Passage 1
A young woman one day said something that hurt her best friend of many years. She regretted it immediately and would like to do anything to take the words back. What she had said hurt her friend so much that the woman herself also felt very painful. To make up what she had done, she went to an old wise man in the village and asked for advice.
The old man understood the young woman’s suffering. He knew he must help her. He knew he could never remove her pain, but he could teach. And he also knew the result would depend only on her character.
“Tonight, take your best feather pillows and put a single feather on the doorstep of each house in the village before the sun rises,” he said.
The young woman hurried home to prepare for it, even though the feather pillows were very dear to her. All night long, she made her efforts alone in the cold. Finally it got light and she placed the last feather on the step of the last house. Just as the sun rose, she returned to the old man.
“Now,” said the man, “go back and refill your pillows with the feathers you have put on the steps. Then everything will be as it was before.”
“You know that’s impossible! The wind blew away each feather as fast as I placed them on the doorsteps!” The young woman was surprised.
“That’s true,” said the old man. “Each of your words is like a feather in the wind. Once your words are spoken, no matter how much effort you make and how sincere you are, you can never return them to your mouth. Choose your words well and protect people you love from being hurt.”

Passage 2
My mother was born in Aspen, Colorado, a mining (矿业) town then. Until she was ten, Aspen was a busy mining town. The largest mines were still operating. Her class at school was very large. The streets were busy with horses and horse-drawn wagons (四轮马车). There were few cars. Locals traveled, even to Glenwood, by train. Her father, with his brother, operated one of Aspen’s stores.
Unluckily, the 1918 influenza (流行性感冒) struck, killing many young men including her father and uncle. Aspen’s major mines shut down. Only a few small mines operated. Many long-time locals left; many businesses, including her father’s store, closed; her class became small.
Life returned to normal in her teens and early twenties. Her social circle became the center of her life. Cars were common, and that enabled them to see the world beyond Aspen. They made weekend trips to Ashcroft, climbing the Elk Mountain. They made trips to Glenwood to swim.
Upon high school graduation, my mother went to work to help support her mother and sisters and brothers. She worked at Kobey’s, a clothing store in the Hyman Mall. Meanwhile, she didn’t give up her love for music and dance. She joined two different dance bands and often played the piano.
In her 30’s, Aspen decided to break away from mining and started to focus on promoting itself as a ski destination to develop its economy. Therefore, my mother’s generation was encouraged to learn to ski. Like other members of the newly formed Aspen Ski Club, she was taught to ski by André Roch, the founder of the Aspen Ski Club. She then went on ski trips, including climbing and skiing down the challenging Hayden Peak.

Passage 3
My journey home from school is nothing special. The train is always busy but I usually find a seat and start reading or texting my friends, making sure, like everyone else, not to look at other people.
But last Tuesday was different. I was happily listening to some new music when the train suddenly stopped. This wasn’t unusual and I didn’t think anything of it. Then after about five minutes, I noticed people were starting to get a bit angry. Fifteen minutes later, people started getting angrier. The longer the train stood still, the angrier people became until finally the announcement came: “We are sorry to announce that this train is delayed (延误). ”
That seemed to calm people down and so we all went back to what we were doing before, but soon there was another announcement: “It will be a long time before we get there — a train had broken down in front of us.” There was a large sigh throughout the carriage (车厢) but then something unexpected happened: complete strangers started talking to each other. I started chatting to a couple of young tourists. They were from Spain and they were travelling around the UK so I suggested some places they should visit. Next I really surprised myself by starting a conversation with a businesswoman. She was going to take three months to climb Qomolangma. It was great talking to her. Then I decided to get up and go for a walk down the train. I met a woman who had been a student at my school seven years before and knew lots of my teachers.
While we were talking, we heard there was a patient in another part of the train who needed help and the woman from my school jumped into action. It turned out she was a nurse and when she came back, she was welcomed as a hero.
Then, after two hours, we started moving again. Everyone clapped and cheered and some people, complete strangers three hours before, even hugged. I will never forget the day the train stopped and people started talking.

