One evening, I went to the supermarket to buy some groceries (日用品). As I entered through the glass doors, I immediately sensed that something unusual was happening near the cash register (收银台). My curiosity led me to take a closer look.
There, I saw a cashier taking some items out of a customer’s shopping bag. The customer was an elderly woman who looked very sad and worried.

The soldiers stepped in perfect lines during the military parade on Sept 3. Did you enjoy watching them? Maybe everyone would say “yes” as uniformity (整齐划一) makes us feel so good.
The reason is that our brains love orderly things, according to China Science Communication. This has to do with something called “processing fluency”. It helps our brain do things easily, such as remembering and deciding. Usually, symmetry (对称), clear shapes and sharp contrast can help improve processing fluency.
But why does our brain like this fluency? Scientists have different ideas. Some say it’s because our brain doesn’t have to work hard to understand. This helps us make quick choices without thinking too hard.
Another idea is that our brains learned this from evolution (进化). When things are easy to get, our brain thinks we’re safe. But if things get tricky, it might mean danger, said Psychology Today. The neocortex (新皮质), a part of our brain, plays a big part in this. It has 300 million brain cells that look for patterns to help us learn.
Processing fluency can be helpful for marketing. For example, Apple often uses this idea to make its ads simple and clear. This way, people can understand and remember their products very easily.
You can also use processing fluency to make daily life more efficient, especially for students. First, keep your study space tidy. Put books, pens and notebooks in fixed places so you don’t waste time looking for them. Clear order helps your brain focus better. Second, organize information simply. When taking notes, use short lists instead of long paragraphs, and group similar things together—like English words of the same theme or math problems of the same type. This makes it easier for your brain to remember and understand. Third, set fixed daily routines. For example, review lessons after dinner or pack your schoolbag the night before. Fixed habits let you act without thinking too much, saving energy for more important things. All these small steps use order and simplicity to make your brain work smoother, making life and study easier.
23. How does the writer start the passage?
A. By sharing a good feeling. B. By giving an example.
C. By comparing different feelings. D. By explaining a scientific idea.
24. According to Paragraph 4, why does uniformity make people feel good?
A. Because it is helpful for the evolution of the brain. B. Because it helps the neocortex work better.
C. Because it tells the brain that everything is okay. D. Because it excites most of our brain cells.
25. We can infer from the passage that ______.
A. The neocortex helps the brain find patterns for learning
B. People should never change their daily routines
C. Processing fluency only works for students and marketers
D. Our brains prefer complex things because of evolution
26. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. Uniformity in Military Parades
B. Study Tips for Middle School Students
C. Processing Fluency: Why Brains prefer Order And Its Applications
D. How the Neocortex Works in Brain Evolution
D
As growing crops that can get used to climate change is becoming more and more important, Chinese scientists have found, in an important study, a new way that can greatly improve crop production when it’s really hot. It’s predicted that if the global temperature goes up by 2 degrees Celsius (摄氏度), the average losses of crops will increase a lot, by 3 to 13 percent. This shows that we really need more kinds of crops that can stand the heat to deal with future problems about having enough food.
Scientists from the Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology under the Chinese Academy of Sciences used a new gene-editing tool. They put a heat-shock part into a tomato gene called LIN5. This change makes the gene work better when it’s hot and stops fruits from lacking too much sugar at high temperatures.
Tests done in different seasons and places, like greenhouses and open fields, showed that this method made tomato yields (产量) go up by 14 to 47 percent in normal weather and 26 to 33 percent when it was hot. It also stopped 56 to 100 percent of the losses in yield caused by heat, according to a study that came out recently in the magazine Cell. What’s more, the team’s test on rice showed that this genetic engineering way can increase rice production by 7 to 13 percent in normal conditions and by 25 percent when it’s hot. It can also cut down 41 percent of the losses in yield because of high temperatures.
These tests have really helped crops get better at dealing with climate change and started a new time of designing crops that can give a lot of yield and stay stable even with the changing climate, the researchers said.
27. What will happen if the global temperature rises by 2 degrees Celsius?
A. Crop yields will increase by 3 to 13 percent.
B. Crop losses will rise by 3 to 13 percent on average.
C. All crops will lose 56 to 100 percent of their yields.
D. Rice production will drop by 25 percent.
28. What did the scientists add to the tomato gene to improve its heat resistance?
A. A cold-resistant part B. A sugar-producing part C. A heat-shock part D. A yield-increasing part
29. How much can the new genetic engineering method reduce rice’s yield losses due to high temperatures?
A. 25 percent B. 41 percent C. 56 percent D. 100 percent
30. What can we infer from the passage about the new genetic engineering method?
A. It works only for tomatoes and rice.
B. It has solved the global food shortage problem.
C. It will replace all traditional farming methods in the future.
D. It may help address food security issues caused by climate change.

Many students think that homework is a burden. However, a recent study shows that homework, if properly designed, can actually help students learn better.
The study found that students who spend a reasonable amount of time on homework usually get better grades. Homework helps students review what they have learned in class. It also helps teachers check if students understand the lessons.
But too much homework can be harmful. It can make students feel stressed and tired. It may also leave them less time for other important activities like sports and hobbies. Some students even stay up late to finish homework, which is bad for their health.
So what is the right amount of homework? Experts suggest about 10 minutes per grade level. For example, a third grader should have about 30 minutes of homework, while a ninth grader about 90 minutes.
Quality is more important than quantity. Good homework should be interesting and help students develop their thinking skills. It should not just be repetitive exercises. Projects that require creativity and research are often more helpful. Parents can help by providing a quiet place for study and setting a regular homework time. But they should not do the homework for their children. The purpose of homework is to help children learn to work independently.
51. According to the study, what are the two benefits of homework?

五、阅读表达

New Rules for a Better Us
Our school has made some changes to the campus rules recently to make our school life better, and one of them is the most impressive for me. It is about mobile phones.
We were allowed to bring mobile phones before, but we had to keep them silent. Now the rule is much stricter than before. We must hand in our phones before morning classes. We will be punished if we break the rule. Because of this, no one uses phones in class anymore, and we focus better on our studies.
