MAKE IT WORK — SCHOOL INVENTION DAY
Do you have a small invention that solves an everyday problem? Bring it to the school hall on May 16. The show lasts from 2:00 to 4:30 p.m. Students in all grades are welcome. You may work alone or in a team of up to four.
Your invention need not be expensive. A useful change to an old object is welcome. Bring a working model and a card. On the card, write the problem, the materials and the way your invention works. Each team has three minutes to introduce its model.
Teachers will look at usefulness, clear explanations and careful testing. A beautiful model without a clear use will not get the highest score. You should be able to explain one change made after a test.
Please send your team name to Ms. Lin before May 10. Keep the model small enough to fit on a classroom desk. Do not bring fire or sharp tools. If your model needs electricity, speak to Ms. Lin before the event. Visitors may ask questions, but they must ask before touching a model.
46. Where will Invention Day take place?
A. At a bus station. B. In the school hall.
C. In a shop. D. In the school garden.
47. How many students can a team have at most?
A. Four. B. Two.
C. Six. D. Ten.
48. What must be on the card?
A. The price of every desk. B. The team's home addresses.
C. The visitors' names. D. How the invention works.
49. What do teachers especially value?
A. Usefulness and careful testing. B. Only bright colors.
C. Only expensive materials. D. The size of the team.
50. What should visitors do before touching a model?
A. Take the model home. B. Pay some money.
C. Turn off every light. D. Ask for permission.
B
Lily loved reading in bed, but her books often closed when she reached for a drink. She wanted a book holder. At first, she searched for the most beautiful design online and copied it from thick paper.
It looked good on her desk. However, when her grandfather tried it, the holder could not support his large book. Lily felt embarrassed. She had spent more time choosing colors than learning what a reader needed.
The next day, she asked three family members about their reading habits. Her mother used small books. Her grandfather read a large history book. Her brother needed to turn pages with one hand while drawing with the other. Their needs were different.
Lily made a second holder from wood with her father's help. It had two positions for books of different sizes. Her brother tested it and suggested moving a clip so the words at the bottom were not covered. Lily followed his advice.
At the school show, Lily displayed both models. Some visitors wondered why she kept the failed one. “It reminds me to listen before I make things,” she said. For her, the second model was valuable because it came from real needs, not just a pretty picture.
51. Why did Lily want a book holder?
A. Her book often closed when she reached for a drink.
B. She wanted to stop reading.
C. She had lost all her books.
D. Her desk was too large.
52. What was wrong with the first model?
A. It had no color. B. It covered the whole desk.
C. It was made of expensive metal. D. It could not support a large book.
53. What did Lily do before making the second model?
A. Entered another school. B. Stopped visiting websites forever.
C. Asked about family members' needs. D. Bought three new books.
54. Why was the clip moved?
A. To stop the pages moving forever. B. To avoid covering words.
C. To make the holder heavier. D. To hide a broken part.
55. What did Lily learn?
A. Every reader has the same needs. B. Listen to users before making things.
C. Failed models should always be hidden. D. A beautiful object is always useful.
C
In our science club, we tested three paper bridges. All were made from the same amount of paper and placed between two desks the same distance apart. We wanted to know how shape affected strength.
Bridge A was a flat sheet. Bridge B was folded several times. Bridge C was rolled into a tube. We put identical small blocks on each bridge, one at a time, until it fell. We kept our hands away while adding the blocks carefully from above.
In the first test, A held two blocks, B held twelve and C held eight. We repeated the test with new copies of each bridge. The second results were two, eleven and nine. B held the most in both tests, but the numbers were not exactly the same.
Our teacher asked why we used the same paper and distance. We explained that changing many things together would make the results difficult to understand. She also warned us against saying that every folded bridge is stronger than every other bridge. We had tested only three simple designs.
The lesson was not just about building a strong bridge. It was also about asking a clear question, keeping a fair test and describing results carefully.
56. What did the club mainly test?
A. The weight of students. B. The price of paper.
C. The effect of shape on bridge strength. D. The color of classroom desks.
57. Which bridge held the most blocks in both tests?
A. Bridge C. B. Bridge A.
C. Bridge B. D. None of them.
58. How many blocks did Bridge C hold in the second test?
A. Eleven. B. Nine.
C. Twelve. D. Eight.
59. Why were the paper and distance kept the same?
A. To make the comparison fair. B. To make all bridges fall together.
C. To save every block. D. To avoid making copies.
60. Which conclusion is supported by the tests?
A. B performed best among these three designs. B. Every folded bridge is the strongest.
C. One test gives a perfect answer. D. Shape never affects strength.
D
Does an invention have to be a completely new machine? Not always. Sometimes a useful invention is a small change to something people already use.
Imagine a lunch box that is difficult for young children to open. Adding a larger handle may help. The change is small, but it can solve a real problem. The important question is not “Does it look strange?” but “Does it help someone?”
Before making a change, inventors need to observe. Watching a person use an object can reveal problems that a quick conversation misses. A child may say a box is fine but struggle with it every day. After noticing the difficulty, the inventor can ask more useful questions.
Then comes testing. A larger handle may be easier to hold, but it may also stop the box from fitting into a bag. A new design can bring a new problem. That is why one successful test is not the end of the work.
Invention involves both creativity and patience. Good ideas matter, but so do careful observation and repeated improvements. An ordinary object can become much more useful when someone pays attention to how people really live.
61. What is the writer's main view?
A. Useful inventions must look strange. B. Small changes can be valuable inventions.
C. Every new design is better. D. Only machines count as inventions.
62. What does the underlined word “reveal” mean in the passage?
A. Hide. B. Repair.
C. Forget. D. Show.
63. Why may a larger handle cause a problem?
A. The box becomes invisible. B. Children stop needing lunch.
C. The box may no longer fit into a bag. D. The handle always breaks.
64. Why should testing continue?
A. A change may create another difficulty. B. It makes the invention more expensive.
C. All users like the same design. D. Observation is useless.
65. Which title best fits the passage?
A. How to Buy an Expensive Machine. B. Small Changes, Useful Ideas.
C. The History of School Bags. D. A World Without Lunch Boxes.

My Useful Invention
I have designed a small bookshelf for my desk.
My books used to lie in a large pile, so finding one was difficult. My bookshelf is made of old wood. It has two levels and is used for keeping books in order. At first, it was not strong enough. After testing it, I made the bottom wider with my father’s help. Now I can find the book I need quickly. This invention is simple, but it makes my study easier. I have learned to notice problems and keep improving my ideas.

W: My paper tower fell again. Maybe I should give up.
M: Let's look at the bottom. It is too narrow.
W: Should I make the top wider?
M: Try a wider bottom first. We can test it together.
W: Good idea. I'll keep a record of each test.

Welcome to our workshop. We will meet on Thursday in the science room. Please work in groups of four. Each group needs to bring a pencil and some clean paper. Your task is to make a small bridge from paper. First draw a plan. Then build your bridge and test how much it can hold. Do not use glass. At the end, take a photo of your model and write down one improvement you want to make.