Passage 5
On the first night of the new moon, I stand beneath an inky expanse of sky at a Northern California campsite. The darkness is so profound that my outstretched hand vanishes before my eyes. It’s not just an absence of light I’m experiencing: the darkness feels tangible, with a weight and texture of its own.
The most well-known benefit of the darkness is the role it plays in releasing melatonin (褪黑素). This critical hormone doesn’t just help us sleep, but can also reduce DNA damage by boosting the body’s own genetic repair machinery. Evidence also reveals that the magic we feel in the darkness is closely associated with better mental health.
My own fascination with the dark began in October of 2022, when I found myself floating in a raft (木筏) in the Arctic Sea. Our expedition guide had motored our rubber raft away from the artificial lights of our larger ship, turned the outer engine off, and instructed us to be silent. My shipmates and I looked up into the enormous night sky as stars moved in the black space above. The darkness was so dense that I couldn’t tell up from down, or where the night sky ended, and the inky sea began.
I felt a surge of positive feelings flowing through me as I gazed at the stars on that dark Arctic night.
The experience changed my relationship to darkness. As someone who’d always enjoyed the idea of going to bed early to get a good night’s sleep, I decided to turn off artificial lights and electronic devices earlier in the evening. I also began wondering what “dose” of dark each night was ideal for my health.
Artists, poets and songwriters have long understood our fear of the dark as well as the comfort it can bring us. For me, it’s the Simon & Garfunkel hit song, The Sound of Silence — which starts off with the line “Hello darkness, my old friend” — that captures the essence of why escaping the light is necessary at times. It reminds us that some of our most profound moments of healing and insight happen in the dark.
1.Which of the following statements about darkness is NOT TRUE?
A.It can better our sleep quality. B.It can improve our mental health.
C.It can protect us from DNA damage. D.It can change our damaged genes.
2.What does the Arctic experience show about the author?
A.He initially feared total darkness. B.He discovered a new scientific phenomenon.
C.He regretted joining the expedition. D.His perception of darkness shifted greatly.
3.What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.We should escape the light all the time.
B.Artists, poets and songwriters fear darkness.
C.Darkness brings some beautiful moments to us.
D.The Sound of Silence captures the essence of light.
4.Which can be the best title of the passage?
A.My Arctic Adventure: A Night Under the Stars.
B.Beyond Fear: The Unseen Benefits of Darkness.
C.Art and Science: How Darkness Heals Us.
D.Melatonin: Nature’s Repair Mechanism.
【答案】1.D 2.D 3.C 4.B
【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。这篇文章主要讲述了作者在北极海上的黑暗夜晚中,对黑暗的新认识和感受。
1.细节理解题。根据第二段“This critical hormone doesn’t just help us sleep, but can also reduce DNA damage by boosting the body’s own genetic repair machinery. (这种关键的激素不仅能帮助我们入睡,还能通过增强人体自身的基因修复机制来减少 DNA 损伤。)”可知,黑暗有助于睡眠,并能通过增强身体自身的基因修复机制来减少DNA损伤。根据第二段“Evidence also reveals that the magic we feel in the darkness is closely associated with better mental health.( 研究结果还表明,在黑暗中所产生的那种神奇的感觉与良好的心理健康状况有着密切的关联。)”可知,黑暗与更好的心理健康有关。而D项“It can change our damaged genes.(它可以改变我们受损的基因)”未提及;因此D项说法不正确。故选D项。
2.推理判断题。根据第五段“The experience changed my relationship to darkness.( 这段经历改变了我对黑暗的看法。)”可知,这次北极的经历极大地改变了作者对黑暗的看法和感受。以及本段中“As someone who’d always enjoyed the idea of going to bed early to get a good night’s sleep, I decided to turn off artificial lights and electronic devices earlier in the evening. I also began wondering what “dose” of dark each night was ideal for my health.( 作为一个一直喜欢早睡以获得充足睡眠的人,我决定在晚上更早的时候关掉人造灯光和电子设备。同时,我也开始思考每晚适宜的黑暗程度对我的健康究竟有多重要。)”可知,作者之前可能也重视睡眠,但这次经历让他更加关注黑暗本身对健康的作用,从而主动减少夜间人造光源的使用,并思考理想的黑暗“剂量”。这表明他对黑暗的感知发生了巨大的转变。故选D项。
3.推理判断题。根据最后一段“Artists, poets and songwriters have long understood our fear of the dark as well as the comfort it can bring us. (艺术家、诗人和词曲作者们早就深知我们对黑暗的恐惧,以及它能给我们带来的慰藉。)”可知,黑暗既能带来恐惧也能带来慰藉。再根据该段最后一句“It reminds us that some of our most profound moments of healing and insight happen in the dark.( 这让我们明白,我们那些最为深刻的成长与顿悟时刻往往发生在黑暗之中。)”
B“Beyond Fear: The Unseen Benefits of Darkness(超越恐惧:黑暗的无形益处)”最全面、最准确地概括了文章主旨。故选B项。

