Sing the Language You’re Learning
How can you remember a song from your childhood to this day? Why do your teachers use songs to teach you English? It seems that there is a scientific reason for this.
Researchers are now studying the relationship between music and remembering a foreign language. They find that remembering words in a song is the best way to remember even the most difficult language.
“Singing could be a new way of learning a foreign language. The brain likes to remember things when they are used in a catchy and meaningful way”, said Dr. Karen Ludke. The findings may help those who have difficulties learning foreign languages. On her blog, Dr. Ludke writes, “A listen-and-repeat singing method can help foreign language learning, and opens the door for future research in this area.”
Many language teachers know the importance of using music and singing. Hua Zhuying, a teacher at a Chinese language school in Washington, D.C. depends heavily on songs in teaching Chinese. She says, “I use music all the time to teach children Chinese. For little kids usually we use the music. Not only does it work, but it is fun for kids.”
“Sometimes, I think if I learned English that way, maybe I could speak much better English than now,” Hua Zhuying adds.
Our brain likes music, especially for remembering. So, if you still have trouble in learning a language, why not try singing it out?
1.According to the passage, the best way to remember a foreign language is to ______.
A.read and write more B.listen to the teacher carefully
C.copy the words many times D.remember words in a song
2.The underlined word “catchy” probably means “________”.
A.艰涩难懂的 B.悦耳易记的 C.枯燥乏味的 D.震耳欲聋的
3.Dr. Ludke believes that foreign language learning can be helped by ________.
A.writing songs with the language
B.listening to all kinds of famous music
C.using the listen-and-repeat singing method
D.reading the lyrics again and again
4.From the passage, we know that Hua Zhuying ________.
A.is interested in writing English songs
B.teaches children English by using music
C.teaches Chinese in an American school
D.is a researcher in a language school
【答案】1.D 2.B 3.C 4.C

Here are some tips on listening. We hope it can help you in one way or another.
Relax yourself. Before you start to listen to something, you need to relax. Don’t get nervous or excited. This will help you with your listening.
Listen carefully to the first sentence. The first sentence tells a lot about the whole passage. For example, if at the very beginning, you hear “Last month, our class did a survey on how middle school students spend their weekends, and we found that…” you know you will hear a piece of news, not a children’s story, or a science report.
▲ When you’re listening, try to do some thinking. For example, you can think of the following questions: What happened, when, where and how? What was the result and what does the speaker want to tell us? This way, you may understand the passage better.
Listen for important facts. It’s important for you to remember some important particulars. For example, if the passage is a science report, you should try to remember its findings and how the scientists got their results. This helps in other classes too. In history, listen for names and dates. In math, listen to the teacher’s steps. In stories, listen for what characters do. Good listening helps you learn everything better.
Don’t think about one or two words for too long. You may hear some words that you don’t know, skip (跳过) them. Very often, you’ll find out what they mean later when you go on with the listening. But you can remember some words or sentences that you think are important, and you can use them when you’re answering the questions.

I had learned English for 11 years, but I knew few English idioms (习语) . When I went to study in America last year, I had trouble communicating with Americans at times.
One day, I asked my roommate Kevin, “Shall we play soccer tomorrow?” He answered, “Let’s play it by ear.” I was so puzzled (迷惑的) . “Ear can play soccer?” I asked. He explained, “It means let’s see how things go. The weather report says tomorrow is rainy.”
Last October, I was waiting for the bus in a station. Beside me sat a young man. When he knew I was Chinese, he asked me something about the Great Wall. I told him, “The Great Wall is more than 20, 000 kilometers long.” The man said, “You don’t say.” I was surprised. “There must be something wrong with him,” I thought. Later, I knew he meant “Really?”
I was once invited to my classmate’s home. His mother said to me, “Break the ice, please.” I wondered, “You didn’t give me any ice.” Later my classmate told me she meant I could make myself relaxed in their home.
From then on, I realized English idioms had special meanings. It was wrong to translate them word by word.

If you are looking for good ways to learn English well, you will be disappointed because I don’t really think there are any.
Like a lot of Chinese students, I started learning English as soon as I entered middle school. I was interested in learning this foreign language because I was good at it and this made me feel very happy. However, my interest in English learning didn’t last long. Once I got into high school, English made me confused because I couldn’t stand the boring grammar points. Soon, I lost interest in English and my English became very poor.
But English music gave me the confidence to learn this second language. One day I bought an English magazine. There was a tape in it. It recorded (录制) several English songs and collected some fun articles (文章). The moment I listened to the songs recorded in the tape, I fell in love with English music. Also, I could read some interesting articles in the magazine to get to know the fantastic culture of English-speaking countries.
Soon I decided to pick up my English. In order to learn it well, I did many grammar and reading exercises. At the same time I kept my habit of listening to English music and reading English magazines. My grades in English tests improved little by little.

