Then the disabled girl shyly put a few items on the belt. Her father told her to sort her items out, food stuff first. I rang that up. She tried to insert payment but it was a slide-your-card deal. I helped guide her hand down the correct part. I handed her the receipt.

She handed me her money and I told her that it was a $50 bill and she would be getting change back. Her father asked me to give her small bills. I popped the register and took out her change and the receipt. I asked the girl to give me her hand and she did. I counted out her change to her, one bill at a time. “Here is a 20, a 5 and your 2 singles.” I thanked her for shopping and told her to enjoy her toys. She then helped her father put stuff on the belt and I continued talking to her about her shirt.

C. Try your best to turn criticism into praise.

G. It weakens the sincere praise you give in other situations.

Carmen; “build on the point”为precise praise的效果,呼应前文中的“the quality of their future work”,即“精准的夸奖会让接受者在未来工作中做得更好”。
其中的It指代前句中的“using empty praise to wrap a critique”。
1. 答案 C
解析 根据下文的“Flying to see my mom, I was seated next to a __2__ man with a warm smile”可知,在去探望母亲的航班上,作者坐在一位笑容温暖的先生旁边,也就是作者在飞机上与这位先生相遇(encounter)了。 故选C项。appointment“约会”;conflict“冲突”;negotiation“谈判”。
2. 答案 A
故选A项。serious“严肃的”;lonely“孤独的”;generous“慷慨的”。
3. 答案 A

return“恢复,重现”;last“持续”;grow“增强”。
satisfaction“满意”;guilt“内疚”;delight“高兴”。
motivate“激励”;bother“费心”;shock“使震惊”。
7. 答案 A
故选A项。donate“捐赠”;intervene“干涉”。

randomly“随机地”;temporarily“暂时地”;instantly“立即”。
escape“逃避”;spread“传播”;hide“隐藏”。
news“新闻”;notice“通知”;update“最新消息”。
11. 答案 D
解析 根据上文的“the first time without Dad”和“I lost my dad a few years ago”可知,此处指失去(losing)所爱之人的悲伤可以得到缓和。故选D项。attend“照顾”;comfort“安慰”;accuse“指责”。
relax“放松”;test“测验”;search“搜寻”。
13. 答案 D
解析 根据下文的“the people around me ... might not even __14__. But some will”可知,作者开始尝试与周围的人打招呼(acknowledge)、交谈。故选D项。question“质疑”;inform“通知”;entertain“(使)感到快乐”。
14. 答案 A
解析 根据上文的“Not every seatmate may want to talk, and most people might not even”以及常识可知,飞机上不是每一个人都愿意交流,大多数人甚至不会抬头看(look up)。故选A项。show off“炫耀”;turn up“露面”;back off“后退”。
afraid“害怕的”;hesitant“犹豫的”;nervous“紧张的”。