Even small amounts could cause diseases and affect learning abilities. Therefore, Jaden wanted to do something to help the kids in Flint.

Passage 7
As a freelance (自由职业的) writer, the structure of my workday can often vary wildly. Sometimes, it feels as if I have too much to do — other days, too little. Yet no matter the shape of my 9 to 5, one thing remains constant: emails.
About a year ago, I found my email-checking habit had become more distracting (分心的) than usual. When working on my computer, I found myself nervously checking my phone for unread emails whenever hitting a mental block. Even worse, during lunch or walks, that habit of checking would come with me, making my breaks an extension of the workday.
The little red dot on my Gmail app had become a marker of my professional image: the more unread emails, the more I felt I was failing. By quickly responding to everyone, I convinced myself I was seen as reliable by my paymasters and therefore worthy of the work I needed to pay my electricity bills, so I could charge my phone, read my emails and carry on the endless cycle.
However, speed doesn’t always mean quality. I was always contactable — but at what cost? I took on too much work, not allowing myself space to reflect on the value of my work. The content machine kept running and I was busy, producing “word salad” onto the internet. Something needed to change. After a particularly crazy week of nonstop emailing, I deleted the email app.
The difference was immediately noticeable. I began to rest better. Now, my workdays remain unpredictable, but I’ve realised that a lack of structure needn’t stop me setting boundaries (边界) for myself. Uninterrupted breaks help me focus when I get back to work. Taking a few hours to respond to messages — instead of just minutes — often makes no difference to the sender and allows me to digest the content properly.
I am still surviving as a freelancer in a fast-paced industry, but now I can spend my time endlessly checking my phone for Instagram stories instead.
1.How did the email-checking habit affect the author?
A.It caused him mental disorder. B.It made his breaks less relaxing.
C.It kept him extremely impatient. D.It changed the structure of his workday.
2.Why did the author feel the need to respond to emails quickly?
A.He wanted to avoid long working hours.
B.He sought high pay to cover electricity bills.
C.He desired to maintain a professional image.
D.He believed multitasking ensured employment.
3.What does the author imply by mentioning “word salad” in paragraph 4?
A.He was far from productive. B.He valued quality over quantity.
C.His work was creative and tasteful. D.His work lacked meaningful content.
4.What does the author learn after deleting the email app?
A.Email senders prefer thoughtful replies.
B.Social media is more important than email.
C.Setting boundaries can improve work efficiency.
D.Freelancers should get used to a fast-paced lifestyle.
【答案】1.B 2.C 3.D 4.C

