Cornell Note-Taking Method
The Cornell method of taking notes was developed by Dr. Walter Pauk of Cornell University in the 1950s. It is a widely used system for noting material from a lecture or reading, and for reviewing and retaining (记住) that material.
Tips for Effective Use:
Self-Quiz Questions: Write simple questions in the cue column to test yourself later.
Summarize Even If Incomplete: Reflect on key points in your own words, even if your notes aren’t perfect.
Color Coding: Use colors to highlight key terms, definitions, and examples. This makes your notes clearer and more engaging.
Next Steps: Add actions you need to take in the summary to keep learning proactive.
Use Your Notes to Study
Concentrate on the left-hand column and summary at the bottom. These contain the most important points you will need for your assignment or exam.
Cover the right side of the page (the note-taking column) with your hand or another sheet of paper. Quiz yourself by giving answers to the potential questions that you included in the left column. Then uncover the right side and check your comprehension.
Reviewing frequently over a longer period of time, rather than cramming before a test, will greatly increase your retention and deepen your understanding of course material. With your effective notes made using the Cornell system, you will be able to study efficiently and with minimal stress.
1. What shared feature do the Cue Column and Summary Column have?
A. Act as decorative sections. B. Concentrate on core concepts.
C. Be completed during the lecture. D. Document detailed lecture content.
2. Which is the correct way to study with Cornell notes?
A. Skip the cue column during revision. B. Rewrite comprehensive notes regularly.
C. Intensive memorization right before exams. D. Cover notes and test recall before checking.
3. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To compare note-taking methods. B. To illustrate how note-taking evolved.
C. To describe the benefits of color coding. D. To promote an effective note-taking method.
B
I was driving when my phone alerted me to a new email. Filled with eager anticipation, I pulled over, turned on my hazard lights, and opened it. My emotions quickly changed as I learned, for the sixth and final time, that I had been denied a promotion to full professor. My institution didn’t seem to value what I brought to the table. But when I told my family that night, my children offered a surprisingly positive response. They were excited to see what I was going to do next, they said. They apparently knew long before I did that losing my bid for a promotion would turn out to be the best thing that could have happened for me.
This had been the final step in a long process spanning 15 months and involving so much effort. I had started by studying successful promotion bids and asking senior scholars for frank discussions about my readiness. I had carefully prepared my application packet, summarizing everything I had achieved in my career. For more than a year, I had spent hours every day trying to prove my worth to my university.
To my surprise, having a final answer brought a welcome sense of closure. As a first step toward healing, I decided to prioritize my own values and follow my own internal compass. I disconnected from people in my life who violated my values, cultivated my relationships with those who share my priorities and bring out the best in me, and spent more time with my family. I founded a nonprofit that helps first-generation and low-income students and young professionals advance in the workforce while serving their community. This initiative had long been a dream of mine, but I never pursued it because typical academic hiring and promotion don’t reward such efforts. Now, such considerations were no longer my North Star.
Five months after that email from top leadership, I found myself in the car again, experiencing another career-defining moment. I may have lost my bid for a big promotion, but in the end, it brought me to the right place.
4. What did the author feel after he read the email?
A. Anxious and annoyed. B. Relieved and peaceful.
C. Disappointed and sorrowful. D. Embarrassed and ashamed.
5. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A. What contributions the writer had made. B. How helpful senior scholars had been.
C. How successful the career had been. D. What preparations the writer had made.
6. Which of the following would the writer probably agree with?
A. Internal compass is to be developed.
B. Success is far more than a title or a rank.
C. Serving the community may heal a broken heart.
D. One’s real value first lies in his family interaction.
7. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Emails: my North Star
B. Full professor: a double-edged sword
C. A career setback becomes a great opportunity
D. An academic career witnesses a failed promotion
C
A “memory breakdown” is often said to be the major cognitive problem of our time. In a recent piece in The Chronicle Review, Daniel Mercer argued that “students can’t remember even simple facts without checking their phones”, and many schools have quietly lowered expectations for memorizing dates, formulas and vocabulary.
Yet complaints about weak memory are hardly new. In the late 19th century, British educator Henry Latham blamed that cheap printed books would destroy students’ power to remember, because they no longer needed to keep long passages in their heads. Over the decades, similar denunciations have returned each time a new tool has entered classrooms.
Mercer suggests that rather than a simple loss of ability, we may be seeing a shift in how people choose to use their memory. Many students now treat their phones as an “external brain”, much as earlier generations treated the family bookshelf. At the same time, the use of digital calendars, search engines and cloud storage continue to rise. This points to a change not in whether people can remember, but in what they believe is worth remembering. “Students can still memorize,” Mercer wrote. “They’re just deciding to memorize different things.”
This leads to a deeper question: What kind of memory do we truly need, and why? Psychologists often distinguish between recall — producing information with no help — and recognition, which is using clues to find what we once knew. In classic “change blindness” experiments, people fail to notice that a stranger they are speaking to has been secretly replaced by another person, because their attention is on the task, not the face. It shows that relying on external cues (提示) and context is not always a weakness; it may reflect a different way of managing limited mental resources.
Could today’s young people be developing useful memory strategies that we have not yet learned to value? What about their skill at searching huge databases in seconds, or at linking ideas across videos, chats and online documents? These new habits of remembering challenge us to reconsider — with the history of past “memory breakdown” in mind — how we might understand and support human memory in more flexible, forward-looking ways.
8. What does the underlined word “denunciations” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Origins. B. Reminders. C. Criticisms. D. Indicators.
9. What does the growing use of digital tools suggest according to Mercer?
A. People no longer need to train their memory.
B. People are changing the way they use their memory.
C. Schools are forcing students to rely on external devices.
D. Modern technology is destroying traditional learning tools.
10. Why does the author mention the “change blindness” experiments?
A. To display that people are easily fooled by visual tricks.
B. To prove that using outside cues can be a reasonable strategy.
C. To demonstrate that face recognition is more important than tasks.
D. To illustrate that most memories are formed without our awareness.
11. What will probably be discussed next?
A. Challenges facing the young generation.
B. More valuable lessons taught by history.
C. Ways to support memory in the digital age.
D. Effects of relying on external memory tools.

