When my father was celebrating a milestone (里程碑), birthday, I pulled together a surprised gift that he would never forget.
On his 60th birthday, I had a fun idea: What if I could get the memories people had of him, put each one into an envelope (信封) — 60 in total — and have him open them, one by one, on his birthday? So I wrote an e-mail to family and friends, explaining my idea.
I sent the e-mail and waited. And then the replies started coming in and I was very, very astonished. There were so many memories, and they were all so lovely. They came from the ’50s, ’60s, ’70s, from every decade (十年) between now and the day my dad was born. They came from my mother, my siblings, my grandma, my dad’s friends from high school, his sister, my dad’s first boss, a colleague at his first job, from people who hadn’t seen my dad in 40 years, from people I myself hadn’t even informed. They typed them and hand-wrote them. They mailed them and e-mailed them.
The night before Dad’s birthday, my sister and I stayed up late, putting the mails into envelopes.
The next morning, after breakfast and presents and cake, we gave the pile of envelopes to him. “Just one more thing for you,” we said.
It took him along time to open them and read. Each one was a brief ticket to another time, a leap (跳跃) backward over years and decades. There was a lot of laughter and a few tears in his face.
I was kind of sad when the project of the memories about my father was over because it was, great fun to collect these memories.

When I was a kid, if someone told me that I would grow up to become a published author and founder of a youth literacy (读写能力)foundation, I would have laughed and kept walking. Even now when I see the title of my latest picture book, My Very Favorite Book in the Whole Wide World, I shake my head, not quite believing that book has my name on it. But the truth is, this story comes from my own personal experience.
It took me a very long time to find my personal reading voice. In Valdosta, GA, where I grew up, my community promoted two pathways to a better life for little boys like me: being an athlete and being an entertainer. I was no different than the other kids, so I did what felt natural: Play football and overlook school. School presented challenges every day and so did football practice, but overcoming physical adversity was on trend with my neighborhood’s culture. Reading books not so much.
Fortunately, I went to college. That’s where my reading struggles really appeared. Trips to the grocery store were stressful because there was so much reading involved in the simple act of buying food. I would misread labels and grab the wrong items. Once, I picked up apple sauce thinking it was apple slices. I didn’t notice my mistake until I got home and realized that it was my inability to understand the differences in the wording on the labels that caused the mistake. I realized that I needed to make an important decision. If I wanted to be a better version of me, I had to become a stronger reader
I joined a book club and read every free moment I had. My journey with reading also created a desire in me to inspire others who struggle with reading. So I started a nonprofit, Share the Magic Foundation, trying to transform the lives of children living in underserved communities through literacy.
1. How does the author feel about his new book? (No more than 10 words)
2. Why did the author ignore reading when he was a little boy? (No more than 12 words)
3. What is the 3rd paragraph mainly about? (No more than 10 words)
4. What does the underlined word “adversity” mean? (No more than 2 words)
5. What do you think of reading? And why? (No more than 25 words.)

Mum and Dad never noticed I was failing, but I don’t blame them. They had five children and a busy household. I got through primary school, but within months after starting secondary education I’d been moved into a class for “slow” kids. As far as I was concerned, that was where I belonged, but still felt ashamed.
At 14, I realized things weren’t going to get better. I’d soon leave school unqualified and unemployable. Everyone would know I was stupid. Unable to talk about that with family or friends, I ran away from home.
Life was not easy for me, but I always found a way out. If I had to meet someone, I’d repeat the street name to myself until I found a cab. I avoided situations where I’d have to sign my name. Bills were paid at the post office, in cash. If I had to fill in an application form, I’d take it into the street and ask a passer-by for help. If someone suggested a trip to the theatre, I’d find an excuse not to go.
The turning point emerged with the birth of my daughter, Henrietta. How could I expect her to thrive (茁壮成长) if I wasn’t able to help her with homework? Who would read her bedtime stories, if not me? I was 30, and couldn’t even recite the alphabet.
I took an evening course but kept it secret from my friends. Gradually, I started to gain what felt like a whole new sense. Within a year, I was able to stand in front of my classmates and deliver a speech about the works of William Blake. After that first year, I told my friends what I’d been up to. The relief was great; it’s like letting out a breath I’d been holding for years. I realized how lonely I’d always been. Finally, I was able to be myself.
Today, my confidence is real, and I feel in control of everything I do. I run a guest house, work as a photographer and am about to complete a degree in psychology and sociology.
1. Why didn’t the author’s parents notice she was failing? (No more than 10 words)
2. What would the author do if she had to fill in an application form?(No more than 8 words)