Passage 8
Even at 80, Mei Jingtian still patrols (巡逻) the Shixiaguan part of the Great Wall. With over40 years of experience, he taps the overgrown ground with a wooden stick, warning wild animals for safety.
He lives in Shixia village near the 8.6-kilometer part. Shixia villagers have a deep love for the wall. Mei remembers when he ran and played hide-and-seek with his friends on the large building as a child. However, in 1979, when he returned to Shixia after working outside for years, he was shocked by the terrible situation of the old wall. “Some villagers even took stones from it to build their houses,” Mei says. To protect the wonder, Mei volunteered as a guardian (守护者), patrolling 20 kilometers daily, preventing people from taking stones, writing on the wall or dropping litter.
In 1984, a Great Wall protection program started. With Mei’s effort, the situation gradually picked up. Realizing the importance of protection, more and more villagers returned the stones they had taken and joined Mei on patrol. In 2006, as village head, Mei set up a volunteer protection organisation, and about 80 of 100 villagers joined as guardians. Passage 9
How fast can someone climb 15 meters — the height of a five-story building? The answer from Chinese speed climber Cao Long is 4.98 seconds.
The 23-year-old is the third person to have completed the speed climbing route — a l5-meter-tall wall with foot and hand holds — within 5 seconds. The other two are Indonesian athletes Kiromal Katibin and Veddrig Leonardo. People have given Cao many nicknames, such as “fastest man in China” and “Chinese Spider-Man”.
According to Cao, the result of speed climbing can differ every time due to its highly demanding and stressful nature. In this race, two climbers compete at the same time, and since it’s a sport that finishes within seconds, achieving success requires perfection. Athletes must have the right balance of focus, confidence and courage to take risks.
“Keeping a level head is the key,” Cao said. “Everyone wants to win. But the more you want it, the more likely you’ll mess up. Being too calm and trying to avoid any mistakes won’t do you any good either because that mindset takes away your advantages and your willingness to fight.” Cao went on to note, “You just have to find the right balance.” But this pressure, in fact, is part of the reason why Cao loves the sport.
Cao took his first step into the world of climbing at the age of 8. Like many kids starting out, he mainly focused on bouldering (抱石岩) and lead climbing (先锋攀岩), doing well in both. Unfortunately, at the age of 18, Cao had surgery after injuring his left arm in a competition. It was after that surgery that Cao decided to give speed climbing a try because it requires different techniques from bouldering and lead climbing and puts less pressure on his previously injured body parts.
It turned out that Cao was great at speed climbing as well, even though he thinks he is hardly the strongest athlete. In his eyes, setting a national record of 4.98 seconds has already become a thing of the past. “I will continue to work hard and climb my way to the top.” said Cao.
1.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Cao focused on bouldering and lead climbing at the age of 18.
B.Cao is nicknamed ”fastest man in China” for creating a world record.
C.Cao thinks speed climbing can be influenced by the tough natural environment.
D.Cao is the first person in China to finish the speed climbing 15-meter-tall route within 5 seconds.
2.What does “keep a level head” mean in paragraph 4?
A.Expect to win. B.Keep body balance. C.Keep the head up. D.Stay calm.
3.Why did Cao choose speed climbing?
A.Speed climbing affects his body less.
B.He did much better in speed climbing.
C.He thought speed climbing was more attractive.
D.It requires similar techniques used in bouldering and lead climbing.
4.Which of the following can best describe Cao?
A.Outgoing and confident. B.Brave and creative.
C.Determined and strong-minded. D.Modest and curious.
【答案】1.D 2.D 3.A 4.C

Passage 10
I was sitting in my high school classroom, nervously tapping my pencil against the desk as I awaited the start of the English exam.
As the clock struck, signaling the beginning of the exam, my heart began to race. I opened the exam booklet and scanned the questions, and I felt a wave of panic over me. The questions seemed foreign, and the topics unfamiliar. In a state of panic, I hurriedly wrote down my answers, hoping that somehow, by some stroke of luck, they would be correct. But as the minutes went by, I realized I couldn’t seem to make sense of the questions before me. As the final bell rang, I handed in my paper with a heavy heart.
In the days that followed, I couldn’t shake the feeling of failure that hung over me like a dark cloud. I replayed the exam over and over in my mind, analyzing every question, every answer, searching for clues as to where I had gone wrong.

