Ⅰ.阅读理解
Over the course of six decades Leonardo Del Vecchio, a businessman from Italy, built Luxottica into the world’s largest maker of glasses and sunglasses. In 2018 he merged(合并) his firm with Essilor, a French lens manufacturer(镜片制造商), to create EssilorLuxottica that is today worth over $140bn and employs some 200,000 people.
Now Francesco Milleri, who was appointed CEO of Luxottica in 2017 and of the combined group in 2020, is looking for the company’s next act. His first idea is to become the leader in smart glasses. The ambition is not entirely new:the firm partnered with Google, a tech company, on its Google Glass, but the device was discontinued in 2015 due to its poor performance.
Yet there are other optimists who think the moment for smart glasses has arrived. In 2021 Snap, a social-media firm, announced a pair of AR glasses. In 2024, Apple began shipping its AR headset, the Vision Pro. EssilorLuxottica’s latest move into the technology is in partnership with Meta, another tech firm. The first version it launched in 2021 had only slight success. It will be hoping that the new one, which has a longer battery life, will do better.
Mr Milleri’s second idea is the development of glasses with built-in hearing aids. The company’s glasses, by contrast, will look no different from other glasses and cost well below the price of a regular hearing aid. In 2023, his company acquired Nuance Hearing, an Israeli startup. Its technology uses an algorithm(算法) to detect where sounds are coming from based on when they are picked up by different microphones. The glasses it has developed then process the voice of the person the wearer is speaking to and send it through tiny built-in speakers. Nothing goes in the wearer’s ears.
Mr Milleri’s enthusiasm for the concept is personal. Mr Del Vecchio suffered from hearing loss in his later years and often lamented that hearing aids were uncomfortable to wear with glasses. That inspired Mr Milleri and Leonardo Maria Del Vecchio, one of the founder’s sons, to pursue the idea. Whether they prove to be farsighted remains to be seen.

Unloading trucks is tiring for people, but hardly an intellectual challenge. For robots it is completely different. Robots never tire. They do, however, have problems interpreting the data streaming in from the cameras that are their eyes. Seeing where one box in the back of a crowded truck ends and another begins is second nature to a human being. But even the best artificial-vision systems struggle to handle that. The next question is what the robot should do with what it sees. The less tidy the contents, the greater the problem. People learn to do such things gradually. Machines have to learn, too.
Unloading trucks is therefore one of the few parts of operating a warehouse(仓库) that has resisted automation. The robotics division of Honeywell, a large American technology company, has come up with a vehicle-sized unit that fits onto the back of a truck. It has a large arm fitted with suction cups(吸盘) which can pick up several boxes at a time. An individual human worker can unload between 600 and 1,200 boxes an hour. Honeywell hopes that, once its robot is perfected, a single crew chief will be able to oversee the unloading of three or four trucks, each at rates of up to 1,500 boxes an hour.
In Massachusetts, a firm called Boston Dynamics takes a different approach from Honeywell’s. Stretch, the first it has custom-built for a particular task, is smaller and more mobile than Honeywell’s robot, and is able to move easily from one truck to another. It sports a single arm with sensors to handle boxes weighing up to about 25 kg. Unlike Honeywell’s system, Stretch can already manage the trick of examining a wall of boxes, working out their sizes and shapes, and choosing which to pick up first. It is, though, slower. The aim is that it will be able to handle 800 cases an hour.
The next task, which both companies are now engaged in, is to run the unloading process backward by using robots to load trucks in the first place. The firm that perfects this trick will allow warehouses to be almost completely automated.
5. Why are robots compared with humans in Paragraph 1?
A. To demonstrate robots’ current systems.
B. To highlight the difficulties robots face.
C. To emphasize robots’ latest applications.
D. To introduce the procedures robots follow.
6. What does Honeywell expect of its robot?
A. To be able to unload trucks efficiently.
B. To fit in well with various vehicles.
C. To serve several vehicles at a time.
D. To operate totally on its own.
7. How does Stretch differ from Honeywell’s robot?
A. It works faster. B. It is less flexible.
C. It seems much bigger. D. It is more intelligent.
8. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Warehouses Are Now Automated Thanks to Robots
B. Competitions Between Two Robot Companies
C. Robots Are to Start Unloading Trucks Soon
D. The Potential Tasks Robots Can Carry Out

At its core, journal writing is the intentional practice of setting aside time for yourself to write and reflect on your thoughts, feelings, and life experiences. It is a personal activity that allows you to express the narrative of your life. __1__ It is targeted at you, the writer, making it a uniquely honest and intimate form of creative self-expression.
So, that may help explain why journal writing is powerful. __2__ All you simply need is pretty much a pen, a journal, and a determination to write. And you have the right to write whenever you feel like writing.
__3__ By insisting on writing, you will have a better understanding of what you have been through, what you need, and what you should throw away. This simple act of putting words to your experiences can be worthwhile in your lifetime.
One question for those learning how to write journals is what they should write about. There are no strict rules about what makes up “proper” journals. Just remember: You can write anything that matters to you. That’s because journal writing is about the process, not perfection. __4__ Many journals may begin with the concrete details of a day.__5__ This can serve as a warm-up, allowing your writing muscles to engage before diving into deeper reflection. From this starting point, you may naturally transition into exploring your thoughts and feelings about these events. Grab your pen, get curious in your journal, and start the journey of exploring yourself.
A. Another advantage is its convenience.
B. Besides, journal writing is challenging.
C. Actually, journal writing helps you to enrich your life.
D. It is a judgment-free zone where all topics are welcome.
E. It is unlike other forms of writing that may be created for an audience.
F. You may write what happened or who you interacted with in daily life.
G. So, setting a limit on the content of your journals is the key to perfection.