【导语】本文是一篇记叙文,讲述作者从中学时对英语感兴趣,到高中因语法枯燥失去兴趣,再通过英语音乐和杂志重新拾起兴趣、提升英语成绩的经历,分享了个人学习英语的起伏与方法。
1.第二段提到“Once I got into high school, English made me confused because I couldn’t stand the boring grammar points. Soon, I lost interest in English”,作者失去兴趣是因为语法学习有困难。
2.第二段中“confused”出现在“English made me confused because I couldn’t stand the boring grammar points”,结合语境,语法枯燥让作者无法清晰思考,故“confused”意为“Unable to think clearly”。
3.第三段提到“The moment I listened to the songs recorded in the tape, I fell in love with English music.”,是英语歌曲重新唤起了作者对英语的兴趣。
4.根据第四段内容“At the same time I kept my habit of listening to English music and reading English magazines”可知,作者学习英语的方式包含读英语杂志、听英语音乐,对应②和④。
5.第二段提到“I was interested in learning this foreign language because I was good at it and this made me feel very happy”,学习英语曾经给作者带来了很多快乐,C选项符合原文内容。
①A tree has roots. People have roots too. If you get to the root of a problem, you will solve it. It’s the same thing with words. Dig deeply into a big, unfamiliar word and you will understand where it came from.
②As readers, especially those reading in a second language, we need to deal with the text as if we were detectives (侦探) looking for information to unlock the unknown. Like any good detective arriving on the crime scene, the first thing to do when meeting a new and difficult word is to judge the situation, to look at everything that is known and see if it helps us to understand what it means.
③As you know, prefixes (前缀) and suffixes (后缀) can be added to the beginning or end of words to change the meaning. Know them, and you will have the word building power. But root words are the key. Take time to learn a few of these, put them in your memory, and you will become a master word detective.
④Let’s look at one common root word used in English. “Alter” from the Latin word means “other”. When you meet this root word, you know that the bigger word has something to do with “other”. Examine the word “alternate”. Can you find the Latin root in it?
· If you and your friend like to eat out, first you pay and the other pays the next time. You are alternating paying.
· If you go to the movies on alternate Saturdays, you go on one Saturday, but not the other Saturday.
· If you have no alternative, you have no other choice.
⑤Learn as many root words as possible in the language you are studying. Then use your “rooting for words” skills. Like any new skill, practice and hard work are always paid back.
根据语言材料内容选择最佳答案。
1.What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.The situation. B.The crime scene. C.A new and difficult word.
2.If Jim and Lily go to the movies, which one below is “alternating paying”?
A.They each pay half. B.Jim pays every time. C.They take turns paying.
3.How does the author explain his ideas about root words?
A.By giving a fact. B.By taking an example. C.By telling a story.
4.“Sen” from the Latin word means “old”. Which word uses this Latin root?
A.My brother is my senior by two years.
B.He was ill so he was absent from school.
C.A criminal was sentenced to death by law.
5.Which of the following shows the structure (结构) of the passage?
(①=paragraph 1 ②= paragraph 2, ...)
A. B. C.
【答案】1.C 2.C 3.B 4.A 5.B
【导语】本文是说明文,以树根、侦探探案为类比,介绍了英语词根对理解生词的关键作用,以拉丁词根alter为例具体阐释词根的用法,呼吁读者多学习词根,通过练习提升词汇理解能力。
1.根据文章第2段“the first thing to do when meeting a new and difficult word is to judge the situation, to look at everything that is known and see if it helps us to understand what it means.”,结合语境可知,遇到陌生难词时,人们要借助已知信息理解这个难词的含义,因此it指代的是“a new and difficult word”。
2.根据文章第4段下方的第一条说明“If you and your friend like to eat out, first you pay and the other pays the next time. You are alternating paying.”,可知alternating paying指的是轮流付钱。
3.根据文章第4段“Let’s look at one common root word used in English. “Alter” from the Latin word means ‘other’.”,可知作者通过列举拉丁词根alter的具体例子,来解释关于词根的相关观点,因此使用的是举例子的方法。
4.根据文章第4段“‘Alter’ from the Latin word means ‘other’. When you meet this root word, you know that the bigger word has something to do with ‘other’.”,可知单词的含义和其词根的含义相关。
People often ask me for suggestions about how to learn English. As for it everyone is different. I’ll share some of my experience. I once took a school year English course in Wuhan University, but I mostly learned English on my own.
One thing I can tell you is that, once you’ve started learning, you should try to think in English as much as you can. If you see some things when you’re riding your bike or walking down the street, just think about “How would I say them in English?” At first, it might be with simple words or phrases, but later you should think about longer phrases and sentences. Now I’m in America, and for most of the time, I would think in English and speak it directly. It’s amazing how much this helps.
For several years after I started learning, I was often afraid of talking with others in English because I didn’t want to make mistakes. Finally I got over it. And while traveling in America, I’d try to hang out with friends who couldn’t speak Chinese, so that I’d have no choice but to speak English. And I also decided that if I said something stupid and other people laughed at me, then so be it. After that, my English started improving much more quickly.
Besides, it may be a good idea to ask your American friends to look at the way you’re writing, and give you some suggestions for improvement.
1.The writer learned English in Wuhan University for about ________.
A.a week B.a month C.a term D.a year
2.According to the writer, ________ is a good way to improve your English.
A.thinking in English B.learning English grammar
C.watching English films D.reading English books
3.To the writer’s surprise, his English improved quickly ________.