Passage 11
A common claim states that a sheet of paper cannot be folded in half more than seven times. But is this true?
In 2002, Britney Gallivan, then a junior in high school in Pomona, California, folded a single piece of paper in half 12 times. She currently holds the Guinness World Record for the most times to fold a sheet of paper in half.
The prompt that led Gallivan to accomplish this was an extra-credit challenge in math class to fold anything in half 12 times. Her teacher asked the students to fold something thicker: a piece of paper.
Gallivan said “it was very frustrating, as I had many unsuccessful attempts at trying to fold different papers in half. I began to question if folding paper in half more than eight times could be impossible.” However, Gallivan recalled. “I knew I needed to understand what was limiting the folding progression.”
The equations (方程式) that Gallivan came up with calculated how many times a sheet of paper could be folded. She found that in order to fold many times, a long thin sheet is needed — the more a sheet is folded, the thicker the resulting stack becomes, and once the stack becomes thicker than it is long, there is nothing left to fold. She ultimately set her record with a sheet of tissue paper she found online that was 4,000 feet (1,219 meters) — more than three-quarters of a mile, or over a kilometer long, Guinness World Records noted.
“Working on the problem took a tremendous amount of time and effort,” Gallivan said. “As frustrating as it was at times, I learned an immense amount from the experience, which has been valuable to me throughout my life in more capacities than one would expect.”
Since Gallivan set her record, others have made claims of folding a sheet of paper more than 12 times. Still, “I anticipate that my current record will be surpassed,” Gallivan said.
1.What prompts Gallivan to accept the challenge?
A.Peer pressure.
B.Mathematics anxiety.
C.Academic requirement.
D.Guinness World Records.
2.Under what circumstances is it impossible to fold a paper in half more times?
A.The stack is as thick as it’s long.
B.The paper is neither long nor thin.
C.The stack is thicker than it’s long.
D.The paper is longer than it’s thick.
3.What can we learn about Gallivan’s attempts?
A.It’s risky.
B.It’s fruitless.
C.It’s meaningless.
D.It’s energy-consuming.
4.What can we infer from the passage?
A.Gallivan’s record is impossible to break.
B.Folding paper in half is merely a math problem.
C.Folding things in half may not be limited to 12.
D.Folding paper 12 times is a required credit in high schools.
【答案】1.C 2.C 3.D 4.C

