Lena, a 62-year-old woman living in a quiet Canadian town, found an old guitar in the attic (阁楼) last week. She was sorting old photos and childhood toys when her hand touched the cool wood, and the familiar shape brought a big smile. The guitar’s wooden body was grey, and its strings (弦) were broken, but it brought back a flood of warm old stories.
When Lena was 7, her father often taught her to play the guitar by their lakeside house. One summer evening, he asked her to play Happy Birthday for her little brother Max. Max laughed and cheered even when she messed up notes. “Music makes every moment special,” Dad would say, smiling as Lena struggled with the music notes. Neighbors passed by to listen and sang along, while her dog Buddy moved his tail happily and touched her hand softly. That year, her father gave her the guitar as a New Year gift, telling her to record moments with the family by using music.
Now, so many years later, Lena softly cleaned the guitar. She replaced the strings and tried to play the old song — her fingers hurt a little, but the song felt like a hug from the past. Though her fingers were not as quick as before and her voice was a bit shaky, the same happiness filled her heart. Looking in the mirror, she saw grey hair, but her eyes shone just like they did by the lake.
“Some things never change,” Lena said softly, touching the guitar’s old neck. She missed her father, but the guitar made her feel close. The guitar looks old, but in her mind, she was still that 7-year-old girl, laughing under the sunset with her family. Age may make us look older, but the music in our hearts remains as young as ever.
24. What made Lena think of the old stories?
A. Her dog Buddy. B. The old photos. C. The lakeside house. D. The discovered guitar.
25. Why did Lena’s father teach her to play the guitar?
A. To value family time. B. To gift her on New Year.
C. To celebrate Max’s birthday. D. To spread music to neighbors.
26. How did Lena feel when playing the old song years later?
A. Sad. B. Proud. C. Regretful. D. Joyful.
27. What does the text want to tell us?
A. Old things need care. B. Practice makes perfect.
C. Music comes from daily life. D. Music keeps us young at heart.

Climate breakdown is always changing the taste and quality of beer, scientists have warned. The quantity and quality of hops (啤酒花), a key ingredient (成分) in most beers, is being affected by global heating, according to a study. As a result, beer may become more expensive and manufacturers will have to adapt their brewing (酿造) methods.
Researchers forecast that hop production in European growing regions will fall by 4-18% by 2050 if farmers do not adapt to hotter and drier weather, while the content of alpha acids in the hops, which gives beers their unique taste and smell, will fall by 20-31%.
“Beer drinkers will surely see the climate change, either in the price tag or the quality,” said Miroslav Tmka, a scientist at the Global Change Research Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences and coauthor of the study, published in the journal Nature Communications. “That is bound to happen from our data.”
Beer, the third-most popular drink in the world after water and tea, usually gets its flavour from aromatic (芳香的) hops that are sensitive to changes in light, heat and water. In recent years, demand for high-quality hops has been pushed up by a boom in craft beers with stronger flavours. But green-house gases are putting the plant at risk, the study found.
In Germany, the second-biggest hop producer in the world, average hop production have fallen, the study found. Andreas Auernhammer, a hop farmer in Spalt in southern Germany, said the total rainfall in his fields had changed little but that now “the rain does not come at the right time.”
28. According to the researchers’ forecast, by 2050, if farmers don’t adapt, hop production in European growing regions will decrease by ________.
A. 4-18% B. 4-10% C. 10-20% D. 20-31%
29. What specific aspect of beer will be directly influenced by the fall in the content of alpha acids in hops?
A. The beer’s color. B. The beer’s alcohol content.
C. The beer’s price. D. The beer’s unique taste and smell.
30. What does the boom in craft beer demand imply for the beer industry under climate change according to Paragraph 4?
A. It may depend less on high-quality hops.
B. It may make shortage of beer hops worse.
C. It may speed up the development of other ingredients.
D. Consumers may make little response to the rising beer price.
31. Which statement is the best title for this article?
A. Rainfall Problems for German Hop Farmers
B. Climate Change Harms Beer Quality and Price
C. Challenges of Rising Craft Beer Demand
D. Scientific Research on Global Warming and Hop Growing

