This whole mess started about two months ago, when Jay felt pretty terrible and didn't feel like doing homework.
“Hi, Jay. How was your day? Do you have any homework?” Mom asked, when he came home from school. “Uh, I don't have any.” he said. “I finished it at school.” It was only a little lie, he thought. And besides, he told himself, he would just do his homework on the bus ride the next morning, so maybe it didn't even matter.
A few days later it happened again. When Mom asked about his homework, he pulled out his math worksheet but left the rest in his backpack. So easy! Before long, though, his backpack was growing heavy with unfinished homework. The problem was, as the backpack got heavier, so did his heart.
Jay feared seeing the look on his parents’ faces when they found out. Walking in the door, he dropped his heavy backpack and walked into the kitchen. “Hi, Mom,” he said. She hugged him and stood back. “Jay, I got an email from your teacher today. She said you lied about your homework. We need to talk. ”

Last month, our class planned a weekend hike to Green Hill — everyone was excited, especially me, since I’d never been there before. My best friend Lina and I had talked about this trip for weeks. We even pinky — swore to stick together the whole time, so neither of us would miss a single fun moment.
The night before, I spread out all my things on the desk and packed my bag carefully. I put in two packs of my favorite lemon cookies, a big water bottle filled with cold orange juice, and even a small first-aid kit my dad gave me.
On Saturday morning, we met at the school gate under the sun. After Mr. Zhang , our teacher, checked our bags, we set off. Lina walked beside me, and the first hour was great: we sang loudly, pointed out birds, and laughed at Tom’s jokes about his dog. But when we reached the halfway point, the sky suddenly turned dark. Dark clouds rolled in quickly, covering the sun completely. “It’s going to rain,” Mr. Zhang called out, “Let’s pick up the pace to the rest stop ahead!” We all nodded and started walking faster, but just five minutes later, the rain started pouring down. The dirt path soon became slippery, and I tripped over a tree root. I fell hard, and my left ankle hurt. I tried to stand, but my foot felt numb — I couldn’t put weight on it.
Lina stopped at once, ignoring the rain soaking her. She knelt to check my swelling ankle.
“Are you OK?” She asked worriedly. Tears mixed with rain on my face.
“I can’t walk......, I’m ruining the hike,” I whispered. Lina shook her head firmly. “Don’t say that. We’re in this together — we’ll fix it.”

The ceremony (庆典) of my graduation from graduate school would be held in a school hall that I had never visited.
Somehow I heard about the stairs that I’d have to pass in the ceremony. I decided I couldn’t bear the pressure of steps. Walking across the stage was going to be scary enough.
I called my friend Sally in tears and told her I was not going. The stairs were driving me crazy. We had been through many hard times during graduate school. We took all our classes together, studied together, and edited each other’s work.
Sally was like my note-taker because I write slowly due to cerebral palsy (脑瘫). She knew I needed a good cry when I called her because I didn’t know how to do it.
Sally said she’d take care of everything; she would make a plan. My breathing slowed, and I could feel my body again. I knew that I had to sit quietly and let Sally work her plan, whatever that was. She made me promise that I would be at the school hall in an hour to get into my full dress.
I arrived at the school hall and saw the stairs on both sides of the stage. I would walk up on one side, shake everyone’s hand, and then walk down the other side to leave the stage.
It wasn’t just the stairs I worried about; it was the handshake, too. My cerebral palsy mostly affects my right side, giving me limited coordination (协调性) of my right hand. Not only would I need to walk the stairs and the stage in front of hundreds, but I also would need to shake hands with five teachers using my right hand.
The whole day was falling apart fast, and my tears would flow again. But I knew that I just had to trust Sally. When I found her, she rushed over and hugged me. “I have it all worked out,” she said. “It’s going to be fine.”

