Before movable type, a whole page was often carved onto one wooden block. The method could produce many copies, but carving a new block for every page took time and materials. Movable type changed the process by using separate pieces for characters. The pieces could be arranged, printed, cleaned and used again in another page.

Modern printing looks very different, but the idea of reusable parts continues. A digital font stores the shape of each letter or character separately. When a page is designed, software arranges those shapes again and again. Three-dimensional printers use another kind of repeated unit: they follow digital instructions and add material layer by layer until an object is formed.

The box cannot reach the temperature of a refrigerator, but in suitable weather it can keep some vegetables fresh longer without electricity.
The design has limits. It works best in dry air and needs clean water. It is also unsuitable for medicine that must stay at an exact low temperature. Calling it a complete replacement for a refrigerator would be misleading. However, in the right situation it may reduce food waste at a low cost. In a humid coastal town, by contrast, little water may leave the sand, so the same box may provide almost no benefit.
