AFTER-SCHOOL LANGUAGE CIRCLE
Would you like to use English in a friendly group? Join us in Room 203 every Tuesday from 4:10 to 5:00 p.m. Students in all grades are welcome. There is no test before joining, and you do not need to speak perfectly.
The first ten minutes are for a warm-up game. Then you will work with a partner on a different topic each week, such as food, hobbies or school life. The last fifteen minutes are for sharing useful expressions. You may write them in your notebook.
Please listen while others speak. If you cannot understand, ask politely for repetition. Do not laugh at mistakes. We will correct a few common problems after each activity, so students can finish their ideas first.
This month, Ms. Chen will help us prepare for a short exchange with a partner school. Each student will record a one-minute introduction. The recordings will be shared only with the partner class. Tell Ms. Chen if you prefer to give a live introduction instead.
To join, write your name on the classroom noticeboard before Monday afternoon. Bring a notebook and a willingness to try.
46. When does the Language Circle meet?
A. On Tuesday afternoon. B. On Sunday afternoon.
C. On Friday evening. D. On Monday morning.
47. Who can join the circle?
A. Only students in Room 203. B. Only students with perfect English.
C. Students from all grades. D. Only students who pass a test.
48. What should students do if they do not understand?
A. Ask politely for repetition. B. Stop everyone from speaking.
C. Leave at once. D. Laugh at the speaker.
49. How long should each recorded introduction be?
A. Fifteen minutes. B. Ten minutes.
C. Fifty minutes. D. One minute.
50. What is the purpose of the notice?
A. To choose the best singer. B. To invite students to practice English.
C. To announce a written exam. D. To sell language books.
B
When Sara came to our class, I wanted to make her feel welcome. During lunch, I pointed to an empty seat and smiled. She smiled back but did not sit down. I thought she did not want to join us.
Later, our teacher asked how Sara's first day had gone. I told her about lunch. “Did you actually ask Sara?” she said. I realized I had only guessed.
The next day, I walked over and said, “Would you like to sit with us?” Sara looked pleased. She explained that she had seen my smile but had not been sure whether the seat was for her. She was waiting for a clear invitation.
We talked about gestures and words. Sara said that people in her family used small movements differently, and she was still learning how our class communicated. I told her that even people in the same city could misunderstand each other.
After that, I became more careful about quick judgments. A smile can be friendly, but it does not answer every question. When I am unsure, I ask politely. Understanding another person often begins with a simple question instead of a silent guess.
51. What did the writer first do at lunch?
A. Pointed to an empty seat and smiled. B. Left the classroom angrily.
C. Asked Sara a clear question. D. Took Sara's lunch.
52. What did the writer wrongly think?
A. Sara could not see the seat. B. The teacher disliked lunch.
C. Sara did not want to join them. D. There were no empty seats.
53. Why did Sara not sit down at first?
A. She had already gone home.
B. She hated everyone in the class.
C. She never ate lunch.
D. She was unsure whether the invitation was for her.
54. What does the story suggest about gestures?
A. Everyone uses them in exactly the same way. B. They are always clearer than words.
C. Their meaning may need clarification. D. They should never be used.
55. What did the writer learn to do?
A. Avoid new classmates. B. Ask politely before making a judgment.
C. Use only written messages. D. Stop smiling at others.
C
Two groups in our class tried different ways to learn twelve new English words. Group A copied each word six times. Group B used each word in a sentence and read the sentences to a partner. Both groups spent fifteen minutes learning.
At the end of the lesson, the groups did a short test. Group A remembered an average of ten words, and Group B remembered nine. A week later, without more practice, they took another test. This time, Group A remembered six and Group B remembered eight.
Some students said that copying was useless. Our teacher disagreed. The first test showed that copying had helped students remember words for a short time. However, using words in meaningful sentences seemed helpful for remembering them a week later in this activity.
She also pointed out the limits of our comparison. There were only ten students in each group, and some had already seen a few of the words. We would need more careful tests before making a broad conclusion.
For my own learning, I now combine methods. I check spelling, make a sentence and use the word again over the next few days. The goal is not to win a test once, but to make a word available when I need it.
56. How long did each group spend learning?
A. Fifteen minutes. B. Six minutes.
C. Ten minutes. D. One week.
57. What did Group B do?
A. Only copied words six times. B. Avoided speaking to partners.
C. Used words in sentences. D. Learned no new words.
58. Which group remembered more words a week later?
A. Both remembered ten. B. Neither remembered any.
C. Group B. D. Group A.
59. Why did the teacher avoid a broad conclusion?
A. The class had no test results.
B. All students used the same method.
C. Nobody knew any English.
D. The comparison had a small group and other limits.
60. What does the writer now do?
A. Combines spelling, sentences and later practice.
B. Uses every word for one day only.
C. Only copies each word once.
D. Stops checking spelling.
D
When reading in another language, you will meet unfamiliar words. Should you stop and check every one? Not always. Sometimes the surrounding sentences can help you understand enough to continue.
For example, imagine reading, “The path was narrow; only one person could walk along it at a time.” Even if you do not know “narrow,” the second part gives a useful clue. It tells you something about the width of the path.
Word parts can help too. If you know “read” and have learned the ending “-able,” you may guess that “readable” describes something you can read. Still, a guess should be checked against the whole sentence. A word part alone does not always give the exact meaning.
Sometimes a word is essential: without it, you cannot understand the main idea or a safety instruction. Then it is worth checking a reliable dictionary or asking a teacher. If the word is not important at that moment, mark it and keep reading.
Good readers are flexible. They use clues, check important meanings and return to difficult parts. Their aim is understanding, not simply moving through a page as quickly as possible or translating every word separately.
61. What can help readers understand unfamiliar words?
A. Only the page number. B. The price of the book.
C. The surrounding sentences. D. Only the book cover.
62. What does “narrow” mean in the example?
A. Very long. B. Made of stone.
C. Full of trees. D. Not wide.
63. What should readers do with a guess from word parts?
A. Forget the whole text. B. Use it for every word.
C. Accept it without thinking. D. Check it against the sentence.
64. When is checking a dictionary especially useful?
A. Only after finishing every book. B. Whenever a page has a picture.
C. When a word is essential to the meaning. D. When the word is already familiar.
65. What is the best title?
A. Read for Understanding. B. The Cheapest Dictionary.
C. Translate Every Word First. D. Never Ask a Teacher.

My Way of Learning English
English is useful in my daily life.
I learn it because I want to communicate with people from other countries. I used to feel nervous about speaking. Now I practice with a partner for ten minutes every day. I also listen to short recordings and try to copy the pronunciation. When I make a mistake, I write it down and check it later. An English story-sharing activity will be held next week. I will take part and tell a simple story. I hope to become more confident through regular practice.

You should include a greeting and one interesting fact. Please write clearly. At three o'clock, everyone will walk around and read the posters. Bring a notebook to record new words. The event will end with a short song.
