Two months ago, breathing heavily in my first high-level gym class, I was unsure if I’d make it through the hour. In the room, I seemed to be the only one who was 8 from this new class I took. Everyone else looked as if they belonged here. They were in their fitted sportswear without any sweat to be seen. I, on the other hand, with my messy hair and oversized clothes, wondered why I had ever bothered coming.
Earlier last year, I decided to give fitness a real shot. All my life, exercise had been a (n) 9 thing, and in school, gym class was a place of awkwardness. In every gym class, I felt like I was a strange person in the room.
Then, on a Sunday morning, I 10 went to my university gym for spin class (动感单车课程). I had considered giving up many times, but I told myself that attending the class was all that 11 .
The first time I tried to stand on the bike pedals (踏板), my legs were shaking and I felt I didn’t have enough strength to finish this class. But with each class going on, my confidence grew and I became less focused on my 12 . Instead, I could spend more time looking at my thoughts. Finally, the spin class became my special hour every week.
The more I spun, the more I realized how 13 my body was. Never before had I felt such pride in my body’s ability.
After nine months of spinning, I wanted to 14 myself again. And that was how I found myself in the high-level gym class. If spin class got me used to moving my body, then this class taught me that I had to work to build my fitness.
All in all, what truly matters is 15 , not what you wear or your fitness abilities.

Holly got a pet dog. She was so happy, and the dog was happy, too! “I want to call him Eco,” said Holly. “Come here, Eco!” And Eco wagged his tail.
“That dog is your responsibility, Holly,” said her father. “No problem!” Holly agreed.
Before school, Holly took Eco for his first morning walk. She felt very tired. It was really cold and dark—and it was so early! But Eco didn’t mind. He ran, stopped, ran again, saw a black cat, tried to run after it and nearly pulled Holly off her feet!
Holly realised it was late when she got back from the walk. She quickly ate a piece of bread, took her bag and jacket, and ran to school.
What a busy morning! But that was not all of looking after a pet dog.
When Holly took Eco for his evening walk, it was quite dark outside. Holly felt nervous. She ran along the road with him, but it was difficult because Eco often stopped to study the bushes and trees. And he often tried to catch birds, or played with sticks and fallen leaves.
A few days went by. Then…
It was raining outside. Eco entered and the trouble started. Eco’s dirty paws (爪) left prints everywhere, on the floor, on the blanket, on the sofa… “Come here, Eco!” said Holly. She wanted to stop him, but it didn’t work.
Holly got really angry. She decided to punish Eco. So that night Eco was kept in the greenhouse alone.
When Holly entered the greenhouse next morning, it was a disaster. Her mum’s plants and flowers were lying on the floor. And the pots (花盆) were broken into a hundred pieces. And Eco was sitting in the soil and leaves.
“Oh, no,” said Holly. She realised it was time to train the dog. “He needs to know the rules.” Every day after school, Holly repeats simple orders to Eco. If he can do as ordered, he can get nice bones. The amazing thing is, Eco really enjoys it. For him, it’s one big game.
So Eco has learnt to sit when Holly says, “Sit!” He learns to come when Holly says, “Come here!” And he doesn’t make trouble anymore!
32.What can we learn from Holly’s words in Paragraph 2?
A.She was glad to take care of the dog.

When people talk to each other, write letters or make phone calls, words of the spoken form or the written form can send any message they want to pass on.
But besides words, do you know any other ways you can use to communicate with people? Rich expressions on your face can be one of them. A smile on your face shows that you are happy. Tears in your eyes tell others that you are sad or excited. Body language can do the same job. When you put your hand up in class, the teacher knows that you want to say something or you may have some questions to ask. You shake your head from side to side and people know you are saying “no” or refuse others’ requirements. When you nod, people will understand that you are saying “yes” or agree to others’ opinions or suggestions.
Other forms can also carry different messages. For example, a sign at the bus stop gives passengers instructions on which bus to take. The flag language made by soldiers can pass different orders. Sound from the school bell tells the students and the teachers when to begin or end a class. A photographer can use the photos he has taken to tell others about what he thinks of the world around him. Music and films also convey the feelings and ideas of the musicians and the directors. So next time when you see a piece of art or listen to some music, take it as communication with its creator and try to get the meaning behind it.

36.When people want to use words of the written form to communicate with others, they ________.
A.keep silent B.cry aloud C.write letters D.sing songs
37.According to the passage, you just need to ________ if you agree to others’ suggestions.
A.close your eyes B.put up your hand
C.move your head up and down D.shake your head from side to side
38.Through a photo, we may know ________.
A.which bus can be taken B.what the orders mean for soldiers
C.when the students should have a class D.how the photographer sees the world
39.The underlined word “convey” probably means ________ in the passage.
A.掩饰 B.爆发 C.传递 D.克制
40.The best title for this passage may be “________” .
A.Forms of communication B.Spoken and written languages
C.Facial expressions and gestures D.Suggestions on communication

Last month, I made a birthday card for my mother to give her a special gift.
First, I prepared coloured paper, scissors, glue and stickers. Then I folded pink paper in half. Next, I cut out hearts and flowers and stuck them on the card. I wrote warm words inside and decorated it with shiny stickers.
When I gave her the card, she was happy and moved. She said it was her favourite gift. From this experience, I learned that DIY is fun and meaningful. It helps us show love to others.