5. What do you think of learning at an older age or throughout one’s life?(No more than 20 words)

Every single person has a story to share, and a growing number of older Australians are choosing to record their life memories as short films. While writing memoirs can take years, creating a life story film takes just a few hours — and the resulting films are far more vivid than writing or looking through photo albums.
Television producer and director Danika Armytage, known for producing shows like The Block, River Cottage Australia, Travel Guides, and The Living Room, has launched a company called Big Stories Little Films, which specialises in creating life legacy films. Since its inception in 2024, Danika has been busy bringing people’s stories to life in film.
“Our films tell life stories, capture family ancestry, and allow wisdom to be passed between generations,” Danika explains. “They are often a gift between family members — either ordered as a birthday present from the kids, or as a film gifted from the grandparents to their grandkids — it’s like a film heirloom (传家宝) to pass between generations.”
Danika was inspired to start the company after filming an interview with her own grandmother, Halimah, before she passed away. “The film became priceless to my family, especially after Granny died. Now my own children can meet their great-grandmother and feel connected to our family history, even though they never met her in person. Memories fade, but films are a time capsule that safeguards stories, keeping them as vivid as if you’re sitting at the kitchen bench hearing them directly from your grandparent.”
“One of my favourite films was about brother and sister Raymond and Jennice Kersh, now in their 80s, who ran the iconic Sydney restaurant Edna’s Table and were pioneers in serving indigenous ingredients in the Sydney restaurant scene. Their story is inspiring, and their recollections of growing up in Pyrmont in the 1940s, a suburb where everyone was poor but no one was lonel’ are a perfect example of how these films capture living history.”
These life legacy films have become more than just memory carriers — they bridge time, letting younger generations touch the past through elders’ voices and smiles. For families, they’re irreplaceable heirlooms; for society, they’re fragments of living history. As more older Australians embrace this way, countless unique stories are being saved from fading, turning personal moments into lasting family and cultural treasures.
1. Compared with writing memoirs, what are the advantages of creating life story films?(No more than 10 words)
2. What does the underlined word “inception” mean?(No more than 1 word)
3. Why did Danika’s film about her grandmother become priceless to her family?(No more than 15 words)
4. What makes Raymond and Jennice Kersh’s story a “perfect example of living history”?(No more than 25 words)
5. Which is more vivid to you for preserving memories: photos, writing or short films? Why?(No more than 20 words)

Pearl Moss looked out her front window in Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. She was instantly worried. A major snowstorm over the weekend had dropped nearby a foot of snow in her driveway, and there was more on the way. She was recovering from shoulder surgery and didn’t have family members nearby who could help to dig her out.
A few hours later, there was a knock on her door. Moss looked out and was surprised to see two teenage boys with shovels (铁铲). David Shelpman and Aidan Campbell live in the same neighborhood as Moss and are on the football team at Bethel Park High School. Head Coach Brian DeLallo had emailed his team members on Sunday to inform them that their Monday’s workout in the school gym wasn’t going to happen. DeLallo also posted a notice on Twitter with some instructions: “Due to expected severe weather, Monday’s weightlifting workout has been canceled.” he wrote. “Find an elderly or disabled neighbor and shovel their driveway. Don’t accept any money — that’s our Monday workout.” Shelpman and about 40 other team members took their assignment seriously.
Helping elderly and disabled residents to dig out after snowstorms is a Bethel Park tradition that goes back two decades. In Bethel Park, community support of the football team is strong. “Our games are always well attended, so giving back is the right response,” DeLallo said.
Pearl Moss said she’s indebted to the teens, adding that if they hadn’t shown up, she probably would have been caught in her house for a while.

