A. It was 13 years in the making. B. It received support from the locals. C. It promoted the wellbeing of its members. D. It consisted of middle-aged women players. 2. Why did the 15 Grannies fly to Boston in July 2010? A. To take part in a football competition. B. To perform at a football tournament. C. To share their football playing stories. D. To learn to play football professionally. 3. What did the goalie intend to do by gifting Beka the trophy? A. Honor Beka’s football skill. B. Share the joy of their success. C. Acknowledge Beka’s initiative. D. Declare victory for the host team. 4. What is the best title for the text? A. My Soccer Life with Grannies B. My Granny’s Enthusiasm for Soccer C. Inspired by Soccer: An International Tour D. Celebrating Grannies: A Global Soccer Event Anonymity(匿名) is an increasingly striking part of life in the 21st century. Globalization has helped depersonalize much of our trade and many of our commercial activities. Urbanization continues to pull people into thickly populated cities, where they may be less likely to know their neighbors than residents of more rural communities. And the ever-growing interactions that take place online are marked by our ignorance of who exactly is sitting at the other keyboard sharing a piece of news, offering a bit of advice, or starting an argument. Anonymity is desirable in some contexts and can be an important aspect of personal privacy, but it also has a dark side. Research has found, for instance, that anonymity can encourage dishonesty and other antisocial behavior. But it’s possible to change how anonymous we feel even without changing how anonymous we are, according to scholars Anuj K. Shah and Michael LaForest. In one laboratory experiment, they told 85 participants they had been paired with a partner—though in reality, there was no partner—with whom they would interact online. Participants were then asked to share information about themselves as part of an icebreaker exercise. They were asked to provide minimally informative details about their lives, such as their age or job. 45 participants received similar information about their “partner”—the responses were preprogrammed and randomly generated—and 40 participants did not. Those who received information felt their partner knew them better, relative to those who didn’t receive information. 55 participants in another experiment, given a monetary reward to lie but warned that their partner would flag suspected dishonesty, were less likely to lie when they received information about their partner. The less anonymous participants felt, the less likely they were to lie. Shah points out that nowadays social media allows people to gather information about others in a way that confuses the line between acquaintance(熟人) and stranger. When you check a new staff’s Linkedln profile before meeting for the first time, you may be trying to get to know the person a little better. But, the research suggests, you may come away feeling, and acting, as though the newcomer knows you a little better too. 5. What can we learn from Paragraph 1? A. Modern life increases anonymity. B. Urbanization reduces privacy needs. C. Globalization inspires personal commerce. D. Online interactions make people feel connected. 6. What made the 85 participants feel differently about their partner? A. How similar their partner was to them. B. Whether they talked with their partner online. C. How much information they gave to their partner. D. Whether they learned basic facts about their partner. 7. Why might the 55 participants lie less? A. They hated dishonest behavior. B. They cared little about the prize. C. They felt someone was watching them. D. They thought they were bad at cheating. 8. What is the best title for the text? A. Why Anonymity Helps Us Stay Honest B. What Encourages Us to Obey Social Rules C. How Social Media Affects First Impressions D. Why Knowing Others Makes Us Feel Known Ⅱ. Top Tips That Will Make You a Great Houseguest “The bottom line is to treat their home as you would want yours to be treated,” says etiquette(礼仪) expert Jan Goss. A recent survey asked 1,000 Americans to share the best things they can do as a houseguest. The top answers included asking if any help is needed and helping to clean the kitchen. __1__ And here are some other suggestions. Ask before entering a space. Just because they are sharing their home with you doesn’t mean they are sharing their whole home with you. If you want to go somewhere other than the main common areas or the room you are staying in, simply ask. __2__ Prepare children in advance. “Before I stay anywhere, I always teach my children ‘hands to self,’” says Goss. “If you just tell them ‘Don’t touch anything,’ it starts things out on a negative note.” __3__ If they break or dirty something, clean it up immediately and do whatever you can to make it right. __4__ The trip is going so well that you want to extend it a couple of days? Think long and hard about that. Extending your stay is an etiquette mistake. Even people who really enjoy being together may long for the return to normalcy, and it’s best to stick to your original plans. Leave a thank-you note. “I always carry some thank-you cards in my purse, and leave one on the bed or dresser when I leave,” says Goss. If she doesn’t have a thank-you card handy, she mails one to her host later. “It only takes a few minutes, and it ends your stay on a high note,” she says. “It’s a lovely surprise for your host. __5__” A. Leave as planned. B. Extend your invitation. C. Everyone loves to be appreciated. D. Who doesn’t love a little assistance? E. What does a thank-you note mean to your host? F. Once there, remember to keep an eye on your little ones. G. A lot of etiquette boils down to requesting permission first. Ⅲ. There was a time in my life when everything went terribly wrong.