The day Leo transferred to our high school was unremarkable, except for the silence that followed his introduction. “This is Leo. His family just moved here from overseas. Please make him feel welcome,” Mrs. Davis, our English teacher, said with an encouraging smile. Leo murmured a quiet “hello,” his accent thick and unfamiliar, and quickly took the empty seat at the back of the class. From that day on, he became a ghost (幽灵) in the hallway — present but unseen.
The language barrier was like a wall. During discussions, when called upon, Leo would struggle to find the right words, his face flushing with frustration. Whispers and suppressed (强忍住的) giggles (咯咯笑) from a few classmates, especially from Mark and his friends, often followed his attempts. I saw the embarrassment in his eyes, a silent beg to be left alone. I wanted to say something to offer help, but I feared being associated with the “outsider” and becoming a target myself, so I remained a silent observer, with my sympathy locked away.
One day, our English teacher gave us a pairwork project. We needed to prepare a short play together. When hearing I was paired with Leo, I felt a little worried. I saw Leo sitting in the comer, looking lonely and nervous, as if he would be ignored again. Seeing the worry on his face, I remembered my own feeling when I first joined a new club. I knew it was time to be brave.

On a crisp autumn weekend,17-year-old Lila volunteered at Living Sky Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. Her task was to assist with feeding orphaned (成为孤儿) animals, a job she’d dreamed of since childhood. Among the rescues was a tiny fox cub (幼崽) with matted fur and frightened eyes, named Rusty. The vets warned that Rusty was weak and unlikely to survive without constant care — he refused to eat and shrank (退缩) from human touch.
Lila spent every free moment with Rusty. She softly talked to him while preparing his meals and left a warm blanket in his little house. After a week, Rusty finally took a small taste of the food from her palm. Just as their bond deepened, the center received urgent news: A wildfire was spreading rapidly toward the area. Removing all animals was impossible, so the staff decided to move critical cases to a safer facility 30 miles away.
In the chaos of packing, Lila was assigned to transport Rusty. But halfway there, her car hit a pothole, and the cage door swung open. Rusty surged into the dense woods before Lila could react. Panicked, she called out his name and searched until dusk, but there was no sign of the cub. Desperate and guilty, she returned to the center, where the staff comforted her but admitted Rusty had little chance of survival in the wild, especially with the fire approaching.
That night, Lila couldn’t sleep. She thought of Rusty’s fragile body and how he’d started to trust her. Determined to find him, she grabbed a flashlight and a bag of his favorite food, and set off at dawn. The woods were quiet, and smoke from the distant fire hung in the air. Suddenly, she heard a faint cry of pain. Following the sound, she found Rusty — trapped in a hunter’s trap, his leg bleeding. Before she could free him, a loud crack echoed through the trees: A branch, weakened by the fire, was falling straight toward them.

My friend Ollie found a super-cool treasure near his house — a little bird.
On my way to the park, I saw Ollie sitting on his steps, signaling me to be quiet. To my surprise, the cutest little bird was perched right on his shoulder! It seemed completely at ease! Ollie explained that it had hopped onto him without any fear. We figured it must be someone’s lost pet.
Ollie’s grandmother, Abuela, came out with a dish of water and suggested calling the animal shelter. When we got through, the man on the phone told us that no one had reported a missing bird recently. He advised us to put up “Found Bird” flyers in the neighborhood. Meanwhile, I suggested we also post Blue’s information and cute pictures on our local community’s online bulletin board, hoping the power of the internet would help. Abuela’s friend Michiko, who knew a lot about birds, brought a cage, some seeds and helpful advice. A wave of relief washed over Ollie when Michiko approved of the name “Blue” that Ollie had given her.
That afternoon, Ollie and I were busy making “Found Bird” flyers. Blue, perched happily on the edge of the table, provided a sweet soundtrack with her cheerful chirps. Abuela watched us with a warm smile, sighing softly, “I would miss Blue’s beautiful songs”. Seeing this as the perfect opportunity, Ollie looked up, his eyes full of hope.“Abuela,” he begged, his voice a little shaky, “if...if no one claims her, could we please keep her? I promise I’ ll be fully responsible” Looking at Ollie’s earnest face, then at the content little bird, Abuela finally nodded slowly. “Well,” she said firmly, “we must try our best to find her owner first.”
However, one flyer Ollie made was full of “accidents” — the picture of Blue was glued upside down, and the title mistakenly read “Found Bread”. He admitted he might have messed up a little on purpose, because he was conflicted between his desire to keep Blue and his responsibility to find her owner.
We put up all the correct flyers. After a month and a half with no response, Blue officially became a member of Ollie’s family, her cheerful songs filling their home with lasting joy.