When Alex was 15, a climbing accident resulted in the loss of his right leg. For a lively and athletic teenager, this was a devastating blow. In the months that followed, he fell into deep depression, convinced that his dreams and joys had ended.
One day, his physical therapist placed a pair of swimming goggles (护目镜) in his hand. “The water doesn’t care how many legs you have,” she said. Reluctantly, Alex started spending time in the pool. At first, it was frustrating. His body was unbalanced, and moving through the water was a struggle. But he persisted. The water, as his therapist promised, provided a sense of freedom he hadn’t felt since his accident. He could move without the aid of his crutches.
Months of practice turned into years. Alex didn’t just learn to swim; he learned to swim with incredible speed and grace. He focused on the power of his upper body and the technique of his kick with his left leg. He turned his perceived weakness into a unique strength. His coach, recognizing his talent and determination, encouraged him to compete.
At the age of 20, Alex qualified for the national Paralympic swimming team. Standing on the starting block, he looked at the pool not as a place of past struggle, but as a field of victory. He won a silver medal that day. When asked by a reporter what his achievement meant, he said, “The accident took my leg, but it couldn’t take my spirit. This medal isn’t about proving something to the world; it’s about reminding myself that I can overcome any obstacle with a strong will.”
1. Why did Alex think his dreams and joys had ended? (No more than 10 words)
2. How did the physical therapist help Alex? (No more than 20 words)
3. What does the word “perceived” (Paragraph 3) most probably mean? (Only one word)

My brother Joe had a passion for driving cars. Fords in particular. He was especially fond of speed. It was enough to make my mother fear that he was crazy. But she had that fear about everyone, even herself.
When Joe was just a little boy, he would often say to me, “Sister, when I am old enough to get my license and drive my own car, I will fly so fast that angels will run scared.” With a big grin (咧嘴笑), he would imagine the scene. I could have told him it would never happen. But I didn’t tell him that.
Joe was born blind — he couldn’t see his own face in a mirror. But his trouble didn’t end with his eyes, his legs also gave him challenges. He suffered from disabilities and could not walk until he was five. But he could dream like anyone. I didn’t want to be the one to dim (使暗淡) Joe’s dreams. Life would do that for him, soon enough. Until then, didn’t he deserve his happiness?
Growing up is a tug of war between disappointment and surprise, between dreams and reality. By the time Joe was 12, I think he knew he would never get a license. As with the other hard facts of life, he seemed to accept it without question or bitterness, as if it were nothing more than a card drawn at random.
One hot summer day when he was 16, Joe went tapping out the driveway with his stick, finding his way to my stepfather’s 49 Ford. He ran his hand along the car, felt the heat of the metal, opened the door and climbed in.
He looked good.
Under the seat, he discovered a six-pack of Budweiser. And he drank all six cans. He felt inside the car, found the keys, shouted, “Hooweece!” and fired it up.
I have heard various versions of this story. They all boil down to this: the Ford’s engine roared. My mother fainted (昏厥). My stepfather rushed outside.
And my brother, after a moment of pure joy, threw up all over the car. Fortunately, for everyone, the Ford didn’t move an inch. But to this day, Joe still swears that when he found those keys and fired that old engine up, he definitely heard the angels starting to flee.
1. What did Joe imagine when he was a little boy about driving his own car? (no more than 10 words)
2. Why didn’t the author tell Joe he might never get a driver’s license? (no more than 10 words)
3. What does the underlined phrase mean in the paragraph 4? (no more than 5 words)
4. What did Joe do after he went into his stepfather’s’ 49 Ford? (no more than 15 words)
5. How would the story inspire you in life? Put it in your own words. (no more than 25 words)

