Changes in My Community
Great changes have taken place in my community.
In the past, the roads were narrow, and traveling was difficult. Many families lived in small and crowded houses. People had few choices for leisure activities. Now the roads are wider, and buses make traveling easier. Many families have moved into comfortable apartments. We can read in the new library or play sports at the sports center. I think these changes have made our lives better because we have more choices. I also hope neighbors can still spend time together and help each other.

When I visited my grandmother during the holiday, she was sitting beside a new smartphone. “Your uncle gave it to me,” she said. “But the buttons are so small. I am afraid of doing something wrong.”
I wanted to help. First, I wrote a long list of steps for making a video call. Grandma looked at the paper and shook her head. “I cannot remember all of this.” I realized that my list was useful to me, but not to her.
The next morning, I changed my plan. I made the words on her screen larger. Then I drew three simple pictures on a card. Each picture showed one step. I sat beside her and let her try. When she made a mistake, we started again slowly. After several tries, she called my uncle by herself. Her smile filled the screen.
Later, Grandma took out her old chess set. “Now let me teach you something,” she said. I lost the first game. She did not laugh at me. Instead, she showed me one move at a time.
Since that visit, we have often played chess during our video calls. The phone has given us a new way to stay close, but patience(耐心)has made that possible. Teaching someone is not simply giving information. It is finding a way that works for that person.
51. Why was Grandma worried at first?
A. She had forgotten her son's name.
B. She could not find her new phone.
C. She wanted to buy a larger chess set.
D. She was afraid of using the phone incorrectly.
52. Why did the writer change the teaching plan?
A. The long list was difficult for Grandma to remember.
B. The phone could no longer make video calls.
C. Grandma wanted to learn a different language.
D. The writer had lost the paper list.
53. What did the writer do in the new plan?
A. Used pictures and let Grandma practice. B. Asked Grandma to read a longer list.
C. Bought Grandma another new smartphone. D. Made all the calls instead of Grandma.
54. What does “that” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. Finishing homework on a smartphone.
B. Remembering a list of phone prices.
C. Winning every game of chess.
D. Staying close through a new way of communicating.
55. What is the best title for the story?
A. The History of Chess B. Learning from Each Other
C. A Difficult Holiday Trip D. The Cheapest Smartphone
C
A new reading room has opened near River School. It has paper books, comfortable seats and a quiet corner for reading on a phone. Some people worried that the phone corner would stop students from reading paper books. The librarian(图书管理员)decided to collect information before making a decision.
Forty students joined a four-week reading program. They could borrow books, share stories and use the phone corner to find information. Before and after the program, each student chose just one favorite leisure activity. The same forty students answered both times.

The results surprised some parents. The number choosing paper books rose, while the number choosing short videos fell. Sports remained equally popular.
The librarian did not say the room alone caused every change. Four weeks was a short time, and only forty students took part. Still, the results suggested that paper books and digital(数字的)tools could share a space. Next term, she plans to invite more students and repeat the survey.
56. Why did the librarian collect information?
A. To choose a name for the school. B. To stop all students from playing sports.
C. To find the price of every phone. D. To help decide how to use the reading room.
57. How many more students chose paper books after the program?
A. Four. B. Eighteen.
C. Eight. D. Ten.
58. Which activity had the same number of supporters both times?
A. None of the three activities. B. Watching short videos.
C. Playing sports. D. Reading paper books.
59. What does the underlined word “rose” mean in the text?
A. Gone up. B. Stayed still.
C. Fallen down. D. Gone away.
60. What can we learn from the librarian's plan?
A. She believes forty students can represent every student.
B. She wants more information before drawing a strong conclusion.
C. She has decided to remove all the paper books.
D. She thinks a longer survey is unnecessary.
D
In a class discussion about changes, one student said, “If something is new, it must be better.” Our teacher did not give an answer immediately. She asked us to look at an old market near our school.
The market has changed a lot. Its roof no longer leaks(漏水)on rainy days. Customers can pay with phones, and the stalls(摊位)have clear signs. These improvements help both sellers and customers. However, when workers first planned the changes, they wanted to remove the long wooden seats by the gate. The seats looked old and took up space.
Several residents disagreed. Every afternoon, older people sat there to rest and talk. Parents also waited there for children after school. To the workers, the seats were just old furniture. To the residents, they were a meeting place.
After listening, the workers repaired the seats instead of throwing them away. They also left enough space for people to walk past. The market became cleaner and easier to use without losing a familiar place for neighbors.
I used to judge a change by its appearance. Now I ask different questions: Who does it help? Does it create a new problem? What is worth keeping? A better future does not require us to forget everything from the past. Sometimes, a good change combines(结合)a new idea with an old value.
61. What did the teacher ask the class to study?
A. The best time to buy a phone. B. Ways to grow vegetables.
C. Changes in a nearby market. D. The cost of building a new school.
62. Why did the workers first want to remove the seats?
A. They looked old and occupied space. B. They blocked the market's only door.
C. Nobody had ever used them. D. They were too expensive to repair.
63. Why did residents want to keep the seats?
A. They could sell the seats for much money. B. They provided a place to meet and rest.
C. They thought phone payment was unsafe. D. They wanted to stop every improvement.
64. Which statement is an opinion?
A. People can pay with phones at the market.
B. The stalls have clear signs.
C. A good change should keep useful things from the past.
D. The workers repaired the wooden seats.
