Zhang Wei is a 32-year-old engineer from Shanghai. In 2020, he made a big decision—he left his well-paid job in the city and returned to his hometown in Gansu Province to start a new project.
Zhang Wei’s hometown is a small village in the mountains. When he was a child, the village was very poor. People used to farm on small pieces of land. There was no running water or electricity in many homes. Children had to walk over two hours to get to the nearest school.
After Zhang Wei finished college, he worked in Shanghai for eight years. During those years, he never forgot his hometown. He often thought about how to help the village develop. Finally, he decided to go back and bring changes.
Zhang Wei used his engineering skills to build a small factory that uses solar energy (太阳能). The factory produces machines that help farmers water their crops more efficiently. With these machines, farmers can save water and grow more vegetables. “In the past, farmers had to carry water from faraway rivers,” Zhang Wei said. “Now, our machines do the hard work.”
Over the past four years, the village has changed a lot. More than 50 families have started using solar energy in their homes. A new school has been built with the money from the factory. Young people who left the village are starting to come back to work in the new factory.
Zhang Wei feels proud of what he has done. “Development doesn’t mean everyone has to go to big cities,” he said. “We can also make our hometowns better with our knowledge and effort.”

In the 1990s, Linfen, a city in Shanxi Province, was famous for its heavy coal industry. The air was often gray with coal dust, and people rarely saw a clear blue sky. In 2004, it was named one of the most polluted cities in the world.
Today, 22 years later, Linfen looks completely different. Over the past ten years, the city has closed hundreds of outdated coal mines and planted more than 100 million trees on the hills around the city. My mom said when she was young, she couldn’t hang out after 8 PM because you could barely see the street. Now the parks are full of people dancing and walking every night.”

七、读写结合(共两节,满分25分)
第一节 任务型阅读(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
When I was very young, people in our village lived by planting fruit trees. My grandmother always took me to the orchard (果园) on the hill. At that time, the production level (水平) of fruit was still low because it was short of water there.
One day, two young men led a group of workers to our village. They learned about the difficulties we faced, and later, canals (灌溉渠) and other projects began to be built in my village, “Who are they?” I asked. “They are good men from our government.” my grandmother replied.
Soon after, I moved to the city for my junior high school. The only reason I ever came back to my hometown was my grandmother.
One day, my family and I made time to return. We were surprised because everything had changed. The canal ran past every orchard so villagers no longer had to go up and down the hill. The river was now so clean that fish swam happily in it. When we arrived home, my grandma took out some fresh pears and apples. She told us that after the water conservation project (水利工程) was completed, a policy (政策) was made to encourage more people to plant fruit trees to increase the fruit production.
Seeing the big changes in my village, I’ve realized that although more and more people work hard to live in a big city, they should never forget their hometowns where they are from.

Changes Around Me
Great changes have taken place in my community in recent years.
In the past, the small riverside path was dark and uneven, so few people used it after sunset. Last year, the community repaired the path, added lights and planted more trees. It has now become a pleasant place for walking and exercise. Older people meet there in the morning, and children ride bikes safely with their parents.
The change has made our life healthier and has brought neighbors closer. I hope more benches will be added in the future.