Her teacher asked the students to fold something thicker: a piece of paper.(促使Gallivan完成这一任务的是数学课上的一个额外学分挑战,将任何东西对折12次。她的老师让学生们折叠一些更厚的东西:一张纸)”可知,促使Gallivan接受折纸挑战的是学术上的需要。故选C。
2.细节理解题。根据第五段中“She found that in order to fold many times, a long thin sheet is needed — the more a sheet is folded, the thicker the resulting stack becomes, and once the stack becomes thicker than it is long, there is nothing left to fold.(她发现,为了折叠多次,需要一张又长又薄的纸——一张纸被折叠的次数越多,叠起来的纸就越厚,一旦叠起来的纸厚超过了它的长度,就没有东西可以折叠了)”可知,一旦叠起来的纸厚度超过了它的长度就无法再折叠。故选C。
3.细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中“‘Working on the problem took a tremendous amount of time and effort,’ Gallivan said.(‘解决这个问题花费了大量的时间和精力,’Gallivan说)”可知,Gallivan的叠纸尝试非常耗费精力。故选D。
4.推理判断题。根据最后一段“Since Gallivan set her record, others have made claims of folding a sheet of paper more than 12 times. Still, ‘I anticipate that my current record will be surpassed,’ Gallivan said.(自从Gallivan创造了她的记录,其他人声称折叠一张纸超过12次。不过,‘我预计我目前的纪录将被超越,’Gallivan说)”可知,Gallivan叠纸12次的记录可能被超越。由此推知,将东西对半折叠可能不限于12次。故选C。
Passage 12
A mother of nine who started medical school when her youngest child was 4 years old graduated with her degree and planned to be a neurosurgeon.
Sarah Merrill, now 41, said her journey to medical school began at 17. She then met her husband and got married. Merrill first thought about going to school part-time to get a degree, but later she decided to follow her dream of attending medical school. Certainly, it was a challenge. Speaking of her successfully returning to university, Merrill owed it to her family largely. “When I was accepted by Mayo Clinic Ali x School of Medicine, we moved from Pennsylvania to Arizona,” said Merrill, who is moving to Indiana with her family to begin her residency (实习期) in neurosurgery. “In fact, they volunteered these movements. I know it was tough for all of us.”
Merrill and her children often have “homework parties” where they study for their own courses. Merrill’s choice has given a kind of stimulus to her children. Merrill felt touched knowing her 11-year-old daughter wants to become a surgeon and overhearing her son tell his friends his mom’s going to be a cool brain surgeon, though he doesn’t understand that really.
Merrill’s next step into a neurosurgery residency will take her into a male-dominated field where only 5% of board-certified neurosurgeons are women. Dr. Michele Halyard at Mayo Clinic Ali x School of Medicine said Merrill was known as a focused student. Halyard said, “If you can deal with nine children patiently, the residency should be a piece of cake because no amount of stress will make you fail.”
Merrill had considered choosing a more family-friendly career, but, again, she chose to follow her original dream. It’s the same advice she would give to all. “Set the goal which you’re really enthusiastic about, and it helps to think small. If you know what your interest is, focus on the next step. Then you’ll get where you want to go.”
1.Why does Merrill mention their house moving?
A.To stress the support of her family. B.To show her determination to be a doctor.
C.To reflect difficulties in attending college. D.To describe the process of pursuing her dream.
2.What does the underlined word “stimulus” mean in Paragraph 3?
A.Comfort. B.Development. C.Choice. D.Inspiration.
3.What do Halyard’s words in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Merrill can make it in the residency. B.Merrill will have more stress to handle.
C.Being mom ensures Merrill a better doctor. D.Staying focused and sensible is key to success.
4.What does Merrill mainly suggest in the last paragraph?
A.Starting with small things. B.Being true to your passion.
C.Choosing a family-friendly career. D.Having the courage to dream big.
【答案】1.A 2.D 3.A 4.B
根据第二段的“Sarah Merrill, now 41, said her journey to medical school began at 17. She then met her husband and got married. Merrill first thought about going to school part-time to get a degree, but later she decided to follow her dream of attending medical school. Certainly, it was a challenge. I know it was tough for all of us.”(现年41岁的Sarah Merrill说,她的医学院之旅始于17岁。 故选A。
2.词句猜测题。根据画线词后文“Merrill felt touched knowing her 11-year-old daughter wants to become a surgeon and overhearing her son tell his friends his mom’s going to be a cool brain surgeon, though he doesn’t understand that really.(梅里尔得知她11岁的女儿想成为一名外科医生,无意中听到她的儿子告诉他的朋友,他的妈妈将成为一名很酷的脑外科医生,尽管他不是很明白)”可知,Merrill的11岁的女儿想成为一名外科医生,她的儿子告诉朋友们他的妈妈会成为一名很酷的脑外科医生。由此推知,Merrill决定成为一名神经外科医生的选择激励了孩子们。stimulus意为“激励”,inspiration“鼓舞人心的人(或事物)”与划线词含义相近。故选D。
3.推理判断题。根据第四段中的“If you can deal with nine children patiently, the residency should be a piece of cake because no amount of stress will make you fail. (如果你能耐心地照顾9个孩子,实习应该是小菜一碟,因为再大的压力也不会让你失败)”可知,Halyard认为如果你能应对九个孩子并保持理智,那么神经外科医生的实习期应该是小菜一碟,因为即使再多的压力也不会让你失败。由此推知,梅里尔医生可以在住院医生实习期成功。故选A。
4.细节理解题。根据最后一段“Merrill had considered choosing a more family-friendly career, but, again, she chose to follow her original dream. It’s the same advice she would give to all. “Set the goal which you’re really enthusiastic about, and it helps to think small. If you know what your interest is, focus on the next step. Then you’ll get where you want to go.”(梅里尔曾考虑过选择一份对家庭更友好的职业,但她还是选择了追随自己最初的梦想。这也是她给所有人的建议。“设定一个你真正感兴趣的目标,从小处着眼会有所帮助。如果你知道你的兴趣是什么,就专注于下一步。然后你就会到达你想去的地方。”)”可知,Merrill建议遵循真正热爱的目标。故选B。
Passage 13
As a child I was one of the 125 people at our family gathering for New Year. These days we were a much smaller group in Belle Valley, Ohio. I insisted (坚持要求的) on acting as hostess and wanted to bring back the joy I’d felt at my childhood New Year that filled with love.
As family members arrived at the hall, I handed each one of them a numbered card and said, “Time for the alphabet game.” “What kind of game is that?” one of my great-grandchildren asked. “well,” I said, “who’s got number one?” A cousin raised her hand. “Tell us something you never forget,” I said. “Something that begins with the letter A.” My cousin smiled. “Apple pie!” she said. Great-granddaughter Mindy was next. “B,” she said. “I am impressed by Buckeye Country.” “Cookies!” Number 3 shouted.
Until Number 17, “The next one’s a challenge,” I said. “Who’s got 17?” Ryan, my son, slowly raised his hand. “Q,” he said. “Quaker City Carnival (嘉年华).” The room went silent.
“It’s one of the oldest traditions in Ohio,” Ryan said. “Grandma and Grandpa met there. That’s where they fell in love. That’s where this whole thing started. This whole family.” Ryan looked around the room, making eye contact with everyone. “We wouldn’t be here celebrating New Year together if it wasn’t for Quaker City Carnival.”
The room burst into laughter and was full of the love that had kept us connected to our Ohio traditions. “This is the best New Year we’ve ever had,” a great-grandson said to me secretly. Whatever their New Year would look like when they grew up, they’d remember this one. And for me, I had an unforgettable New Year to treasure — a memory where love started with the letter Q.