“The United States may fall behind China in AI,” warned Jensen Huang, the boss of Nvidia. That may seem surprising — for much of the past decade America has been ahead in the AI race, home to advanced companies producing frontier models. But Mr Huang’s concern related to an equally important ingredient of innovation: human talent.
To better understand the flow of AI talent, The Economist conducted a study which tracked the education histories of researchers who presented papers at the December 2025 edition of the Conference on NeurIPS, the world’s largest and most influential AI gathering. Using a mixture of AI and manual search, we randomly sampled the researchers and identified their educational backgrounds.
The study revealed 51% of the AI researchers began their careers in China. In 2019, just 29% did. Over the same period, the share who started out in America fell from roughly 20% to 12%. The study also shows the extent to which America’s AI efforts rely on Chinese-born researchers. Among authors working for American institutions, roughly 35% have a Chinese undergraduate degree.
China is increasingly holding on to its AI talent. China prioritizes education in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM): around two-fifths of Chinese university students study STEM subjects, roughly double America’s share. At the same time, initiatives to attract talented researchers back to China, such as the Qiming Plan, offer salaries of more than 700,000 yuan ($100,000), generous research grants and help with housing. Meanwhile, America has become a less attractive destination. Funding cuts and visa uncertainty have unsettled would-be applicants, as has increasing suspicion of their loyalties. More are therefore heading home.
America’s appeal has not disappeared. But the numbers increasingly favour China. Around 37% of the world’s top AI researchers now work in Chinese organizations, compared with 32% in American ones. The battle for talent looks increasingly one-sided.
12. How does Huang view the rise of AI in China?
A. Anxious. B. Skeptical. C. Neutral. D. Unconcerned.
13. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The survey result. B. The research design.
C. The study background. D. The technical challenge.
14. What can we learn from the study?
A. Chinese AI talent takes the lead. B. American institutions value talents.
C. AI professionals earn higher degrees. D. America is no longer attractive to talents.
15. How does China hold on to its AI talents?
A. By building loyalty and issuing visas. B. By offering education and providing funding.
C. By raising investment and opening campuses. D. By cultivating specialists and welcoming foreigners.