Lily, a freshman with a warm smile, admired her classmate Mia’s outgoing personality. Mia was always laughing with classmates, speaking confidently in class, and making everyone feel welcome — something Lily tried to do. Though she wanted to be friends with Mia, Lily didn’t know what to do.
One Friday morning, after Mia gave an amazing English speech in class, Lily felt inspired. She wrote a note, praising Mia’s clear pronunciation and confident performance, expressing her wish to be friends with Mia. Lily gave the note to Mia, and at the very moment, the bell rang. Mia put it in her English dictionary.

The shopping was over. My two-year-old daughter sat comfortably in one of my shopping carts, surrounded by a lot of bought items. Shopping once a month was a well-planned process. My shopping list was organized well so that I wouldn’t miss even one item.
At the checkout, a gentleman in a suit stood behind me, holding fewer items. He looked up at his watch, then at me and smiled. While my daughter behaved well, I knew I’d taken her out for too long, and she might not stand it soon. Even so, the man obviously had somewhere important to go, and if he stayed behind me, he’d have to wait a long time.
“Why don’t you check out first?” I said, moving the cart backwards. “You only bought a few items.”
“Thank you,” he replied appreciatively, stepping ahead of me.
My daughter gave him a warm smile and greeted him in her sweetest voice.
“Hello,” he replied, surprised by my daughter’s kindness, and a happy look appeared on his face.
As the belt moved forward, I started unloading my cart. I was only halfway finished unloading the first cart when I suddenly thought of something. I had taken out my bank card the night before and I couldn’t remember if I had put it back in my wallet.
I hurriedly took out my wallet and opened it. My heart dropped. The bank card wasn’t there
The gentleman in front of me had paid and was picking up his groceries(食品杂货).
“I’ve forgotten my bank card. Do you accept a credit card?” I asked the cashier hopefully. “I’m sorry, ma’am. We only accept debit cards(借记卡) or cash,” she answered.
“It will take me an hour to run home and an hour back. Can you just put my stuff on the side please?” I was discouraged. All my careful planning seemed useless now. The one-hour shopping had made me very tired, and I didn’t know if my daughter could stand staying in the car for another two hours.

Emma was a talented singer, but a coming competition made her extremely nervous. She had practiced for weeks, yet the pressure kept building. Her older sister, Mia, a student from a music college, had always been her biggest supporter. Since they were young, Mia attended every performance, cheering loudly and offering encouragement. This time, Mia offered to help Emma practice at home.
One evening, in their living room, Emma sang her chosen song. Mia listened carefully but soon started pointing out problems. “Your voice sounds shaky (颤抖的) when you sang the last line,” she said gently. “Try to breathe deeper.” Emma nodded and tried to do better. However, as they continued, Mia added more comments.
Actually, Emma knew every single one of Mia’s suggestions was correct. Yet, the more she tried to fix the problems, the tighter her throat felt. She took a deeper breath as advised, but she kept failing. She wasn’t just singing poorly; she was singing worse than before. With each failure, she became more and more anxious.
Finally, the breaking point came. “Stop criticizing (批评) me. You’re just making things worse” she shouted angrily. Shocked, Mia fell into silence, looking at her with a hurt expression. Later, Mia left the room without another word.
For the next few days, the sisters avoided each other. Emma sang better after calming down, but something felt missing. She remembered all the times Mia had been there for her; staying up late to listen, bringing water during practice, and celebrating every small success. On the night before the competition, Emma lay in bed, realizing that Mia’s words came from love — she only wanted to help Emma improve. Feeling regretful, she went to sleep with a heavy heart.
The next day, Emma still felt bad, but she had to get up — it was the day of the competition. Without her sister by her side, she washed and ate breakfast in low spirits. Before leaving, she noticed Mia’s door was still closed. “She will not come to watch me perform this time,” she thought sadly.