I lived in a big family in Johannesburg. I learned early in life how important the family was. Whatever each family member’s condition is, we are bound together by blood and love.
When I was a kid, we often paid a visit to our relatives, especially my uncle who lived in Ellis Park. He was seriously affected by a disease and lived an hour away on the other side of Johannesburg — the “not so nice” part of the town. On our way to Ellis Park, my mom usually bought some drugs for my uncle and some meals for the gathering.
Each time we entered Ellis Park, I would be surprised by the scene outside the car window. Poorly-dressed and dirty children played in the messy yards that were dotted with broken bicycles, toys and other junk. On the verandahs (走廊) were some men wearing dirty shirts with unshaven faces.
When we reached my uncle’s house, we would often find him sitting on a chair on the verandah. He used to look at us through half-closed eyes and couldn’t recognize us because he had lost consciousness due to his illness.
My mom would walk toward him and hug him, with a soft smile on her lips. The best time in my uncle’s family was at night when all the family members gathered together to enjoy the meals brought by my mother. The meals were delicious. But the greatest thing was that we chatted together, laughed together and cared about each other.
Years later, my uncle recuperated from his illness thanks to continuous treatment and care from others. He was really grateful to the people around him. And we were glad that he regained health.
Now we still often pay a visit to our family members, and so do they. I’m happy that I live in a family that is filled with love.
1. What was wrong with the author’s uncle in Ellis Park? (no more than 8 words)
2. What did Ellis Park look like? (no more than 5 words)
3. What did the author think of getting together at his uncle’s? (no more than 15 words)
4. What does the underlined word mean in paragraph 6? (no more than 1 word)
5. What do you learn from the story? Please explain in your own words. (no more than 20 words)

Growing up, I remember my father as a silent, serious man—not the sort of person around whom one could laugh. As a teenager arriving in America, knowing nothing, I wanted a father who could explain the human journey. In college, when friends called home for advice, I would sink into deep depression for what I did not have.
Today, at twenty-seven, I have come to rediscover them in ways that my teenage mind would not allow — as adults and as friends with their own faults and weaknesses.
One night after my move back home, I overheard my father on the telephone. There was some trouble. Later, Dad shared the problem with me. Apparently my legal training had earned me some privileges in his eyes. I talked through the problem with Dad, analyzing the purposes of the people involved and offering several negotiation strategies. He listened patiently before finally admitting, “I can’t think like that. I am a simple man.”
Dad is a brilliant scientist who can deconstruct the building blocks of nature. Yet human nature is a mystery to him. That night I realized that he was simply not skilled at dealing with people, much less the trouble of a conflicted teenager. It’s not in his nature to understand human desires.
And so, there it was — it was no one’s fault that my father held no interest in human lives while I placed great importance in them. We are at times born more sensitive, wide-eyed, and dreamy than our parents and become more curious and idealistic than them. Dad perhaps never expected me for a child. And I, who knew Dad as an intelligent man, had never understood that his intelligence did not cover all of my feelings.
It has saved me years of questioning and confusion. I now see my parents as people who have other relationships than just Father and Mother. I now overlook their many faults and weaknesses, which once annoyed me.
I now know my parents as friends: people who ask me for advice; people who need my support and understanding. And I’ve come to see my past clearer.
1. How did the author view her father when she was a teenager? (no more than 8 words)
2. Why did the author’s father decide to share his problem with the author? (no more than 15 words)
3. What does the underlined word mean in the context of Paragraph 4? (1 word)
4. What conclusion did the author finally reach about the differences between her and her father? (no more than 20 words)
5. If you were the author, how would you deal with the generation gap with your parents after gaining this new insight? (no more than 25 words)

