Less Waste, Greener School
We can make our school greener by reducing waste.
Some students waste paper, so we should use both sides and collect used paper for recycling. We can also bring our own cups and reusable bags instead of using new ones every day. At lunch, we should take only the food we need and ask for more if we are still hungry. These actions can save resources and reduce rubbish. I have used the same water bottle for one year. I will keep this habit and invite my friends to join me.
写作思路:先指出纸张、一次性物品和食物浪费,再说明办法及作用。个人行动须包含持续时间,可用现在完成时加for或since,并表达继续行动的意愿。

JOIN THE GREEN WEEK CHALLENGE
Hill School invites all students to try one green action for five school days. Choose an action you can do safely and keep a short record each day. You do not need to buy anything new.
Monday — Choose your action. You may use both sides of paper, bring a reusable water bottle, or turn off unused lights. Write down why you chose it.
Tuesday and Wednesday — Keep going. Record what you did and any difficulty you met. A photo is welcome, but it is not required.
Thursday — Share a solution. Talk with your partner about one difficulty and how you dealt with it. Listen to your partner's ideas as well.
Friday — Review and report. Hand in your record to your class teacher before 4:00 p.m. Add one sentence about what you want to continue next week.

My grandfather has used the same shopping bag for years. It is made from an old jacket. I used to think it looked strange, especially beside the colorful new bags in shops.
One afternoon, a handle(提手)came loose. “We should buy a new one,” I said. Grandpa took out a small sewing box. “The bag is still strong. Only this part needs help.” He showed me how to hold the material while he repaired it.
I asked why he liked the bag so much. He said the jacket once belonged to my mother. When it became too small for her, he turned it into a bag. The object was useful, and it also carried a family memory. I began to look at it differently.
At school, our class planned a reuse show. I asked Grandpa if I could bring the bag. He agreed and helped me write its story. During the show, many students stopped to look. One classmate said her family had old clothes that could become useful things too.
I have not learned to repair everything. For some objects, I still need an adult's help. But I now look for a possible second use before throwing something away. The old bag taught me that a small repair can protect both a useful object and a story worth keeping.
51. What did the writer think of the bag at first?
A. It was too large for shopping. B. It looked strange.
C. It was the newest in town. D. It belonged to a teacher.
52. Why did Grandpa repair the handle?
A. He needed a new jacket. B. He wanted to change every part.
C. There were no shops in the town. D. Most of the bag was still strong.
53. Who once wore the jacket used to make the bag?
A. The writer's mother. B. The writer's classmate.
C. The writer's father. D. The writer's teacher.
54. How did the classmates respond to the bag at the show?
A. They refused to look at any old object. B. They asked Grandpa to close his shop.
C. They all bought new jackets immediately. D. They showed interest in it and its idea.
55. What is the main change in the writer?
A. The writer only buys expensive new clothes.
B. The writer thinks about reuse before throwing things away.
C. The writer no longer uses shopping bags.
D. The writer can repair every electrical product alone.
C
The lights in a school art room often stayed on during lunch, even when the room was empty. Members of the Green Club wanted to solve the problem. They first watched the room for five days and recorded what happened.
On four of those days, the lights stayed on after the last student left. The club asked students why. Many thought someone else would return soon. Others could not tell which switch(开关)controlled which light.
The club made two changes with the teacher's help. They put clear labels beside the switches and placed a reminder near the door: “Last to leave? Check the lights.” They did not ask students to touch any wires(电线)or repair equipment.
Two weeks later, the club watched the room for another five days. This time, the lights stayed on in the empty room on only one day. The club shared the result with other classes.
“We should not say our school has solved every energy problem,” said club member Yao. “We observed just one room for a short time. But clear labels and a simple reminder seem useful here.” The group plans to try the idea in another room and check again. They have learned that an action becomes stronger when people look at the results and improve it.
56. What problem did the club notice?
A. Lights stayed on in an empty room. B. Students could not find the art room.
C. The door was always locked at lunch. D. The room had no windows.
57. Why did some students leave the lights on?
A. They thought somebody would return soon. B. They wanted to make the labels brighter.
C. They were asked to repair the wires. D. They could not leave the room.
58. What did the club add near the door?
A. A box for repairing equipment. B. A reminder to check the lights.
C. A list of students' test scores. D. A new set of wires.
59. On how many fewer days were the lights left on in the second observation?
A. Three. B. Five.
C. One. D. Four.
60. What can we reasonably learn from the study?
A. Five days prove that all students have the same habits.
B. Labels work perfectly in every building.
C. The whole school no longer uses energy.
D. Simple reminders may help in the observed room.
D
When people talk about waste sorting, they often ask, “Which color bin should I use?” Color can help, but it is not the only clue. Signs and written instructions are important too.
During a school visit, Ming noticed that one bin in the park looked different from the bins near his home. He nearly put his drink bottle into it without reading the sign. A volunteer stopped him politely and pointed to the label. It was for a different kind of waste.
The volunteer explained that students should read the information where they are. A clean paper box may be suitable for recycling, but a box covered with food may need a different kind of treatment. If students are unsure, they can ask a worker or volunteer instead of guessing.
Back at school, Ming's group designed a sorting guide for their own classroom. They used photos of the actual bins and gave examples of common classroom waste. They checked the guide with a teacher before putting it on the wall.
After a week, fewer items were in the wrong bins. The students found that a useful guide should be clear and fit the place where people use it. Memorizing a color is not enough. Paying attention, reading the signs and asking questions can turn waste sorting from a guessing game into a daily habit.
61. Why did Ming almost use the wrong bin?
A. The volunteer asked him to hurry. B. He did not read the sign carefully.
C. He had no bottle in his hand. D. He could not see any bins.
62. What should students do when unsure where an item belongs?
A. Guess only from the bin's size. B. Ask a worker or volunteer.
C. Leave it on the ground. D. Always choose the nearest bin.
63. Why did the group use photos of their actual classroom bins?
A. To show that all bins everywhere look the same.
B. To sell more cameras to students.
C. To make the guide fit the place where it would be used.
D. To avoid checking information with a teacher.
64. What happened after the guide was put up?
A. Fewer items went into the wrong bins. B. The class no longer needed to read signs.
C. Every student stopped producing waste. D. All the bins were taken away.
65. What is the writer's main message?
A. Waste sorting needs no daily practice.
B. Use local instructions and ask questions to sort waste well.
C. Remembering one color solves every sorting problem.
D. Only volunteers can put rubbish into bins.