Passage 14
When his daughter Morgan was growing up, Gordon Hartman was heartbroken after watching her on the playground. Other children refused to play with her, mostly because her disabilities meant she couldn’t access (使用,进入)the places where they were playing. The family tried other places but were never satisfied.
“What we found was there was no place that was an easily-accessible park,” Gordon said. So he went home and sold his construction business, bought a large piece of land, and went to work building an entire amusement park for disabled children.
All kids need playtime, and Morgan was no different. The park — named Morgan’s Wonderland — finally offered Morgan that opportunity. What the Hartmans discovered is that kids without disabilities enjoy the park just as much, and they communicate a lot more with everyone when all are included. In fact, three quarters of the park’s visitors are not disabled. And that makes it all the more fun.
Watching the kids play together without barriers makes you realize that we are all the same, and having fun is for everybody. But it doesn’t end there. One-third of the staff also has special needs. Seeing the way they communicate also puts a smile on your face. They take their jobs seriously, and they make sure everybody is having fun.
“It feels fantastic because we get to see people who are not given the opportunity to experience the types of rides we have, get on a train easily, and go fishing,” says Gordon. The park has been visited by people with special needs from over 67 countries. “When we opened this, we didn’t know if it was going to work,” says Gordon. “All we wanted to do was bring people together and play.”
Just look at the smiles at Morgan’s Wonderland, and you’ll see how much good it does.