A.in the university B.in the middle school
C.in China D.in America
【答案】1.D 2.A 3.D
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要讲述了作者学习英语的经历,并分享了一些学习英语的建议和方法。
1.根据文章第一段“I once took a school year English course in Wuhan University”可知,作者在武汉大学学习了一个学年的英语课程,即大约一年时间。
2.根据文章第二段“once you’ve started learning, you should try to think in English as much as you can”可知,作者认为尽可能用英语思考是提高英语的好方法。
3.根据文章第三段“And while traveling in America... After that, my English started improving much more quickly.”可知,作者是在美国旅行期间英语进步很快。
Last term, my younger brother Tom had difficulty with math. “I just don’t understand these equations (方程式),” he said angrily one evening, pushing his textbook away.
“I’ll help,” I offered. As I explained the problems, something surprising happened—the knowledge became clearer to me too! Teaching helped me to organize my thoughts. “See, if you move this number here...” I said, watching Tom’s face light up with understanding.
The next week, our neighbor Lisa asked for help with English grammar. Preparing to teach her, I created colorful charts (图表) to explain grammar. To my joy, all this helped me remember the rules better than just memorizing (背) them.
Then came the real test—the midterm exams. For the first time, I tried studying by “teaching” a fanciful (假想的) class. I stood in my room explaining each topic aloud as if to students. This active practice really worked! My grades improved a lot.
Now I use this method for all subjects. When learning history, I “teach” the timeline to my toys. For science, I draw charts to explain things to the “me” in the mirror.
My teacher calls this the “protege effect” (门徒效应)—we learn best when we prepare to teach. It’s become my secret. As I told Tom recently while helping him with chemistry, “The best way to learn something is to teach it to someone else.”
1.Why was the writer surprised when helping Tom with math?
A.Tom learned the equations faster than expected.
B.The writer’s own knowledge of math became clearer.
C.Tom got angry at the difficult problems.
D.The writer forgot how to solve the equations at first.
2.What does the underlined word “method” mean in the text?
A.A plan to do something. B.An idea of creating something.
C.A way of doing something. D.A pattern of thinking.
3.What is the right order according to the story?
a. The writer used charts to explain grammar.
b. The writer shared his learning secret with Tom.
c. The writer’s grades improved a lot.
d. The writer helped explain math problems to Tom.
e. Tom didn’t understand the equations.
A.d-e-b-a-c B.e-d-a-c-b C.d-b-e-c-a D.e-b-d-a-c
【答案】1.B 2.C 3.B
【导语】本文讲述了作者通过教弟弟Tom数学、邻居Lisa英语以及假想课堂等方式,发现“教别人”能让自己学得更清楚,最终成绩提高并总结出“门徒效应”这一学习秘密的故事。
1.根据第二段“As I explained the problems, something surprising happened — the knowledge became clearer to me too!”可知,作者惊讶的原因是自己的知识变得更清晰了。
2.根据第五段“Now I use this method for all subjects.”结合上文第四段“I stood in my room explaining each topic aloud as if to students. This active practice really worked!”可知,method指代通过“教学”来学习的方式,即“做事的一种方法”。
3.根据第一段“Tom...don’t understand these equations (方程式)”对应e;第二段“‘I’ll help,’...As I explained”对应d;第三段“created colorful charts to explain grammar”对应a;第四段“My grades improved a lot”对应c;第六段“It’s become my secret. As I told Tom recently...”对应b。按故事发展顺序排列:首先是Tom不理解方程式(e),之后作者帮Tom讲解数学题(d),接着作者用图表给Lisa讲解语法(a),随后作者的成绩大幅提升(c),最后作者将学习秘诀分享给Tom(b),对应顺序为e-d-a-c-b。
重难语篇练习
As technology becomes a part of our classrooms, students are using more digital devices (数字设备) to learn. But is this really the best way to learn?
Research shows that paper notebooks are better than digital ones. Many studies have found that students who write notes by hand learn better than those who type. Writing by hand helps with understanding and remembering because it encourages students to rewrite and summarize what they hear. Kids who type are missing out on important learning experiences.
Japanese brain experts have also found that writing in a notebook gets many parts of the brain working, which helps with focus. Writing in a notebook can also make you feel good because it turns blank pages into something special and personal. Digital notes don’t have the same feel.
For a long time, notebooks were very important in education. A way of taking notes called “commonplacing” changed how people learned. Even famous people like William Shakespeare and Isaac Newton used it. They filled their notebooks with great quotes (语录) from the things they read.
But in today’s world, where we can find information so easily on the Internet, some people think that writing by hand is old-fashioned. However, using a pen and paper is still important, especially in school. Students should write more by hand and type less.
1.What’s the meaning of the underlined word “summarize” in Paragraph 2?
A.Conclude. B.Correct. C.Preview. D.Test.
2.According to the article, what is one advantage of taking notes by hand?
A.It saves time.
B.It requires less effort.
C.It promotes (促进) deeper understanding.
D.It is more convenient than using computers.
3.Why does the writer mention William Shakespeare and Isaac Newton in the text?
A.To suggest that they were great learners.
B.To prove that famous people preferred handwriting.
C.To show commonplacing is the best learning method.
D.To stress the widespread use of commonplacing at the time.
4.What’s the right structure of the passage? (①= Paragraph 1…)?
A. B. C. D.
5.What is the main message the writer expresses in the text?
A.Schools should stop digital tools.
B.Technology is revolutionizing (革命性的) education.
C.Handwriting remains important for learning.
D.Commonplacing is a valuable study technique.
【答案】1.A 2.C 3.D 4.B 5.C

