三、阅读理解(共15小题,每小题2分,共30分)
A
Every 14 days, another language dies. There are many reasons for this. Some people think more common languages have more economic (经济的) power. Because of this, young people choose to learn a common language as they think it is more useful. Another reason is that some languages aren’t written down. Guujaaw is a leader of the Haida Nation, whose people have lived on the Queen Charlotte Islands, Canada, for more than 10, 000 years. Their language is endangered. Traditionally, it wasn’t written down, and, as a result, some people are worried that it will die one day. Guujaaw replies to this , “ We talk to each other, listen, visit, and believe in the spoken word. Expressing yourself without writing is natural. ” However , if Guujaaw’s language and others like it are going to stay alive , writing may have to become part of their lives.
When a language dies, a lot of knowledge dies with it. To begin with, language is a huge part of the culture of the people who speak it. Language allows speakers to say certain things: words that describe a cultural idea may not translate exactly into another language. Furthermore, many endangered languages have rich spoken cultures. Stories, songs and histories are passed on from older people to younger generations (一代) . Elizabeth Lindsey, a language researcher, emphasizes (强调) this. “When an elder dies, a library is burned,” she says.
Also, language death affects our knowledge about nature. Local people often have a deep understanding of plants, animals, and the relationship between them. David Harrison, a researcher on endangered languages, reflects, “80% of plant and animal species (物种) have been undiscovered by science. But that doesn’t mean they’re unknown to humans. ”
Many languages are endangered. However, it’s not too late. Children often grow up speaking two languages. “ No one ... becomes richer by giving up ... one language to learn another ,” Harrison said. If children feel both languages are important, they will use both. So, it is necessary that children realize how useful their local language is.
( ) 21. In Paragraph 2, the writer mainly tells us ________.
A. how cultures are passed on
B. how cultures are discovered
C. why languages are written down
D. why languages are important to cultures
( ) 22. The underlined word “ affects ” in the passage means “________” .
A. waits for B. depends on
C. is different from D. has an influence on
( ) 23. Which of the following is the writer’s opinion?
A. People need to use common languages more often.
B. The spoken word is more important than the written word.
C. Children are the hope to stop the local language from dying.
D. Many animals and plants are in danger because of dying languages.
B
To many foreigners, Chinese characters may seem like a random (任意的) mix of lines. But to Lena, a 20-year-old girl from Northern Virginia, US, each one tells its own story.
In her eyes, the character “kan” looks like a singing jellyfish, and the traditional form of “wu” lets her think of a sheep. Then, she tried to draw them as she saw them. To her surprise, after she posted the picture “wu” on Xiaohongshu, many loved it.
Lena started using Xiaohongshu months ago. Then, she noticed that many Chinese characters “stood out as looking like different objects”. Now, thanks to Lena’s drawings, more people are thinking about language, art and cross-cultural communication deeply.
Some people think that Lena seems to understand the beauty of Chinese characters even better than many Chinese people.
“It’s because you all are used to seeing the characters,” said Lena. She said that the opposite is also true. For example, she learned from her Chinese friends that the letters “orz” together look like a person kneeling (下跪) to say sorry. But it carries no meaning in English.
Lena’s story shows that language is more than just words. She also encourages Chinese learners to talk with native (母语的) speakers. “It’s more fun if you are teaching them your language and they’re teaching you theirs at the same time because then it’s more of a cultural exchange.”
( ) 24. Which of the following is the picture Lena drew for the character “wu”?
A. B. C. D.
( ) 25. What is a result brought by Lena’s drawings?
A. Deeper cross-cultural thinking.
B. More online posts for artworks.
C. Better language learning methods.
D. Warmer communication with friends.
( ) 26. Why does Lena give the example of “orz”?
A. To prove Chinese people sometimes misunderstand English.
B. To explain a popular word in English-speaking countries.
C. To introduce an easy way to remember English words.
D. To show cultural differences in understanding characters.