(25-26高三上·天津第一中学-11月·期中)Sita had always known that her mother was a wonderful cook. As members of a traditional Mangalorean family, they had always placed food at the heart of their home. The kitchen was her mother’s research lab. One day, Sita discovered a small, old notebook with yellowed pages there. It was filled with handwritten recipes, but what caught her attention were the notes beside each recipe — small stories, experiences and names of people she didn’t recognize. This was no common recipe book.
Sita asked her mom what it was. Mom replied, “That’s my secret recipe book. It holds recipes from my mother and grandmother. Some of them are family favorites. Now that you are interested, maybe it’s time you learnt some of these.” Sita nodded happily. She decided to start with her grandmother’s famous Mangalore cakes, a dish often served at family reunions
As she collected the ingredients (食材), Sita read the notes beside the recipe, “This dish can bring anyone closer. It was given to me by my dear friend Janaki. We made it not only during celebrations, but also in moments when we needed comfort.”
“This seems like more than just a recipe,” Sita said with wonder. Her mother explained smilingly, “Every dish tells a story, Sita. Your grandmother got this recipe from her childhood friend, Janaki. She had brought these cakes as a gift when your grandmother delivered me. Later, your grandmother made them for me when you were born. We have also had them at many family reunions. These cakes are part of our story.”
As Sita carefully followed the recipe, she thought about her grandmother, her childhood friend, and the birth of children in their home. When the cakes were ready, the sweet smell filled the kitchen and for the first time, Sita felt connected to her family in a way she hadn’t before. She felt happy that she had made a dish that carried so much history. It wasn’t just about the ingredients; it was about the love, care and memories that had been passed down.

2. What’s the main idea of paragraphs 3&4? (no more than 15 words)

Alice Moore is a teenager entrepreneur (创业者), who in May 2015 set up her business AilieCandy. By the time she was 13, her company was worth millions of dollars with the invention of a super-sweet treat that could save kids’ teeth, instead of destroying them.
It all began when Moore visited a bank with her dad. On the outing, she was offered a candy bar. However, her dad reminded her that sugary treats were bad for her teeth. But Moore was sick of missing out on candies. So she desired to get round the warning, “Why can’t I make a healthy candy that’s good for my teeth so that my parents can’t say no to it?” With that in mind, Moore asked her dad if she could start her own candy company. He recommended that she do some research and talk to dentists about what a healthier candy would contain.
With her dad’s permission, she spent the next two years researching online and conducting trials to get a recipe that was both tasty and tooth-friendly. She also approached dentists to learn more about teeth cleaning. Consequently, she succeeded in making a kind of candy only using natural sweeteners, which can reduce oral bacteria.
Moore then used her savings to get her business off the ground. Afterwards, she and her father secured their first business meeting with a supermarket owner, who finally agreed to sell Moore’s product — CanCandy.
As CanCandy’s success grows, so does Moore’s credibility as a young entrepreneur. Moore is enthusiastic about the candy she created, and she’s also positive about what the future might bring. She hopes that every kid can have a clean mouth and a broad smile.
Meanwhile, with her parents’ help, Moore is generally able to live a normal teenage life. Although she founded her company early on in life, she wasn’t driven primarily by profit. Moore wants to use her unique talent to help others find their smiles. She donates 10% of AilicCandy’s profits to Big Smiles. With her talent and determination, it appears that the sky could be the limit for Alice Moore.

Being good at something and having a passion for it are not enough. Success depends fundamentally on our view of ourselves and of the events in our lives.
When twelve-year-old John Wilson walked into his chemistry class on a rainy day in 1931, he had no way of knowing that his life was to change completely. The class experiment that day was to show how heating a container of water would bring air bubbling (冒泡) to the surface. Somehow, the container the teacher gave Wilson to heat mistakenly held something more volatile (易挥发的) than water. When Wilson heated it, the container exploded, leaving Wilson blinded in both eyes.
When Wilson returned home from hospital two months later, his parents attempted to find a way to deal with the catastrophe that had happened to their lives. But Wilson did not regard the accident as catastrophic. He learned braille (盲文) quickly and continued his education at Gloucester College for the Blind. There, he not only did well as a student but also became a (n) accomplished public speaker.
Later, he worked in Africa, where many people suffered from blindness for lack of proper treatment. For him, it was one thing to accept his own fate of being blind and quite another to allow something to continue when it could be fixed so easily. This moved him to action. And tens of millions in Africa and Asia can see because of the commitment Wilson made to preventing the preventable.
Wilson received several international awards for his great contributions. He lost his sight but found vision. He proved that it’s not what happens to us that determines our lives-it’s what we make of what happens.
1. What happened to John Wilson in a chemistry class on a rainy day in 1931? (no more than 10 words)
2. What did he do facing the disaster? (10 words)
3. How would you describe Wilson in terms of personalities according to Paragraph 3&4? (no more than 10 words)
4. How do you understand the underlined sentence in the last paragraph? (no more than 10 words)
5. How does Wilson’s story inspire you? Please explain in your own words. (no more than 20 words)