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章通过Li Haoqin努力学习却成绩不佳的案例,引出中学生缺乏高效学习方法的问题,随后引用英语老师的建议以及Chen Xiping、Lin Pingyi两位学生的成功经验,探讨了有效的英语学习方法。
1.结合第二段中“They don’t have effective learning methods. This is the main reason for their difficulties”以及后文老师建议的造句方法是“an effective way to learn”,可推断effective意为“有效的”,与Useful意思相近。
2.结合第二段英语老师的观点“The more you use new words, the better you can remember them.”可知,老师认为通过更多地使用单词来记忆是有效的。
3.结合第一段中“Li Haoqin...studies hard...she can’t get good grades”可知①对应e;结合第三段中“Chen Xiping...likes watching TV...see the English words from my textbook”可知②对应a;根据第四段中“Lin Pingyi...likes reading English novels”可知③对应c。因此匹配关系为①—e, ②—a, ③—c。
4.结合第四段中“Lin Pingyi...has a habit of reading. I like reading English novels”可知,Lin Pingyi养成了良好的阅读习惯,A选项表述符合文意。
5.通读全文可知,文章第一段通过Li Haoqin的例子引出中学生努力学习但成绩不好的问题;第二段至第四段分别通过老师的建议以及Chen Xiping、Lin Pingyi两位学生的学习经验,介绍了有效的学习方法来解决这一问题。因此第一段一部分,第二至四段为一部分,即①/②③④。

1.Why did the writer lose interest in learning English?
A.Because he was not very good at speaking.
B.Because he didn’t have a large vocabulary.

A.②④ B.①② C.①③ D.②③
5.Which is TRUE according to the passage?
A.The writer’s English is good all the time.
B.The writer started learning English at primary school.
C.Learning English once brought great happiness to the writer.
D.The writer thought there were many good ways to learn English.

3.To the writer’s surprise, his English improved quickly ________.
A.in the university B.in the middle school

2.What does the underlined word “method” mean in the text?
A.A plan to do something. B.An idea of creating something.

A.To suggest that they were great learners.
B.To prove that famous people preferred handwriting.