After coming to America, the use of “yes” and “no” brings me a lot of trouble, because the use in Korean (韩语) is different from that in English. For example, if I am asked, “Haven’t you had dinner yet?” and I have not had dinner yet, then in Korean I usually say “Yes, I haven’t.” But in English, I have to say, “No, I haven’t.”
Because of this, my friends often get the opposite meaning from what I want to give them. One day only a month after I came to America, I had dinner with an American student, Bob. He asked me some questions and I answered them sincerely. A few days later, I found some roommates thought that I came from North Korea. One day, I stopped by Bob’s room and asked why he was spreading the wrong information. “Oh, you told me that. Don’t you remember?” he said, “when I asked you, ‘You are not from North Korea, are you?’ you clearly answered, ‘Yes, of course.’ Didn’t it mean that you are from North Korea?”
The different use also causes problems between my friends and me. One weekend night, my roommate Mark brought his children into the dorm (宿舍). They made some noise while playing. I did not mind the noise since I was just watching TV. The next morning, I met Mark. He asked me with a smile, “Didn’t my children make noise last night? Didn’t it make you uncomfortable?” Because I did not mind the noise at all, I clearly said “Yes!” The smile suddenly disappeared from Mark’s face, and he said, “I am sorry about that. They are going right now. see you later.” I could not understand what he was sorry about, and I just said, “OK. Bye!” After a moment of thinking, I realized how stupid I was. That evening, I explained to Mark and said sorry to him. I knew he thought that I had been very rude.
Now to deal with this problem, I have set simple rules: First, take a five-second break if I am not sure of “yes” or “no”. Second, use “pardon me”, so the person may explain to me in a direct way.
( ) 27. In Paragraph 3, when the writer answered “Yes”, Mark might think the writer was ________.
A. rude B. kind C. helpful D. polite
( ) 28. The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refers to (指的是) ________.
A. “yes” B. the noise C. watching TV D. the smile
( ) 29. If the writer is not sure of “yes” or “no” next time, he will say ________.
A. “pardon me” B. “yes” C. “no” D. “I don’t know”
( ) 30. The writer writes the passage mainly to remind us ________.
A. to work hard on English B. to learn to respect others
C. never to use “yes” or “no” D. to know cultural differences
D
Did you know that vocabulary is more important than grammar? If you have a good vocabulary, you can communicate successfully, even if the grammar is not completely perfect.
However, one common problem is learning new words and then forgetting them. So when you want to use a new word in a conversation, you can’t remember it at that moment. Does this often happen to you? The reason for this difficulty is that most students try to learn vocabulary by studying lists and dictionaries and remembering the words. But it may not work if you don’t have a very good memory.
The best way to learn vocabulary and remember the words successfully is to learn new words and use them at once. You can do this with a very simple exercise. Every time you learn a new word, for example, from an English lesson or an article, write it down in your vocabulary notebook. Writing is more active than just reading a definition (释义). You should write the word, the definition in English or translation, one example sentence from the article or dictionary and one example sentence that you create.
Imagine you just learn the word “generous”, write in your vocabulary notebook: generous (adjective), definition—giving or willing to give freely. Example one, from the article: Thanks for paying for my dinner, you’re very generous. Example two, my example: My brother is generous because he volunteers at the animal shelter on weekends. It’s best if your example sentences are true to your life, because this creates a personal connection with the new word. The next day, read your vocabulary notebook again and try to add one more example sentence using the new word. It’s helpful for you to retain it. These two simple steps—writing the word and using it at once—help you remember and use new words.
Do you have a vocabulary notebook? If not, start now.
( ) 31. What is the best way to remember new words?
A. Studying long word lists. B. Using new words at once.
C. Reading their definitions. D. Studying with a dictionary.
( ) 32. What’s the correct order of taking vocabulary notes?
①Make your own example sentence.
②Write down the word, its English definition or translation.
③Copy an example sentence from the article or dictionary.
④Read your notebook again and add one more example sentence.
A. ②③④① B. ③④②① C. ③②①④ D. ②③①④
( ) 33. How can you make the best example sentence according to the writer?
A. By connecting it with your life.
B. By asking for help from friends.
C. By explaining words’ definitions.
D. By adding words from the article.
( ) 34. What does the underlined word “retain” probably mean in Paragraph 4?
A. Complete. B. Change. C. Remember. D. Forget.
( ) 35. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Ways of Learning New Words B. Advice on Using Grammar
C. Abilities of Creating Examples D. Tips for Translating Words

If children feel both languages are important, they will use both. So, it is necessary that children realize how useful their local language is.

A. Complete. B. Change. C. Remember. D. Forget.

A. Ways of Learning New Words B. Advice on Using Grammar

Dear David,
I am glad to hear that you’ll come to Shenzhen and stay here for one year as an exchange student.
It is quite common to feel worried about culture shock. First, you are supposed to learn some basic daily Chinese in advance, which will make your communication much easier. Besides, you’d better learn about some Chinese customs and manners online to avoid unnecessary misunderstanding. Most importantly, feel free to ask your Chinese teachers and classmates for help.
Don’t worry. I will always be there for you. I’m looking forward to your arrival and hope you have an amazing and unforgettable experience.
Best wishes,
Li Hua