Passage 15
When my son finally started school around the age of four, I felt as though I’d been promoted to the new position of School Parent. It was an unexpectedly challenging role, one without additional benefits, or a raise for that matter.
As a direct result of starting school, there were the surprisingly unpleasant changes to our schedule. As parents, we were ill-prepared for the troubled time we had trying to get used to the practice of school.
Gone were the carefree days without plans and plenty of time to kill. This included playing imaginary games indoors or hanging around outside whenever the weather turned nice. Getting to school on time meant becoming the ‘hot mess’ mum often seen in movies. I was rushing kids out the door, forgetting lunch boxes and losing car keys.
As a huge morning person, I tried my best to ensure that school mornings remained calm and slow-paced. I prepared as much as possible the night before. But it still felt like we were in a rush, which I really hated.
The trick, I later discovered, was to cover up my feeling of anxiety. I chanted to myself “Do not rush him, no one likes to be rushed” while helping him get through his morning routine and tasks in a timely manner. Whatever frustration (沮丧) I felt about how slow he was moving, I wouldn’t let him know it. I even didn’t allow anyone in our house to say phrases like, “Hurry up, we’re going to be late!” Our common goal, was not just to get our son out the door in time for school, but more importantly prove that mornings can be relaxed and enjoyable, rather than a horrible start to the day.
Of course by the time summer holiday came, our family had grown wise enough. In what felt like the ‘longest shortest time’, we went from anxious and confused, to calm and confident once again. We were far more prepared to have a smoother start to the new school year.
1.What do we know about the author from the first paragraph?
A.She liked her new position. B.She got a promotion at work.
C.She made good preparations. D.She had to face the challenge.
2.Which word is similar in meaning to the underlined words “hot mess” in paragraph 3?
A.Disorganized. B.Busy. C.Confident. D.Irresponsible.
3.What did the author do when her son was slow in school mornings?
A.She sang a song. B.She pushed him hard.
C.She hid her feelings. D.She complained a lot.
4.What is the text mainly about?
A.Growth of kids. B.Experience as a school parent.
C.New life in school. D.Advice on lifestyle change.
【答案】1.D 2.A 3.C 4.B

Passage 4
It was a September day, and as usual, the halls of Pine High School were filled with excitement. Students of all grades were rushing around. But for one student, today was unlike any other day. Today was the first day of high school for a freshman, Jamie. Jamie had always been a bit of a shy kid, but she had always loved her studies. She made up her mind to make the most of her high school years, but she knew that it wouldn’t be easy.
As she walked down the hallways, Jamie couldn’t help but feel worried. The older students seemed so confident, while she felt small and unimportant. But Jamie was determined to succeed, no matter what challenges came her way.

From that day on, Jamie realized that high school was not a challenge to be faced alone. With the help and support of her classmates, she was able to deal with any difficulty that came her way.

Passage 6
Jaden Anthony, a boy from Brooklyn, New York, was born with a disease called diabetes (糖尿病), a condition that often leaves him feeling thirsty. Deeply aware of the importance of clean water, he became concerned when he learned of the water crisis in Flint, Michigan.
In 2014, the city began using water that contained dangerous levels of lead (铅), which is harmful to all, especially children. Even small amounts could cause diseases and affect learning abilities. Therefore, Jaden wanted to do something to help the kids in Flint.
Being a comic book fan, Jaden decided to create his own to raise awareness about clean water and donate funds. “Kid Brooklyn,” he explained in an interview, “aims to make both kids and adults recognize global dangers.”
In the first book of a series, the main character Kid Brooklyn and his friends are given an unusual Sun Stone that helps them develop super powers. They use those powers to keep the planet clean and safe. Jaden works with illustrators to bring the characters and stories to life. Jaden was twelve years old when his first book was published in October 2017. A dollar from every book Jaden sells is donated to Green for All, an organization to bring clean, fresh water to the families in Flint.
Future issues of the comic will promote different environmental causes. Jaden wants to encourage children all over the world to become scientists and engineers who can fix the problems caused by climate change.

D.Freelancers should get used to a fast-paced lifestyle.
His niece, Liu Hongyan, encouraged by him, also became a guardian in 2019. “When I was a child, my uncle always told me his patrol stories and talked about the history of the Great Wall,” Liu says. “It is my duty and responsibility to protect the Great Wall.”
Mei’s hard work has made a difference. From 2015 to 2023, 289 protection projects were allowed and thousands of guardians joined.

B.He did much better in speed climbing.
C.He thought speed climbing was more attractive.
D.It requires similar techniques used in bouldering and lead climbing.
4.Which of the following can best describe Cao?
