阅读理解 The New Zealand Infrastructure(基础设施) Commission estimated we’d need another 57,000 people in the infrastructure workforce over the next 30 years to help solve our multi-billion-dollar infrastructure crisis. It’s no surprise. Who has not been waylaid by roadworks in New Zealand? But what is a career laying pipes and repairing roofs actually like for a young woman in New Zealand? Harmony Pearce is a 25-year-old plumber(水管工) in Dunedin. And she’s good at it. Harmony is one of 10 finalists—and the only woman finalist—competing at Plumbing World’s Young Plumber of the Year competition in Hamilton. To get here, Harmony survived both a local and a regional knockout competition, which involved a series of practical challenges that sound particularly impressive to someone like me whose primary skill is making little marks on paper. Despite regular articles about New Zealand’s need for more tradespeople, it wasn’t easy for Harmony to get a foothold in the industry. She started looking for an apprenticeship(学徒工作) at 19, but only secured one at 21. In an earlier interview, Stacey Mendonca, co-founder of the National Association of Women in Construction, said, “I had an old friend phone me recently who said they didn’t want to take on female apprentices previously. But he had called me to say he wished he’d done it sooner, as they are the best workers they have ever had.” That there was any hesitancy in the first place shows there are still people out there with a_complex about women handling a power drill. The good news is that things got easier once Harmony secured her apprenticeship.“I didn’t feel like I was discriminated against because I was a female. I did everything the boys did. I got treated the same as the boys did,” she says of the three companies she worked for. It feels like the doors are slowly opening wider, and the trade is quietly making room in ways that weren’t as visible before. 1. What do the statistics in Paragraph 1 show about New Zealand? A. Infrastructure is developing fast. B. Tradespeople are in high demand. C. Roads are in urgent need of repairing. D. Women are joining the building industry. 2. What can be learnt about Harmony from Paragraph 2? A. She is recognized for her skills. B. She focuses on basic-level repairs. C. She felt challenged during the competitions. D. She recorded her clients’ information on paper. 3. What does the underlined part “a complex” in Paragraph 4 probably mean? A. A hot debate. B. An unwritten rule. C. A sense of prejudice. D. A piece of advice. 4. What is the author’s attitude toward more female plumbers? A. Carefree. B. Optimistic. C. Doubtful. D. Negative. Over millions of years, humans have responded to certain situations without thinking too hard. If our ancestors spotted movement in the nearby forest, they would run first and question later. The ability to analyze and plan is part of what separates us from other animals. The question of when to trust your instinct(直觉) matters in the office as much as in the forest. Slow thinking is the feature of a well-managed workplace. Yet instinct also has its place. Some decisions are more connected to emotional responses and less to analysis. In demanding customer-service or public-facing situations, instinct is often a better guide to how to behave. Instinct can also be improved. Plenty of research has shown that instinct becomes more accurate with experience. In one well-known experiment, volunteers judged whether designer handbags were real or fake. Some were told to rely on instinct, others to deliberate. Instinct worked better for those who owned at least three designer handbags. The more expert you become, the better your instinct tends to be. However, the real reason to embrace fast thinking is that it is, well, fast. It is often the only way to get through the day. When your inbox floods with new emails at the start of the day, there is no way to read them all carefully. Instinct helps you decide which to answer and which to delete. Fast thinking can also help the entire organization. The value of many managerial decisions lies in the simple fact that they have been made. Yet as data explodes, the temptation to ask for one more bit of analysis is harder to resist. Managers often overthink, turning a simple problem into a complex one. When to use instinct in the workplace rests on its own form of pattern recognition. Does the decision maker have real expertise? Is this a field in which emotion matters more than reasoning? Above all, is it worth delaying the decision? Slow thinking is needed to get the big calls right. But fast thinking is the way to stop deliberation turning into a waste of time. 5. Why does the author mention our ancestors in the forest? A. They managed to live there for long. B. They survived in such a dangerous place. C. They differed from animals in thinking. D. They left us a valuable skill. 