Chinese wooden arch bridges with covered walkways are often called “Mu Gong Lang Qiao” in Chinese. They are a wonderful part of China’s cultural heritage (遗产). With a history of over 900 years, these bridges are more than just tools for crossing rivers—they are a symbol of the peace between people and nature. It has been on UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage (联合国教科文组织非物质文化遗产名录) for several years, showing the world pays attention to its special value.
These bridges are mostly in mountain areas of Fujian and Zhejiang. With many rivers and mountains there, local people created the bridges to cross them. What’s amazing about the bridges is their special structure (结构): They use no nails (钉子) at all. Skilled workers join wood pieces firmly with traditional methods like “sunmao” and “mubian”. They make the bridges strong enough to last for hundreds of years even in bad weather.
The covered walkways are more useful than imagined. Besides protecting people from wind and rain, they are great public places for villagers to talk, rest, or hold small festival activities for safety and good luck. For local communities, these bridges are the warm heart of daily life and cultural value.
However, this ancient skill once faced the risk of disappearing. City development changed local lifestyles. Typhoons and other natural disasters damaged some old bridges. Luckily, years of continuous efforts improved the situation. Local governments took some useful action, old workers taught their skills to young people, and students joined in some activities about it.
Today, these bridges grow with new energy, attracting visitors from all over the world. From connecting small villages to sharing world cultures, Chinese wooden arch bridges are a living part of Chinese heritage, telling us traditional skills can keep shining in the modern world.
36.Which picture is the Chinese wooden arch bridge?
A. B. C. D.
37.Why did local people in Fujian and Zhejiang create wooden arch bridges?
A.To attract tourists from other places.
B.To show workers’ skilled handcraft ability.
C.To meet daily needs of crossing rivers and mountains.
D.To get listed as UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage.
38.The underlined word “disappearing” in Paragraph 4 means ________.
A.dying out B.growing up C.cutting down D.turning on
39.The following are the uses of the covered walkways except ________.
A.bringing the local people good luck
B.keeping people away from wind and rain
C.offering a space to hold festival activities
D.providing a place for villagers for daily talks
40.Which is the best title of the passage?
A.The Long History of the Oldest Bridges in China

Dear humans,
It’s the first time that I have written to you, my children. I used to send you many messages. But you always overlooked them. So I wanted to write you a letter.
At the very beginning, let me tell you more about our family. Dear humans, not just you, I have many other children. Some of them swim in water, some fly in the sky, some live in ice-covered places and some run in the grasslands. Some are as small as your fingernails, such as bees; some are as big as cars, such as elephants; some are as high as trees, such as giraffes. They may be very close to you, or even live in your house. But there are others that you may never meet. You bring them home to be your pets, friends and helpers. You put them in zoos. You kill them for their meat and fur. And you even hunt them for fun. They bring you money and happiness, but they also bring illness and death.
I hope you can remember that wild animals are not your food or clothes. They are not killers, either. They are, in fact, not only your brothers but also sisters. We are a family.
Humans, you are clever, hard-working and filled with kindness. You have colorful cultures and advanced technologies (高科技). You can decide where you go, and where I go.
But you don’t respect me. You change my weather, my lands, my rivers. You ask so much of me more than what I can give you. I’m worried that one day you will be lonely.
So, humans, grow up to be more responsible I hope you and all the wildlife can live happily in my arms.
Yours,

前文“Many people do not like to stay at home during holidays.”说明人们不喜欢待在家里,后文“People from the countryside come to the city while people from those large towns go to the countryside”说明人们去不同的地方,因此他们想尝试“不同的”东西。
前文“People from the countryside come to the”与后文“while people from those large towns go to the countryside”形成对比——农村人来到“城市”,城市人去农村。
后文“it is hard to get tickets”说明票很难买到,因此火车和飞机都非常“繁忙”。
根据后文“ We had to run back to our car.”
结合前文“My mother cooked some delicious food by…”
前文“There was too much traffic on the road”说明交通拥堵,因此车辆只能“慢速”移动。
前文“It took us about three hours to go out of the city”说明已经花了时间出城,后文“one more hour to”表示还需要额外时间“到达”目的地。 get on意为“上车”,get off意为“下车”,get up意为“起床”,均不符合“到达目的地”的语境。
前文“We thought it was a good place for a picnic”说明决定在此野餐,后文“took some food out of the car”说明停车拿食物,因此是先“停下来”。
根据“We had to run back to our car.”
前文“We felt tired and hungry”说明感到疲惫和饥饿,后文“we had our picnic in the car”说明在车里野餐,前后为因果关系——因为累和饿,所以在车里吃。

38.The underlined word “disappearing” in Paragraph 4 means ________.

Yours,
Mother Earth

I’m excited today. That’s because my best childhood friend Molly came back home late last night. I haven’t seen her in FOUR years!
I still remember the day Molly came to the world. It was March 20th, 2016—about two years after me. Molly was so 8 that she soon became one of the stars here at Kunming Zoo. There was always a large 9 of visitors outside our playground, but most of these people were coming to see her only.
Molly and I played together every day until one evening in April 2018 when she told me she would go to a remote (遥远的) place. The next morning, I found her cage 10 . The zookeepers told me that Molly was being sent to a zoo in Henan. It was the 11 day of my life—we hadn’t even said goodbye to each other. I have never stopped 12 her since that day. “Will she have difficulty getting used to the northern climate? Will she continue to be treated well?” I thought. Nobody could help answer these questions.
One day, I heard from several zoo visitors that Molly had been trained to perform acrobatics (杂技) and carry tourists around on her back. The handlers (驯兽员) forced her to learn tricks. The news 13 shocked me. How I wished this was not true! Although I also heard that many people had been asking the government to save Molly, I still couldn’t 14 worrying about my friend.
I feel lucky that I have been taken good care of. In many other zoos, however, elephant shows are common while the living conditions are awful. As I grew up, I slowly realized the severity (严重性) of this problem. Every year on August 12th—World Elephant Day—people call for better protection for us. As an elephant, I think this is not 15 .

A. B. C. D.
37.Why did local people in Fujian and Zhejiang create wooden arch bridges?

39.The following are the uses of the covered walkways except ________.
A.bringing the local people good luck
B.keeping people away from wind and rain
C.offering a space to hold festival activities
D.providing a place for villagers for daily talks
