A Connecting ideas
Many business managers are not only well-organized, but also creative.
Are you both creative and hard-working? If so, you could be either a painter or a fashion designer. Before you choose a job, it is best to think about your personality as well as your goals.
Lots of people are too shy to tell anyone about their dreams except their closest friends. Sometimes, neither their parents nor teachers know about their goals.
Read the texts below and pay attention to the words and phrases in bold.
Expressions Meaning
both ... and ... both are true
not only ... but (also) ... two related things are true
either ... or ... one or the other
neither ... nor ... not one and not the other

as well as and
When we use these expressions to connect two subjects, the verb form after both … and … is always plural, but the verb form after not only … but (also) …, either … or … and neither … nor … can be plural or singular.
Both Kitty and Simon are energetic.
Not only the students but (also) their teacher has done the personality survey.
Either Simon or David is ready to do new tasks.
Neither Millie nor her friends know much about personality types.

B Object clauses introduced by that
Read the text below and pay attention to the use of that.
(1) Millie feels lucky that she has good teachers in her school. (2) She hopes that she can be a teacher when she grows up. (3) Millie thinks that great teachers should be hard-working, kind and patient. (4) She is glad that she has these qualities herself and (5) believes that they will help her become a good teacher. (6) She is sure that she needs to work hard to prepare for her future.
An object clause can be put after verbs such as hope, think, believe, know and mean (⇒see clauses 2, 3 & 5).
An object clause can also follow adjectives such as lucky, glad, sure and certain (⇒see clauses 1, 4 & 6).
In informal English, we often drop that.
Daniel: Do you think (that) you're creative?
Millie: I hope (that) I am!
An object clause functions as the object of a sentence. We use that to introduce an object clause that is a _______ (statement, question).