In a small Edinburgh café, the winter wind howled at the windows as Jessy huddled (蜷缩) over an old and torn notebook. Her baby lay fast asleep beside her, unaware of the magic in her mother's words. Single, unemployed, and weighed down by depression, Jessy found comfort and peace in the pages — here, she didn’t feel like a struggling parent, but a creator building a world where a boy with magic powers would fight darkness in a fantasy world with courage.
When she typed the last sentence of the manuscript, a ray of hope flashed in her chest. But that hope was soon destroyed, over and over again. Publisher after publisher sent back letters, their words sharp like icy ice: “Too difficult for young readers. ” “Not commercial enough for our list. ” “Children won't connect with a story about magic. ” One even suggested she “find a steady day job” and forget her “unrealistic dream. ”
Rejection letters piled up on her kitchen table, each one a heavy blow to her already weak confidence. Money grew tighter and the debts grew higher — she counted pennies to buy milk for her baby, and the heating in her small flat stayed off most nights. Life was tough for her. Doubt whispered in her ear: Was this dream really worth sticking to? But every time she wanted to give up, she thought of the main characters in her book, who suffered great loss yet still held onto hope.
Jessy refused to quit. She stayed up late revising small details, polishing dialogues, and even rewrote a few scenes to make them more vivid. Absorbed in the world of fantasy and magic, she wrote day and night, putting all her heart and soul into her story. For her, it wasn’t just a story; it was a promise that even in the darkest times, courage could light the way. “Not until every single publisher turned me down was I going to give up! ” she said to herself.

【答案】The postman went to houses to deliver mails during the New Year celebrations. When he thought about the little girl, he started thinking it wouldn’t be right to meet her empty-handed during the festival. After much thought he bought a small box of chocolates. The next day, he went to her house and knocked, waiting for a while as usual. When the girl opened the door, the old postman handed her chocolates and said, “Take this small gift from your uncle’s side.” She was happy to get that and asked the postman to wait for some time.
After a while, she brought a big box and handed it to the postman. She said, “Uncle, this is a gift from my side to you.” The postman was surprised to see the box which was decorated with red ribbon. After thinking for a minute, he said, “You are like a daughter to me. How can I accept a gift from you?” The girl demanded, “Please don’t refuse my gift.” The postman kept the box and lovingly put his hand on the girl’s head. After going home, when he opened the box, the postman found a pair of shoes in it.

Paragraph 1
First, Lina took out a towel from her bag and dried my face. Then she helped me sit against a tree. She searched in my first-aid kit and found a cold pack, gently pressing it on my swollen ankle. “This will reduce the pain,” she explained. When I said I didn’t want to slow everyone down, she shook her head: “Your ankle matters more. Let’s call Mr. Zhang first, but we’ll walk to the rest stop together later.” She pulled out her phone to tell the teacher our location, then shared her sandwich with me, saying I needed energy.
Paragraph 2:
With Lina’s help, I stood up slowly, putting most of my weight on my good foot. She walked beside me, holding my arm, and we moved forward step by step. When we reached the rest stop, all my classmates cheered. Later, as we sat by the fire, Lina said, “See? We didn’t give up.” I nodded, smiling. That hike didn’t go as planned, but it taught me something important: true friends don’t leave you when you’re in trouble — they help you keep going.

【答案】One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
Tom felt very angry. His face burned with frustration as he shouted, “That was a dirty move!” The referee blew the whistle sharply, but Tom kept jabbing his finger at David. “You always play like this!” His teammates pulled him back, yet his chest still heaved with rage. Deep down, though, a small voice whispered: What if it really was an accident? He shook his head, pushing the thought away. No — David had been too aggressive all game. This time, he wouldn’t just let it go.
Paragraph 2:
After the game, Tom was still angry. But as he watched David limp toward the locker room, guilt pricked at him. Swallowing his pride, he jogged to catch up. “Hey,” Tom muttered, scuffing his shoe on the floor. David turned, wary. “Look… I overreacted. I shouldn’t have pushed you.” David studied him, then nodded. “I didn’t mean to knock you over — I was just going for the ball.” A beat of silence, then Tom extended his hand. “Truce?” David grinned and clasped it. “Truce. Next game, no hard feelings?” “Deal,” Tom agreed. The tightness in his chest finally eased.

