Chinese and English are very different languages. Each language developed along a different path and has a very different system of writing and pronunciation. However,despite（尽管） their huge differences,both languages are spoken by more people in the world than any other language.

Chinese began to develop around 1,000 BC.It has gone through many forms and has many different dialects（方言）.Putonghua is now the most widely used form of Chinese. English began to develop in Britain around the year 100 AD.Local languages,old German,Latin and other European languages mixed and became a new language. This is why,even today,many words in English sound familiar to people who speak other European languages.

Chinese writing uses a system of strokes to make characters,which represent（代表） a sound,a word or an idea. Learning to read Chinese takes great memorization skills and learning to write it takes many hours of repeated practice. Words must be written together with their symbol,meaning and pronunciation. English,on the other hand,uses an alphabet（字母表）.Each letter and some letter combinations have a different sound. Letters are put together to make a word with a particular（特定的） pronunciation.