1. He couldn’t believe he could write that book./
He feels it incredible to write a book like that. 2. Because reading was not much on trend with his neighbour’s culture./
Because reading was not regarded as a pathway to a better life. 3. How the author realized the importance of reading./
What made the author decide to become a stronger reader./
Why the author decided to become a stronger reader. 4. Difficulty./Hardship./Challenge. 5. Reading is very important to everyone.Because reading is regarded as a pathway to a better life.

4. How did the author feel after she told her friends the truth?(No more than 6 words)
5. What do you think of learning at an older age or throughout one’s life?(No more than 20 words)
1. Because they had a big family and were very busy. 2. She would ask a passer-by for help. 3. Appeared. 4. She was greatly relaxed. 5. We need to learn no matter how old we are and it’s never too late to start.

1. It’s faster and more vivid. 2. Start. 3. It lets kids meet their great-grandmother and connect to family history. 4. They were restaurant pioneers and their 1940s Pyrmont memories show living history. 5. Short films. They have voices and smiles to make memories vivid.

4. What did Alex achieve at the age of 20? (No more than 15 words)
5. What quality of Alex do you admire most? Why? (No more than 25 words)
1. Because he lost his right leg in an accident. 2. By placing swimming goggles in his hand and telling him water didn’t care how many legs he had. 3. Believed./ Considered. 4. He qualified for the national Paralympic swimming team and won a silver medal. 5. (示例1): I admire his resilience the most. Instead of giving up after a tragic accident, he found a new way to live a meaningful and successful life. This shows incredible mental strength.

1. He imagined flying/ he would fly so fast that angels would run scared. 2. She didn’t want to dim his dreams (before life did). / She wanted to protect his dream and temporary happiness. 3. An unplanned life event. / An unchosen reality in life. / Something decided by chance. / An unexpected, unavoidable life challenge. 4. He drank the beer, found the keys, started the engine, and threw up (vomited on the car). 5. I will keep my passion for my dreams despite any difficulty in my life so that I can realize them and enjoy my life. / It inspires me to cherish my passions fearlessly /embrace life’s uncertainty with joy and achieve my dream with my efforts no matter what lies in my way. / It inspires me to cherish dreams despite limitations, accept life’s setbacks calmly, and seek joy even when circumstances seem impossible.

根据第二段“When Joe was just a little boy, he would often say to me, “Sister, when I am old enough to get my license and drive my own car, I will fly so fast that angels will run scared.” (当乔还是个小男孩的时候,他常常对我说:“姐姐,等我长大拿到驾照,能自己开车的时候,我会开得飞快,连天使都会吓得跑开的。”)”可知,当乔还是个小男孩的时候,他想象着自己飞得很快,快到连天使都会害怕了。故答案为He imagined flying/ he would fly so fast that angels would run scared.
根据第三段“Joe was born blind — he couldn’t see his own face in a mirror. But his trouble didn’t end with his eyes, his legs also gave him challenges. He suffered from disabilities and could not walk until he was five. But he could dream like anyone. I didn’t want to be the one to dim She didn’t want to dim his dreams (before life did). / She wanted to protect his dream and temporary happiness.
根据划线词上文“Growing up is a tug of war between disappointment and surprise, between dreams and reality. By the time Joe was 12, I think he knew he would never get a license. An unplanned life event. / An unchosen reality in life. / Something decided by chance. / An unexpected, unavoidable life challenge.
根据倒数第三段“Under the seat, he discovered a six-pack of Budweiser. And he drank all six cans. He felt inside the car, found the keys, shouted, “Hooweece!” and fired it up. (在座位下面,他发现了一箱六罐装的百威啤酒。于是他一口气喝光了所有的六罐。他把手伸进车里,找到了钥匙,大喊一声“吼吼呵!”然后发动了车子。)”以及最后一段“And my brother, after a moment of pure joy, threw up all over the car. (而我的哥哥,在一阵纯粹的喜悦之后,在车里吐得到处都是。)”可知,乔在开上他继父的那辆49年款福特车后,他喝完了啤酒,找到了钥匙,启动了引擎,然后吐在了车里。故答案为He drank the beer, found the keys, started the engine, and threw up (vomited on the car).