On a cold, damp evening in mid-November, a sharp wind cut through the streets, but Jack paid little attention to the chill. As a delivery rider, he had just finished a few smooth orders, his hands warm from the hot milk tea cups he’d been carrying, and his spirits fairly good. Stepping out of a milk tea shop, he found the spot where his second-hand electric bike had been parked now empty. In an instant, his heart sank, and a wave of hopelessness swept over him, turning his calm evening into a nightmare. That bike was far more than just a vehicle; it was his lifeline, the only way for him to earn daily income and cover his living expenses.
Panic set in as he remembered the undelivered orders — especially a cup of hot milk tea for Ms. White, a regular customer. His hand trembled as he pressed the voice button, his words laced with sorrow and anxiety as he apologized repeatedly, offering to pay for the undelivered drink. To his great surprise, Ms. White did not respond with anger or complaint, but with gentle kindness. Ms. White told him not to worry and to take his time finding his bike.
Her understanding words calmed him, but also deepened his sense of responsibility. “She is so kind. I cannot let her down,” he thought. For nearly two hours, he searched every nearby street, but there was no sign of his bike. As night grew darker and the wind bit harder, Jack clenched his fists and made a firm decision. He took out his poor savings, bought a bag of fresh apples and a new cup of hot milk tea, then set off on foot to Ms. White’s apartment, several kilometers away. The wind bit into his thin jacket, and his old shoes grew heavy with mud, but the thought of keeping his promise and maintaining his integrity kept him moving forward through the dimly lit urban landscape.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Finally, breathless, Jack reached Ms. White’s doorstep and rang the bell.

【答案】4. C 5. D 6. B 7. C

【答案】8. C 9. B 10. B 11. C

根据上文“In the late 19th century, British educator Henry Latham blamed that cheap printed books would destroy students' power to remember, because they no longer needed to keep long passages in their heads. (19世纪末,英国教育家亨利·拉瑟姆指责廉价印刷书籍会摧毁学生的记忆力,因为他们不再需要将长篇段落记在脑海中。)”可知,此处blamed表示批评、指责,下文“similar denunciations have returned each time a new tool has entered classrooms(每当有新工具进入课堂时,类似的denunciations就会再次出现)”中similar说明denunciations与上文blamed含义相近。所以“denunciations”意思为“批评”与Criticisms同义。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Mercer suggests that rather than a simple loss of ability, we may be seeing a shift in how people choose to use their memory. (Mercer认为,与其说是简单的能力丧失,不如说我们正在目睹人们选择使用记忆的方式发生了转变。)”以及“Students can still memorize. They're just deciding to memorize different things. (学生仍然能够记忆。他们只是决定记住不同的东西。)”可知,Mercer认为数字工具的日益使用表明人们正在改变使用记忆的方式,而非丧失记忆能力。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“In classic “change blindness” experiments, people fail to notice that a stranger they are speaking to has been secretly replaced by another person, because their attention is on the task, not the face. It shows that relying on external cues (提示) and context is not always a weakness; it may reflect a different way of managing limited mental resources. (在经典的 “变化盲视” 实验中,人们无法察觉正在交谈的陌生人已经被悄悄换成了另一个人,因为他们的注意力集中在任务上,而非对方的面孔。这表明依赖外部提示和语境并不总是一种弱点;它可能反映了一种管理有限心理资源的不同方式。)”可知,作者提及“变化盲视”实验是为了证明使用外部线索可以是一种合理的策略,而非弱点。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“These new habits of remembering challenge us to reconsider — with the history of past “memory breakdown” in mind — how we might understand and support human memory in more flexible, forward-looking ways. (这些新的记忆习惯促使我们重新思考——考虑到过去“记忆衰退”的历史——我们如何以更灵活、更具前瞻性的方式理解和支持人类记忆。)”可知,文章结尾提出了以灵活、前瞻性方式理解和支持记忆的方向,接下来最可能讨论的是在数字时代支持记忆的具体方式。

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Finally, breathless, Jack reached Ms. White’s doorstep and rang the bell. The door opened, revealing a woman whose expression shifted from curiosity to surprise and then to heartfelt sympathy as she saw the exhausted man before her. His clothes were dusty, but the gifts in his hands were held with care. “Ms. White, these are for you,” he grinned, offering the apples and milk tea. “Wishing you happiness and good health. I am truly sorry about the delay.” Tears welled up in Ms. White’s eyes. “Oh, Jack! You shouldn’t have walked such a long way just for this!” she said, her voice soft with emotion for his unshakable honesty, even amid his own misfortune!
Deeply moved by Jack’s action, Ms. White decided to share the story online that night. She posted a video describing what happened, writing, “Even when caught in his own storm, he still reached out to warm others.” The post quickly went viral, receiving millions of likes and shares. Strangers were touched by the ordinary man’s extraordinary act. The wave of kindness soon reached his delivery company. They promptly responded, providing Jack with a brand-new e-bike and a cash reward to support his honest work. Even more wonderfully, with the help of numerous alert eyes online, his original bike was located and returned.