As my name got closer, I still couldn’t help feeling frightened. My heart raced, and my legs felt shaky under the heavy gown. Sally squeezed my hand reassuringly. Just then, a strong classmate appeared beside me. Together with Sally, they each offered me an arm for support. Taking a deep breath, I leaned on them. Step by step, we slowly ascended the intimidating staircase. The hundreds of eyes watching felt overwhelming, but the firm grip of my friends anchored me. Their presence gave me the courage to keep moving forward towards the stage.
After my classmate and Sally walked me up the stairs, I found no handshakes, but hugs. To my immense surprise and relief, each teacher, one after another, stepped forward not with an outstretched hand, but with open arms. They embraced me warmly and sincerely. The overwhelming fear instantly melted into tears of gratitude. In that moment, Sally’s brilliant plan became clear. This simple, heartfelt gesture bypassed my physical worry completely. Walking off the stage felt lighter, filled with a profound sense of accomplishment and deep appreciation for Sally’s kindness and the teachers’ understanding.

【答案】Walking to Leo, I smiled and suggested we start the project. At first, he seemed surprised, but then a glimmer of hope flickered in his eyes. We sat down together and began to discuss the play. Leo’s ideas were creative and unique, but he still had trouble expressing himself clearly. I listened patiently, helping him find the right words and explaining the meanings of some difficult expressions. As we worked together, I found myself enjoying his company. We spent many afternoons practicing the play, and gradually, Leo’s confidence grew.
The day for our performance finally came, and we stood in front of the class. My heart was pounding with nervousness, but Leo looked calm and determined. As we started acting, I was amazed by how well Leo did. His lines were delivered with confidence, and his expressions were vivid. The class was completely silent, watching our performance intently. When we finished, the classroom erupted into thunderous applause. Leo and I looked at each other and smiled, knowing we had overcome the language barrier and won the respect of our classmates. From that day on, Leo was no longer a ghost in the hallway. He became my good friend, and we helped each other grow and learn.

【答案】 Frozen with fear for a second, Lila threw herself over Rusty. The burning branch crashed right beside them, sending small sparks flying. Ignoring the slight heat on her shoulder, she tried hard to open the hunter’s trap, her fingers shaking as she loosened the strings around Rusty’s bleeding leg. Rusty let out a soft whimper but didn’t move away — for the first time, he got close to her hand. With the fire drawing nearer, Lila wrapped Rusty in her jacket and ran through the smoky woods, talking softly to him to calm his fears until they saw the safe facility’s lights in the distance.
Exhausted, they reached the safe facility and Rusty stayed close to Lila. He followed her every step, his once-frightened eyes now calm and trusting. When the vets came to check his leg, Rusty hid behind Lila’s legs, refusing to leave her side. Later, as Lila fed him warm food, he gently touched her palm with his nose — no longer the scared cub who shrank from human contact. Their shared danger had turned a weak bond into strong trust, and Lila knew her dream had come true in a way far more profound than she had ever imagined as a child.

【答案】 With Blue now a beloved family member, Ollie’s days were filled with joyful responsibility. Every morning, he woke up early to refill her seed bowl and fresh water, chatting softly as the little bird hopped onto his finger, chirping in response. After school, they’d sit on the porch steps — Blue perched on his shoulder, singing along while Ollie shared stories of class. He cleaned her cage diligently every weekend, and Abuela often baked cookies while humming to Blue’s cheerful tunes. The bird’s presence turned ordinary days warm, her songs weaving through their home like a sweet melody.
One sunny afternoon, a timid knock interrupted their peace. A girl around Ollie’s age stood at the door, clutching the crumpled “Found Bread” flyer. “I think this is my bird Sky,” she said, voice trembling, describing a tiny white spot under her wing. Ollie’s heart ached, but he gently fetched Blue. At the sight of the girl, Blue flew into her arms, chirping excitedly. Tears blurred Ollie’s eyes, but he smiled — sad to part, yet grateful Blue had found her way back to her true owner.