6. What can be inferred about instinct in Paragraph 3? A. Even experts rely on instinct. B. Experience contributes to instinct. C. Instinct works better than analysis. D. Instinct matters in decision-making. 7. How does instinct help people in the workplace according to Paragraph 4? A. To answer massive emails. B. To analyze exploding data. C. To make quick decisions. D. To solve complex problems. 8. How does the author convey his/her ideas in the text? A. By contrasting. B. By giving definitions. C. By listing data. D. By using cause-effect. Ⅱ. To figure out how to choose a career, start by taking a good look at yourself. Your talents, your passions and your mission are like the small wires. __1__ From there, you’ll narrow the field further by looking at the specifics of different career options you’re most suited for. List your skills and talents. No matter who you are, there are plenty of things you’re good at. You might know what those talents are already, but go ahead and make a list of every one that comes to mind. __2__ Don’t leave out any of them, even if you don’t think it qualifies as a career skill. Identify your passions and mission. If you’re going to find a meaningful career, passion isn’t just a pipe dream but a must. It means the work will fulfill you. __3__ To sustain commitment over the long stretch, you also need a deeper purpose. This purpose defines your mission: the contribution you want to make and the results you try to see. __4__ Matters like how much money you want to make and where you want to live are important too. Think about these questions to narrow down your options: How much money do you need to make? Do you want flexibility in your job? What kind of benefits are important to you? What kind of environment do you excel in? If you’ve managed to get through everything above and have a clear answer for what you’re wired to do, congratulations! If you’re still unsure, that’s okay. __5__ There’s only so much career shopping you can do before you have to just go for it. A. Consider your financial goals first. B. Think about practical parts of a job. C. However, passion alone isn’t enough. D. You don’t have to have this figured out by dinnertime. E. These are all clues that tell you what your strengths are. F. They combine to form a picture of what you’re wired to do. G. Your mission will follow if you’re passionate about your work. Plenty of research has shown that instinct becomes more accurate with experience.(直觉也可以得到提升。 根据第四段“Instinct helps you decide which to answer and which to delete. Fast thinking can also help the entire organization.(直觉能帮助你决定哪些信息需要回复,哪些则需要删除。 第二段提到“Slow thinking is the feature of a well-managed workplace. Yet instinct also has its place. Some decisions are more connected to emotional responses and less to analysis. In demanding customer-service or public-facing situations, instinct is often a better guide to how to behave.(缓慢的思考是管理有序的工作场所所具有的特点。 1. 答案 F 解析 空前“Your talents, your passions and your mission are like the small wires.(你的才能、你的激情和你的使命就像细小的电线)”指出才能、激情和使命就像细小的电线。 F项“它们结合在一起,形成了一幅你天生适合做的事情的画面”符合语境,They指代上文提到的“Your talents, your passions and your mission”。 2. 答案 E 解析 上文“No matter who you are, there are plenty of things you’re good at. You might know what those talents are already, but go ahead and make a list of every one that comes to mind.(无论你是谁,你都有很多擅长的事情。 3. 答案 C 解析 上文“If you’re going to find a meaningful career, passion isn’t just a pipe dream but a must. It means the work will fulfill you.(如果你想找到一份有意义的职业,激情不是白日梦,而是必须的。这意味着工作将使你充实)”指出激情的重要性;下文“To sustain commitment over the long stretch, you also need a deeper purpose.(为了长期维持投入,你还需要一个更深层次的目标)”指出还需要一个更深层次的目标。 根据下文“Matters like how much money you want to make and where you want to live are important too. Think about these questions to narrow down your options: How much money do you need to make? Do you want flexibility in your job? What kind of benefits are important to you? What kind of environment do you excel in?(像你想赚多少钱、你想住在哪里这样的事情也很重要。 5. 答案 D 解析 上文“If you’ve managed to get through everything above and have a clear answer for what you’re wired to do, congratulations! If you’re still unsure, that’s okay.(如果你已经完成了上面的所有事情,并且对你想要做的事情有了一个明确的答案,那么恭喜你! Whether ... or ... demand for ...