An IT company from Finland has developed a new font (字体) which uses machine learning to rewrite bad language into kinder words.
More than a third of bullying (欺凌) takes place online, and the numbers are on the rise, according to a report by the United Nations’ educational organization UNESCO. TietoEVRY developed the Polite Type font as a new tool to deal with online bullying among kids, pointing out harmful language and causing users to pick kinder words.
As users try to write hurtful English words, the font will directly replace them.
Writing “I hate you” would, for example, result in the milder “I disagree with you” when Polite Type is used on the computer. Sentences such as “you are ugly” is changed into “you are not traditionally beautiful” while hurtful words are covered completely. The company says it is the first example where a cover has been used as a symbol in a font package. Racial slurs (种族歧视语) are replaced with the racial group they refer to, rather than covering the word entirely.
The vocabulary of the font was co-created with teenagers from Finland. The font’s library of words was chosen to include language from different origins, religions, and world views, and will make changes as more people and businesses use it. In the future, TietoEVRY suggests that machine learning could be used to teach the font to understand how language is used. Polite Type can be now downloaded and used for free.
“We want bullies to rethink the words they use and the actual meaning behind them,” said Kia Haring, global head of communication at TietoEVRY. “I hope that our cause acts as a wake-up call for all audiences to consider how bullying could be solved.”
32. What does the underlined word “milder” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Shorter. B. Less rude. C. Clearer. D. More interesting.
33. What can we expect of the Polite Type font in the future?
A. It will be updated.
B. More racial groups will use it.
C. It will have more words covered.
D. Users will be charged with using it.
34. What does Kia Haring think of creating the Polite Type font?
A. Imperfect. B. Unsuccessful. C. Attracting. D. Inspiring.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. A Font Avoids Racial Slurs
B. Polite Type: The Self-Developing Font
C. A Font Designed to Fight Online Bullying
D. Show Others Kindness by Using A New Font

Between school, homework, sports, your after-school job, and hanging out with friends, it may feel like there’s no time for healthy eating. And when you have time, you may simply eat snacks like potato chips. 36 In fact, if you have a busy schedule, it’s even more important to eat healthy foods that give you the energy you need to keep going.
37 For example, you may feel hungry in a long afternoon of classes or during your swim meet. Knowing how much food your body needs to satisfy this hunger is important. A few walnuts (核桃) are great brain food before sitting down to do your math homework. 38 .
Healthy snacking is important to you. During teenage years, the body needs more nutrients (营养) to grow. Snacks are a great way to satisfy your hunger and get all nutrients your body needs. 39 Do not eat foods with lots of added sugars like candy bars or soda. That’s because eating these foods may help you stop feeling hungry for a moment, but they are bad for your health in the long term.
Choosing healthy snacks means shopping smart. 40 . We may find “all natural” on the side of a package but it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s nutritious. For example, “all natural” juice drinks can be filled with sugar, which means they’ll make you fat easily and give you little nutrition.
A. It’s natural to feel hungry at certain times

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Ever since I entered senior high school, I had been buried in endless homework and school projects, and I hardly had time to stay with my family. My mom, a gentle and patient woman, always tried to get close to me, but I often pushed her away coldly, buried in my own busy schedule.
She loved baking sweet cookies in her free time, a family hobby she had kept since I was a little kid. She would set a plate of warm cookies on my desk every evening, hoping to share a few quiet minutes with me, but I would only nod without looking up from my books, or even tell her to leave me alone in a sharp voice. I could see the sadness in her eyes, but I was too caught up in my stress to care.
Last Saturday afternoon, I stayed in my room reviewing for a big exam, feeling stressed and upset. The whole house was quiet, except for the soft sound of baking from the kitchen. I planned to ignore it as usual, but I suddenly found my math notebook missing. I rushed to the kitchen to look for it, and what I saw stopped me.
Mom was standing by the oven, her hands covered in flour (面粉), and there was an unfinished cookie jar (罐子) on the table. The jar was painted with little stars and my name, half-done. Beside it lay a small note, written in her warm handwriting, “For my dearest kid, no matter how busy you are, I’m always here.” She looked up at me, a little surprised and shy, without saying a word. My throat tightened immediately, and a wave of guilt (愧疚) washed over me. I realized that I only thought about myself all the time. I didn’t notice how much my mom loved and cared for me. I stood there, not knowing what to say, my eyes filled with tears.