One day after school, she stopped Mia. With a nervous but determined look, Lily asked Mia if she had read the note. Mia paused, her expression puzzled. “Note? What note?” she asked. Lily reminded her about the note she placed in Mia’s dictionary after the speech. Suddenly, Mia’s eyes widened. “Oh!” she exclaimed, pulling out her dictionary and frantically flipping through it. “I was so buried in exam prep that I totally forgot! I just shoved it in here and…” she trailed off, finding the folded note tucked between the pages.
Realising the misunderstanding, Mia said sorry to Lily. “Lily, I am so sorry!” she said sincerely, her cheeks flushing slightly. “I never meant to ignore you. It was incredibly thoughtful of you to write that.” Mia explained how busy and stressed she had been with studying. Lily, feeling a wave of relief wash over her, smiled warmly. “It’s okay,” she said. Seeing Mia’s genuine regret and reading the note’s kind words finally eased her worry. With a shared smile, they walked out of the classroom together, the awkwardness replaced by the beginning of a new friendship.

【答案】 Just then, the gentleman in front of me turned back. He said to the cashier, “I’ll pay for her order.” Before I could refuse, he had already handed his debit card to the cashier. I was speechless, my face flushed with both embarrassment and gratitude. He smiled gently and said, “Your little girl looks tired — she shouldn’t have to sit in the car for another two hours.” My throat felt tight, and I kept saying “thank you” until he told me it was no big deal. My daughter, sensing the kindness, clapped her hands happily and gave him another big smile.
The gentleman walked me to my car, helping me with my groceries. He carefully placed the heavier bags inside. I thanked him again sincerely. Before leaving, he handed me his business card. I promised to pay him back as soon as possible. As I drove home, I thought about how a small, kind act from a stranger had turned my stressful day around. It made me realize that kindness is about being willing to help someone in need. From that day on, I decided to pass on this kindness too, making someone else’s day brighter, just like the gentleman did for mine.

As Emma waited backstage, her hands shook and her heart raced. Suddenly, memories flooded in — Mia staying up late to help her practice, the proud smile when she hit high notes, and even the patient corrections. A wave of regret washed over her, but it strangely steadied her voice. When her name was called, she walked onstage, picturing Mia’s encouraging face in the crowd. To her astonishment, there Mia stood in the front row, tears glistening in her eyes. Fueled by this sight, Emma sang with newfound confidence, pouring her heart into every note.
After the impressive performance, Emma ran off the stage and rushed to Mia. “I’m so sorry,” Emma choked out, tears streaming down. Mia hugged her tightly, whispering, “I’ve always believed in you. You were perfect.” Emma pulled back, smiling through tears. “I finally understood — your critiques were gifts, not judgments. Thank you for never giving up on me.” Mia wiped Emma’s cheeks gently. “Sisters stick together, remember? Now let’s celebrate your victory!” Hand in hand, they walked toward the applause, their bond stronger than ever.

【答案】 Eventually, she decided to send her story to a publisher. It was a small, new house she’d found by chance online, with a note saying they “valued heart over hype”. Her hands trembled as she clicked “send” — this was her 12th try, and hope felt fragile. Days turned into weeks, and she forced herself to stop checking the email constantly. One afternoon, while feeding her baby, her phone buzzed. She ignored it at first, used to disappointment.
“We are delighted to inform you...”, the letter read. Jessy froze, then read it again, tears blurring her eyes. The publisher loved her protagonist’s courage and the warmth hidden in the magic. They wanted to sign her. She hugged her sleeping baby tightly, whispering, “See? Courage works.” Outside, the winter wind seemed softer, and a sliver of sunlight slipped through the window, touching the old notebook — a symbol of dreams that refused to die.

【答案】参考范文

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The following days, Mia was busy preparing for the examination, forgetting the note totally. Sad and confused, Lily wondered why her friendly act received no answer, so she decided to find out the reason.

【答案】范文

The gentleman walked me to my car, helping me with my groceries.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