1. He suffered from a serious disease./He was seriously affected by a disease. 2. It was poor and messy. 3. It was an unforgettable memory/a good time because of the love and care they showed each other. 4. Recovered. 5. I should value my family, care about them and try to connect with them regardless of their conditions because only by doing so can we overcome any difficulty in our lives.

根据第二段中“He was seriously affected by a disease and lived an hour away on the other side of Johannesburg — the “not so nice” part of the town.(他身患重病,住在约翰内斯堡的另一边——城里“不太好”的地方,一个小时车程的地方)”可知,作者住在Ellis公园的叔叔身患重病,或者说,他深受疾病的影响。 He suffered from a serious disease./He was seriously affected by a disease.
根据第三段中“Poorly-dressed and dirty children played in the messy yards that were dotted with broken bicycles, toys and other junk. On the verandahs (走廊) were some men wearing dirty shirts with unshaven faces. (衣衫褴褛、脏兮兮的孩子们在凌乱的院子里玩耍,院子里散落着破碎的自行车、玩具和其他垃圾。走廊上站着一些人,他们穿着脏衬衫,脸上没有刮胡子)”可知,Ellis公园看起来贫穷又混乱。故答案为It was poor and messy.
根据第五段中“The best time in my uncle’s family was at night when all the family members gathered together to enjoy the meals brought by my mother. The meals were delicious. But the greatest thing was that we chatted together, laughed together and cared about each other. (我叔叔家最美好的时光是在晚上,所有的家庭成员聚在一起享受我妈妈带来的饭菜。饭菜很好吃。但最重要的是我们在一起聊天,一起笑,互相关心)”可知,对作者而言,在叔叔家相聚是一段难忘的回忆/一段美好的时光,因为一家人互相关爱。故答案为It was an unforgettable memory/a good time because of the love and care they showed each other.
根据画线词的下文“thanks to continuous treatment and care from others. He was really grateful to the people around him. And we were glad that he regained health. (得益于大家一直以来的治疗和关怀。他真的很感激身边的人。我们很高兴他恢复了健康)”可知,由于治疗和关怀,作者的叔叔后来恢复了健康,划线词意思应该是“恢复”,与recovered“恢复,康复”意思一致。故答案为Recovered.
(5)题解析:
开放性试题。本题结合短文内容,言之有理即可。例如,根据第一段中“I learned early in life how important the family was. Whatever each family member’s condition is, we are bound together by blood and love. (我很小就知道家庭是多么重要。无论每个家庭成员的情况如何,我们都是由血缘和爱联系在一起的)”、第五段中“But the greatest thing was that we chatted together, laughed together and cared about each other. (但最重要的是我们在一起聊天,一起笑,互相关心)”和第六段中“And we were glad that he regained health. (我们很高兴他恢复了健康)”可知,作者回忆了一家人探访患病叔叔的经历,凸显了家人之间的相互关爱,血缘之间的紧密相连,作者为叔叔最终康复感到开心。由此可知,从故事中可以学到:不管他们情况如何,“我”应该珍惜“我”的家人,关心他们,并努力与他们建立连接,因为只有这样“我”们才能克服生活中的任何困难。故答案可为I should value my family, care about them and try to connect with them regardless of their conditions because only by doing so can we overcome any difficulty in our lives.

1. Silent, serious and unhelpful. 2. Because he thought her legal training made her privileged. 3. Analyze. 4. Their differences result from different natures, not anyone’s fault. 5. I’d communicate more, understand their weaknesses and support each other as friends.