A Plan for My Future
Hello everyone! My plan is to open a local bookstore. Let me share more details.
In this digital age, physical books still have a special charm — the smell, the feel of turning pages, and the joy of getting lost in a story. So I want to share that joy with others. I also want to create a warm place where people can slow down and really enjoy reading. Besides, my bookstore will be a place for book lovers to meet, share ideas, and grow together.
I truly hope my bookstore can keep the love of reading alive while bringing people closer.
Thanks for listening! (98 words)
读后续写参考范文:
I breathed deeply and walked to mom, filled with regrets. I stepped closer and gently hugged her, my eyes wet with tears. I said sorry in a soft voice, admitting how selfish and cold I had been. My mom froze for a second and then held me back gently, her hands still slightly covered in flour. I looked at the unfinished jar with my name on it and realized how much she had loved me in silence. The warm scent of cookies filled the air, and at that moment, all the distance between us disappeared.
From then on, I made a big change in my attitude towards my mom and family time. I no longer buried myself in study without communication. Instead, I spent more time talking with her, sharing my joys and worries. I often helped her with housework and even learned to bake cookies together. This experience taught me that family love is the most valuable treasure. I finally understood that true warmth comes not from achievements, but from the moments we share with those who love us most.

Text 5 谈论数学老师
M: I have Mrs. Brown for math this term. You had her last term, right? Is she really strict?
W: No, she’s very friendly. She always made time for us when we had questions, (5) though she isn’t very funny.
Text 6 阅读习惯
W: I didn’t read for fun until after university. I wasn’t a patient kid.
M: Really? You read so much now. (6)
W: It started when I began working full-time. I noticed many successful people read in their free time. (6) I also wanted a break from my phone.
M: Do you read at night?
W: Not really. I watch TV after work. Weekends are also full. I can’t relax in cafés with a book like some do. I only have time to read on trains and buses. (7)
Text 7 购买家具
M: We should have measured the doorway before coming here.
W: Yes. But let’s first find tables that match the wall color and that are not too expensive. Then, most importantly, we need to make sure we have enough space.
M: Exactly. Let’s pick our favorites and go home to measure the doorway today. Then, we can arrange for a truck tomorrow.
W: Should we pay the staff here to help move them?
M: It’s not necessary. Although our parents are too old to help, some friends can give us a hand. (10)
Text 8 跟邻居借工具

W: Go ahead, take whatever you need!
M: Thanks! I’ll return them by the end of the day.
W: No rush. By the way, we’re having a community party this Sunday.
M: I’ll be there. And I’ll bring back your tools, too.
W: Great. We’ll see you then!
Text 9 写作建议
M: Ms. Carson, (15) (16) I’ve tried this task a few times, but I can’t come up with anything useful. We only have a week left, and I really don’t want to hand⌒it⌒in late. (13)
W: You have time! I’m happy to help you with it. What stories interest you?
M: I prefer books and movies about people facing challenges, (14) not adventure stories or character-focused ones.
W: So, write a story that you would enjoy reading. Begin with an exciting situation — from a novel, film, or even history. But I usually get ideas from my own life. (15)
M: I didn’t realize real life could be a story too.
W: Of course. Writing is a way to explore your imagination and express your feelings. But for me, the most valuable part is understanding others better by putting myself in their shoes. That’s the magic of writing. (16)
Text 10 惠蒂尔:一栋楼的小镇
I live in Whittier, a small town in Alaska. (17) (18) In summer, the place comes alive with tourist ships. The beautiful mountains around it make Whittier very popular with visitors. (17) But in winter, strong winds and heavy snow make traveling difficult and even dangerous.
Because of the extreme weather, almost everyone in the town lives in the same building — Begich Towers. (18) (20) You can find a store, a doctor’s office, an indoor garden, a swimming pool, a hotel, the town offices, and a police station inside. Only the local school is in a different building, connected by underground pathways. (19)
There’s not much to do in winter, but I’m not bored at all. I like to read and borrow movies from the building’s video store. Best of all, I can always find someone to talk to and join group activities. We’re like a big family! (20) Living here has taught me that home isn’t just a place but the people around you.
